9-28-2012

PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

California has been home to human beings for at least 12,000 years, with the period of European-American settlement representing only a tiny fraction of this time. The first Europeans to arrive in California encountered hundreds of thousands of people organized into hundreds of distinct tribal groups. They flourished in the bountiful hills and valleys of what would someday become the Golden State.

The contact between these first Californians and successive waves of newcomers over the three succeeding centuries was marked by the utter devastation of Native American people, families and society. The colonial regimes of Spain and Mexico, through disease and slavery, reduced the indigenous population by more than half. Then the Gold Rush came, and with it a wave of new diseases and outright violence that halved the population again in just two years. The newborn State of California institutionalized violence against Native Americans, enacting policies of warfare, slavery and relocation that left few people alive and no tribe intact. In his 1851 address to the Legislature, our first Governor, Peter Hardeman Burnett, famously stated, “That a war of extermination will continue to be waged between the two races until the Indian race becomes extinct, must be expected.”

In spite of Burnett’s prediction, California today is home to the largest population of Native Americans in the fifty states, including both the rebounding numbers of our native Tribes and others drawn to the Golden State by its myriad attractions. The success of tribal businesses and the rise of tribal members in all walks of life today stand as testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of our native peoples. If Governor Burnett could not envision a future California including Native Americans, it is just as impossible for us today to envision one without them.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim September 28, 2012, as Native American Day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 8th day of September 2012.

ChemLab Boot Camp "Episode 2: Overwhelmed" ... http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/chemistry/chemistry-lab-boot-camp/episode-2-overwhelmed/ ... from MIT OCW Highlights for High School ... It's a good introduction to how much focus / work will be part of completing the 32 courses for a free, online bachelor's degree at World University and School (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School) ... In ChemLab Boot Camp, if you pass this 2 1/2 week course, you get to work in a MIT Chemistry Laboratory ... check out the TAs in this video, too, who may be examples of this ... Episode 1 is already posted at WUaS's wiki chemistry page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Chemistry - so I probably won't add this also, although WUaS would like eventually to begin to hire interns to add such resources, and develop World University and School in so many ways (e.g. in all languages and countries). In a sense, MIT Chemistry Professor John Dolhun is WUaS's first, chemistry professor, (for free, International Baccalaureate degrees, too, - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme - in the U.N. languages, to start, perhaps in 2015) thanks to these videos, in part. :)

She dappled sun

She dappled sun

She dappled sun
in grass green gold and oak
this illuminating afternoon
along the way,
in Lake County, California,
to Harbin.

Driving offered flying
Freedom
as I danced and rolled
with the curves on the road,
smooth-delighting in the
unfolding light
as music through
these tunnel trees
of forests, in sunbelt California -
dreamlike drive-movements of
slow-present-glide,
with blissing,
while descending the hill
from Mt. St. Helena
to Middletown.

Harbin
Valley offered slow,
and warm wet
and then ease
with oneness,
In the field, -
And I yielded
in this freedom ...
soon in the flickering
blue waters.

But first I walked
to the half village,
near the Warehouse,
along its less trod path,
to bring Heartsong
a birthday torte,
raspberry, made in France
and procured in Napa,
a surprise on his doorstep
for the morrow.

Alighting to write
this,
along this way,
I smelled fragrance
in nature,
mint-ish, but suffusing the air,
and saw grapeleaves on
vines spread in around light,
rising also from the forest floor.

How to honor Heartsong's birthday
in specialness, and with care,
quietly, at Harbin,
for to generate loving energy
for him on this day?

I left at his door the torte,
as well as some little, neon, birthday candles,
only to find out later,
near the cold plunge and sauna,
that Heartsong is traveling,
far, far away, ~ and for weeks.

Heartsong offered torte
on his birthday
from his doormat
on a dappling sun,
illuminating day, -
thank you, and
happy birthday, Heartsong.

Universal education {MIT-centric} is indeed the (a main) goal of World University and School, which is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW.

For this, WUaS is planning a wiki, open-teaching-and-learning, school page, to begin, for all 7,358+ languages (per "The Ethnologue"), and greater than 205+ countries, (per the Olympics), as well as building on the 500+ pages in English.

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States

Via these pages, we can all teach to and learn from each other ... WUaS is for people-to-people, open, free, teaching and learning.

Reef Seahorse: Recently published review of Taylor Walsh's 'Unlocking the Gates: How and Why Leading Universities Are Opening Up Access to Their Courses,' CMU's Open Learning Initiative (OLI), Why not a digital robot instead of a dashboard, per the above 'Digital Dashboard' article? WUaS building in / coding for the possibilities of innumerable, scientific studies of student learning

http://www.rossum.com/philip10/1/45_600.jpg

SC: Check out my newly published review - http://www.tofp.org/resume/Carson-UtG.pdf  - of Taylor Walsh's 'Unlocking the Gates: How and Why Leading Universities Are Opening Up Access to Their Courses' (Princeton U.P.).

Good review, S! ... Can you point please to any critical, generative reviews of CMU's Open Learning Initiative (OLI) you've enjoyed? Thank you!

(I found this online ... http://www.cmu.edu/about/leadership/president/Carnegie_Mellon-Open_Learning_Initiative.pdf ... which is helpful).

from the  above CMU paper ... interesting ... "Three elements make OLI distinctive and powerful:

First, course creation moves from a solo performance to a team sport. OLI classes begin with interdisciplinary coursedesign teams of faculty content experts, human-computer interaction experts, learning scientists, designers, and software engineers. These teams design learning environments,
with course content, practice exercises, and review. They create intelligent tutoring modules, virtual laboratories, simulations, and very frequent opportunities for assessment
and feedback.

Second, the system collects data on each episode of learning. Just as Amazon, Google and Netflix discover our book or movie preferences by tracking our online actions, so can our OLI monitor the mouseclicks and keystrokes of users, generating data that shows at the most detailed level what learners are responding to (or not) in the learning environment.

Third, this rich trove of data provides immediate feedback to all of the participants. Everyone involved gets feedback— students, instructors, course designers, and learning scientists. Students can see at once how they are doing (instead of waiting a week for tests to be returned). Instructors can check a dashboard.

http://www.cmu.edu/about/leadership/president/Carnegie_Mellon-Open_Learning_Initiative.pdf

Why not a digital robot instead of a dashboard, per the above 'Digital Dashboard' (CMU / OLI) article?

*

World University and School would like to build in / code for the possibilities of innumerable, scientific studies of student learning, (and professors' teaching) and particularly their enjoyment of learning (e.g. 'flow'), by MIT researchers for example, from WUaS's beginning, and in all languages, in exchange for free bachelor, Ph.D. law and M.D. degrees ... and probably in WikiData / WikiBase ... so that MIT OCW-centric WUaS improves and develops with the web. What a trove of developing and emergent data this could be!

Courses with video from MIT OCW and Yale will probably be what World University and School accredits on beginning in April 2013, for our first, matriculating, online, bachelor's degree class in 2014, where WUaS will hire the matriculated, graduate school instructors from some of these universities -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings - to facilitate the conference method (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning) vis-a-vis such online MIT and Yale video lectures.

The books in these courses will probably be what the WUaS bookstore initially sells:
