Hi M,

Very nice to talk the other night with you from the ranch, and glad Annie touched base with you on the same call.

Departed from the Wisdom Creek ranch tree farm in eastern Oregon (https://www.lagrandeobserver.com/business/4101232-151/oregon-tree-farm-system-gives-wisdom-creek-ranch) at 8:17am yesterday, have been thru Idaho, returned into Oregon, then through Nevada, then California, through Tahoe and the Sierra, ((and across the Pacific Crest Trail at Donner Pass - very near where I think I stopped hiking the PCT in 1980 to hitch up to Oregon to hike through half of that state then - wonderful trip. Took some pictures at the PCT with memories flooding back ... I love the high Sierras too)) ,  Made good time. Arrived in Canyon just before 10 pm - very long day, with nearly 15 hours in car - slept well. ('Maint Reqrd ' light came on in my '05 Prius near Idaho steadily, a worry, but should get turned off next oil change, and car worked well generally - so I'm glad I got the 25k factory maintenance and other repairs done at a Toyota Dealer 2 weeks ago).

Saw a guy from behind in Idaho at a rest stop with long gray hair, and psychedelic pants, as I circled the rest stop building, and it startled me a bit. Makes me think getting a hair cut before heading to Cuttyhunk could make sense ... and re WUaS as well. New perception - don't want to startle people possibly with long hair for example. On the other hand, long hair could be beneficial for branding WUaS even - John Legere, MIT grad, and T-Mobile CEO USA has long hair, and may even dye it - and it works for him, and is not 'startlng,' I think. Observations while traveling ...

Traveling was fun ... as was seeing ANNIE, who seems well. Very nice to talk with her - and the ranch also is a glory of a sustainable tree farm, and home (it''s so rural!, and beautiful) and still on the frontier somehow. Annie and I drove in her 2007 Prius with many dashboard lights on incl 'Maint Reqrd' to visit with Butch and Karen, her neighbors next door - which was great). Nice to have visited the ranch last year with You, Sandy, Alden and Marianne for Ted Brown's memorial together.

Looking forward to seeing you on Cuttyhunk at the end of July. Talk soon. On with World Univ and Sch here today and the NSF grant. Many of the items above are assets in our family, and seeing WUaS this way is a very good idea too.

What are you up to today?

Lovely music, Patti,
Nice haircut, Betsy, (and nice to see you at Reed on June 10th too!)
Thanks, Barbara (& re hummingbird alighting on finger in NE Oregon, see email to my mother below),
Carrying on piping here, whatever the bag-jacket color difference, Heather :)

Was fun when I first arrived at the sustainable tree farm your brother created (Wisdom Creek ranch), and was talking with Annie, to watch the hummingbirds at the feeder on their porch. Annie said they would land on someone's finger with patience. So I put my finger out very near the feeder, and waited 3 or 4 minutes (or longer even), as some hummingbirds continued to feed on the sugar water (they're voracious eaters of sweet-water :). Finally one hummingbird let down its "landing gear," its teeny weentsee feet - which retract very completely into its feathers, almost invisibly so when flying - and
did a little jig on my finger. It was not only a possible kind of lesson in life (and perhaps the natural world - naturalism), but also a lesson in evolutionary biology. When mentioning this last night at Scottish Country Dancing OpenBand to Barbara .... she asked whether hummingbirds are a bit like humans and aware of whether they were landing on a person, I think - and I said I think they're more like little robots, evolutionarily informed ... and my finger was a kind of branch, (where their feet/claws have alighted on branches over millions of generations as they feed, with their amazingly fast flapping wings, almost automatically).

Have you ever had a hummingbird land on your finger at your feeder on Cuttyhunk? Try it sometime (again) if you're interested. You have to hold your finger close to the feeder for a long time.

A bit more about Oregon / Pacific NW visit here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/wallowa-whitman-national-forest-saw-guy.html - and the hummingbird feeder would be just by my left ear in the photo with my cousin Ann (wearing yellow).
