Tonga: AFSC and Tonga World University and School connections ... in the Quad before the Stanford opening convocation this afternoon at 4

September 4, 2017

Hello Taiana (and Kerri),

Very nice to meet you at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunday, and thanks for your Tongan choir's singing in Tongan, which I enjoyed a lot. Glad we exchanged email addresses afterward as well.

I'm writing to follow up in email, and also to introduce you and Kerri (see below about Kerri at the American Friends' Service Committee, and also about the World University and School's hive meeting space at the AFSC - SF) to one another. Kerri speaks Tongan!

Perhaps we can explore collaboration with time about a virtual choir, Taiana - as we also explore developing an online school and even potentially a CC MIT OpenCourseWare-centric university all in Tongan, and eventually for free CC OCW university and high school degrees, if helpful.

Such a Tongan choir in Tongan would emerge in conjunction with Wikipedia in Tongan - https://to.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lea_faka-Tonga - !

Since Wikipedia is in Tongan, this NEW wiki World University and School !! - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University - will soon be in Tongan too :)

In addition to eventually inviting the Tongan community to feel free to wiki-edit / teach to Tongan wiki World University and School, let's explore further online Tongan gatherings in Tongan in, for example, Google group video Hangouts - including eventually for singing in Tongan (as group video moves toward real, real time).

Greetings to James Harrow (sp?) and your fellow Tongan singers.

Nice to meet you.

Musical regards,
Scott

Hi Kerri,

Greetings from the SF Bay Area. I'm a member of SF Friends' Meeting and hold a World University and School hive meeting space in the AFSC space above the SF Quaker Meeting twice a week. In developing Friendly-informed WUaS, I just noticed you speak Tongan (and Tetum) - http://globalphiladelphia.org/people/kerri-kennedy . I'm just beginning to sing in the Burlingame Episcopal Church choir, and this past Sunday, Bay Area Tongans came and conducted and sang part of the service. I'd like to introduce you to Taiana Faavae soon in email, a Tongan and secretary of a Tongan group here, whom I met on Sunday! Do
you happen to know her already?

It turns out that Wikipedia is already in Tongan, and because WUaS donated WUaS to Wikidata in 2015, and we have a brand new wiki - http://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org - WUaS will soon likely develop in Tongan too. Exploring creating an online Tongan choir in
Tongan might be a first fun and creative project. Might you be up possibly please for helping with this?

Friendly regards,
Scott

Dear Scott and Taiana,
Thanks for connecting. I was on leave in August and am digging out of my inbox.  Nice to meet you both.

Tainana,  malo e lelei! Fefe hake?  I lived in Niuatoputapu with the Peace Corps 20 years ago and love Tonga.

This initiative is outside of the purview of my work at AFSC but happy to talk about it sometime and see how I can help.

Thanks! Kerri

Hi Kerri and Taiana,

Thanks so much for your email, Kerri. It's great to be in communication here, Taiana and Kerri. Nice to learn in Wikipedia that Tonga in the west was called the Friendly islands - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonga - too. Great that you work at the American Friends' Service Committee in these regards - and that you speak Tongan, Kerri!

Let's stay in touch as Tonga World University and School (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States) develops further in Tongan (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages), as well as online virtual choirs develop - with one planned for real, real time singing in Tongan! I just wiki-added [[Tonga]] and [[Tonga language]] but these first pages aren't begun yet.

Kerri and Taiana, if you were to start wiki subject pages (open schools) in Tongan for Tongans about what something you love, or something good for Tongans to teach and learn (e.g. language generation? ... law degrees?), what might those subjects be? WUaS is an open wiki (and also planning online university and high school in states' official languages).

Greetings to James Harrow (sp?) and your fellow Tongan singers, Taiana.

And nice to meet you both.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi M,

How are you?

Am here now in the Quad before the Stanford opening convocation this afternoon at 4 ... https://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/events/127th-opening-convocation-ceremony and http://events.stanford.edu/events/709/70911/ ... and will get out the minutes from WUaS business meeting from a few Saturday's ago soon.

And here's MIT's Commencement address last June - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NXjUpo-1q8 - with Apple's Tim Cook (since WUaS is both MIT OCW- and Stanford-centric).

For all of Silicon Valley around here,  I have a very big startup two-wing World University and School planned in all 7099 living languages with CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Wikipedia in 295 languages - which hasn't really taken off yet.

Bringing together my book of poetry, preparing to teach my online course next Tuesday, with a couple of early morning Stanford meetings in the next couple of days.

Time to go back to car and get a little more warmth for the shade, and maybe even a blue blazer and shoes.

What are you up to today?

L,
Scott

Hi M,

... and 200 major CC OCW online universities for free Bach, PhD, law, MD and IB degrees in countries' official languages ...

Back in Stanford Quad in shade now with blue blazer, an under fleece jacket, and will probably be glad in 30 minutes for warmth, and Birkenstocks, since shoes I might have worn aren't in car ... people are in shorts, t-shirts too

Standing right in front of Memorial Church ... leaning up againat a column ...

Processional walks in ... nice brass band beforehand ...

L,
Scott

... Ritual's over ... well-spoken ... informs Stanford ethos for another year, 127th begins anew ... will post video here if it becomes available ...

5 am morning for Stanford Medicine Grand Rounds soon in the morning ...

But traffic will keep me here at Stanford for a bit longer this afternoon ...

Scott
