Hi Ma,

Thanks too for affirming our big educational project is carrying Lego robotics when we spoke.

Will Tweet today about this Mars mission, people / learners making Lego robotics' spaceships and rovers, and creating a realistic virtual universe for Lego so we can all travel with, virtually and physically - before mid-July :)

Fascinating to go to Mars - again.

Love, Scott

When did we first land a spacecraft on Mars? The Viking landers were the first spacecraft to land on Mars in the 1970s. Viking 1 and Viking 2 each had both an orbiter and a lander. On July 20, 1976 the Viking 1 Lander separated from the Orbiter and touched down on the surface of Mars

Ma,

Air conditioning? ( https://sites.dartmouth.edu/dujs/2016/02/17/a-journey-to-the-center-of-the-sun/ ?) In the space ship? ON the way to the sun - but when? And a heater, in the spaceship, on Mars' mission with people in the 2030s possibly? (And a plan with robots on earth and other planets to manage the nuclear waste even if part of this, and re 200,000 year storage & geology questions).

Will we be still talking then thanks to aging reversal and genetic engineering? O my goodness! :)

edX Edge

Hi Sri, All,

Brilliant, and thanks, Rifai. (This email correspondence continues from https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/oriental-dwarf-kingfisher-mit-solve.html).

From this it looks like WUaS can sign on newly as a university, and experiment with course building 'on the edge' from here:

Am an appreciator of edX programmer in Brookline, Massachusetts, Ned Batchelder's thinking and modus operandi - way of relating - (in your 2nd link).

Found too:
What is edX Edge, and how does it differ from edX?
What is the difference between edX and edge? edX is the home of MOOCs and open to the world while edge is open to on-campus courses. The platform technology is the same, edX/open edX. Usually, we develop on edge to experiment with to them move to the MOOC platform

Rifai, and All - I'm in communication with Lego robotics' people re - https://education.lego.com/en-us/shop/find-distributor - and a distributor has to be in a country to get Lego to people there. And it looks like Sri Lanka doesn't have a distributor. Will include you in related emails. (Marisol - some countries in south and central America may not have distributors as well). In seeking to make Lego robotics' kits available to matriculating WUaS students for engineering and science degrees, WUaS has recently become a carrier, but not yet a reseller, in the US only. And WUaS is exploring other countries (there are about 130 out of 206), where there aren't distributors. Stay tuned.

Best regards, Scott

request opening an edX technical account to create World Univ & Sch's own courses

Dear edX Edge,

At the suggestion of a colleague, I'm writing to request opening an edX technical account to create World Univ & Sch's own courses. And my colleague would be interested in working out something using edX studio with this account as well, and potentially in 2 non-English languages. With this in mind, I just opened a personal Edge edX account https://edge.edx.org/u/WorldUnivAndSch.

I found this edX email address here - https://wikis.utexas.edu/display/MOOC/About+edX+edge+-+FAQs - but World Univ & Sch is a separate startup online 'edge' university, planned in each of all ~200 countries and their official and main languages, and offering online degrees emerging from best STEM CC-4 OCW in its 4 languages (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ and https://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm) to begin.

Thank you.

Best regards, Scott

I am excited that you would like to create a course on edX!

Could you please clarify if you are affiliated with any of edX's existing partners or is World University and School new to the edX platform?

Thank you,

Hi Lena,

Thanks for your reply. I am excited to explore creating a course on edX, and more than one regarding World University and School!

World University and School is not affiliated with any of edX's existing partners, and World University and School is new to the edX platform?

Thank you,

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your note! Our apologies for any confusion - our technical team supports edX partners on the edX.org and edX Edge instances of the platform. This team is currently unable to provide individual support to users of other Open edX instances.

As an alternative, we encourage you to visit http://open.edx.org/, the community site for the Open edX development community. The contact section of the Open edX portal (https://open.edx.org/contact-us) has multiple options and channels for you to get support on common topics like installing the platform, troubleshooting, and other developer-facing issues.

If you are interested in becoming a partner, you can find more information here: https://www.edx.org/schools-partners#moreaboutpartnership

If you are interested in partnering with edX to offer courses and programs, please visit partnerships.edx.org.

If you are a business or corporation interested in using edX to train and develop your employees, please visit business.edx.org.

I hope the above helps!

Dear Larry,

Just received this email reply regarding WUaS's request to join Edge edX, and seeking to parse this reply regarding the Open edX Zoom session this morning I attended with Ned Batchelder facilitating - and other recent suggestions for WUaS to join Open edX (- as well as some major updates over the past 18 months Ned mentioned too today, so maybe Open edX has become more user friendly; and edX is built upon Open edX, and Edge edX is peripheral or used for various things, said Ned) ... The bottom half of the email below referring to partnering involves I think money WUaS doesn't have. Ned is I think the key architect in Open edX, and it seems to be the central platform underpinning all of edX, so I think it makes sense to become part of the Open edX development community (and not Edge edX), and seek support for beginning to build courses from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare for our WUaS matriculating students this autumn here even; and hopefully others will join in, and hopefully too MIT OCW into Open edX will be easy (and even planned for). Edge edX may have been a good way into all of this too - and into Open edX in particular (but I don't really see myself as a developer :0) ).

What do you think?

Sincerely, Scott

Hi Lena,

Thanks so much for your email reply regarding WUaS's request to explore joining Edge edX (suggested by a colleague), and am seeking also to parse your reply regarding the Open edX Zoom session - https://twitter.com/OpenEdX/status/1281212341917560832?s=20 - this morning I attended with Ned Batchelder facilitating - and other recent suggestions for WUaS to join Open edX (- as well as some major Open edX updates over the past 18 months Ned mentioned too today, - and that edX is built upon Open edX, and Edge edX has been used for various things in the past, said Ned) ... I think World University and School, which is 'best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric,' and seeking to potentially offer WUaS's planned 6 undergraduate majors (EECS, Gen. Engineering, Gen. Science, English, History, and Business - worlduniversityandschool.org - as we license and accredit first in CA) this autumn for free-to-students' online Bachelor degrees, thanks to CC-4 licensing, and emerging from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare as well. Ned made explicit the clear distinction between edX and Open edX, - and I think WUaS is now seeking to join the Open edX community.

The bottom half of your email below referring to partnering involves I think money WUaS doesn't have. (Am I reading this correctly?) And since Ned is I think the key architect in Open edX, and it seems to be the central platform underpinning all of edX itself, I think it makes sense to become part of the Open edX development community (and not part of Edge edX), and seek support for beginning to build courses from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare for our WUaS matriculating students this autumn here even; and hopefully others will join in, and hopefully too adapting best STEM CC-4 OCW into Open edX will be somewhat easy (and per the CC-4 licensing attributes: a) Share, b) Adapt, but c) Non-commercially).  Thanks to your email I think WUaS is now interested in developing with Open edX in particular (but I don't really see myself as a developer :0) ). Thanks for the developer support information for Open edX! And greetings to Ned!

Thank you!

All the best, Scott

But World Univ & Sch doesn't have a technical team in place.

Hi Rifai, All,

Thanks again from your emails, and I've numbered your most recent 2 at bottom, with my responses here:

1
Thanks again for this MERLOT opportunity - https://www.merlot.org/merlot/viewSite.htm?id=9160704 - and let's add it too to the Library Resources' wiki page at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources. At this stage, and for our WUaS matriculating students potentially beginning September 1st, 2020 - from Sri Lanka esp. - WUaS doesn't see the use for these Merlot resources beyond adding them to wiki. WUaS is still, however, looking for student access to a major online University research library, in multiple languages - and to create this further ourselves too.

1a
Do you think you'll be able to find 1000 Sri Lankan toppers to matriculate Sept 1, and of whom 100 might complete a 4year free-to-students' undergraduate degree (if WUaS is lucky)? As you may have seen, the engineering, EECS and science students / major would have to get their Lego robotics from India - https://www.edutechindia.com/ - at this time, per Lego's Matt Clark's email earlier today.

Am still waiting to hear back about my WUaS Open edX inquiry, to Lena at the edX-partner-support email address - partner-support@edx.org. edX key programmer/architect Ned Batchelder said Open edX and edX are quite separate entities (but Anant Agarwal may have a different view).

2
The reason again WUaS can't become a edX partner per https://partnerships.edx.org/#form relates to "significant, one-time financial contribution to the edX consortium" which WUaS doesn't have:

"We seek institutional partners who are ready to commit in two fundamental ways:
With strategic, in-demand course content contributions; and
Through significant, one-time financial contribution to the edX consortium in return for the services and benefits edX provides."

But it's possible too that Anant or Ned, or together, could allow WUaS to become partners re Open edX, without the money requirement!

Thanks for letting me know that edX, Open edX, and Google Classroom re G Suite for Education are working together regarding your - "students to login to Google Classroom and edX LMS using the same account details. They can login to edX using their Google account to learn and to WUaS Google Classroom for assessments. Also check out the below link from edX" -  re online campus - https://partnerships.edx.org/online-campus - and WUaS isn't yet partner (the wording seems important), and doesn't seem to be able to become one, a partner, yet. For a campus, I also have a realistic virtual earth in mind.

See my email inquiry to Lena and edX below regarding WUaS's lack of technical team, and therefore seeking a technical team at Open edX, probably.

3
Regarding your -

"Second partnering with edX Founders or partners of edX like MIT only for the 6 programmes. We create these courses in collaboration with them."

- and for clarification reasons:
WUaS is a separate legal entity (2 legal entities, - in the US) from MIT and Open edX, and it's the Creative Commons' 4 licensing of MIT OpenCourseWare (separate from MIT and MITx etc) that allows WUaS to develop our own 6 majors, based on courses in CC-4 MIT OCW (in its 4 languages). So WUaS will seek here potentially to become a Developer in Open edX (and possibly a Partner, depending on what edX says), and then WUaS will develop MIT OCW into Open edX course software. Licensing and language are significant here.

4
Again, see our correspondence yesterday and including my email inquiry to Lena and edX below regarding WUaS's lack of technical team, and therefore seeking a technical team at Open edX, probably.

Since it's looking like Open edX is the platform underlying edX and edX Edge too (per what Ned said yesterday in this Open edX Online MeetUp yesterday - https://twitter.com/OpenEdX/status/1281212341917560832?s=20), and that since Ned Batchelder is key here (and nice / friendly / helpful / hip even), hearing back from Lena today at - partner-support@edx.org - will give WUaS further information about best how to proceed.

Rifai, would you like to become acting head or president of Sri Lanka World Univ & Sch? I'd bring this up in the open online WUaS Monthly Business Meeting on Sa July 18, 2020, if you might be.

Thanks so so much, Rifai! If you think you might be able to find 1000 high achieving Sri Lankan high school student 'toppers' by September 1, and if 250 of these are possibly science, engineering and EECS undergraduates studying from home, and with Lego robotics, do you want to think about how you might let these students know how to order their Lego Robotics' kits from Chennai, India, in time to begin playing with Lego in early September?

I'll keep you all posted about what I hear back from - partner-support@edx.org - hopefully today.

Regards,
Scott

I went through the discussion with edX edge team. They are suggesting to host our  own version of edX using Open edX. The other option is to join them as a partner.  Providing on demand course content to edX to create paid content or by providing a one time contribution. I can share non MIT open course content. It is either of the two. Try submitting a partnership inquiry form at https://partnerships.edx.org/#form

3

Second partnering with edX Founders or partners of edX like MIT only for the 6 programmes. We create these courses in collaboration with them.

4

Plan B would be to install core open edX in your domain or the domain I introduced sometime back. I can share the details if you can get the core software installed I can help with customisation and adding features. I think I shared some links on installing Open edX. I have not installed edX but I have experience working with Moodle from scratch. Plan C would be to use Google accounts to login to both Google Classroom and edX. Plan D would be to integrate edX with Moodle.

We will have to look into becoming an online supplier or partnering with one.

My questions and comments posted in text chat:

Excellent, Yvain, and great too to see an application of the edX course interface. Brainstorming-wise, in what ways could you see eventually helping endusers to actually be able to design architecturally their renovations (with regulations even) and in a Realistic Virtual Earth for Architecture - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForArchitecture?src=hashtag_click - and with this drawing example too - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1074087349829554176?s=20 - all in a Do it Yourself vein? Lego robotics in all ~200 countries & their languages, and the WUaS  Educational Services' Store now carrying Lego robotics' kits ...

Dear Matt and Sri and Marisol (and All),

Thanks for your reply, Matt. Some further brainstorming questions here.

Since a reseller has to be in a country to get Lego to people there, what would you suggest for getting the Lego robotics' kits that World Univ & Sch is newly carrying - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - to WUaS students this autumn to English speaking students who might live in Sri Lanka, Spanish, and Quechua language countries? There don't appear to be any Lego resellers in Sri Lanka or in Uruguay for example (and Marisol here is an instructor of Quechua and Spanish at Stanford). And it looks like Sri Lanka doesn't have a distributor, especially. Sri (M. Rifai above - with his new SriLanka@worlduniversityandschool.org email address) and I have been communicating much in recent weeks, and we've talked about finding 1000 Sri Lankan students this autumn (high achieving 'toppers'), a percentage of whom will be online engineering, science and EECS undergraduate majors at WUaS in Sri Lanka and in English (- and not in the Sinhala or Tamil languages yet) - and potentially taking edX courses (emerging, for ex., from https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/). How might WUaS best get Lego robotics' kits to Sri Lankans this autumn?

I count 86 countries on the Lego distribution list - https://education.lego.com/en-us/shop/find-distributor - out of 206 countries (per the Summer Olympics that would have happened soon were it not for the coronavirus pandemic), so about 120 countries aren't on this distributors' list. Since the WUaS Educational Services' Store now carrying Lego Robotics' kits would like to become a US reseller in the future, as we develop our web site's store with machine learning and machine translation for all ~200 countries especially, is there a way WUaS could please somehow get on a Lego list of being interested in becoming a reseller in these 130 remaining countries, for example? And brainstorming-wise, if getting on this list might be possible, could Julian Dumitrascu (with WUaS) somehow become the head of Europe WUaS Educational Services' Store (with America and Asia WUaS Educational Services' Store being the other 2 regions) for other countries in Europe not on the Lego distributors' list?

And since Sri (M Rifai) in Sri Lanka has been translating WUaS into the Sinhala (and Tamil) languages there - and it's possible Marisol could help find Quechua and Spanish speakers to help further the machine translation WUaS is developing - perhaps they will facilitate the WUaS Sinhala language, Quechua and Spanish WUaS language translation aspects with regards to making Lego Robotics' kits available first in the USA to speakers of these languages here; And Julian and Nicolai too for Romanian speakers in the USA too?

(Julian and Nicolai in Romania: as you probably have read, it looks like prospective Romanian students who speak English and who are interested in matriculating at WUaS this autumn online will be able to get Lego robotics' kits for their engineering, science and EECS undergraduate degrees from an upcoming Lego distributor in Romania. Good news!

Matt and All, for your information, the WUaS Educational Services' Store is part of the WUaS Corporation / Press and a parallel legal entity to World Univ & Sch itself. The WUaS Corporation is licensed in California as a for profit general stock company, planned also in all ~200 countries' and in all 7,117 known living languages (like 501 c 3 tax exempt World Univ & Sch) - with remarkable potential synergies.

These are WUaS's 2 legal entities:

There are a few other people in this email in other countries who may help find matriculating students for WUaS this autumn, and which students would get Lego robotics' kits regarding WUaS home robotics - https://twitter.com/hashtag/WUaSHomeRobotics?src=hashtag_click

Thank you, Matt, and looking forward to hearing your thoughts about getting Lego robotics' kits to Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka in particular.

I think WUaS could become a remarkable growth story for Lego robotics!

Scott
