"Who owns your child’s school? The rise and rise of edu-business" ... http://www.opendemocracy.net/5050/melissa-benn/who-owns-your-child%E2%80%99s-school-rise-and-rise-of-edu-business ... World Univ & Sch is wiki, open, free, with free, Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and MD degrees planned, and with a f/Friendly/Quaker Business Meeting, loosely, as its form of decision-making, (and therefore ownership), which is open. (WUaS is a 501 c 3 educational charity). The next, hour-long Business Meeting is on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 9am ... Here's last Business Meetings' agenda ... http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2012/03/world-university-and-school-open.html ... and you'll find the next agenda at this WUaS blog, as well. All are welcome.
And MIT OCW, which WUaS will accredit on, is subject to their Creative Commons License, as is WUaS.
JL: Wow, is this behind the times or what? The book companies got "Busted" 40years ago for their monopolies. The hubby of the senator from CA got "Busted" for the government funds he used to buy his company's holding of a huge % (I heard 85%) of the private colleges in the western accreditation zone several years ago. Pepsi got Busted, a decade or two back. I am tired of everyone offering blame, but noone giving suggested feasible, corrective action.
SM: Interesting ... I think the article is British, and the friend who shared it is a Cambridge Ph.D. now at Stanford ... not sure ... but for profit universities in Turkey, per a talk she gave at Stanford, about 9 months ago, are a curious phenomena ... $10,000 per student I think is what they may budget for and get for one campus, in this instance, from the Turkish government.
JL: Cool. I have heard a lot about the "Failed" system in Britain. However, from what I could see it had become an economic "catch all" for service sector £'s by guising every activity as an "educational experience to easily qualify for government funding. However, that didn't work out when the economy tanked. I don't see anything about Turkey...but I know folks who live there who would not have education without a fairly rigid religious background...just the one's I know though.
SM: Like :)
