Keoladeo National Park, India: 'How can I keep from singing,' Discourse, 'teaching songs for children learning to sing,'

The beautiful song 'How can I keep from singing' - emerges from a milieu, context, culture, discourse, language - and expresses an impulse to share beautifully, in sound ... (As an anthropologist), how might we generate a culture (like Friends have generated a discourse over 350 years) where we want to sing love, literally and soundly, in many ways? The Music ..... The Music School at WUaS http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School & with Google + Circles?

and develop a very enjoyable practice of singing a song daily ... from Rise Up Singing, for example :)

Pick a song from Rise Up Singing, daily, listen to Youtube if you don't know it, and sing away? :)

*

Can you suggest a source, or specific songs, for 'teaching songs for children learning to sing,' like the song "1-3-5-8-7-6-5-4-3-5-2-3-4-sharp-5 and the 8 is the same as the 1, but an octave apart ..." ? :) ... for example, for learning the relations between notes, or how to sing harmony - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Singing_Harmony ? Thank you!

How best to get vocal, and harmonize with, about it? As a budding, great university ...

Kaziranga National Park, India: Developing WUaS on principle, New GENOMICS subject, Graphic Design, great universities for open course ware at WUaS

I'm developing World University & School -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com -

on principle - from conscience (a kind of conscientious objection), in f/Friendly senses - because free, open, highest quality education, in 3000-8000, languages will benefit SO many people. Why don't we have free university education in the U.S., when K-12 is free? An open, fun conversation about ideas (MIT OCW/Wikipedia etc.) can emerge into a kind of flourishing.

*

In what ways could visiting World University & School, for example, its Media Lab - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Media_Lab_at_World_University_and_School - but any of it, become as fantastical as visiting India, if attuned to India's 'connectedness, culturally'? :) Let's make WUaS fantastic through making things freely online :)

it's worth checking on the MIT Media Lab online itself - http://labcast.media.mit.edu/ - just glance through the videos :)

Surtsey, Iceland: Atheists, Quakers, Nontheistic Friendly kids' camp, Quaker kids, including nontheists, at free World Univ & Sch in 2014?

Hi nontheist Friends,

This Washington Post article on an atheist camp for kids

does look interesting ...

How about a nontheistic Friendly kids' camp, and then school, after some years?

Online?

I have Quaker kids / Friends' children, including nontheistic, in mind for the first (beginning in 2014), matriculating, free, online Bachelors' degree classes for World University and School (which is like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware), which I mention, for example in this blog entry:

http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2011/07/aldabra-atoll-seychelles-carbon-markets.html (July 28, 2011).

Please spread the word -

tuition-free and free-free are compelling -

especially with MIT Open Course Ware as a basis (32 15 week-long courses for a degree), and emphasizing the conference method (like Reed College with MIT).

I'd like World University and School, itself, to be informed by (nontheistically) Friendly process (organizationally and business meeting-wise), and it's pretty nontheist with its knowledge focus ...

Maybe WUaS can orchestrate a free, in-virtual-worlds, and on the web, nontheist kids' camp.

With friendly greetings,
Scott

Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, Hungary: The opportunity to engage the conference method, Conversations about Ideas

The opportunity to engage the conference method

perhaps with MIT OCW or Reed College, faculty or students, and live, in every subject, perhaps by hopping into a virtual world will be invaluable.

Much more than the study group idea, it emerges from ancient Greece, as philosophical discourse, for generating new knowledge, and pursuing knowledge in depth.

World University and School's SUBJECT TEMPLATE -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE -

for every subject
(http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects)

makes this possible, and one can come into conversation with the core MIT OCW courses themselves, by sharing references, or teaching to your web camera, or generating a live conversation about serious ideas.

Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles: Carbon Markets, Global Warming and Climate Change, Quaker Kids as first WUaS students in 2014?, Gould playing Bach

Good news: Carbon markets in US and Europe are 'there,' it seems, which is great as a mechanism for managing global warming -

- will look to add to 'Ocean and Climate Change Management Plan' wiki Subject http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects at WUaS.

CL: Need carbon taxes too.

JS: The easiest way to send less carbon into the air is to not demand so many consumer products and electricity. Use less, much less. Not many people in the USA seem serious about using less.

Scott:

agreed ... financial mechanisms for environmental challenges arise in quirky ways ... I suppose this is a kind of carbon tax. And small is beautiful, and voluntary simplicity, both have great merit, perhaps in conjunction with technological innovation and education (eg http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Energy_Technologies

plus http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects)

and now how to develop the WUaS's Ocean and Climate Change Plan - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ocean_%26_Climate_Management_Plan - with much more sophistication?

Who will matriculate in the first class at World Univ & Sch for a free Bachelor's degree (32 15 week courses) in 2014, interactively online and from home/cafe, engaging MIT OCW with the conference method? A Friend in Africa asks, 'How does one learn at this university (WUaS)?' ... Kamchatka Volcanoes, Siberia: Researcher interested in evolution and cancer, Medical School, WUaS Conversation around Table as learning, Google Plus?

Danube Delta, Romania: A startup University, A timely overview of WUaS, Friendly business-wise and organizationally, Harbin warm pool bubbly

Hi, F and D,

Thanks for your engaging and topical thoughts and questions. It was nice to talk with you at Meeting.

World University and School is a startup university, with the first, potential, matriculating Bachelor class of around 100 students in 2014, matriculating Ph.D. class in 2015, law in 2016 and M.D. in 2017. Here's a recent letter to the Chronicle of Higher Education, in my blog, which offers a timely overview of WUaS: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2011/07/machu-pichu-letter-to-chronicle-of.html - July 14, 2011. At the same time, it's a free, open, people-to-people teaching wiki, both as meta-directory, and creative opportunity for people to figure out what and how they'd like to teach to the web.

As a startup university with very little money, thus far, but a clear mission and huge vision (a school in all languages, with 50-100 degree granting universities), I would like to move toward a Stanford University pay scale (e.g. and related excellence, student body of overachievers, etc.), in the long run. In terms of teaching, in 2014, WUaS is looking for opportunities, for example, to engage MIT OCW (with its <2000, free, online courses) - or possibly Reed College - to stream some, or all, of their courses live to the web, with significant interactivity (in Google Plus Hangouts?). WUaS could conceivably pay them, or MIT OCW might extend its public mission still further by making live these faculty members available via web cameras in classrooms, and WUaS might hire graduate student instructors to do the WUaS grading, as WUaS moves through the accreditation process. But this would beg a Reed College-like focus on undergraduate teaching, which I'd like to cultivate in this dream, World University and School, as we talked about at Quaker Meeting.

I post a lot about WUaS to my blog - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/global%20university ...

A friend is coming ... must go ... heading into Harbin ...

Let's keep in touch.

All the best,
Scott

Hi R,

WUaS got 501 c 3 status earlier this year - a biggie for us!

In silence, I explore something related with the relaxation response (see the 'Relaxation Response' label, here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/relaxation%20response , and the WUaS, wiki, Subject page, here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Relaxation_Response). The Harbin warm pool is silent these days, and I enjoy that silence, as well. As a straight man, the silence in the Harbin warm pool can seem inhibitory, especially vis-a-vis Harbin's clothing-optionalness, but adds, in my experience, to the relaxation response in it. What aspects of silence, in particular, bring you home?

I explore, too, nontheistic Friendly questions, as well, and in my blog, too. (There are 4 Quaker/nontheistically f/Friendly labels there - nontheist friends, nontheist Friend, Quaker and Quakers). A little evolutionary biologically- and anthropologically-oriented, as well, I see Friends/Quakers in those lights, too.

I just received a HUP letter turning down my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography book proposal. (Here are the first three chapters +: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Harbin%20ethnography). I'm going to send it to SUP next, I think. Would you be open to chatting a little with you about this endeavor, as well, and possibly glancing at the proposal? And might you have any contact with the SUP editorial department, by any chance?

I'm so glad WUaS received 501 (c) 3 status, as well ... I've been celebrating in the Harbin warm pool, a different kind of bubbly. Accreditation, a 3 stage process, is next. Now to help WUaS become a kind of warm pool of idea-sharing. :)

All the best,
Scott

How to make practicing fun, inspiring and regenerative?

For me it would be to make it

social,

enjoyable,

playful,

and inspiring.

How might the internet facilitate this?

Social?

a
Marsalis and Ma's first suggestion of seeking out private instruction would make it social.

Seeking until one finds a teacher who is a good fit makes sense.

(At Scottish Country Dancing recently, the teacher was very good, anticipating individual needs, making the movements clear, and keeping the energy positive, even when correcting).

Teachers can do so much.

b
A milieu, like an ensemble of musicians, which is supportive and rich in information can help.

Such a socioculture can offer and further goals, provide resources like music and ideas, and facilitate a rich musical conversation.

Enjoyable?

Slowing down youtube videos would be one way to learn music you enjoy.

And playing with a teacher or ensemble online could also work, increasing the number of possible musical conversants.

Playful?

Find playful, skillful teachers and ensembles, and join with gradually.

Inspiring?

Find inspiring, skillful teachers and ensembles, and join with gradually.

Machu Pichu: A letter to the Chronicle of Higher Education recently about World University and School, vis-a-vis University of the People

Here's a version of a letter I sent to the Chronicle of Higher Education recently about World University and School, vis-a-vis University of the People.

July 14, 2011

Dear Editor at Chronicle of Higher Education,
letters@chronicle.com

World University and School – A University and School for All, in all Languages, to offer free Bachelors, Law, M.D. and Ph.D. degrees; WUaS is like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware.

In the July 15th 2011 issue, Kevin Carey's article entitled “A College Education for All, Free and Online” (http://chronicle.com/article/A-College-Education-for-All/128162/), says that Reshef “won't be the last” to build a whole, free, online university. Indeed, that is the case. World University and School (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University), started in 2008, plans to offer tuition-free, as well as fee-free degrees, as central to its mission. Furthermore, World University and School plans to serve many more people than UotP, with a school in every language, as wiki.

As one wing, World University & School's free, degree-focus approach differs from UotP's two program (and presumably 2 degree-majors) approach, of Computer Science and Business Administration, in that WUaS seeks to accredit for Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. (medicine) degrees, using MIT Open Course Ware as a basis, and potentially in 50-100 languages, and with interactivity in virtual worlds and via multiple, video-conferencing windows, for a conference-method approach to teaching and learning (paralleling Reed College's undergraduate education, significantly, with similar, traditional, related, but expandable majors, drawing on MIT OCW). WUaS seeks its first, matriculating, Bachelor's class in 2014, its first Ph.D. class in 2015, its first class in law in 2016, and its first medical class in 2017, each with 100 students, to begin. Its first, matriculating, foreign-country, degree class for a Bachelor's degree-equivalent, accredited in that country, will begin around 2015. WUaS seeks overachieving students (such as might go to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Cambridge and Stanford, etc.), and also plans to offer these overachievers, and all interested learners, a developing set of learning possibilities, paralleling the internet, as it develops into the future.

But WUaS offers a lot more than UotP, as wiki.

WUaS is developing, as its other wing, a Wikipedia-like (now in around 281 languages) approach to open, wiki schools in all 3000-8000 languages, and in around 200 countries. In building out into cyberspace with wiki-schools for open teaching and learning resources, WUaS is creating a wiki-meta-directory with the following, main pages – Courses, Subjects, Languages, Nation states, You at World University, Research, Educational Software, Library Resources, Museums, and Hardware Resource Possibilities - and potentially in all languages (with an universal translator planned, building on Google Translate, etc.), simply by copying and translating the English version's sections. An open, wiki, 'Subjects' page, (indeed, all of WUaS's main pages), offers remarkable, creative potential for open teaching and learning worldwide, but especially for learning as ongoing conversation.

World University & School's mission (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation), in reaching out to the entire world, is to provide a free, wiki-based, education platform and, through facilitating the development of broadband worldwide, to make our service accessible to under served parts of the world. The WUaS mission is thus to facilitate all levels of teaching and learning opportunities (and future degrees) through an open, editable wiki in all languages, nation-states and subjects with great universities, and for One Laptop per Child countries and everyone.

World University and School incorporated in 2010 in California, and received U.S., federal, tax-exempt, 501 (c) 3 status in 2011. WUaS has begun to accredit through Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which also accredits Stanford and UC Berkeley, and which is a 3 stage process.

While UotP can be seen, in the sphere of California education, for example, to be targeting a community college and California State University student body worldwide, World University and School seeks to target overachieving students, with MIT OCW and the conference method, as its bases, interactively and generatively online, and with free, university, high-level degrees.

As a wiki, World University and School also facilitates ongoing innovation through people-to-people teaching and learning, inviting you to teach to your web camera, and add what you teach, or 'edit this page' at WUaS.

Sincerely,
Scott MacLeod

Bull Run Watershed: Beautiful Reed College is quiet this summer, Rainbow colored jump ropes in Reed's library, WUaS Board of Directors/Clerks

Beautiful Reed College
is quiet this summer.

There are rainbow colored
jump ropes in Reed's library,
for folks who have been sitting
too long - very sensible and very Reed-thoughtful.

Reedies at the cafe
at 41st and Woodstock
are reading a lot.

Book readers far outnumber
computer laptop surfers.

Meeting with Reed's president
Colin Diver this morning
to talk about
World University & School.

I've asked him for two years
if he would be on the WUaS
Board of Directors / Clerks.

Not yet, I have the sense.

Our talk was wide-ranging
and edifying.
I very much hope to
collaborate with Reed, over time.

Its focus on undergraduate teaching
is a particularly new insight
I'd like to bring to WUaS.

After departing from
dear C & P T's house
in lovely Portland,
with the fruit trees in the back yard,
and close to Reed,
I drove to Eugene,
for a brief visit & tea
with sweet M & D.
It's very nice to see baby A
and E, A & a visitor, A.

Drove south, heading home to
Canyon, on I5, and camped,
in my car, part way up the quiet
road to Stewart Mineral Springs,
which I had visited on the way north
around June 30th.

West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord: WUaS is a long river ahead (decades-long) w/ much singing & dancing among learning, Cambodia

World University & School -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com -

is a long river ahead (decades & centuries-long)

with much singing & dancing among learners & teachers aboard the knowledge crafts that are built.

It has two aspects:

1. an open Wikipedia-like teaching & learning one in ALL languages & countries,

2. a MIT-Reed College-like (for undergraduate conference method, academic focus for overachievers), online, interactive, accredited, free (Bachelors, Ph.D., Law, & M.D.) degrees, all of which will grow with & out of the WWWeb's infancy.

.. with an invitation to teach & learn at WUAS now, by editing a page.

World Univ & Sch is looking for overachieving, 18 year olds + students who love to read, write and do science and math, including programminb, for its first matriculating Bachelors' class in 2014 :)

(32 15 week long courses for a free degree) ...

*

In what ways can World Univ & Sch further turn learning at the college level (Bach degree) into 'music,' via the conference-method (talking around a table about ideas, seriously and to generate new ideas:) in academic disciplines vis-a-vis Reed College's Humanities, plus? http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Humanities - an outline for this method?

... multiple Skype or UStream windows for the conference method online ... how to find/create the professors / clerks / conductors to bring out everyone's voice in multiple academic subjects? (Is this teaching conference-style 'pedagogy'?)

KU:

Suppose I want to export your idea to Cambodia. Possible? How?

Scott:

Hi KU, I created two Cambodia-related wiki, WUaS pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Cambodia and http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Khmer . As you and others generate interest the Cambodian World University and School wiki could grow into a full, free, wiki, online university and school. Let's communicate further about this, but this is a beginning, with an invitation to add open, free teaching & learning resources about Khmer and Cambodia. All best, Scott

Ritter Hot Springs, eastern Oregon

Ritter Hot Springs

camped nearby - about a mile away - overnight

got there at around 8 in the morning ...

the Ritter swimming pool was closed for cleaning

using their telephone in front of the general store, I called the number and talked with a woman about other pools at Ritter

... walked across the swinging bridge which is downstream from the suspension bridge you see upon first arriving ...

and found the four little cement rooms painted blue up on the hill with warm water in them ... very eastern Oregon ... the cement would hold water ... steps into the pools ... blue paint under the water that was only partial ... not very comfortable ... wondered if these were around in 1902, per a photo I saw in the general store ...

Since there were so few people at Ritter ... I saw 3 people, 2 a couple who looked to be birding and 3 nice cars, each shaped like a Honda Odyssey, ... I went into the old, nonfunctioning, jacuzzi pool near the new-ish house near the 4 cement pool rooms ... on the opposite side of the creek and soaked ... The new-ish house looked like a comfortable rental with lots of wood inside and out ... Naked, the water in the jacuzzi was a comfortable temperature, and the rock formations and rugged, rocky, eastern Oregon landscape around were nice 'musical scores.'

Having asked the owner's wife about a shower on the phone, she had told me there was one, with the same water out of the ground as in the pools in what she called the 'cells,' on the Ritter's main area's side of the bridge, right next to the creek ... I took a welcome shower after the warm pool, got clean and headed toward Ted & Mary's near La Grande and Union, Oregon.

I took Forest Service road number 19, less than a mile from Ritter, which soon became dirt, back this time, and saw most amazing open, Eastern Oregon country. In looking for Ritter the evening before, I had seen Rd. # 19, also called Bone Point Road at the other end, and it was the much shorter way back. ... fun adventure into beauty ...

Drove back through Ukiah, OR, then to La Grande ... stopped and called Reed College president's Office, and was able to set up a meeting for Monday, called CT and T & M.

Such good news to meet with Reed's Colin Diver ... to ask if he would be on World University & School's Board of Directors / Clerks

... took a number of photos

Battle Mountain, Oregon, a monument near Pendleton

Battle Mountain, Oregon, a monument near Pendleton

Coincidentally, I came to this Oregon History monument
(http://web.oregon.com/history/hm/images/battlemountain.jpg),
when, on July 8, 1878, the Bannock War was fought, and Indians (Bannocks, Piutes and Snakes), lead by Egan, lost, to General Oliver Howard's troops, and Egan's scalp was delivered to his camp a few days later. They were fighting against white encroachment. It was the last significant battle/significant uprising of Native peoples in the Pacific NW. Egan, a Piute, was leading a wide sweep out of Idaho into the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon. After this, Egan's followers scattered.

I remember these Indians, in memoriam, and the tragic loss of their lands & lifestyle here.

O, all of us seem in such loss and tragedy seem like such common chimpanzees, where white folks had technologies that Indians didn't. How to learn peace vis-a-vis Bonobos, especially? Humans can learn, sometimes. A reading of our human primateness v-a-v violence and harming, might lead to different approaches to its mitigation, than heretofore explored in focusing on peacefulness & nonharming.

I left from The Dalles this morning after a good visit with my cousins.

This day is beautiful.

... called both Ritter Hot Springs both Lehman Hot Springs from Pendleton. Ritter said they were open from Saturday in the evening until Thursday and Lehman just cut off. I drove out and out into the very beautiful eastern Oregon hills, much open land with grasses and also with many little areas of forests. After backtracking a couple of times, comparing maps, I finally came to Ritter, which had an open sign in front. I'm camping nearby and will see in the morning if I can soak. This land around here is so lightly populated, and very beautiful. Flowers are in full bloom, and its warm. The land I drove through is similar to my Uncle & Aunt Ted & Mary Brown's land. I'm on my way to visit them tomorrow. ... Some happiness along the way, especially viewing the landscape, but relatively little bliss. I'm attuned to the socioculture of eastern Oregon, where among folks of settler stock, there's a tenaciousness / stubbornness, which can be hardness, as well as fairly traditional gender roles. I'm curious about how to 'Ferdinand the Bull' (peacefully navigate my way, even in beauty & possibly with bliss) my way through such environments, - there are many similarities of temperament to this around the world, but perhaps less so in India.

The Rainbow Gathering seems distant, although I only left the Gifford Pinchot National Forest yesterday in the morning.

Time to write a little more about that, here.

Carson Ridge Falls, Gifford Pinchot: Leaving the Rainbow Gathering

Leaving the Rainbow Gathering

Having already left the night before, I drove - unshowered & unshaved for nearly 4-6 days (except for 1 good solar camping shower, and 2 swims in this time) - out through the Gifford Pinchot forests toward Carson and Stevenson. My cousin A, who I was heading to visit in The Dalles, Oregon, across the Columbia River, called me almost as soon as I had phone reception. Nice to talk with her.

I stopped at the Skamania History Museum in Washington - with its 1922 Mac truck (which still runs), 1930 John Deere tractor, then crossed the Bridge of the Gods, and came to The Dalles.

Rainbow, internet, civilization

Lower Lewis Fall, Gifford Pinchot: Rainbow is quieter on July 6, 2011

Rainbow is quieter on July 6, 2011

It's an India festival, in the woods -
tribal - where the resources haven't been depleted, from the earth,
partly because it lasts a week,
and, in part, because this is America, with beautiful national parks.
Rainbows are earth conscious,
and the river, here, indeed, is cold, - from snow melt.

Rainbow changes energies
from, for some 'fuck you, society,
we want to be free' neurophysiology -
what is it about human primates' societies that generates this? -
(not so much in age-old India, though),
to engaging the rainbow tribe,
living in the forest,
partying deeply,
to 'we love you.'

(What are the pleasures of getting high on marijuana?
You access a different consciousness, that's often harmoniously & musically attuned, apart from some weirdnesses of society).

Made my way half way around the big, swampy meadow, with a friend, to Kids' village in the woods.
I hadn't seen this before, thinking Kids' camp was right on the meadow.
Instead, this was a nest in an old old forest, with old light glinting through.
There was a lot of Cameron's Avatar here.
People & kids connecting, and attuned.
Learn from Avatar, learn from Rainbow.
Music emerged over food, kids all around that was beautiful.
I sang, too - am finding my high and base voice ...
have been singing all day, seeking the music.
Often a guitar begins the music,
but sometimes it's a drum.
In kids' camp, today, it was guitars, playing familiar songs, oft, too, from the '60s.
People sing with and improvisation begins.
There are a lot of good guitar players here.
A hippie cellist brought out a painted, Rainbow cello, and made music with.
I left with my friend in the middle, but returned, a few times.
Sometimes I found more music.
At others @ found slightly disconnected people,
products of the modern world.
I get 'Avatar,' long haired, dread lock men, here, not as many as in the past I think, but still numerous,
live it.
This life in the forest continues,
begun, I heard yesterday eve,
in '72, at Table Mountain.
Colorado governor Love, at the time, tried to stop those hippies, with law enforcement.

This life goes on.

I can see the Rainbow Gathering as a massive act of civil disobedience, annually and cleverly successfully, although with less talk of Babylon 'in the air' than perhaps in previous gatherings, but not all such talk forgotten, by any means.

What would this all be like in the French language, for example?

In the evening dinner & om circle, I made some new friends from Wyoming, Samantha Lyle & her mother Julia(?). I later brought two hot springs' books for them to look at, and plan from, for their 20 hour return drive, - when I went back to my car to get my jacket, about 1.5 miles away from the main meadow. Americans, they had a fair amount of Finnish background, appearance-wise, and also intelligence-wise, I think. This was more pronounced when I met Samantha's older sister, Cala, with another acquaintance. Julie took some notes, and I hope Samantha & I will stay in touch.

After the free dinner, and as the dancing began, I talked with someone who had first come in the '70s and who had stood up in the Hipstery Granola Funk sharing the night before, to tell of his experiences back then. He now lives in Seattle, and wearing a big, trippy top hot, still thinks like a hippy, although he probably also functions fairly well in normative society. We shared a vibe ... He asked if I was a sociologist. I said I would call myself an anthropologist at times. I was glad to hear further some of his recollections.

When I went back to my car around 10, I decided to start driving out away from where I was parked about 1/2 from main gate, to avoid traffic. I drove nearly 30 miles, found a place to park, and camped by the side of the road.

Geranium robertianum: Rainbow is rebellious, like the 4th of July, against the powers that be, - so be hippies.

Rainbow is rebellious

Rainbow is rebellious,
like the 4th of July,
or the French Revolution,
against the powers that be, -
so be hippies.

Walking through Rainbow
on the 5th of July, I hear
"'He can't get along in normal society,' and I can't either ... "
'Normal society is so
messed up.'

'This forest is so nice,' someone else,
later, says, walking across
lodgepole bridge over a water way.
I see so many people in bare feet.
And after living outside for days,
people here start to darken a little,
as they merge with forest life.
And at this Rainbow, people
walk a lot, wandering & meandering,
up and down the forest paths,
from Warrior Camp, to the main meadow,
through the trading circle,
to Montana Mud, to Lovin' Ovens,
to Bread of Life, to Instant Soup,
to Bees on Earth.
The nicest camps are farthest
from the main Gate, but also entail
carrying stuff the farthest,
including the food to serve large
numbers of people.
No electricity or engines here,
at around 3200 feet elevation,
except for the solar panels on
G-Funk theatre, and one-bicycle-wheeled
platforms, that take two to move, ...
and this little wagon, that push cart,
and occasionally a bicycle in the woods.
All this walking makes people well,
and happens so naturally.

At G-Funk and main circle,
and the information hub,
ideas are shared.
And voices from the stage share ideas
of who we are, of Rainbow philosophy,
theatrics, song & dance ...
I hope some of these will be posted
as video
to the internet, - I'll add them here.

So, so many colorful clothes,
and so many young folks.
Rainbow family speaks to a vision:
disjunction from society, back to the woods, goes forward.
Everybody is going native,
so colorfully, in the woods.
At Instant Soup camp behind me,
I hear a Rainbow playing harmonium,
and singing Om na pa shivaya,
as I sit in the shade
by a creek, writing .

While I see Rainbow identity here,
as an anthropologist,
I also see native Americans
reclaiming living
in camps and villages,
close to the land,
for 7 days,
with no money exchanged
in these forests -
it sure makes bookkeeping easy,
and it's kinda radical.
Rainbow is about being
All Ways Free
as a peace & healing gathering in 2011.
And people are smiling here a lot.

I hear drums now, and see
a kind of music of life,
all around.
Come to Rainbow,
come home to this family.

Across from me,
over the swampy biggest meadow,
is Kids' Village,
with lots of tents,
and a way up to the back gate.

To the left is another village,
with eight teepees.
There's much tie die here,
and the large number of dogs
is amazing - dogs are happy here at
rainbow.

music under a nice tarp
with unique drums,
homemade - only kinda gamelan -
which we all make together.
I sing high, falsetto harmony,
with good drummers & a Thai stringed instrument.

We find space & bliss again & again -
in maybe 5 musical explorations -
and travel,
far in sound.

The Thai instrument player
speaks a few lines of
poetry of his truth ...
I've heard relatively little such poetry at Rainbow -
of '60s truth here,
but it percolates, sometimes
finding clarity.

It's the vibe here,
that I engage as watcher,
that's so connecting & intuitive.
Not growing my hair long,
talking pot these days, or ...
I have the pleasure of viewing.

This forest parade is
beautiful,
with people coming home.

A smell of pine brings me back
to hiking the Pacific Crest Trail again,
living outside, in 1980 & 1982,
exploring, very healthily,
high with the world,
finding new Wilderness, for me, -
it was first time ever in
summertime, rain-free,
back country California.

I watch the large trading circle
from behind 2 teepees.
Such a stream of people.
Many are already leaving,
yet I heard a young guy
in tie die, who could go
to an east coast prep school,
say he was staying until July 10,
long after the 7th - he said, too,
he had taken half a dose
of psychedelic mushrooms
this morning,
after eating more yesterday.
Someone else, earlier, spoke of
bicycling the longer way home,
along the Washington coast, -
and spending extra days in the forest,
after Rainbow has gone,
are all Rainbow philosophy,
which I know from the Pacific northwest.

Rainbow -
O, how to invite
World University & School in to
your peace, healing & sharing vision.
WUaS is wiki - so, sharing-centric -
and centers MIT OCW's open, free courses, as sharing.
Wikipedia is one big trading circle or
an open, free encyclopedia, now in 281 languages.
Shall we build from the virtual
Harbin Hot Springs, as early WUaS classroom,
and make some changing natural forest meadows?
... WUaS as virtual, forest classroom
and for Botany, as well?

The main meadow was a marsh.
The big big circle didn't happen this year due to a swamp.
Hippy thinking can be a little backward.
Yet site / place selection for weather, water & hippie diffuseness is key.
West coast is good because the summers are often sunny,
but Rainbows, as ethos, don't really always care, anyway, -
the party goes on wherever.

Rainbow is very self-organizing and selecting

the traffic movement, the food camps, the freedom ... All of it ...
it's a pretty cool organism

Mount Saint Helens: Silence at Rainbow - this forest party resumes, connecting, connecting, connecting.

Silence at Rainbow - July 4 2011

Silence at Rainbow,
well, mostly silence,
on the 4th.
This may be as
a kind of vigil to protest
an American empire,
an U.S. history of harming
(Rainbow began at the height
of the American War in Vietnam in '72),
or to protest American
production of Babylon,
but this silence is just nice,
in and of itself.

I like Rainbow in the mornings,
in general.
This India-like festival
in the state of Washington,
of peace, love and Rainbow,
straight out of the '60s,
wakes gradually.
Camps and tents -
this could also be 800 years ago
in forested north lands of Scandanavia,
in the summer -
dot the forests' edge, and the meadows.
Fires are stoked.
People find the sun and sit in it.
On this 4th of July,
there's more silence and sitting,
than other days here.

Last evening, Anta & Alna,
from Montana,
were walking around,
and saw Mt. St. Helen's
volcano, which blew on May 18, 1980,
when I was hiking the
Pacific Crest Trail
far south in California,
for the first time,
It blew again in 2003-2004,
and is, remarkably,
creating a glacier,
at a rapid rate,
these days.

Anta was blissing visibly, naturally,
when we first met.
She and a friend were eating
a sweet they got near
a dishwashing station.
Smiling away, we talked,
and walked on, together,
with another friend of hers,
Alna.

We visit the G-Funk Theatre,
sitting on its stage,
and begin to perform as audience,
all the while talking about a lot,
including eliciting bliss,
naturally and fulsomely -
like drawing a bow
across a cello,
whenever one wants -
all the time.

We, on the stage, give a
standing ovation,
to those on the grass,
where the Rainbow audiences sit,
as performers.
Those grass sitters are superb.

There's much poetry at Rainbow,
and colorful picturesqueness, too.
70 years' old hippies, with hair
and dreads, and a lot of young
folks, here come to camp & play,
and live this vision.
There are many white folks here,
and, perhaps like in the '60s,
there are also some African Americans, some Hispanics,
a fair number of good, nonharming white folks,
some folks with backgrounds from India,
and so many other folks
with all kinds of
different backgrounds -
a band,
all living, for this week,
a little like native Americans, even, ...
who came from across the Bering Strait
16,000 - 20,000 years ago, ...
and all grooving on the Rainbow vibe.
All hippies of yore, ...
are we humans like deer, or dogs,
or common chimpanzees -
seeing things differently at Rainbow?
So many Rainbows every year bring their dogs
with them into the forest, -
not much earth consciousness,
in this kind of human-canine pairbondness,
and beneficial connection, - and
'tis tres Rainbow.

Rainbow is diverse,
in its own, unique way,
and radical,
from progressive '60s,
in 2011, ~
and ... All Ways Free.
Loving you, Rainbow brothers & sisters.
There's abundance here, -
free food, a free gathering,
free camping and connecting in the woods,
a cool, sociocultural connectedness, -
an earth-ecology of consciousness,
finding its own way through time,
here re-grounding, in the forest;
it's a different National Forest
every year.
So many folks are sitting
around their fires,
and blankets, on the ground,
talking. Rainbow is so social,
and musical, -
it's dreamy to live like this,
in the woods,
for a spell.

I sit by a bend in the river -
I often go solo these days -
on this independence day.
There's much water, but cold!, this year
here at the Gathering,
from the significant
big creek flowing through it,
in early July, with snow melt run off.
I haven't swum yet,
and have seen almost no other Rainbows
in the water yet, -
this water is very cold.
The weather has been great thus far,
gray yesterday morning,
then sun in the afternoon.
It's sunny this morn ...
with lots of folks -
are we 10,000?
(it's very difficult to count) -
I've heard estimates of
7-8,000 in the past,
and 30,000 this year.

Harbin Hot Springs is a year round Rainbow Gathering,
but different, place-based, in California, -
as a sustainable community, -
but not intentional.

Sitting at the bend in the river,
in the sun,
I hear talk of psychedelic drugs -
DMT, Salvia.
'I like being high but not out of control, but not like that
on Salvia, - that's too much,'
a frizzy-hair blond guy says.
'Today's the day you tricked yourself,
the English don't control you,'
he continues,
in a fake Russian accent.
Sitting here, sitting there,
I hear talk of drugs, -
often from men, ...
and of relationships,- from
women's voices.
Hippy, women's consciousness
is sometimes, often traditional.
At the Rainbow Gathering,
since 1972,
men have been warriors,
... the signs about this
abound this year, too, ...
and the women the gatherers,
but warrior stuff is less in the air,
and mostly women are serving
the free food at the kitchen camps
spread out in this meadow-forest.
People are partying,
and making much music, in these woods.

Hippies are more in touch
with our love-appetites,
than some folks in modernities.
Peace, love & happiness.
Time is now-different at Harbin.

This India, spiritual festival
communitas is all around,
in beauty, for, of & by the people,
in a national forest, -
where we're probably
all breaking the law to celebrate in.
This is very India in America.

Last night in the meadow,
near the other, huge, main,
very-wet-and-swampy-in-the-middle meadow,
Rainbows gathered in circles,
from chalk drawn on the earth,
sitting on the ground,
stood up, held hands,
om-ed together.
In big almost-cauldrons,
carried by two,
and served by one other,
everyone was served,
blessed with abundant,
free stews and soups, -
fresh rolls, too.
Is this Woodstock,
without the music?

And is all of this due to 'larynx'? ...
which evolved,
years-millions' ago,
so that speech occurred,
for now 7 billion of us.
We now can focus and symbolize,
in such amazing ways,
and generate 'flow' experiences, -
and unfolding, creative,
bliss biology,
with music song and dance, especially.
This happens here at Rainbow.

Gutenberg's press,
with movable type,
the Industrial revolutions,
the Enlightenment,
consumerism,
the idea of freedom,
yes, politically -
(The French Revolution)
all so influence socialty,
now across the globe,
especially with the internet, -
we are living the modern world unfolding, -
as Rainbows here party in woods
on American independence day!

This river flowing through the Rainbow meadows,
with browns, greens, and sandy bottom, in the sun,
just keeps moving,
skookum plants on bank,
(it's everywhere in these meadows),
and lodgepole pines,
creating endless beauty,
when we tune in & watch it.

Rainbow -
a special musical score for blissing -
fractal-generates
while refracting light here now,
in ever new-old ways.

Watch & be the river
of Rainbows.

I walk to the main, not-swamp meadow.
Folks have moved the totem pole
to the center of the circle,
from where it was standing earlier,
nearby at a campfire circle.
Moving totem poles is native work.

Somebody, whom I just passed,
smoking a bong with 4 others,
yells toward the meadow
on this silent--in-the-morning
4th of July, almost barking
'Communication brings PEACE, not silence.'
Everybody in the meadow,
which is filling with folks around midday,
remains silent.
I cross the river, on a big log, to the shade.
A few others cross barefoot.
People are returning to our naturalness,
to our indian-ness, to peace, here at Rainbow.
People are living in an one-ness with nature,
in modernity,
the romance of 1st Turtle Islanders,
the first Native Americans,
notwithstanding.
People gather in the meadow
in silence, in the woods,
in togetherness, in peace.
The children - from Kidz camp - will break the silence, soon.
There's much meditation here,
this morning.

I sit across the river from most folks,
writing, writing, writing.
Someone does a sun salutation,
another someone plays with a hula hoop, and
someone else does Tai Chi.
The silence in the woods sings.

These lodgepole pines don't often
see so many people.

A roar from the other meadow -
no kids in this one -
people gather, hold hands
OM & om
and a cheer rises,
then drumming,
a native American chant ...
and a party erupts in the meadow
while people lay in the sun.

The silence is over
and this forest party resumes,
connecting, connecting, connecting.
