Hi M,
Nice to talk last night. (And happy birthday, Dad - 1/30/29-1/25/07!). How are you, M?
Re the timely power outage (which have gotten fewer in recent years), as I mentioned, I could even take a shower after the power went out, since there's now a fairly newly second passive solar water storage heat tank, ... and there was enough warm water in both these tanks ... (even though both may
be heated by electricity, at least the passive solar storage tank is, and it being morning, the solar panel on roof probably couldn't do much water heating over night).
There's much Dutch Yoga influence in my life ... both Victor, and Dona Holleman, who self-published the complementary books "Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student" and "Asana in Photo," (see: http://scottmacleod.com/daltonbiblio.htm in http://scottmacleod.com/daltonletter.htm from http://scottmacleod.com/links.htm and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Yoga and http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/07/bird-of-paradise-yoga-benefits-without.html) the practice of which - these books allow independent readers/practitioners to be free of Yoga cultures/communities/teachers in a sense (which I appreciate) - allowed me to go through the Iyengar Yoga Institute of SF in one year instead of two, and thus also to get a certificate unusually fast (in around 1992), because I had a strong Yoga asana practice. Dona is of Dutch background, grew up in Asia - in the Dutch East Indies and in Thailand - (in concentration/refugee camps of one kind or another), and has lived much of her adult yoga life in northern Italy. She studied with Iyengar very early in his and her Yoga careers, and has one of the strongest Yoga practices around, besides Geeta Iyengar, Iyengar's daughter, who still teaches in Pune, India, at the Iyengar Yoga Center there. I took a course with Dona in Seattle in the mid-1980s, and was impressed with her inner stillness, and her clear and well thought-out teaching. I then went and studied Yoga with her in Italy (in the early '90s I think). Both Victor van Kooten (http://angela-victor.com/) and Dona Holleman (http://www.centeredyogadonaholleman.org/en/yoga-centered/) are Dutch, and I've learned Yoga from them in interesting and salutary ways.
Back to doing a few standing poses on Mondays and Thursdays somewhat regularly ... and esp. re my left longer leg, tweaked-sciatica-nerve-condition now basically past (left hip and joint issues), but longer left leg still noticeable in a new way, and body is getting a bit stiffer. Standing poses are probably as good as it gets as a kind of therapy for this. :)
Dad, in his open-mindedness, was also quite open to my choosing Yoga as a career, as I recall. And he seemed to benefit from doing a little Yoga from 2004-2007 even in his impaired condition (after his head injury in Belize). Happy birthday, Dad (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_K._MacLeod)!
And very nice to talk, M!
Much l, Scott

Since I'm still a bit of a Yoga teacher (even as I seek a partner / wife / friend / girl friend / mom-to-be), and ...
Re Yoga ethics and Hindu ethics too, I tend toward the hippy and these - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - but am cognizant that Hindu and related ethics steer away from the "sex industry" somehow culturally, and possibly over centuries/millennia even - and while I may be wrong about thus - the 'industrial' idea is fairly new to India, so who knows ? And India is pretty different from the West, due to the influence of religions in general, leading me to think I could make this "argument," somewhat coherently.
Ethics are a curious thing in this internet world, the information age, now coming into conversation with artificial intelligence and machine learning, and in all 7,097 living languages potentially ... and possibly re "identity" questions too (am influenced a bit by Quaker, Unitarian Universalist, hippy and Yoga ethics in these regards:) ... re above ... and caring ...
What are you up to today? And what are you up to this weekend?
Love,
Scott

Hi Ma,
Could a son or daughter of mine become a MD at the univ of Edinburgh or Glasgow and then Board certified to practice in the US, and then a Medicine Prof at Stanford? :) ... interesting goals re George's thinking and possible goals for his kids, should they have been interested in becoming MDs too. Yale or Pitt or CMU for undergrad in biology? (Psychotherapy with some specific goals in teen years?)
Whom to marry? Someone I haven't met yet? A 28 yr old medical resident?
Would like to navigate in conversation with my kids all these cultures well too Scotland, Pittsburgh, Palo Alto, Asia, Africa, Australia, for ex. are all very different cultures as discourse with many different languages.
Just some musings :)
Thinking a bit further about DAD in all these regards, post his birthday ...
What are you up to this weekend?

Scott

Hi M,
Studying biology at a Haverford, Swarthmore, Earlham or other Quaker school for my kids as undergraduates could have merit as well ... re a possible path to becoming a medical doctor. Might help to marry a MD for a lot of knowledge about this process from the inside, which I don't have (and re George A as well, since he was a MD ... like father like sons, was a linguistic idea which probably crossed his mind as well ) ... further musings ...
Appreciating Quaker centering in the world (and non-theistic f/Friendly-wise as well) in these regards ...

Hi M,
How are you and how is your weekend going? Did you by chance sign up for the excellent 'The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project' emails - re its focus on news and your interest in TV news (http://www.pewinternet.org/)? I think this would complement your conversation with the news in general.
Here too are some ideas for osteoporosis, which I got from the Harvard report below, but first some Harvard Yoga thinking https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/yoga-another-way-to-prevent-osteoporosis -
And here first is Andy Weil - https://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/body-mind-spirit/bone-joint/bones-no-more-calcium-vitamin-d/ - with helpful related thinking as well.
Why too little body fat may make you more likely to get osteoporosis
Why moving more could decrease your risk of a debilitating spine or hip fracture by as much as 50%
18 common medications that lead to bone loss
Why your body needs to pull more and more calcium from bones as you age
2 ways exercise protects your bones and fights osteoporosis
The vitamin that blocks substances that break down your bone
And more.
Just blogged re this email thread - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/padma-nelumbo-nucifera-dutch-yoga.html ... Am still circulating re seeking a partner ... (a MD?, someone I haven't met? ) ...
Hope your day is going great. It's a rainy day here ... making headway with blog and World Univ & Sch ...

More about ETHICS in this post:
January 15, 2019
Good afternoon, M,
Ongoing thinking happening here. Hope you're having a good week. How are you?
Ordered some clothes from Lands' End, first time in a while. Wondering too about somehow professionalizing World Univ & Sch re its platform, and beginning to hire graduate students (to teach to MIT OCW faculty in video in 'sections') ...
Hippy professional, post Stanford, MIT and Google would be one potential direction re this vision. Searched on recently what the hippest or coolest companies are these days, and the words 'BEST
companies' came up ... perhaps since cool companies think of their employees, the environment etc . But hippies in the 60s and 70s are old, ie these freedom-seeking movements happened a long time ago (when I was just a kid) ... and the future is ahead, ... so maybe an India CEO at WUaS eventually, .... since I sometimes think of India and Indians as Ur-hippies culturally ... maybe I'll begin to wear nicer professional but India-informed clothes.
Wondering too about what kind of world I want to live in, communities-wise too, and create as well - old questions for me (out of Reed and re Alpha farm, both in Oregon), but re realism as well. Appreciating Dad's creative thinking here, that we can create or shape the world we want (and he modeled an engagement of this for me), via a kind of activism (and he was a maverick, born in 1929, but a father to me living through the '60s and 70s) good high-achieving modeling (as a MD and Professor who took on the establishment and the powers that be, successfully in some ways - and Professionally, and sought to change things for the better) . And I have a social conscience, (in a QuAker way too) - Dad did too, but in different ways (and not everyone does, - au contraire, in fact) - re seeking to shape and realize a better world, and re peace and social justice.
Yoga philosophy includes the idea of self-study (positing concepts too of the divine in these regards culturally), and Lacanian psychoanalysis is also about self study - with a focus on language (as well as realism), and I bring these together here in my Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations ... http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html.
Community, social groups, - and for me? ... troop bonding, pair bonding (2 of 5 of John Money's exigencies - http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm), - I think Pgh affords different social roles for me than the SF Bay. Partner-seeking continues here for me to begin a family too.
Web too offers new kinds of sociality. Had a WUaS Hangout yesterday with Romanian friend Nicolai who waS in Romania, here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/01/cheile-turzii-world-univ-sch-coding-new.html - which is a brand new form of sociality. And I appreciate too my independence, individuality and freedom.
That this Hangout and much on the Web are recorded re new sociality makes me glad I'm a good person, and that I'm creating something great and good in World Univ & Sch as well.
How to generate a great social ethos online - community - post-Cuttyhunk in 70s /80s, post Reed (including living in collective houses in first half of '80s - which were communes in a sense, but not
French), post Quaker-informed Earlham, Haverford, Swarthmore, Pendle Hill - in modernity and now internetity (a term I coined in a UC Berkeley paper I wrote in 2000) - post Stanford, Harvard, Yale,
Oxbridge's connectedness (those that visionary, studying, and knowledgeable, and re '60s and '70s there too)? And in each countries' main languages, and online (e.g. in a realistic virtual earth with
avatar bots for new kinds of sociality - re peoples' current engagement with TV figures, cartoon characters and animations on the internet, etc? Ethics, goodness and excellence academically
(smarts-wise) are key to this community generation online in my thinking ... and how will this ethos ripple to the ground around individuals (learners and students) where they live, I wonder? (Stanford students with all their international diversity and with its goodness, and legality, - the ethics it engages - may be a good Harbinger of this).
Seeking to increase good sociality in my life re connecting with a partner and growing a circle of good friends ... not clear how to connect with an attractive partner to begin a family of 2 or 3 kids,
but checking into Harbin Hot Springs after beginning a family has merit and re a kind of what I'll call a California hippy-informed kind of 'India' there too, culturally. But a realistic virtual Harbin
especially for community generation has much merit too (and re a realism about Harbin's 'negative vortex' - which is Heartsong's phrase).
California - as community, as commune re laws too, and as successful economy - is an interesting real example to grow from as well. But it's not the community of early 20 year olds living in a collective house, and thinking about how 'community' could grow.
Self-study, psychoanalysis, consciousness of personhood with therapeutic orientation, thinking about one's bodymind analytically, and pairbond- and troopbond- dynamically (re psychodynamically) ...
yes .. (and eventually with avatar bot interlocutors, conversational agents to guide such self-study, such self understanding?). Writing to you, Ma, re thinking and self-study here, and via email ...
Curious how I'll connect with a partner re our self-study conversation in raising a family of 3 ... so would each in their teens head to a psychotherapist re their own self-study as individuals becoming
adults? (Thinking G.A. here and his kids ... good to have a culture which supports such self-study ... ie cultures of professional psychotherapy - but not re Yoga's interpretation of this Svādhyāya
(literally meaning 'one's own reading' according to Wikipedia). A society too where one could find Yale trained, for ex. - so really smart - MD young adult psychiatrists - psychiatrists - where George
was Yale-trained, and a Lacanian MD psychoanalyst (maybe as a dissent from the mainstream orthodoxy, and because it offered him better approaches to work with analysands as a psychoanalyst in Pgh), whose kids as teens all saw psychotherapists. As a kind of preventive medicine? But which could become much less expensive with avatar bot MD psychiatrists - and for self-study.
Interesting ~ The right understanding communication between people - an exchange of information technology in a sense - can be transformative and so beneficial to people's well-being. (May have
heard this in your voice even in our conversation the other evening (a kind of ease, understanding and caring), making me wonder who you had talked with and what the conversation was (re beneficial I.T. exchange for human beings / between bodyminds / between friends who understand).
Agency as in free-action, (in society - where I take a Castilian approach too, to the idea of "the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community") and the Desiderata -
http://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html ...
I think I'd be interested in a wonderful MD resident or similar, ... and also living a potentially more 'civil' life in Pittsburgh than 'free' California for raising a family ahead? Would be easier to inform 'goodness' in my circles there than here - including good / great thinking. Would like too to develop the excellence in thinking and ethos of Stanford but newly online at World Univ (in multiple languages too) ... and yet in new ways too eg with multiple channels of communication (i.e. at least 3 in group video - voice, text, gesture). Would like to get started soon ... thanks to a great connection with a new friend.
And if we all live beyond our 120s ? ... would like to have had kids ...
This email has turned out longer than I thought ... woke up a bit before 6 ... and basically just kept writing until around 8 or a little after.
Time to see (came out) / sit in half lotus and meditate ...
L,
Scott

Thanks for your email, M,
Just turned off the free live stream on internet (slightly stilted too) of the Super Bowl which seemed
like it was MUCH more advertising than football playing.
Waiting for real real time internet for online music making ... and sports could make this happen even ... or professional classical music :)
Found a good Bobby Burns' celebration photo at the San Jose, CA, Scottish Country Dance taken by Charlotte Greig of me piping from the side with my Scottish small pipes without drones' visible, with Alan Thwigg and Jeff Lanam the two sword bearers, and with Jamie Tanner MC, and his wife Star Steward ... will share from another email address. :)
Just took a walk up to a high ridge overlooking the long unspoilt valley to the east of my house-let - gorgeous wind-swept blustery day with amazing views. Nice to get out. Took another walk on Skyline Blvd yesterday evening, to get out for a bit too (then to cafe), and which took me high up onto a little ridge top trail near the main Skyline road with no one around, in Birkenstocks (with R
lift), raincoat and in light rain ... very enlivening and with amazing views to both SF, the GG
Bridge, the Bay Bridge westward, and views to undeveloped eastward too. Still can't locate exactly where I might live a view ridges over from this road near where I stopped but keep siting landmarks -- one day :)
Yoga continues to be salutary daily in the morning. Missing Angela and Victor's Yoga courses in Greece, and Yoga in the Harbin warm pool as well ... perhaps anon ...
Enjoy the Sunday Times this week ... and more music :)

Hi Janie / Ma,
I'm attaching the Bobby Burns' celebration piping photo I mentioned, which doesn't appear to have drones - how interesting . :)

More re Ethics:
Sitting (meditating ~ relaxation response i.e. 'biological'), then doing/practicing standing poses were good this morning ... Tree pose and Eagle pose, where I stand on one foot then the other, are good for my different leg lengths as are all the standing poses.
Are you playing / singing in a musical group this week?
Explored further "evolutionary biology ethics" to complement Quaker, UU, Hippy, and Yoga ethics' here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/padma-nelumbo-nucifera-dutch-yoga.html - and was glad some Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy articles came up :)
