Wild lorikeet: Sophisticated definition of language: "Languages as particles, waves, and fields..." from "The Ethnologue," WUaS engages "The Ethnologue" and its current 7413 languages, to inform our approach to developing a school in every language, and for the WUaS Universal Translator ...

Sophisticated definition of language:

"Languages as particles, waves, and fields. Scholars are recognizing that languages are not always easily nor best treated as discrete, identifiable, and countable units with clearly defined boundaries between them (Makoni and Pennycook 2006). Rather, a language is more often comprised of continua of features that extend across time, geography, and social space. There is growing attention being given to the roles or functions that language varieties play within the linguistic ecology of a region or a speech community. The Ethnologue approach to listing and counting languages does not preclude a more dynamic understanding of the linguistic makeup of the countries and regions we report on. While discrete linguistic varieties can be distinguished, we also recognize that those varieties exist in a complex set of relationships to each other. Languages can be viewed, then, simultaneously as discrete units (particles) amenable to being listed and counted, as continua of features across time and space (waves) that are best studied in terms of variational tendencies as examples of “change in progress”, and as parts of a larger ecological matrix (field), where functional roles and usage of the linguistic codes for a wide range of purposes are more in focus. All three of these perspectives, language as particle, wave, and field (Lewis 1999; Pike 1959), are useful and important. Ethnologue focuses primarily on the unitary nature of languages without prejudice against the other perspectives." ...

Swimming tiger: What are your key CHALLENGES right now? MONIES ... And what sort of CONNECTIONS would be most helpful to you going forward? STUDENT DEVELOPERS and Instructors ... at World University and School

http://images.colourbox.com/thumb_COLOURBOX561759.jpg

Hi, E,

Thanks for your recent message and inquiries.

Key challenges:

Besides, getting first monies to hire said undergraduate programmer matriculated at a great university, probably to work on developing WUaS anew on Creative Commons' licensed Wikidata / Wikibase, and monies to purchase the first book inventory in the WUaS online, bookstore / computer store (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS - in U.N. languages plus Portuguese, a lingua franca for a significant part of Africa, for the bachelor and I.B. degrees), and monies to become financially operational,

... gaining access/connections to a mass of student interns matriculated at great universities, such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, + with said monies.

There's a creative opportunity at WUaS: how to start and develop a great online university in all 7, 413 languages and at least 205 countries, with free degrees ... for coders, faculty, heads of schools, managers, lawyers, doctors, artists, journalists, researchers, innovators and inventors. WUaS has a STEM focus and would like to colloborate significantly with MIT and Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge +, over the long run.

So, further in terms of connections, how to get access, department by department, to offer job announcements at Stanford, MIT, H.Y.P., Cambridge +, for online bachelor, Ph.D., I.B. law and M.D. degree-related jobs, would be very helpful, and eventually in all languages and countries. :)

Good luck with your upcoming MIT talk.

(I'm working on giving a talk at UC Berkeley in two weeks without remuneration, as well, and also applying for a college teaching position and an editing job to pay the bills).

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
Thank you. Sorry I'll have limited Internet access in the next few weeks because of my travels in Asia and preparation for my talk at MIT, but I'll be sure to check in whenever I got a chance.
Yes, I do know some very good coders at Google and Facebook. As you may know, however, the silicon valley mentality at this point is that the good coders won't take on anything short of a 1-billion customer potential, or a minimum of 200K in evaluation. So I might just go with a Stanford undergrad :)
What are your key challenges right now? And what sort of connections would be most helpful to you going forward?
Thanks,
E

Bottlenose Dolphin: Further generation of conversation about WUaS Marketing and Business Plans (from the Stanford course: 'Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship'

http://assets.wwf.org.uk/img/dolphin_3_500_5982.jpg

Dear HP, RB and T,

Thanks for further generating conversation about WUaS Marketing and Business Plans in Stanford's course: 'Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship'.

Videos are on the way for the Marketing Plan, Heidy (see her message below)

RB (see his message below), - about your helpful ideas:

1) not be highlighting Wikipedia that much

Wiki is what distinguishes free-degree, MIT-centric WUaS from so much OER (Open Educational Resources) which is out there on the web, and also what makes it so richly generative, for people -to-people teaching and learning. I see your point, but as I see it, in the information age, competition is collaborative opportunity, plus is a very different entity, from pre-digital age company - to - company competition. So how to define WUaS's interaction with Wikipedia ahead - for a WUaS universal translator, for all 7,413 languages, when Wikipedia is in 285 - are important questions. And WUaS is doing something similar, so I see this as a complementary opportunity, potentially defined by ongoing increasing conversation with Wikipedia, something that hasn't emerged over 4+ years, rather than leading to a competitive strategy, that would play down the wondrous Wikipedia. WUaS is planning to move from Wikia to Creative Commons' licensed Wikidata / Wikibase, - which is being written with Wikipedia's 285 languages in mind with CC licensing - in the not too distant future.

Accreditation is a long process, and commitment, for WUaS, and while Wikipedia / Wikimedia (the umbrella organization) have Wikiversity, I haven't heard about any accreditation plans there, - in years. Wiki vision is important in developing wiki resources.

In terms of branding, with CC licensed online organizations, I think identification with MIT, Yale and Wikipedia has much merit at this stage, since they are both known and understood.

2 Good headline / title suggestions for a Marketing Plan ...

Here's further what WUaS is about:

Here's the Admissions page for WUaS for free degrees (in many, many languages and countries):

And here's the SUBJECT TEMPLATE at WUaS, a key to much of WUaS:

3.
a.) Target audience: Eventual students and book/computer buyers at

and

via Speakers of all 7,413 languages -

and in < 205 countries -

b.) Our content Partners

besides MIT OCW and Yale OYC,

it will be editors (volunteer editors, such as at Wikipedia),

and the WUaS wiki policies themselves, paralleling Wikipedia's which are our content partners

and a mass of student interns matriculated at great universities, such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, +

MIT and Yale are compelling selling points for academic content in much of the world, both as academic standard, and content, and also in terms of overachieving student bodies.

c) Assurance on Quality

MIT OCW, Yale OYC, and eventually WUaS's employees

In point of fact, there have not been that many (external - i.e. not mine) edits (1,000-2,000-ish?) over 4+ years, and while a new, wiki interface will probably increase this, I think good patterns are in place for quality assurance.

d)
Address what need of the audience we are fulfilling?

Universal, high quality online education with free, MIT-centric degrees ...

I think WUaS will learn about this from our own matriculated students beginning in 2014.

WUaS would like to make learning very enjoyable / fun / 'flow' experiences, as well as MIT-centric.

The wiki will facilitate some of this.

e.) A Punch line

Let's think further about conclusions to the Marketing Plan statement.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Here's a first version of the Marketing Plan on my blog: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/10/wreath-with-oak-leaves-cyclades.html .

HP

RB, a member of World University and School Team - like Wikipedia with MIT OCW

Scott,
Great attempt at the first page.
Team,
My prospective for Marketing.
1) I believe we should not be highlighting Wikipedia that much. In future, it will be a competitor; vying for time from people writing wiki pages and any revenue model for wiki(s) if we plan to raise working capital on the portal. We should only promote the service/ product as a Wiki service but not name another wiki portal in marketing portfolio.
2) Currently we are emphasizing on a free online degree; where as the wiki page provides a lot more in respect of the content.
Can we reword our headline; Something like "World's best universities in Your room; at the click of Your fingertip" provides more control to the target audience hence increases receptivity.
3) A Business/ Marketing plan would address:-
a.) Target Audience - We need to clearly identify and convey who we want to read our page.
b.) Our content Partners - Who will help us put the content in place as content on Wiki is the primary selling point.
c.) Assurance on Quality:- As Wiki is a freely editable portal; how we would propose to maintain the Quality and ensure there is neither anything illegal nor irrelevant. If Quality goes down; our audience will turn away.
d.) Address what need of the audience we are fulfilling?
e.) A Punch line, is a must to convey all with minimum use of words. e.g. World's knowledge village. or Knowledge not confined by campus walls.
Just a few thoughts I wanted to present before the group to take appropriate decisions.
Regards
RB

Hi Telemachus,

WUaS would like to become the MIT / Harvard of the internet (accrediting on MIT OCW for free bachelor, Ph.D., I.B., law and M.D. degrees in some languages and countries), and a wiki-school in each of all 7, 413 languages and at least 205 countries, each a wiki page to begin. Hi Scott,

I have reviewed the material & the links that you sent me.

It seems that you have done a really serious job in generating all this information. I think the marketing plan is articulate and straightforward.

The objectives are clear, timelines seem to have been set in the short/or long term successfully and the mission statement is clear enough. Finally, in regards to the marketing budget and Key Performance Indicators, I think that you have created a realistic scenario which is likely to be viable.

Thanks a lot,

Tele

Elephant ears: Thoughts about making practicing fun, inspiring and enjoyable, Practicing - Playing a Musical Instrument, wiki page at WUaS, Sociality and Practicing on the Internet

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2QAX89GI-rgnNDapW22puYiym6DWA0mroIjSTk07oA6dmMfl6vDKY97h45IUGPAm4kFgQvC8sIzbSaWm7_rqD2qXl0-P_im7Mpdyn6JUQ2QMBmc0M__PyOGeaGZtYNPdxpmMzlJYXJLI/s320/IMG_7987.JPG

Hi In,

Ok, see you on Skype on 10/29 with a further email in between concerning the differential daylight saving's time change around then.

... am taking this email opportunity to think through, and in writing, further how to make daily playing fun, realistically ... have played the last 2 nights right before bed for about 15 minutes each due to procrastination and lack of inspiration ... perhaps due to the repetition ... in my goal of building toward memorizing all 3 MSRs and the PCPB Medley ...

Playing with awareness {consciousness} has value in my book, for learning's sake and enjoyment's ('flow') sake, but the daily repetition to build for memorization's sake gets in the way ... a pattern dating back to my first decade of music playing (piano) ...

So, what to do, if memorization is the goal, and repetition helps with this? Adding variety and playing longer for this variety ? Playing with someone around who is inspiring (for example, my mother ) ...

And I added the 'getting paid to play / practice' idea you mentioned last week vis-a-vis the Strathclyde police pipe band here: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Practicing_-_Playing_a_Musical_Instrument.

Just thinking out loud ... I suppose getting paid from a university (academics get paid to play, as well, in some ways), for example, to play 2 hours a day might do the trick ... as would very fun, online, musical playing spaces (something I've facilitated in Google + group video hangouts with R possibly 10 times, but there's internet lag still ... nevertheless, the sociality changes the dynamic of the repetition of practicing) in real time  :)

... as would generating further a musical culture here online (and in the East Bay Hills) where lots of people make music a lot of the time ... the College of Piping in Glasgow is partly this idea ... Who enjoys practicing there, in the sense of rocking out on it, and why, I wonder? ... learning from others ... Nevertheless, I hear you, as a professional piper, when you say daily repetition / playing is key to practicing and memorizing - and for at least 15 minutes - which brings me back to the question of how to enliven and inspire this (given patterns I've learned)? :)

But talking about this (conversation), as well as playing, with friends (a little sunshine :) is probably another part of the answer :)

Cheers,
Scott
