"Ethnography and Virtual Worlds: A Handbook of Method", Tom Boellstorff's et al. new book, Making of virtual worlds as ethnography?
Tom Boellstorff:
The cover isn't quite finished, but what a nice bday present--my new book (with my 3 great coauthors) has its website!
"Ethnography and Virtual Worlds: A Handbook of Method"
Tom Boellstorff, Bonnie Nardi, Celia Pearce & T. L. Taylor
With a foreword by George E. Marcus

Scott MacLeod:
Congratulations, Tom et al!!! ... Will it address building virtual worlds for ethnographic comparison (and a way, for example, to build a virtual Harbin without budget so far)?
Tom Boellstorff:
We talk about why that's not ethnographic research in our view--you'll see soon! And hopefully it will be an interesting read for you...
MF:
Tom -I am very much looking forward to reading your book.
looks like a great book to teach with!
KS:
Ohhhhh can't wait to read it!!! Congratulations!!
Scott MacLeod:
Happy birthday, by the way :)
Scott MacLeod:
Does this new book then contrast with your views/interpretation in your Coming of Age in SL (CoAiSL), since SL is built, as I would argue are most people's communities/places, which anthropologists then proceed to interpret, and even as kinds of palimpsests?
Scott MacLeod:
Looking forward to it, Tom ... Participant observation and interpretation (Cerwonka and Malkki) are sensible trajectories in ethnographic research/representation (and have long histories), easily extensible into virtual worlds ... with an emphasis not only on Techne (Boellstorff 2008), and by extension technology, but also on information (MacLeod 2014?). ... I think the making of field sites in virtual worlds will add significantly to anthropology, for example, via something like 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, as well as my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography (MacLeod 2014?) ... Congratulations - looking forward to engaging your forthcoming book in the 2nd half, 6 chapters, of my Harbin book !!!
See, too, Ethnography and Virtual Worlds' wiki subjects at WUaS, to which I'll add the above title:
