The MIT Media Lab seeks a new kind of early career faculty member, not defined by discipline, rather by his or her unique and iconoclastic experience, style and points of view. You can be a designer, inventor, scientist, scholar or other – any combination – as long as you make things that matter. Impact is key.

This means somebody with at least these three sets of characteristics:


  • Being deeply versed in a minimum of two fields, preferably not ones normally juxtaposed; 
  • Being an orthogonal and counter-intuitive thinker, even a misfit within normal structures; 
  • Having an adventurous personality, boundless optimism, and desire to change the world.


Any disciplines apply as long as their confluence shows promise of solving big, hard, and long-term problems. And, most importantly, candidates must explain why their work really can only be done at the Media Lab. We prefer candidates not be similar to our existing faculty. We welcome applicants who have never considered academic careers.

Successful candidates will:  establish and lead their own research group within the Media Lab; engage in collaborative projects with industrial sponsors and other Media Lab research groups; actively contribute to shaping the open and creative culture that defines our community; supervise masters and doctoral students; and participate in the Media Arts and Sciences academic program.
Appointments will be within the Media Arts and Sciences academic program, principally at the Assistant Professor level.  A doctorate is not necessary, but evidence of extreme creativity is.
To apply, please fill out the application.  Applicants will be asked to upload their CV; link to a personal website; links for three publications; and the names (and contact information) of three references.  A personal statement of no more than two pages should include the applicant’s plans for exploring big ideas and challenging questions, and discuss what the applicant will bring to the Media Lab and how the Lab will enable you to accomplish your goals.

CURIOUS how to engage a kind of behaviorist theory re schedules of reinforcement (e.g. re Harvard's B.F. Skinner, about whom I've blogged recently in three different blogs) to explain, for example, these three behaviors:

- photo sharing, much from social media, of mostly cat pictures, but pictures in general on smartphone computers, among mostly female musicians at Scottish Country Dancing on Monday evenings in Berkeley,

World University and School would like to inquire if Stanford Medicine and Law could create CC OpenCourseWare (like CC MIT OCW in 7 languages) in ~200 countries official languages for online WUaS Medical Schools with online teaching hospitals, and online Law Schools (perhaps bringing together here the 5-10 international Stanford law projects, under one World University and School umbrella)

(Scott MacLeod has been invited to give a Stanford MedicineX talk about this in April 2018).



Minute 2

In the WUaS forking process, A) World University and School (a 501 c 3) would like to inquire if Stanford could run the B) WUaS Corp (a general stock company) in ~200 countries and 7,099 living languages as academic markets, and for Stanford Law to send WUaS a check

As acting secretary and president of the WUaS Corporation (where Julian Dumitrascu in Romania is the CEO), the WUaS Corporation will schedule a Board Meeting to consider how best to allot WUaS Corp shares and minute this.

Concerning next week's class and your riffing with writing an introductory paragraph to your 5 page research paper, I could see specifically inquiring about how the Blockchain will be revolutionary within the context of the course, then how it might articulate with a cryptocurrency not only for financial exchanges - re the economy side of this course - but also for health data which will complicate things, - and also as part of an Universal Basic Income, where "universal" could be said to have a societal aspect to it (per the "society" focus of this course), and re major WUaS Universities in all ~200 countries' official languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - with law schools, law students, and computer science Ph.D. students to do all the coding of the blockchain ledger. "I want to argue / suggest that the blockchain ledger represents a further paradigm shift in the information age ... " is the kind of thesis I think is helpful in writing an academic paper, because it allows one to back this up with points / paragraphs / and evidence, say in 3-5 further paragraphs. But your research question may inform your argument in a very different way. And a good thesis (Castells' thinking is full of theses / arguments which are disputable) could be argued against ... or the evidence / points you back up your argument with, could support a very different thesis too - which makes for the art of writing a social science / economics/business paper. In some ways I'm looking for a well-reasoned (re logic questions) paper (and there are some 3-4 page papers here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm - which I wrote at UCSB some years ago, which are closely reasoned, some of which I could share with you, if that would be helpful, re the kind of paper I in this course am looking for).

Behaviorist theory & Operant conditioning


CURIOUS how to engage a kind of behaviorist theory re schedules of reinforcement (e.g. re Harvard's B.F. Skinner, about whom I've blogged about recently in three different blogs) to explain, for example, these three behaviors:

- photo sharing, much from social media, of mostly cat pictures, but pictures in general on smartphone computers, among mostly female musicians at Scottish Country Dancing on Monday evenings in Berkeley,

- warm hug between great long time friends also at SCD, musicians who were sitting next to each other, one female the other male

- photo sharing of grand daughter baby photos in utero on smartphone?


What would behaviorism say about this collection of behaviors - or could be extrapolated from to say / explain - say in terms of schedules of reinforcement?

Behaviorism re schedules of reinforcement can inform learning so profoundly ... but while I could hypothesize that the above pleasurable behaviors could be a kind of "grooming" in higher primate senses (how could we create experiments about this?), and Skinner used behaviorism to work with "delinquent" behavior, behaviorism isn't really a theory generalizable to the above phenomenon.
