World University & School's Plea for $$$ - monies - if Everything is Free, Online Education as Free, Effective and Worthwhile
A friend writes:
I don't understand plea for $$$ if everything at WUaS is free as you keep saying. As you also know I don't understand how any significant educational experience can be free.........or how on-line teaching can be effective and worthwhile. BUT remember you are conversing with an internet neanderthal who needs personal and eye contact in her relationships. :-)
Have a good weekend, P
Scott:
Dear P,
Thanks for your email. I think MIT Open Course Ware, Wikipedia, and Khan Academy (to name only a few), and especially the free tuition to financially-in-need, great students at Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale and Princeton are all examples, and highest quality educational models, for World University and School. All of these organizations have endowments and/or financial stability, and the first 3 are all free. World University and School is like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware.
And to gain accreditation for World University and School - like Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale and Princeton have - monies are quintessential, as well as for WUaS to grow. These great universities are also the richest in this country; there's a correlation between academic quality and endowment size. And WUaS would like to compete with these by being free, and online, and robustly innovative (and also have a huge endowment), while collaborating as well through generation of great universities' open course ware - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings.
Accreditation is WUaS's next step, after incorporation in April 2010. (Educational Program for Gifted Youth, a grandfather of open, free, highest quality. online teaching and learning, out of Stanford, started as a free program, I think, but is no longer free, and E.P.G.Y is NOT accredited. I just met with the co-founders of EPGY at Stanford last week, and WUaS is so glad to have their support). And K-12 public education is free to 95%? of students in the U.S. and there are a handful of great, public, high schools, for example. How to offer a free MIT OCW-based education (2,045 courses are available for free, without degrees, for the self-motivated learner) online, and interactively in virtual worlds, to possibly 25 students at the BA, Law, M.D. and Ph.D. levels is a process which substantial monies, and an endowment, will make possible. And WUaS will be very competitive as a free degree university. Many European universities are also free or very low cost, and yet have significant budgets.
In terms of quality, WUaS would like to draw its student applicants for some matriculating classes beginning in 2014 from the equivalent of, for example, MIT applicants, perhaps by collaborating with MIT OCW, to offer interactive, online degrees.
And World University and School would like to hire interns for community building, fund raising and grant writing, as well as accreditation seeking. All of this costs money. WUaS's goals include creating jobs for people. But WUaS is a startup, just as MIT, Stanford, MIT OCW, Harvard, Google, and Wikipedia have all been startups. And angel philanthropists have been godsends to these organizations.
World University and School also plans to engage Quaker consensus and committee process and focus, organizationally. (WUaS would love to engage all of Kendall Crosslands Continuing Care Center, for example, as well as the Quaker world, over the years ahead, to develop a remarkable, friendly, teaching and learning conversation).
Education at MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, for example, are all conversations, in so many senses, via symbolic processes, words and about problem solving - both face-to-face and via texts and media. Online education, in virtual worlds, makes possible further symbolic exchange in a variety of new ways, - by drawing on these familiar, worthwhile and effective text, conversation, lecture and seminar approaches, now in virtual worlds and digitally. When avatars in virtual worlds get facial expressions (not something that WUaS is working on), both 'real' and fantastic, face-to-face idea exchange will develop anew.
But monies are key to WUaS's development is so many ways, for accreditation, for paying interns, for collaborating with MIT, for paying graduate students as instructors in virtual worlds for these courses, for developing robust technologies, - in becoming a great, online university. It's exciting to potentially collaborate with great universities (a league here: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings?), and will be even greater, when WUaS diverges, as people continue to innovate with information technologies and they develop. We're in the Ford Model T stage of information technology development, with so much potential and so many changes ahead. And I'd like WUaS, with monies, to become a great online university and school, exceeding, even, MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, in online teaching and learning.
For all this, World University and School greatly needs monies, and very soon (e.g. for accreditation and multiple other expenses), but we haven't yet successfully found our first angel philanthropists, or received our first grant monies.
Would you like to be on World University and School's Board of Directors / Clerks? You'd be wonderful at this, and, as a startup, WUaS is more in need of great Board members, and Board members will have much more influence here, than in almost any other organization I think of (especially with its goal of all languages and nation states).
Come out and visit Canyon in June with my mother, if it works out, and we can talk about this further face-to-face. :)
Love,
Scott

Red fox on rock: Community Center, For Harbin Residents with Cooking Facilities and is Quite Communal
Harbin ethnography:
... Not only was this a kind of giving back to Harbin's residents, but everyone cooking together in Fern Kitchen for decades is also a further example of how intermingling residents and guests have been at Harbin, as place, probably since 1972.
The Res. Center (or Community Center for Residents) only was finished in the spring of 2005, when I was a resident at Harbin. It has cooking facilities and is quite communal, in its design and layout, and in the feel of the place. It reminds me of a lot of West Coast hippy commune spaces. There's a piano in it, and a separate living room. No one sleeps there, because Harbin residents live in a variety of other places, in and out of doors on property, as well as in Harbin houses in Middletown. It's right next to the lower part of the garden, and has its own garden area with fruit trees and a fountain. This Community Center also has a large deck. I recently (April 1, 2011) attended a remembrance/memorial ceremony for a long time resident in the Harbin Res Center, and a dinner later that evening for residents only, on the deck, to which I was invited, and which was also in memory of Dee, who had just passed away. Chocolate covered strawberries and lots of delicious sweet things were served at the Memorial Service. In the Res Center's garden, next to the fountain with flowing water, which Bubblemeister made, is a new memorial bench to Dee, with the words' 'Dee – licious' spelled around an upthrusting-rock-out-of-the-stone-bench (Figure). In the Res Center, Dee and I also did a number of interviews for this Harbin ethnography in 2008. The Res Center, as place, represents a space for residents to be together, in which weekly dinners for Residents only on Friday evenings are now beginning to be held.
The decks and the growth of the Harbin pool area, as place, have happened organically, in a Harbin way, and often as spaces for relaxation in the nude. ...

Rainforest fern: Fern Community Kitchen is for Harbin visitors, Like a youth hostel kitchen, Cook, Meet, Talk, Float, Watsu
Harbin ethnography:
... In nice weather, it's so very pleasant just to linger in that corner or this cranny of this varied garden, so full of growing things.
Fern Community Kitchen, above the pool area, is for Harbin visitors, and, in many ways, is like a youth hostel kitchen, where people can bring their own food, store it in cupboards or large, stainless steel refrigerators. There are two stoves, with 6 burners each, around an elevated food preparation area, 4-5 sinks, a big counter for food preparation, 3 long, wooden tables with blue (there used to be folding chairs) chairs around them, dishes (some plastic for taking out to the sun deck and into the pool area) and cutlery, and two free boxes, one in a refrigerator. The kitchen area has a restroom with a toilet and sink. It also has bulletin boards for Harbin events, as well as for events outside of Harbin, with decidedly 'New Age' announcements in 2011, in the aggregate. And it has large windows along the pool area wall, with a little bit of a view of the Harbin warm pool. People meet each other, cook a meal for themselves, or share cooking a meal in a kitchen with fairly limited resources. Fern kitchen can be very colorful, with people who are somewhat 'out there.' (Harbin attracts a fair number of such folks:). It's also a place where people can meet, talk and then go do Watsu in the warm pool, for example. And the food people make in Fern Kitchen is often very innovative. From at least around 1994 (when I first came to Harbin) until 2005, Harbin residents, many of whom lived out of doors in tents, yurts and other interesting shelters, also prepared their food in Fern Kitchen. When Fern started getting a little too crowded, and Harbin also wanted to create a space for Residents' space, HCC built the Community Center (for Residents' only) near the middle parking lot. Not only was this a kind of giving back to Harbin's residents, but everyone cooking together in Fern Kitchen for decades is also a further example of how intermingling residents and guests have been at Harbin, as place, probably since 1972.

Wild turkey: Woke up, ... to the Joy of Life
Woke up, ... to the Joy of Life
Woke up
to a single, male turkey
in full, feather display,
gliding across the top
of a little, grassy ridge,
with a rounded,
colorful bodymind,
in dominant, alpha moment,
above, in the distance,
with California oaks
all around,
- it's an old scene.
(Why here now? ...
I don't know turkey biology ...
Was it because I opened
my car door,
that it strutted its stuff?
Is it mating season?
... didn't see any turkey hens nearby,
although they probably weren't far).
At the end of its glide,
it transformed itself
back into its
halt-walking,
vulture-like,
strange-torpedo,
missile-body
self-shape,
and clucked a little.
Waking by the side
of the road,
in rural California,
after a star-illuminated,
gorgeous night,
outside Harbin
where I sometimes camp, -
is this single, male Turkey
in full display,
a spiritual awakening?
And how is it possible to
observe this California,
natural-world moment,
as musical notation,
for bodymind bliss-elicitation?
Starry night walk, yes, - a little?
Turkey-glide-display, - not so much?
(There's something about
wild turkeys' appearances
I find unappealing).
So, were I to have gotten close,
but not too close,
to observe its beautiful feathers,
with near perfect round-symmetry,
in all brown, black, beige, white and rust colors,
with its blue face, and red, bulbous throat for warbling,
little shimmery, green feathers throughout,
with 5 inch long, pendant, chest feather,
its head, in the middle,
a little above center
of its tail display,
I might have merged
my mind into this natural,
for-observing Turkey Mandala of
male, spiritual nowness -
with appreciation, -
to come again later.
But this isn't the bliss,
for example,
I know from Mozart, the Grateful Dead,
or Matisse's 'Joy of Life'
or in flower photography's beauty,
or, especially, in the easing release
of the Harbin warm pool,
into one kind of contentment,
with naked people
coming into and out of it,
all around.
I open the car door again,
and this male turkey is gone.
MMmmm, ... natural, loving bliss
draws me fulsomely,
and this natural world
is opportunity to explore
bliss anew.
Wake up your biology of bliss,
Wake up your loving neurophysiology.
Music, nature and nudity, especially,
are all notational scores, -
improved upon with
loving, smart conversation,
and, even better, with singing,
with friends -
for heading into the
easing waters of musical joy.

Two alders: The Harbin garden area, As hippy place, Lingering there
Harbin ethnography:
... Water and hippy beauty continue to unfold at Harbin over the decades, as symbolic expressions of its milieu and emergent vision.
The Harbin garden area was bigger than it is now before the temple was finished in 2005. As hippy place, the Harbin fruits' and vegetable garden has had its ups and downs over the decades, given freedom-seeking hippies' work habits, and what Harbin has been willing to pay gardeners. In the past 5-10 growing seasons, it's flourished from the focus of, first, I think, All-Be, and more recently, Drona-Ma. In the past two or three summers, the Harbin vegetable garden has been, has been abundant, and beautiful, as a well-tended, and beautifully hippy-ordered, organic garden at the lowest end of the garden, near the rarely used green house, and some other garden houses. The garden is located between the main Harbin road, the Residents' Community Center with a big blackberry patch between, the garden gate near the Harbin flower house, some decks of Stonefront Lodge, the Harbin Theater building and its deck above, and separated by a fence from the newish Harbin temple. (Fig. drawing). The whole, Harbin garden, has its own magic, as place – as an open, central place to the Harbin Mainside area. Above the vegetable and fruit tree garden area, there's a little, homemade, outdoor stage with hay bales to sit on; I've never seen a performance here. Above this stage and the blackberry patch, paths continue up past Stonefront Lodge, and past the Gazebo. The main part of the Harbin is an open, sunny area with a few sculptures, some quirky statuary, a hippy, art circle on the ground, made not to last, like a Tibetan sand mandala circle. There are benches and seats, mullein plants, fruit trees, herbs and nice, slightly wild plantings. Over the decades, since 1972 and before (I heard in early March that there used to be a wild bear in a cage in this garden), a lot of vision and ideas have informed the Harbin garden, and what emerges is a welcoming place which many people pass through coming up from the lower parking lot, or when heading down to a dance in the Conference Center, or a yoga class in the temple. In nice weather, it's so very pleasant just to linger in that corner or this cranny of this varied garden, so full of growing things.

Deer Fern Fiddlehead: To someone interested in Developing / Volunteering at World Univ & Sch, Academic Subjects, Community, Fund-Raising, Learning Opp
To someone interested in developing / volunteering at World University and School, with an academic background and orientation:
Here are some possible foci ...
- Developing, for example, the Mathematics' subject page (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mathematics), creatively, e.g. with mind-turning resources, and with eventual, university degree-granting in mind, building on MIT OCW, Berkeley Webcast. et al.
- Developing the community-building intern position foci, particularly developing WUaS group-editing, like Wikipedia, seeking 'good edits' (e.g. students at great universities teaching to their cell phone video, then pressing a button to add it to WUAS), including writing community building job description.
- Developing the fund-raising intern position foci, including writing job description, and (co-)authoring a grant
(http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Intern_positions).
- Starting & developing a subject page(s) in areas you want to find employment in, or eventually study
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects
(http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE).
Thank you. WUaS is pretty open, and potentially helpful to s/he who engages it, with an invitation to click 'edit this page.' It's also a learning opportunity. Let's talk soon.
Best,

Best,
Scott

Bryce National Park Curves: The Art Flowing Walkway with Garden-area, Another curvy example of Harbin architecture
Harbin ethnography:
... It's a masterpiece (the Harbin temple) in a sense, and fascinating as a further artistic, symbolic and architectural expression of Harbin as place, and counterculture.
The Art Flowing-Walkway with Garden-area between Stonefront Lodge and the guest buildings called Azalea and Walnut, is another waterway-like, and curvy, example of Harbin architecture and design. As a kind of elaborate meandering bridge over actual water (overview drawing, Fig. 21), this walkway allows people to get from the lawn in front of Walnut, and the Gazebo, down to the Harbin market, and the road down to the Residents' Community Center, near the middle parking lot. The water which flows below this bridge, itself, traverses more of this walkable sculpture, in grottoes and pools, below the walkway. The pools themselves, and the little cave below the upper part of the walkway are decorated with lights, and have ceramic objects in the water, like lotus flowers. The plantings are both native and brought in, and create a quite woodsy and tunnel like feel when moving through this walkway. COMING UP FROM BELOW, you can either walk up the main way to the right, with a elongated ocher color cement bench, with a little cement table in front - all beautifully designed - wind sharply left under an arbor (right in front of some steps in front of Azalea guest building), past some pools and cave-like structure with lights under a bridge, and then come to the center point of this walkable sculpture. Embedded in the little open area, is a circular blue glass object, perhaps marking it as central. To the left is a bench sitting area, and if you turn again to the right, you find a big, welcoming, uniquely-designed, cement bench here, which feels a little Alice-in-Wonderland like in its spaciousness and curves. I've eaten lunch on this bunch here under the foliage many times. Heading up beyond the bench, and past the flowing water on both sides below, you can turn right to head out of the sculpture, through a narrow passage, past two recycling and trash containers, near Walnut guest building, and then head up to the pools. COMING UP FROM BELOW the other way, from near the pretty Harbin market, you can either linger at the 3-4 tables there with lunch, sitting on nice and funky sculpture cement benches and chairs, or head up past the market on the stairway in front of you, with Stonefront Lodge to your left. Walking up these stairs, you can hold onto the hand railing, also sculptured to look like tree limbs, with supporting vines – throughout the whole Art Flowing-Walkway – and in the stairway supporting vines (also made out of cement, I think), there area two clutches of ceramic, baby, slightly-cartoonesque, cheery, green dinosaurs, hatching out of eggs. As symbolic expressions of Harbin, they express an aesthetic appreciation for evolutionary history, as well as an appreciation for art. At the top of these stairs, you can turn right in toward the center of this sculptural walkway, with the blue, glass circle in the cement, in the bench area, or turn left, and walk up another flight of stairs to come out at the Gazebo. In the center, behind the smaller bench is a cast, iron pipe extending around 10 feet into the air, which looks to be possibly something unfinished. The whole sculptural area is nicely designed and made, and fills in a space and possibly a creek-waterway that might otherwise be a mess. By walking above this wet area, and turning it into a kind of fluid-in-its-design, sculptural park, Harbin gives further expression to its watery vision, informed by the pools and geothermal H20 abundance emerging from the earth. Water and hippy beauty continue to unfold at Harbin over the decades, as symbolic expressions of its milieu and emergent vision.
The Harbin garden area was bigger than it is now before the temple was finished in 2005. …

Maple Sugaring: Harbin Field Notes, Nuclear, Bonobo Play, Re-Learning Play in Modernity?
Arrived at Harbin yesterday evening around 6 in the rain - Nuclear - Bonobo - Play
At the Gate, we joked about what fine cesium 134 and cesium 137 were in the rain - radioactive iodine, too - from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactors - '... Oh, very nice cesium 134 from Reactor No. 2, or is it from Reactor No. 5?' (Nuclear humor is sad).
(Radioactive fallout from Japan reached Berkeley - http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/ucbairsampling).
There's always background radiation in the environment, and Denver, Colorado, for example, has more normal, background radiation than most places in the U.S. But it's never good to be exposed to any radiation.
The person at the gate mentioned a female News Anchor on CNN, who was sing-songing about how the radiation from Japan in southern California wasn't harmful, - seeming to miss the point. The Nuclear Industry and the mainstream Media have a long history together of representing nuclear fallout in the environment, often obfuscating the issues. And getting useful in-the-publics'-interest information hasn't been easy in the nuclear age. (This isn't the episode I think he was referring to, but it is illustrative - Revkin, Andrew C. 2011. [http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/25/radiation-cable-anchor-science/ Radiation + Cable Anchor + Science = ?]. March 25. New York, NY: The New York Times.)
It's sad to be living in Nuclear times, with the ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan. Fukushima is also a very, very bad, ongoing, science experiment. Science should be able to anticipate and inform engineering and planning for such catastrophes, BEFORE they occur, - especially in the nuclear age.

Harbin's milieu is welcoming. ... So nice to be here ... Went up to the warm pool ... Saw Song, and Lov and Letty, - all in the dressing room. There were also some pretty, young women there, - perhaps new to Harbin, - all preparing to soak, in bathing suits.
In the warm pool, people seem inward when soaking, - and when cuddling naked, as well. Eye contact with people coming into the pools generally isn't made, although people occasionally greet each other warmly in the waters, too. And cuddle puddles can be friendly.
In general, people are either standing in the warm water, sitting on the 'bench' at the end or on the 1/4 circular stairs (a kind of 1/4, reactangularly-long, round, underwater pyramid), leading out and to the hot pool.
Before arriving at Harbin today, I saw another interesting Bonobo video on the internet in a TED Talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/isabel_behncke_evolution_s_gift_of_play_from_bonobo_apes_to_humans.html). The researcher, Isabel, was suggesting that Bonobos 'play,' - as a way to explain their behavior, in general, including their flourishing sexuality. Her presentation, itself, is warm and outgoing, and in one video clip, which she showed for a long time, a juvenile female followed a juvenile male around in a circle holding his testicles from behind - around and around they went playfully having fun. Isabel, from Latin America, and who has studied at Oxford & Cambridge I think, delighted in the sexual subject of her presentation, and even in its potential for transformation through learning, with Bonobos as models for play, selected for by evolution. Her presentation was also in this spirit, and unusual academically. What can humans learn from such Bonobo and educational discourses? And how will ongoing learning about Bonobo and play - sex play, particularly - as discourse, transform some of the inhibitions and taboos of individuals and the societies in which we live?
At Harbin, I've never yet seen an adolescent woman follow an adolescent man holding his testicles from behind, plafully. Could Harbin learn? What has happened, for example, in HAI (Human Awareness Institute - Love, Intimacy, & Sexuality) workshops among adults?
And how might play flourishingly inform the exploration and cultivation of loving bliss, as well, - especially playfully?
MMmmm ...
My Harbin ethnography begins with 'Go play' ... (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2010/02/natural-bonsai-harbin-ethnography-today.html, and play is a theme in its chapters et al., here http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Harbin%20Book%20Section).
Up to the pools on this beautiful wet rainy sunny morning ...
The pools are a place for co-envisioning - of shared vision - in the easing warmth of the waters, - and while naked. The Harbin pools, as I understand them, are kinds of dreams-within-dreams, - with real qualities, and a kind of bodymind co-creating happening, as a countercultural unfolding.
As I was leaving, I saw a friend and Harbin resident over the years who works outside sculpting growth.
'Hey Lief,' I said, 'was Harbin more Bonobos in the past? '
'Bonobo?,' he asked, not understanding what I meant.
'Bonobo chimpanzees,' I said, 'very sexual ... was Harbin pretty wild (in a hippy sense) sexually in the past, I asked.'
And Lief smiled, ' Yea, In the late '80s, it was, I've heard, but before my time, - and not any more.'
(Last week, a friend from Britain who came to Harbin in 1985, as a backpacker, said residents lived in Azelea and Walnut in the mid-80s).
'Not sexual any more?' I asked, ' or just less so?
Lief, who grew up in the Ukiah area, has some Scots' ancestry and long hair, said 'yea, just less so.'
*
MMmmm ... learning to play again as an 'antidote' to Modernity .... and at Harbin? :)

Red Maple Leaves: What about climate change, ocean rise at the Diablo Nuclear Reactor, in Calif., or Seabrook in Massachusetts
What about climate change, ocean rise and Diablo Nuclear Reactor on the California coast,
or Seabrook Nuclear Reactor on the coast of New Hampshire on the East Coast?
Like the Earthquake/Tsunami that created an ongoing nuclear crisis, has this contingency been planned for in the U.S.? Or by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission?
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nuclear_Science_and_Engineering.
For radioactive fallout measurements in Berkeley from Fukushima Daiichi 6 nuclear reactors thus far, see http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/ucbairsampling, also at WUaS 'Nuclear' subject.

I've recently found this article that California's Nuclear Reactors don't include contingency plans for earthquakes: http://www.tfdnews.com/news/2011/03/16/86665-at-california-nuclear-plant-emergency-response-plans-dont-include-earthquakes.htm. I'll add this to WUaS's 'Nuclear' subject, as well.

Preliminary results show trace amounts of radioactive iodine (I131, I132), cesium (Cs137, Cs134), and tellurium (Te132) which are not naturally occurring elements and are assumed to originate from the Fukushima nuclear site. In context, we also see Be-7 and Ra-226 which are naturally occurring isotopes that also show up normally in rain water. Preliminary analysis show levels remain well below that which would cause health effects. We are currently awaiting better calibration of our detector system to publish amounts.
3/18: Due to the rainfall overnight and throughout the day, we expect an amount of "scrubbing" of the atmosphere as particles attach to rain drops. We have collected many liters of rainwater and are currently shifting our focus to sampling and testing the rainwater. Rainwater samples taken today will be counted overnight with results to be posted tomorrow morning. In addition, we are increasing our flow rate for air sampling and will not post air sampling results until Sunday night. However, due to the expected moderate levels of precipitation over the weekend we expect greater sensitivity within the rainwater samples.
3/17 20:00 - 3/18 10:00: No detectable counts from radionuclides of interest above background.
3/17 09:00 - 3/17 20:00: No detectable counts from radionuclides of interest above background.
3/16 18:00 - 3/18 09:00: No detectable counts from radionuclides of interest above background.

The UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering is currently performing measurements to detect a potential increase in radiation here in Berkeley that could be associated with the release of radioactive materials in Japan. We perform this measurement by sampling air flowing through a particle filter mounted at the top of Etcheverry Hall. We first calibrated the monitor to account for normal background radiation levels. After a period of 8-12 hours of particle collection, we take the filter down to our counting station in our laboratory and, using highly sensitive detection instruments, can determine the concentration of target radioactive elements within the air sample collected by counting gamma-ray photons emitted. This is to determine if any radiation signatures are present above normal background radiation levels.
The detection instruments we are using are not only able to measure the amount of radiation in the sample, but also its energy. More specifically, we measure gamma rays and their energies in our detector, which provides a unique fingerprint of a specific radioisotope. By measuring the energy of the gamma rays with high precision, we can not only determine the amount of radiation due to a specific radioisotope, but we can distinguish it from the natural background radiation we measure as well.
For example, we can measure gamma rays from isotopes of Cesium (Cs) such as Cs-134 or Cs-137, Iodine (e.g. I-131), or Tellurium (e.g. Te-132), which we would expect to see from the release due to the fission products in Japan.
It is important to realize that all because we can detect radiation does not mean it is harmful. Our instruments are so sensitive that we can measure radiation far below the levels of the natural background radiation we live in day to day. For example, even if we are able to observe a tens of counts per hour of I-131 or Cs-137, we have to compare that to a natural background radiation level of > 300000 counts per hour when expressed in these terms. Therefore, even if we were able to observe these small amounts of radiation, it will only lead to a very small increase in the radiation we are exposed to due to the natural radiation and will have no measurable health effect.
We express the biological effect of radiation in terms of doses and dose rates expressed for example in terms of millirem (mrem) or milli-Sievert (mSv) per hour, day, or year. One millisievert is equivalent to 100 millirems. The average dose of a person living in the U.S. is about 620 mrem (6.2 mSv) per year. This can be broken down into about 300 mrem per year due to natural background, such as radon and ultraviolet rays from the sun, and 320 mrem per year due to artificial exposures, such as X-rays or Computed Tomography (CT) scans. One Chest-CT scan produces about a 1,000 mrem dose of radiation exposure, or about three times the level due to just the natural exposure. The radiation levels we expect to measure due to the events in Japan will be 1,000 times smaller than the natural levels of background radiation.

Sphagnum Moss: The Harbin Temple – cobb and bale, or straw bale – wonderful roof … Pools are just up the hill
Harbin ethnography:
... As a Watsu School, and a place for workshops, the relatively small Dome complex is intimate and relaxed, facilitating the further creative development and teaching of Watsu (water shiatsu).
The cobb and bale Harbin Temple, or straw bale and mud hippie heyima, with a wonderful roof of spiraling, curved beams, lovely ocher, cosmic floor, and swervy walls, both outside and inside was built around 2005 in Mainside. There are often dances, musical happenings, and kirtan here, as well as three Harbin yoga classes a day. The pools are just up the hill, through the garden, and past Stonefront Lodge and the Gazebo. The Temple was built as a group effort, and Sunray facilitated much of the construction. The peak of the roof has a cupola, with a copper spire rising up to a crown of a golden orb with spikes on it, like a sun. There are two main entrances to it, and two rest rooms, near its front entrance. These rest rooms are particularly lovely in their own right, with curving walls, lovely views out the window, and great, funky design. The temple has a number of musical instruments in it, including a harmonium, and many pillows for sitting on, but no chairs. It has a number of wooden chests and cupboards that hold yoga props, and which can be sat on. About one quarter to one third of the temple is windowed from waist-level up, while the other two thirds has salmon-colored, swirvy walls, with occasional windows. Much of the temple has deep outside eaves, yet the temple is still open and light; the round skylight at the top allows in some of this light. The whole temple has great presence, feels like a native American sacred or ritual space, except that, as unique a structure as it is, it is made to code, and very modern in its ancient-lines and conceiving. It's central to Harbin's Mainside, just below the garden, and is one of the first structures you seeing when arriving at Harbin. In many ways, it's a hippy gem of vernacular architecture, which was well thought out, conceived of, designed, and constructed, partly by folks getting nude and throwing mud at the cobb structure a few times in 2005 (I was present at one such time). It's a masterpiece in a sense, and fascinating as a further artistic, symbolic and architectural expression of Harbin as place, and counterculture.
The Art Flowing-Walkway with Garden-area between Stonefront Lodge and the guest buildings called Azalea and Walnut, is another waterway-like, and curvy, example of Harbin architecture and design. ...

Pine Grosbeak: The bubble-shaped Harbin Domes are an ephemeral vision up on the hillside, across the valley, and a little paradise with warm pools
... As an ethnographer of this actual Harbin Conference Center, it's occurred to me recently to actually be at the Conference Center while I write about it, in the 'now,' so as to 'rif' with it and my experience of this building and its spaces and beauty (these blog entries also refer to the Conference Center: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Harbin%20Domes, some written while within the Conference Center), both with (perhaps at a dance and a workshop) and without other people present, as a new kind of anthropological, participant-observation method.
The bubble-shaped Harbin Domes are an ephemeral vision up on the hillside, across the valley, and a little paradise with two warm pools, which are also not geothermally heated. When there, the bubble domes surround the two lovely pools. The Dome area is quiet and serene, and the sand-colored Domes are light and pleasant to be among. The 4-5 (?) Domes themselves circle around the backside of the 2 pools, allowing for far-reaching views down and across the Harbin valley, when in the park-like enclosed space of the Domes. The Domes have an alternative feeling - a kind of hippie space, for alternative living. One rectangular room is built on top of the tallest Dome, and seems to be a kind of room a hippy could look off into the distance from, colorful towels and art hanging out the windows. There's also a community kitchen here – which feels a little like a youth hostel's. And the bas-relief swirls both on the outside of the Domes, and in the rooms themselves add to the bubble-like, rounded, moving, hippy, organic, hot springs' retreat center sense of the place. The Dome rooms are for rent as guest rooms. A few years ago, ownership and operation of the Domes transferred back to Heart Consciousness Church from the School of Shiatsu and Massage, for better management, I think. In the long parking lot, many solar panels act also as car ports. There is also a little smoking canopy-tent. As a Watsu School, and a place for workshops, the relatively small Dome complex is intimate and relaxed, facilitating the further creative development and teaching of Watsu (water shiatsu).

Red Maple Swamp: HARBIN BUILDINGS & ART, Harbin's buildings and art are further architectural, aesthetic and, symbolic expressions of place
Harbin ethnography:
... That Harbin, as place, gives form to kinds of serendipity and synchronicity which I associate with soaring and freedom is significantly influenced by the clothing-optional warm pool and the pool areas effects on people's bodyminds. (Modernity is fortunate to have Harbin, and that Harbin has hippy-navigated the possibly many stormy countercultural seas it's faced, since 1972).
HARBIN BUILDINGS AND ART
Harbin's buildings and art are further architectural, aesthetic and, significantly, symbolic expressions of place. The Harbin Conference Center – for workshops and dances – with warm pools, which are not geothermally heated, was built in the early 1980s. It has probably hosted a lot of 'Human Awareness Institute (HAI) - Love, Intimacy and Sexuality' workshops over the decades, as well as Tantric Yoga workshops, which Stan Dale also taught, and so many other workshops under the sun, - many intimacy-related. Dances happen there on Tuesday and Thursday evenings these days, as well as an occasional drumming circle, as well as the all Harbin community Thanksgiving meal, which Ish also attends, for example. On the other main door, at the back, which relatively few people enter through, there's a plaque saying that it's the 'Stan Dale Conference Center.' Stan Dale was the founder of HAI, as far as I know, and instrumental in developing it, as well as a visionary (Ishvara 2008, Personal Interview with MacLeod). The brown Harbin Conference Center, with its great amount of wood and clean Scandanavian-like lines, possibly built much from workshop monies, as a place for New Age Harbin workshops and dances, has one, main workshop space, as well as a large front porch, and a least one living space, and is tucked away across the Harbin creek from the Mainside area, and is fairly close to the Harbin Gate, at about the same elevation. I've never participated in a many-day workshop there. And I have rarely seen anyone in its pools, - partly because I've never attended a workshop there. The pools may also be expensive to heat, and so get used for certain workshops only. As an expression of Harbin place, the dances I've gone to there, over the years, find freedom in its nice design and inner spaciousness.

The bubble-shaped Harbin Domes are an ephemeral vision up on the hillside, across the valley, and a little paradise with two warm pools, which are also not geothermally heated. ...

Western Pennsylvania Colors: Newspaper Story about World University and School? Tweets about Pittsburgh's Education, What makes WUaS unique
Dear Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area.
Thank you very much for considering writing a story about WUaS in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Like Wikipedia, WUaS is seeking to generate a group knowledge approach to an open, free university and school, where we can all teach to each other, with a focus on excellence. WUaS has already aggregated some of this open teaching and learning content from the Web (e.g. http://khanacademy.org is spread throughout WUaS, and Jimmy Ruska's helpful, fun, web design tutorials are here: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Web_Page_Design_and_Production; both are fascinating examples of individuals teaching to the Web, and are WUaS models) . And like the open, free, excellent MIT OCW (I enjoyed your article Eleanor here: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07322/834852-298.stm), Yale OYC, Stanford Engineering Everywhere (SEE), etc., WUaS would like to facilitate access to, conversation with, and building upon great universities' open course ware for its academic standard, making this wiki-available to everyone, and eventually for free degrees.
Thank you, too, for your helpful overview of a city's educational foci, Eleanor, in Twitter - http://twitter.com/#!/Eleanor_Chute.
What can World University and School offer Pittsburgh? (... at this point, as a free, open teaching and learning wiki resource, which thrives on group knowledge production, and people clicking 'edit this page,' and making good edits, and adding great content?). There's a free, doctoral degree from Harvard (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#Free_Ph.D), for one. And as a growing, educational meta-directory, creative commons, free and open source, there are already a great many resources linked at WUaS, for the self-directed learner
(e.g. online Libraries -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources;
online Museums -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Museums ;
Free educational software -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Educational_Software ;
the beginning of an all instrument Music School -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School,
with online jamming possibilities, and much, much more.)
What can it offer Pittsburgh in the future? Free degrees (vis-a-vis your article on the costs of education here, Eleanor - http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11041/1123032-298.stm - for example), and a developing, learned and focused conversation about almost any fascinating subject (e.g. anyone can add a subject they are interested in, both 'academic' and 'open,' and MIT OCW courses anchor the academic subjects). As an aggregator of free, educational resources, especially online degrees and certificate programs from all over the world, I hope WUaS will become a rich resource for all for free, online credentialed learning. This 'Subject Template' is important for understanding WUaS's future, as well: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE.
None of the other free, online university projects (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#Course_listings.27_aggregates) focus both on Wiki (editable web pages) and great universities' open course ware (this is WUaS's list of great universities' whose open course ware WUaS will focus on aggregating with time - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings), where you or I can also teach to our web cameras or in virtual worlds, that I have seen. This distinguishes WUaS from all other online university projects, as far as I can tell. And education hasn't taken advantage of the distributed nature of the web - a real time worldwide communication network, in its infancy - where we are all producers and consumers of teaching and learning resources, for very, very low costs.
In what ways could WUaS benefit from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette coverage? Credibility / legitimacy, visibility and fund-raising contacts are key benefits, besides helping to build a community of Universitians - a group of teachers, learners and editors - like Wikipedians. Getting / Google committee decision-making process, as we expand. And WUaS would like to scale up to the size of an Intel, for example - potentially in all 3,000-8,000 languages and nation states).
Thank you again for considering the possibility of writing a story, and let's stay in touch. I may return to Pittsburgh for my mother's birthday (on April 2nd), and a favorite Shady Side, high school, English teacher, Bill Tadler's 75th birthday (on April 9th), and would love to talk with you in person, Eleanor, if you might be available (and if I come). WUaS is also curious what open, free resources both of you would suggest adding?
I think WUaS's open teaching and learning wiki will benefit Pittsburgh significantly, and also be a great scoop for the Post-Gazette.
All the best,
Scott

Hudsonian Godwit pair: Where Harbin visitors & residents soar, beyond the familiar flow-patterns, are in the freedoms and serendipities of this place
Harbin ethnography:
... These flow-patterns have emerged since 1972, and are pretty familiar to frequent-floaters, as well as Harbin residents.
Where Harbin visitors and residents soar, beyond the familiar flow-patterns, are in the freedoms and serendipities of place. The Harbin valley generates much Harbin serendipity, here, meaning “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way, {originally coined, in 1754, “by Horace Walpole, suggested by The Three Princes of Serendip, the title of a fairy tale in which the heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of}” (Apple Dictionary 2007, v. 2.0.3), and referring, in this ethnographic interpretation to happy, beneficial, hippy, chance events, whether unexpected loving intimacy, or remarkable 'flow' experiences at dances, or at musical happenings. Synchronicity, in terms of Harbin as place, refers to “the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection” (Apple Dictionary 2007, v. 2.0.3), - for example, to the little things that happen when sleeping on a tent platform, or visual-instantiations or beauty in the pools, or around music, or seeing a wondrous, old friend, here, in my experience. It's partly the effects of the waters, the nudity, the intimacy in the air, and the hippie ethos, with related radical envisioning, - and when it all comes together (synchronistically), a kind of peaking can occur that's difficult to explicate, unique-to-the-individual, and has to do with Harbin as counterculture. As a last example of place-based serendipity, envisioning and freedom, “The idea of Harbin as a University was explored in the 1960s, before Ish bought the property, and I've seen it mentioned again in 1996 in a publication which I think Ish likes, and hand a hand in writing, called "Living the Future," which gives an idea of how they were envisioning Harbin then. I need to find out how Ish thinks about the term 'heart consciousness church' and how that emerged around 1977. Whatever happens in the pool area, including a kind of wonderfully and deeply released envisioning that then gives rise to well being and serendipity, as well as in some ways the extraordinary gestalt or milieu of Harbin, where intimacy and sexuality are valorized, seems key to the Harbin experience” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, April 5, 2008). And, further, here's an ethnographically reflexive example, focusing on narrative and serendipity: “How do unfolding narratives and serendipity work in the particular at Harbin? If this is my work here writing this, as part of ethnographic field notes, it’s great to do it in the pool area at Harbin, where I am at present. Can I tie each word to the cultivation of loving bliss, neurophysiologically? Using words as feedback mechanisms in the ‘flow’ experience of writing, can I bring forth new ways of experiencing loving bliss while doing this, as well as share this with others” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, February 13, 2008). Here place informs ethnographic narratives and gives rise to enjoyable serendipity and synchronicity. (More on this later). As a last example, ”In places where desire is {more} in the air {than other places}, relative to clothed culture, for example, serendipity and certain kinds of empathy, understandings, and shared experience may exist. I’ve found that to be the case at Harbin a fair amount” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, April 20, 2008). As a whole, and as a sociocultural process, and in terms of temporality, as well, it's place – the pool area and the beautiful, Harbin valley, which informs both qualities of serendipity and synchrony. The inclusive, open, envisioning, hippy Harbin, as exemplified by the pools and unique art are what brings people home.

That Harbin, as place, gives form to kinds of serendipity and synchronicity which I associate with soaring and freedom is significantly influenced by the clothing-optional warm pool and the pool areas effects on people's bodyminds. Hudsonian Godwit: The Harbin property and Mainside, as topography, have fairly familiar people flow-patterns, as a kind of platform
Harbin ethnography:
... The new Diamond J ranch which is quite close to Harbin Hot Springs, probably has more traffic from Harbin Hot Springs, than Sierra Hot Springs has with Harbin, but what the Diamond J ranch is going to be used for is still taking shape.
The Harbin property and especially the most-frequented Mainside area, as topography, have fairly familiar people flow-patterns, as a kind of platform, even. The Harbin valley is a fairly open place, and there are very few 'banned,' or off-limits' parts of Harbin, except, for example, when there's a retreat in the Conference Center (or Meadow building), when the perimeter of these places defines what is off-limits to non-workshop participants. While what's open, and what's not accessible, may have changed over time since 1972, people who come through the Harbin Gate often find where they're going to sleep that night, whether in a room or camping out, put away their food in Fern community kitchen, and then head for the pools. After the pools, they may simply hang out in the pool area, or back where they're spending the night, or wander down to Mainside to the Blue Room cafe, or the Harbin Market, and then go to a yoga class, or a 2 hour workshop. At dinner time, they may head to the Harbin Restaurant, or to Fern community kitchen. In the evening, they may head to a dance, an AA (any A) meeting, or see a film or two in the Harbin movie theater. During much of this, guests and residents may be heading, naked, into and out of the pools. Residents' flow-patterns are more focused on the what makes Harbin function as a retreat center, but residents, too, head into the pools, to the dances, or to the movies, a lot. Harbin residents also help give form to the Harbin's culture, as place, in terms of, for example, participating in the cuddling in the pools, exploring contact improvisation at the dances, or simply hanging out. These flow-patterns have emerged since 1972, and are pretty familiar to frequent-floaters, as well as Harbin residents.

Ice on cedar: Harbin field notes & poem - I came upon a feast of lights spread out across the hill and valley
I came upon a feast of lights spread out across the hill and valley
I came upon a feast of lights
speckle-spread out across
the hill and valley,
and reveled
in their evening softnesses.
And from Harbin's redwood,
sleeping deck, below, I saw
the Gazebo's octagonal lights,
of Mainside,
a tasty pie of illumination,
ready to spin off as a
psychedelic-whirligig
through the universe
but, instead, is a center
of this light beauty at Harbin,
in the winter, at night,
from here.
I walked in on the dark,
empty, village path at night.
No one was around ...
It would have been easy
to stumble on some jutting rock,
but I didn't,
and so came to this
stopping place
of glimmering, night-light beauty,
from this redwood deck, -
which, so full in the day
with resting, naked bodyminds,
in solace-ease
from modernities' stresses,
and welcomed these visions.
Now heading into the pool area,
I bring this light show with,
and in, my bodymind,
to bring me deeper
into the mysteries of
aliveness, -
naked, warm and free -
in the warm pool.
Where is she, my love,
with whom this all to share,
and rock out with in,
Oh, this beautiful orchard
of ripe fruit human living ...
Pools now,
in warm oneness ease ...
moving on in now ....
What delight this night
in the warm pool.
Why this particular
bodymind joy
this eve?
Nothing special ... Don't know ...
Because I talked and connected
with a smart, receptive friend,
in words, about loving bliss,
on the phone coming up?
MDMA - methylene dioxy meth amphetamine,
theoretically as biochemical bodymind experience for 75%,
Scottish Country dancing for
series of tones/music, movement, interactive sociability
Ginseng tea?
The weather of my bodymind
hasn't found its cello bow strokes
of loving bliss musics, as I write -
and the concert hall
of this Harbin warm pool
and my bodymind
are conducive, but don't cause,
these joys. ...
I like this weather, though, tonight.
Movies in the theater tonight?
'Tamara Drewe,' a film from Dorset England,
and 'No End in Sight' (2007), about the
American War in Iraq,
and U.S. governmental wrongdoing, yet
again, and so soon after the
American War in Vietnam,
and the other wars in between.
When will we ever learn? ....
that war is not the answer (FCNL).
The cast of characters at the top
are again the perpetrators of
this wrong, with tons of money,
through organizational
inability, and ineptitude, it seems.
And the film 'Tamara Drewe'
also depicted an old theme of
British village life, and love,
with English characters in 2009.
Moral stories, both,
and all for learning about others
from this Harbin theater,
in northern California in 2011.
Given these depictions
where's the 'love,' in sociocultural life,
let alone bliss?
Why is love so faint, so often, -
Pan trodlodytism (common chimpanzee-ness of humans)? -
and how to move, culturally,
to fulsome love, as widespread discourse?
Love is one of the best things in life -
And while Modernities' economic conveniences
are benefiting some in the world,
let's see if they can benefit all,
and with love, as well.

From the round table in the corner of Harbin's restaurant, you can see the green-copper-with-gloden-star-orb spire of the Harbin Temple against the beautiful forested side of the valley, and across the valley through the other window, you can seem the Harbin Domes bubbling up in the distance.

Northern California Quail: Harbin's Properties as Expressions of its Vision
Harbin ethnography:
... So, Harbin as place with pools, and vision, welcomes people through its gate, and some stay, become part of the community, and a few develop their own businesses on Harbin property.
So, while Heart Consciousness Church's properties, as places, have differential economic value, they are also all expressions of Harbin's vision, emerging since 1972, and thus their economic significance, or potential, doesn't play an important role in defining their future. The Harbin property and the new Diamond J Ranch are owned and operated by HCC, while Sierra Hot Springs is only operated by HCC, not owned, in a somewhat passive manner. For example, these places aren't being developed for condominiums and maximum profit, perhaps due to a Harbin-informed conservation-oriented ethos, shaped significantly by the 1960s. And the various vendors, and single-proprietor businesses on Harbin property, also have their place-situatedness, and economic value, under the HCC organizational umbrella. One hippy vendor has told me he has to continually negotiate with the M.D.s ('managing directors') about the terms of his place on the grassy area across from the Gazebo, a little ways up from the Labyrinth. And there's relatively little travel between residents at Harbin and residents at Sierra Hot Springs, for example. These two communities of HCC residents are kinds of tribes, located in place. The new Diamond J ranch which is quite close to Harbin Hot Springs, probably has more traffic from Harbin Hot Springs, than Sierra Hot Springs has with Harbin, but what the Diamond J ranch is going to be used for is still taking shape.

welcoming visions
of la lumière.
Heading now

I bring this light
show with, and in,
my bodymind,
to venture deeper
into mysteries

naked, warm and free -

Where are you now,
my love,
with whom this all to share,
and rock out in with,
all together?
And, oh, what beautiful orchards
of ripe, fruit, human living! ...
Pools now,
in warm-oneness-ease ...
Heading on in now ....
What delight this night,
in this very warm pool!
Why this particular,
bodymind joy,
this eve?
Nothing special ... don't know ...
Was it because I talked,
and connected,
with a smart, receptive friend,
in words, about loving bliss,
on the phone coming up?
We thought outloud about
this bliss-love:
Ecstasy is MDMA,
methylene dioxy meth amphetamine, -
theoretically,
a love-everything-in-the-world-intensely,
for 5-8 hours,
biochemical, bodymind,
reference experience
for 75% of we ingesters, -
for affective euphoria, -
and one,
of so, so many,
replicatable qualities of bliss,
for we who are biological beings, -
symbolizing, human primates,
shaped by evolution
by natural selection.
And we talked further about
Scottish Country Dancing,
which we've done together,
quite long ago,
with bliss,
via its ebullient
series of tones,
its music, movement,
and sociable interactiveness.
It's a related, also replicable -
like technology, - example.
Was it, too, the Ginseng tea,
earlier today, of which
I hadn't drunk in a while?
Still, the weather of my bodymind
hasn't yet found its
cello bow strokes
of loving bliss agency,
of this music-making,
here and now,
when desired.
And as I write,
and while in concert hall,
of this Harbin warm pool, -
my bodymind, yes,
is conducive to such bliss,
yet, I haven't caused
these joys.
What can cause bodymind,
loving bliss, whenever, but,
especially, here now?
I do, though,
like this weather,
here tonight,
in winter,
at Harbin.

reference experience
for 75% of we ingesters, -
for affective euphoria, -
and one,
of so, so many,
replicatable qualities of bliss,
for we who are biological beings, -
symbolizing, human primates,
shaped by evolution
by natural selection.
And we talked further about
Scottish Country Dancing,
which we've done together,
quite long ago,
with bliss,
via its ebullient
series of tones,
its music, movement,
and sociable interactiveness.
It's a related, also replicable -
like technology, - example.
Was it, too, the Ginseng tea,
earlier today, of which
I hadn't drunk in a while?
Still, the weather of my bodymind
hasn't yet found its
cello bow strokes
of loving bliss agency,
of this music-making,
here and now,
when desired.
And as I write,
and while in concert hall,
of this Harbin warm pool, -
my bodymind, yes,
is conducive to such bliss,
yet, I haven't caused
these joys.
What can cause bodymind,
loving bliss, whenever, but,
especially, here now?
I do, though,
like this weather,
here tonight,
in winter,
at Harbin.

Umbilicaria: A handful of businesses on the Harbin property, The Harbin-family is what makes the place able to have businesses
Harbin ethnography:
... In many ways, mingling naked in the warm pool, and pool area, is an important metaphor for ownership at Harbin, where the 'shared vision' of Harbin as place is a kind of ownership.
While there are a handful of businesses on the Harbin property, in many ways, being part of this place, this Harbin-family is what makes the place able to have businesses. Here place, belonging, and vision, here in the sense of countercultural vision, inform business practices. These businesses include Heart Consciousness Church's hotel business, the Harbin Restaurant, the Harbin Market, the Blue Room Cafe, the School of Shiatsu and Massage, a Kombucha (vinegary drink) manufacturing business, three vending booths in the warmer months, which mostly sell silks, tie die and related, beautiful New Age goods. All of these businesses are 'places' at Harbin. There's also a Harbin hulu hoop business, which isn't place based. And there are Harbin workshops, some facilitated by Harbin residents, some by frequent floaters, and some by people less connected with Harbin. Looking at various bulletin boards at Harbin – a) in Fern community kitchen near the pools, b) outside the restaurant, c) near the Stammtisch in the Blue Room – have postings for both Harbin and outside-Harbin businesses. I think that the School of Shiatsu and Massage, the summer-time vendors of silks and tie die, and the year-round producer of Kombucha – have a rental relationship to Heart Consciousness Church, whereas the guest rooms, restaurant, Blue Room Cafe, Harbin Market are all part of Heart Consciousness Church's core business. Ishvara once told me in an interview (MacLeod, Scott Gordon K. 2008. Ishvara (Bob Hartley) - Harbin Hot Springs' Founder – Interview. April 8. Harbin Hot Springs, CA: Personal Interview 7:15) that he envisions Harbin as an open market place of ideas, and even of businesses, but when I began listing some of the businesses on property and suggested open-market possibilities, we didn't continue the line of conversation. All of the various bodyworkers at Harbin are on staff, and so are part of the HCC core business. So, Harbin as place with pools, and vision, welcomes people through its gate, and some stay, become part of the community, and a few develop their own businesses on Harbin property.
So, while Heart Consciousness Church's property, as places, has differential economic value, they are also all expressions of Harbin's vision, emerging since 1972, and thus their economic significance or potential doesn't play an important role in defining their future. ...
