Dear C, P, and UC,
Very nice to meet you yesterday in person, C. Swarthmore College does seem great. (I lived at, and was involved with, Pendle Hill, a Quaker study center, a 1/2 mile from Swarthmore, for nearly 4 years). I'm glad the 'UCOE Virtual University,' with UC Berkeley leadership, is also developing well. Congratulations.
As startup World University and School begins to matriculate students (accreditation is a 3 stage process), first in 2014 for the 1st Bachelors' degree class (of perhaps 100 students, graduating in 2018), WUaS hopes to welcome Quaker kids, in particular, for free degrees, based on MIT Open Course Ware classes in virtual spaces. I hope the Swarthmore (and Stanford, also) ethoses will find their ways to inform virtual WUaS.
WUaS is in the process of affiliating with San Francisco Friends' Meeting, which I attend as a member. While free, online, interactive, MIT OCW degrees for Quaker kids, and others, in a time of rising education costs, will benefit many, WUaS is still tiny, and will be for years ahead.
Best wishes on further developing Virtual University / 'UCOE' (University of California Online Education ?, or what are you calling the UC virtual learning project), and looking forward to further idea sharing, especially about questions of quality in education.
All the best,
Scott

And from P:
Thanks, Scott! Nice to meet you.
My daughter graduated from "the Swarthmore of Portland" this year. What a great place.
Best wishes,
P
P:
I see ... not the Reed of Media/Wallingford, PA.
I hope Reed will inform WUaS in terms of the Conference Method (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning) face-to-face interaction in online spaces, in terms of distribution requirements (32 15 week long courses for a WUaS Bachelor's degree, over 4 years), in terms of required year-long Freshman Humanities AND Biology (with a programming component) courses, and in terms of a senior thesis, among other things. WUaS is seeking overachievers for free degrees, while remaining an open and free wiki meta-directory. WUaS would also like to hire Reedies, eventually, but also particularly people who have undergraduate or graduate degrees from MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale or Stanford and these (currently 34) great universities - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings, and especially Cal with its very diverse student body since WUaS is planning to have schools or universities (accrediting in 50-100 countries/languages) in all 3,000-8,000 languages and about 200 countries.
Very nice to meet you.
Best,
Scott
Dear P,
Very nice to meet you at "The Virtual University." Swarthmore does seem great (I lived at a Quaker study center 1/2 mile from Swarthmore for more than a year) ... I'm glad it was a good fit for your daughter. As startup World University and School begins to matriculate students (accreditation is a 3 stage process), first in 2014 for the 1st Bachelors degree class (of perhaps 100 students, graduating in 2018), WUaS hopes to welcome Quaker kids, in particular, for free degrees, based on MIT Open Course Ware classes in virtual spaces; I hope the Swarthmore (and Stanford, also) ethos will find their ways to inform virtual WUaS. Best wishes on further developing your course vis-a-vis your textbook - http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/~stark/SticiGui/index.htm - which I added to World University and School's Statistics' wiki subject: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Statistics!
Best wishes,
Scott

You'll find World University and School's mission at the top here -
and WUaS plans to be in 3,000-8,000 languages -
and develop an all-instrument music school,
heading toward Juilliard Music School, and other great music schools' quality,
all online ...

Vis-a-vis questions of quality and WUaS's student body, for free, open degrees (Bachs., Ph.D., Law and M.D.) ...
In terms of finding a quality of student body which might otherwise go to Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, MIT or Cambridge, for example, and thus bring WUaS further into conversation with these great universities in particular - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings, WUaS may have to generate such students itself, beginning in autumn 2012 by beginning to offer these MIT OCW High School courses interactively online for free, in Google Circles, for example.
