MIT Tech Review-"Google is closing a bipedal-robot project, but the robot revolution is far from over," "CHAFT : DARPA Robotics Challenge 8 Tasks + Special Walking," Looks like there's even an #ActualVirtual, #PhysicalDigital GOOGLE scenario happening in StreetView here that could be adapted to Lego Robotics' scale, for far more design innovation ahead (e.g. by multiple Stanford students :)

Dear Stacey!

Thanks so much - so interesting and timely!

Am thinking I read a 'clash of civilizations' Fukuyama thesis in this article, but wonder too how spreading of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online universities in each of all ~200 countries' official and main languages, and with Lego robotics for engineering degrees, will complement this. ...

Just Tweeted about this - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1063562693896884224 ...

David, Hugh, Henry, Lillian, Rob and All,

Not enough kindness in the world (in my opinion). Curious how best WUaS could facilitate a single worldwide cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger backed by all ~200 nation states' central banks (think the Euro, 20 years or so in) ... and at a key moment of coding World Univ & Sch's new WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki as "front end" with Wikidata/Wikibase as "back end" for wiki learners / teachers in all 7097 living languages, - and indeed for all 7.5 billion people on earth as end users / Universitians at WUaS via an Universal Basic Income (UBI) ... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University ... in order to distribute this new currency (to smartphones and via bank cards) ... which would be taxable, so nation states would benefit too ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/05/neemtree-stanford-asia-1st-annual-us.html ... Would be kind too re potential singificant loss of jobs from automation and robotics worldwide. And students in WUaS's online Law Schools (see blog entry) planned in ~200 countries' official languages as part of 200 major online CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric WUaS universities could help write the code in each of all these countries for this (CS grad students too!). Free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees (reimbursed though from their nation states) would be an act of kindness as well.

I suspect you as a very high level software engineer, David, would know other great software engineers who could help with this as well.

'Twould be historic too, Hugh!

Cheers, Scott

And double drat - that you won't be able to make it (from this end too). Will be hunting the wild Fern Cake at The Scottish Gathering and Games in Pleasanton, CA - hosted 153 years / times by the Caledonian Society out west here ... And will keep my eyes peeled too for the unspoiled Scotch (sic) Egg which doesn't make people sick :) Whisky could be a tonic in these regards ... And both Fern Cakes and Scotch Eggs sound creatively Scottish! :)

Heading out for a walk now here in Canyon, CA, to see if I can spot some wild ferns, and potentially then even make my own fern cakes - while thinking of you, Susan. Fern isn't so dear when you pick it yourself! :)

Touching on Scottish freedom, and Bits-to-Bricks' Lego robotics in an innovative way for Scottish Country Dancing, I blogged a bit about some of this including piping here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/juglans-regia-153rd-scottish-highland.html ... Thinking about creating some online Scottish small pipe competitions and at World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes ... (I did win a Piobaireachd bagpiping medal competing at the Pleasanton Games a few years ago :).

Further Bits-to-Bricks' Lego robotics - eventually scalable - in an innovative way in the blog post that follows - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/deserts-of-california-archaeological.html - some with Scottish foci :)

As Aye,

Hi Susan, Jane, Jean & All,

Hi M,

I did actually make it to Stanford at 8am, went to the mini-Stanford book fair of Stanford authors, Met and talked with John Cronker MD '74 who wrote a book about chimps and parenting, and where Jane Goodall was his mentor in Gombe in Tanzania in the 1970s too. Interesting ... Met and talked briefly with Alexa Fitzpatrick, who went to Bowdoin, but didn't know Mary Lou, ... and then headed for a talk at 8:30 am by senior Stanford faculty member and Harvard Ph.D. about how to stop climate change - very edifying and comprehensive. No other talks today are open to the General Public, but will hang out for a while too, because Stanford and Homecomings are interesting, albeit tired.

Met some very nice alums too. One asked what I'd like to teach at Stanford, after my mentioning to him that I'm seeking a position here, and I further developed the idea for this third course - 'Programming & Robotics for Anthropologists: Scratch drag & drop language with Lego WeDo2 MindStorms EV3 in the field & in water' - which I've been thinking about (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/field-and-water-programming-robotics.html) partly from the talk I gave at UC Berkeley on Friday - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/lewis-river-washington-state-uc.html ...

Realism at Stanford (thinking Lacan and George A here in terms of realism), and Stanfordians' larger-than-life-intelligence and the culture (very Stanford international it is) that has kind of emerged from this is fascinating to observe. I enjoy the ethos of Stanford's excellence and smarts, and appreciate too the social conscience that's still in the woodwork and air emerging from the '60s / '70s which decades played a huge role at Stanford too. Stanford-ites since then have explored a lot a lot a lot, and probably pushed the envelope in fascinating ways ... but I don't know how much I'll learn about any of this in an upcoming planned book comparing the STEM Ethos's of Stanford and MIT - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/03/biocoenosis-fascinating-mit-media-lab.html?

Scottish Country Dancer ROBOTS that 'GIVE WEIGHT'?
November 4, 2018

Alas, David!

Would be great to explore Scottish Country Dancing from the Niagra Falls' dance next May in #VR or #AR #AugmentedReality (with a realistic virtual earth as platform! - thinking Google Street View with time slider +) so you could join in from Seattle, but I don't think WUaS will have this together by then ... but eventually, and where 'giving weight' in SCD might be with robots eventually from home !

This is probably not a dance on the St. Catherine's SCD ball program, but who's that lass in 3rd position - https://youtu.be/tmcE0ttJBoQ and https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1059239130004185088 - and is that her Mum in 2nd position? They both dance so beautiful ... all eight of them do - from Newcastle, in the north of ... well, in Northumbria ... And might any of them be dancing at St. Catherine's next spring? (The dance program isn't published yet - http://www.rscdsstcatharines.ca/upcoming-events - but good to know that Don Bartlett & the Scottish Heirs are playing the music - whom I don't know ... Sioux or Rob, have you heard them?)

This side of the Atlantic changes people - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/cardoon-freeuniversaleducation-at-wuas.html (check out too the longevity article here from MIT Media Lab Director Joi Ito re gene editing ... ) - and possibly for a long time :)

Am still a bit into the Grateful Dead pre 1979 I have to say, however ... but hope to get into the parenting mode before long, like you :)

Appreciating your email, David,
Scott

More about comparing the STEM ethos of MIT and Stanford here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/northern-spotted-owl-comparing-stem.html ...

And if you didn't know the SCD dance band, Don Bartlett & the Scottish Heirs - https://www.scottish-country-dancing-dictionary.com/video/fyket.html - now you do, or could, or what ever ... :)

Sioux ... see you there (contingent on finances here ...) ... Rob? :) Anyone else? There's probably enough time to join an introductory SCD class near where you live in January ... to learn the footwork (& for Fun Fitness Friendship to echo some British Isle's SCD sentiments ... https://twitter.com/RscdsYD/status/1058896596488912896 ... https://twitter.com/RSCDSOxon/status/1058141062340980741 ...  ) ... Ongoing interest in developing SCD music-making for bliss-generation here ... quite explicitly and consciously and technologically ... how? is the ongoing main question (pour moi:)

My tastes head in some ways to Grateful Dead concerts (alternative culturally too:) in the 1970s for Fun Fitness Friendship in Augmented Reality eventually ... but SCD is an interesting exploration in these regards (having begun SCD in the 1970s - avec certains d'entre vous)

Thanks, Prof. Hennessy, Mark, Rob, Hugh and David, and All,

Am continuing to seek a faculty position at Stanford, had two scheduled video conferences with Stanford Peace Innovation Institute's Mark Nelson about this fairly recently about this agenda doc, have been in communication with and emailed recent Stanford President/now Chair of Alphabet John Hennessy my MIT Media Lab faculty application earlier this year (which I'm attaching), have been in touch with Stanford Dean Larry Lagerstrom and an Associate Vice Provost Paul Marca there about this as well. Also gave a talk in the UC Berkeley Tourism Studies' lecture series on Fr Oct 26, 2018 in these regards, which video, related resources and slides you'll find interesting - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/lewis-river-washington-state-uc.html - and I'm grateful that UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Nelson Graburn, who organizes this, wrote the Forward to my actual virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - and my third book is coming out soon this autumn.

Seeking to teach the first of 3 courses beginning in January at Stanford - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html (the other two you'll find here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/field-and-water-programming-robotics.html).

World University and School as major online MIT OCW-centric universities and high schools in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, planning Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. degrees, is a remarkable opportunity for Stanford in these regards (especially since MIT has neither a Medical nor a Law School) - and CC-4 MIT OCW is in 5 languages to begin. California and Californians would get MIT for free (in a sense - since WUaS would seek reimbursement from all ~200 countries' Ministries of Education per student per year) - an amazing opportunity for both Stanford and California. WUaS is currently waiting to begin accreditation with the CA BPPE -

https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134 (and then WASC senior). And World Univ & Sch is a A) non-profit, and incorporated as a forked parallel second legal entity, the WUaS Press / Corp, a B) for-profit general stock company, in 2017, two further great opportunities - both planned in all ~200 countries and in all 7097 living languages with machine learning and machine translation.

All the best, Scott

Hear ye, hear ye,

Univ of Edinburgh Professor Gary West (of BBC Pipeline renown) will have given the Hamish Henderson Lecture earlier today - https://twitter.com/EU_SSSA/status/1061221257864196097 ... Hamish Henderson was a defining Scottish ethnologist, (a Quaker too, I understand), and one who got to know the "wee folk" and write about them in a way few have done. Gary was my advisor at the University of Edinburgh in 2003-2004 in the School of Celtic and Scottish Studies, when I studied the island archipelago off the west coast of Scotland called St. Kilda as nascent online 'place,' and as part of two networks - the internet, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This St. Kilda project is a harbinger of my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project (~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~), as well as a realistic virtual earth and universe, at the cellular and atomic levels too, and for a new social science / humanities' / STEM method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy ... or which Scots in academia might call anew ethno-wiki-virtual-world-ology, since Scots seem to focus on ethnology in lieu of anthropology or ethnography :)

Here by the way is the Scottish_Gaelic_language wiki subject at World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic_language - planned in Scots' Gaelic ... along with all of the 7,097 living languages (per Ethnologue) at WUaS, each a wiki subject or school in that language for open teaching and learning - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages.

And David Chalmers, philosopher of mind, who gave a  great philosophy talk on the actual and the real (which is a long time ongoing focus of mine - eg https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ActualVirtual&src=typd & https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/virtual ) at Stanford in May 2017 - and whom I heard too in Edinburgh on Thanksgiving 2003 - gives a version of his actual-real Stanford talk here in December 2017 - https://youtu.be/QMLojOcOJFI :) I hope somehow we might inquire of him to help please code for actual-virtual physical-digital questions of consciousness (and esp. re all languages), as World University and School seeks to develop a realistic virtual earth with avatar bots, of humans and other species - of individuals as well - for brain and cognitive science and questions of consciousness, and at the cellular and atomic levels.

Want to know about Scottish philosopher, David Hume and his passions - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1050096718438522880? On first glance, The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy touches on this question more than most resources I've found online :)

So hear ye, hear ye, Univ of Edinburgh Professor Gary West will have given the Hamish Henderson Lecture earlier today ... :)

As aye,
Scott

Good morning, M,

How did your book reading go? How are you?

Really really nice Scottish music last night at Patti's and Bruce's played by Chris Duncan and Catherine Strutt ...

https://youtu.be/bioMh7CHCG4 and https://youtu.be/yXtlubYZKoM - a bit of joie de vivre with good musical synergy emerging (Maybe it's a California ethos that at times makes me worried ... and combined with an Australian ethos too ... both have frontiers in them in relatively recent history, but I also really enjoyed the music itself). Both Catherine and Chris played very well together ... Glad to see Jonathan and Ellen Lovell there, and Scot Linda Henderson who lives in Berkeley, as well.

...

Other reasons to wait ... maybe robots will emerge for cleaning ... e.g.

https://twitter.com/Soonfeed/status/1054285022075719680 ... and robots which WUaS students can design even in Lego for learning purposes and in a realistic virtual earth (but Toyota and Sony and Walmart too for ex.) ...  and furniture at Ikea even will change a bit in response to robotic cleaners ... (In conjunction with Stanford how to become a network excellent manufacturers on par with Toyota for robots ... and a bit re Walmart, for ex. which I think networks manufacturers?:)

...

Holding a WUaS Hangout on Air soon at 10 am ...

World Univ & Sch: Actual-Virtual Lego Robotics & Twin Studies in a Realistic Virtual Earth

https://youtu.be/RJGEeU0Eo5c
https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch ... may head to Stanford for 3 talks ... SCD music-making this evening and Chris and Catherine may come .... poetry book ahead today as well ... and giving a talk at UC Berkeley  this Friday partly on robotics as well as Harbin ... http://tourismstudies.org/news_archive/SMacLeod2018.htm ...

Have fun at your last courses this week.

Hi M,

WUaS Monthly Business Meeting last Saturday ... and may have met a coding team out of the Stanford Graduate School of Education for WUaS yesterday ... a ginormous development ... Am amazed to have seen in a Scratch drag and drop programming language webinar recently that Scratch 3.0 is planning for TRANSLATION, and working with Lego Mindstorms EV3 and Lego WeDo 2.0 ROBOTICS beginning in January ... cool re WUaS's home robotics with programming especially ...

Wow - Translate, Lego Mindstorms EV3, WeDo 2.0 extensions will be part of Scratch 3 releasing on January 2, 2019 #Scratch3Webinar #RealisticVirtualEarthForLego - #RealisticVirtualEarthForRobotics - #RealisticVirtualEarth https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects  /Programming /Languages /Robotics

Hi M,

Smokey at Stanford too ... big couple of burns in the SF Bay Area, I'd guess ...

front room's floor is clean :) ... so I'll unpack my sofa bed this evening probably :) ... nice to have a clean front room ... am interested in advancing a house-cleaning robot (out of something like Toyota research, for ex.) for everything (like filing papers, etc. and clean high places ... outside 2nd story windows) ... including equality questions especially ... (but concerned that robotics will put a lot of people out of work as well ... one of the main arguments for planning for an Universal Basic Income ... ) Ethics can get quite convoluted as information technologies develop  ... :)

At this small talk in a different building than usual, I mentioned possible robotics' schools - and on-the-ground eventually, that even could become factories - in and around nuclear disasters, including in Ukraine and in Japan as well, - and in my today's blog post too ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/11/flying-fish-robotics-schools-check-out.html ... which is long so, if interested,  you might have to search for it. At this talk, I also mentioned the Quaker friends I lived with in Munich in 1981-82, the Kruegers, and Eckhart, a physicist, who with a group of concerned German scientists after the Chernobyl accident occurred  in 1986, together purchased a very expensive piece of equipment, and measured the fallout in Bavaria - AND PUBLISHED A SCIENTIFIC PAPER ABOUT THIS - (but I didn't mention that Eckhart was likely 'BLACKLISTED' for doing this (an act of scientific conscience), and I also didn't mention to the speaker, Nelson et al., that Eckhart lost his job as a physicist at the Max Planck Institute in Garching, near Munich - where I lived with Eckhart, Liesl, and their sons Roland and Arne for ~2.5 months, after spending the previous 10.5 months in Studentenstadt in Muenchen - and that, jobless, he had to start an energy consulting firm as a consequence). I talked with Eckhard a number of times after Fukushima nuclear disaster occurred in 2011 (amazingly! - and it was so great to talk again), - and I also didn't mention Dad's experiences (Gordon K. MacLeod MD) with Three Mile Island nuclear accident in this talk, but did mention them in another TSWG talk by a Japanese researcher talking about the Fukushima nuclear disaster nearly a year ago, I think.

Katherine -

What role did possibly being a hippy play in your time in Romania with regard to your book, and especially inter-culturally in a sense?

But such questions grow more involved with hippies, and hippy thinking, and my actual/virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and even robotics' schools that WUaS seeks to create in each of all ~200 countries, first online, but then on the ground ... and for countries' to be able to begin to innovate, create and develop robots that will help their economies, and improve their lives (am thinking poorer countries' here too).

I have a bit of an ongoing concern with what I whistle-blew about last year …

Thanks, M,

Hoping to facilitate good psychotherapists online, M, as part of the WUaS's planned online medical schools even - and in all ~200 countries' official languages - and potentially eventually even with robot psychotherapists ... and, for example, with regard to cultural differences re online Medicine, psychotherapy, MD psycho-analysis and psychiatry ...

But wait, M, a big root from the gigantic old elm 15 feet away from the corner of the house that leaks has to be cut some ... #RealisticVirtualEarth will be able to calculate how much to cut to keep the tree sturdy in storms, and to allow for Kuboti the Tractor-Robot-Foundation-Specialist to seal the foundation too! :)
