Dear Friend/Colleague,

Thank you for joining the waiting list for the American Teacher Act briefing today.

We will be livestreaming the event via Representative Wilson's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/repwilson

Please also join us for a post-briefing celebration at Sonoma in their private dining room from 6:00-8:00pm at 223 Pennsylvania Ave, SE.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Ellen

Ellen Sherratt | Board President | she/her | The Teacher Salary Project

Ensuring teaching becomes the prestigious, desirable, financially viable, and professionally exciting job we all know it needs to be.

Katherine and Ellen,

Thanks. Haven't been on FB for years (since I think the MIT OCW-centric wiki World University & School page there got archived, without World Univ & Sch wanting this) ... but some of these FB pages are here ... scottmacleod.com ... World Univ & Sch seeks to pay our teachers salaries comparable to MIT's salaries, and Boston / Cambridge MA salaries in the future, but WUaS hasn't hired yet after becoming a 501 c 3 in 2010. I Hope this will change (Developing WUaS has been a long haul!).

Thanks, abolition-ally,  Scott

Dear Katherine and Ellen,

Regarding the WUaS FB page becoming archived, I had this "WUaS FB page" and also that this "was archived" too here - scottmacleod.com - but both words seem to have disappeared, due I think to webpage or website host's lack of security. Could Facebook have unethically edited my World Univ & Sch FB page remotely? C'est possible. Am boycotting FB for some of these reasons, so won't be attending this livestream from FB.

Best wishes, abolition-ally, thanks, Scott

Happy New Year from writer Henry Cutter (and Shady Side Academy high school friend)!

Hi Scott

I hope all is well in Pittsburgh. It sounds like there are some positive things about being there—-being closer geographically to your mother, familiar places, a network of people interested in things Scottish, country dancing, music, and just a change of scene sound excellent.

Here the new year has kicked off but without much of the excitement of the end of 2022. I’m at a bit of a loose end as things kick off, though I do have stuff to do. I think I would like to get some kind of credential in teaching English as a second language, both because with the migrants flooding into the northeast from the southern border, that could be useful, but also because it matches my interest in languages, which is something I have discovered in recent years and think i might like to do as a sort of second career post journalism.

I continue to study Italian, which is fun because I am at the point where I can read real things without a lot of trouble and also listen to podcasts and mostly follow them. I’m doing Arabic on Duolingo and reviewing Japanese with a hope of going to Japan this summer because Alice is going to Kyoto for a trimester abroad. I have a teacher (pretty good deal via a site called Italki, for $18 an hour) who lives in Hokkaido and offers me the chance to talk and make lots of mistakes. An Arabic teacher will have to wait until I have been to Japan and can let my knowledge of the language go back to rack and ruin.

I am also enjoying yoga, as we talked about earlier. This week, in-person yoga classes resumed at the gym at work, so I am trying to go. Wednesday was the first time I had been to an in-person class, not counting one led by Louis’ girlfriend, in the almost three years since i started. It was interesting to do it in a group, though somewhat distracting. I found myself looking…how are other people making out with these positions, rather than just doing them. But it wasn’t too bad, or too distracting.

Work, meanwhile, has been hard. We just battle to get the stories edited for the Barron’s website with a decent level of quality and timeliness. Sometimes I feel like I am putting too much into it, that there should be a better limit on when my day ends, while the two people who report to me just check out at the end of their allotted time. On the positive side, sometimes we have great moments of working together and getting something done well, or I edit an article and make it really nice, and a lot of people read it, at least relative to other work we put out at Barron’s. Another plus is that the staff is nice and the office is comfortable and social, with free coffee. So I can go in and see my work friends and if I have time, hit the gym on the way out.

i am still hoping to get super fit so I can scamper up the trails in Randolph this summer. The yoga made me a lot stronger for when we went on a hike in Tasmania this winter, and I had been doing some aerobic exercise as well, so I found it easier than it might have been. But the fact is, the trails in New Hampshire are super rocky and rough, so those elsewhere can seem not too bad, At Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, a World Heritage area that gets money from Unesco, all the trails are super maintained and manicured, which makes the walking easier. Lots of duckboards that put you above (and therefore outside) the landscape, but also prevent the widening and deepening of paths that can happen when a lot of people traveling the same ground seek the easiest footing.

I’ll attach a couple of photos and wish you well for 2023.

Henry

Ken, John, Ed, All,

Thanks to my mother for suggesting on my birthday at the Frick Museum cafe talking with you . And thanks for saying you would talk with me on the phone before you were planning to go to Scotland on 1/13/22!

One item I'd like to talk with you about - and think there are benefits to writing to all of you in these regards - is the "She Dies" comment I heard in the Carnegie Library Main branch in Oakland the other day (search here: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2023/01/northern-damselfly-dragonfly-coenagrion.html?m=0) and whether this could be construed wven as a possible death threat to my mother. It might be good to talk about this sooner than later if UPMC health care coverage is forthcoming ... and this could be a further reason for UPMC health coverage to cover our possible 6 sessions, sooner than later.  What do you think, Ken?

Just texted my mother:

"Good morning, my wonderful mother! Looking forward to seeing you today. Glad to have sent out the WUaS 1/21/23 Agenda - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2023/01/ambystoma-annulatum-ringed-salamander.html?m=0 -  and 12/17/22 Minutes   and Season's Greetings' 2022 email yesterday ... and I still haven't heard back from Ken Thompson MD regarding talking with him  ... Not sure if he's in Scotland or back in Pgh or what's up ... May try to call him early next week! How are you and how was your week? To go or not to go to the Sunnyhill Singles UU Church on Sunday? Heading back to the SF Bay Area potentially in late summer, if I hear back somehow from state and federal law people  that Canyon is newly safe (per John Sargent MD and Ed Smyth MD) ... AND perhaps in talking with Ken Thompson MD too! Thank you! See you soon, Love, Scott (fascinating longevity genetic drug evidence - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2023/01/northern-emerald-dragonfly-only-breeds.html?m=0 - in these 2 pictures of mice littermates, one which has been prematurely genetically aged apparently). ðŸ’•, Scott

Looking forward to talking with you Ken ! Thank you!
