Scottish Independence and currency questions, History, Identity, "The Scotsman" News' Articles about Independence, Alex Salmond on video

If you were Scotland and heading for independence with a vote in the British Isles in 2014 or beyond, which currency would you choose for Scotland's long term prosperity, - institutionally-wise, especially (e.g. exchange rate mechanism, UK banking regulations, etc.)?

a. British pounds' sterling (the keeping of which, against the Euro, has probably benefitted the U.K. in all those little currency exchange costs, for one)?

b. Euros and the benefits of one currency for trading in Europe, and lessen reliance on the English pound?

c. A Scottish currency of its own, and benefit from all those little currency exchange costs, but without the benefits of one currency for trading in Europe?

d. other

Scottish independence after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bannockburn - and "Scots Wha Hae" which is the title of a bagpipe tune and patriotic poem by beloved Scots' poet Robert Burns: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scots_Wha_Hae) and the Act of Union in 1707 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_Union_1707 also known as "Union of England and Scotland") all inform far-reaching, Scots' identity questions, for which this currency question is also significant.

Scots are saying in "The Scotsman" articles below they'll keep the pound and join the European Union, seeking an exemption for the EU requirement, which both the U.K. and Denmark now have.

See, too, Scottish Independence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_independence

Flower power: Manuel Castells' definition of counterculture, Engaged counterculture in this way in my UC Berkeley talk, "Naked, Virtual Harbin" book, New protest movements and viral media (from an UK digital anthropologist)

https://web.archive.org/web/20120324084130/http://www.english.illinois.edu/-people-/faculty/debaron/wolimages/flowerpower.jpg

I was just reading Manuel Castells this morning and came upon this definition of counterculture:

"Environmentalism has also nurtured some of the counter-cultures that sprang from the 1960s' and the 1970s' movements. By counter-culture, I understand the deliberate attempt to live according to norms different, and to some extent contradictory, from those institutionally enforced by society, and to oppose those institutions on the ground of alternative principles and beliefs"

(p. 174, Castells, 2004, "The Power of Identity," 2nd edition, Volume II of Castells' trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture," Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishing).

In the talk I gave at UC Berkeley on November 2, 2012, in the Anthropology department entitled -

Naked, Virtual Harbin:
An Anthropology of Erotisme and the Touristic Imaginaire

Abstract (6 minutes)
http://youtu.be/p8gur9SMPlw

Talk (1 hour 59 minutes)
http://youtu.be/op2W_V5xUtM

I engaged counterculture in this way : "But briefly, in this {Naked, Virtual Harbin} book, counterculture is a progressive de-reification or de-thingification of culture, with orientations toward freedom, protest, resistance and reversal, vis-a-vis those cultural processes influenced by modernity."

*

And to bring this into the present in another way, and digitally:

Flowers of Evolution: Out from our evolutionary soup of vast history, symbolically, what is consciousness and how does this function?, Philosophy_of_Language, Consciousness, Brain_and_Cognitive_Sciences, Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology), Relaxation response, Quaker Meeting

http://cdn.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/2007/fig_h2.jpg

C and L,

Looking forward out from our evolutionary soup of vast history, symbolically, what is consciousness and how does it function are very interesting questions, in terms of evolution, philosophy and brain / bodymind science, which we are broaching with ever more sophistication, even with the ongoing challenges of definition. (I tend toward the school of 'new mysterions' (e.g. Nagel and McGinn, for two) in doubting that we'll ever be able to ask and answer what consciousness is fully, because what consciousness is seems irreducible especially cross-species-wise - "What is it like to be a bat?").

Here are some related, wiki, subjects for further exploring this at World University and School, which is like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare:

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Philosophy_of_Language

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Consciousness

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Brain_and_Cognitive_Sciences

While I've broached the question of eliciting qualities of loving bliss neurophysiology in any number of qualities of bodymind experiences, with MDMA and musical experiences as two, significant, reference experiences which are replicable and get close to experiences of love in my book, to us Nonttheist Friends on this list a number of times, here again is a wiki, subject page at World University and School for further exploration of this:

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology)

N, I see eliciting loving bliss neurophysiologies as some of the best experiences of life, and as kinds of 'heavens,' metaphorically, and which would help a lot of people if we could learn better how to elicit this brain chemistry, naturally, in so many ways. What's the on/off switch, the 'cello bow stroke,' metaphorically, and / or where's the dial for eliciting loving bliss when and as we want, in so many qualities, varieties and intensities, are my main, current, questions about this. And the relaxation response and Quaker meeting help me find a kind of centering and attuning for further exploring this biology in unfolding creative ways.

What do you all think?

With f/Friendly greetings,
Scott

Rose: What problem is WUaS trying to solve in your language, Innovative Biological Engineering science, WUaS plans to become a first tier university, a MIT/Harvard of the internet, Networking with and coming into communication with the presidents of Harvard/ Faust, MIT/ Reif, Stanford/ Hennessey, Yale/ Salovey (incoming), Princeton/ Tilghman (outgoing) and Cambridge/ Sainsbury, - and perhaps a best university in Germany?

http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/scandocs/images/memoir15rose.png

Hi G,

Happy Thanksgiving weekend in Germany, and for your good suggestion for a Google + Hangout to generate conversation about the need for WUaS, or what problem is WUaS trying to solve in your language.

If people are interested in degrees from MIT, I think they'll be interested in free, Creative Commons' licensed, STEM-focused, MIT OCW-centric bachelor, Ph.D., I.B., law and M.D. degrees, and in many countries and languages ... and this could be a good proposition to focus such discussion in a hangout. Matriculating overachieving students (Germans, too) to the free, online, MIT-centric bachelor's degree course of study in English in 2014 is WUaS's focus presently. And while entrepreneurship is part of this focus, with our Business Plan, WUaS also plans to generate a worldwide, MIT-centric, knowledge-oriented conversation.

WUaS is also somewhat Quaker-informed in terms of making education available worldwide as a service, and especially good science education.

I enjoyed your video, - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWk6sLxQlN8 - and think you understand what Americans in particular are attuned to both in terms of surveys/studies, and cost focus, in offering opportunities for new science. I added the video to two WUaS pages, and right next to Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust's moderation of a panel on genetics at Harvard, on one page:

I also added your co-authored paper in WikiGenes - http://www.wikigenes.org/e/mesh/e/27630.html  - to some of the above WUaS pages.

I think President Drew Faust has a particular interest in Genetics and Genomics, - and as a historian of the American Civil War. Why not try to make contact / network with her?

WUaS plans to become a first tier university, a MIT/Harvard of the internet, and would like to come into communication with the presidents of Harvard/ Faust, MIT/ Reif, Stanford/ Hennessey, Yale/ Salovey (incoming), Princeton/ Tilghman (outgoing) and Cambridge/ Sainsbury and perhaps a best university in Germany (what would you suggest?) - especially vis-a-vis sharing of library resources, and similar exchanges.

The next Startup Boards' WUaS student Board business meetings are on December 1 and 15. And you're welcome to participate in the actual WUaS monthly business meeting on December 8th.

Best, Scott

California Red-legged Frog: WUaS into ALL other languages and countries with Spanish, for example, Translation, Bookstore/Computer store, So, in Spanish, for example, how to build on the Chinese course you're developing, for instruction in Chinese from Spanish, and then for all of MIT OCW at WUaS?

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2749/5840045028_e3166a2d5c_m.jpg

Juan,

In terms of MIT-centric WUaS in Spain, and Spanish-speaking lands, for example, there are a few focuses that could be helpful to think through together...

Letting people know about Free and MIT OCW-centric WUaS in Spanish,

1. Facilitating translation of Creative Commons licensed MIT-centric WUaS into Spanish, with something like Amara Subtitles +,

2. Letting people know about the Bookstore Computer store eventually -

eventually in Spanish for textbooks and books for WUAS courses

3. Building faculty and interactivity for eventual group video conferencing in, for example, Google + Hangouts, for teaching and learning

4. Teaching what you'd like at open, wiki WUaS

These are the steps for developing WUaS into other languages.

And in terms WUaS's Board, here are some wiki Subjects you expressed in ...

Volunteers' wiki subject page -

"To Do List" -

WUaS is beginning to develop first in United Nations' languages as well as in lingua francas in Africa.

So, in Spanish, for example, how to build on the Chinese course you're developing (building on this - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/foreign-languages-and-literatures/21f-101-chinese-i-regular-spring-2006/ ?), for instruction in Chinese from Spanish, and then for all of MIT OCW at WUaS?

World University and School, like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare, plans to be in all 7,413 + languages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - and 205 + countries - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - as open wiki schools, and also plans to offer free, online, MIT-centric bachelor, Ph.D., I.B., law and M.D. degrees, in many languages and countries. (Wikipedia by way of comparison is in 285 languages).

In many ways, World University and School is planning universal, MIT OCW-centric education, with people-to-people teaching and learning.

Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Dromedary: Accreditation and WUaS paying for students who don't finish their degrees, Accrediting in Germany and other countries?

Hi Scott!

Thanks for this great hangout. As said, you do a very promising project. It all depends on the right execution.
Thanks for the accreditation plan. I saw, that you have to pay for a defined number of students. My experience is that only a tiny fraction of registered student do really the course. I have no real statistics, but it might be less than 10%. How will this work, if you have to pay for accreditation on a per student base?

Have a nice weekend!

Best
G

Hi, G,

Thanks for for participating this morning in WUaS's 2nd Student Board Meeting in our Stanford 'Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship' course, and from Berlin - the 1st Student Board Meeting is accessible here ... http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm - and especially for adding so much to these WUaS Board conversations. WUaS seems still to be 'babystepping' along in terms of execution / executing our mission, and I'll be excited when the baby begins to run holding hands, let alone gets a little bigger than it is now.

In startup WUaS's seeking of overachieving undergraduate students, who might otherwise go to MIT, H.Y.P. Stanford, Cambridge, et al., one way WUaS will try to approach the question of attrition, is through a careful Admissions' process - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School. The more students who apply - and from Germany, too - the more likely we can choose students who say they'll complete the 32 required, MIT-centric, WUaS courses, and then do so, and then receive their bachelor's degree. And of the %7 or so who finished Sebastian Thrun's and Peter Norvig's 'Intro to A.I.' SINGLE course, 160,000 or so signed up by entering their emails ... and WUaS will probably require 32 courses. (I don't know the numbers in MIT professor and edX president Anant Agarwal's "Circuits and Electronics," but I think they are similar). Free and MIT, and online, on a comparative basis may be very compelling, but WUaS doesn't want to throw away monies due to attrition, and good, (online), support services (which are more jobs WUAS can hire for), may be part of the answer (paralleling a recent Reed College development).

Can you think of any foreign universities in Germany, who have accredited in Germany for equivalent degrees to a bachelor, Ph.D., I.B., law and M.D. degree? What are some of your insights into this process?

And I'm curious about your further thoughts about your Leukippos synthetic biology company and crowdsourcing, to develop this conversation, especially vis-a-vis eventual WUaS students, possibly?

Did you, by any chance, save the links from the chat area of the Google + group video hangout? (I closed that browser window too early, and would like to share them with people in an email).

Have a great weekend.

Best,
Scott

2.2 Finance

Treasurer's report for October 2012

b.

WUaS's $100,000 capital campaign for 2012

Getting the WUaS annual appeal letter in the mail this week, for WUaS's $100,000 capital campaign for 2012, and preparing for WUaS's $125,000 capital campaign for 2013 -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/$100,000_Capital_Campaign_at_World_University_and_School_for_2012 - and -

c.

WUaS's business plan is an endowment one

Our business plan is an endowment one, so fundraising, grant writing and networking with philanthropists - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Business_Plan - and with an online (and eventually on-the-ground) Bookstore / computer store (new and used) -http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS - first, as we begin to offer Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW High School-centric International Baccalaureate diplomas and CC MIT OCW-centric bachelor's in the 6 United Nations' languages plus Portuguese and Swahili probably, since they are both lingua francas in Africa. Amara subtitles will help crowdsource some of the MIT OCW and Yale OYC video courses' translation, as a start.

d.

Quaker bookstore with vendors, who have said they'd like to collaborate with WUaS, (and WUaS's board has said they would purchase probably Quickbooks POS v. 11 2013 with multistore as online bookstore software for many countries and languages eventually) to call together a few, online bookstore / computer store software companies with questions, before calling Quickbooks POS themselves with last questions before purchasing, then setting up WUaS's online bookstore, engaging the Quaker bookstore's inventory and vendor, in anticipating of selling textbooks etc..

2.3 Information Technology

a.

Wikidata / Wikibase update -

As World University and School moves from the Wikia wiki to Wikidata / Wikibase, WUaS will probably become an 'instance of Wikibase,' which is in development. Creative Commons' licensed Wikidata / Wikibase is currently under development by a core team of Wikimedians / Wikipedians in Europe, with Wikipedia's 285 languages in mind. (And I just learned that WUaS will probably become an 'instance of Wikibase' in Wikidata office hours only on Tuesday).

Whether free, MIT OCW-centric WUaS can facilitate application writing for Android and iPhone OS, et al., in many, many languages, is an item for future WUaS monthly, business meeting agendas.

2.5 Hiring planning

2.6 Fundraising

- looking for a new WUaS Board member to focus WUaS fundraising

2.7 Nominating committee

Seeking committee members, facilitators and recorders

2.8 Languages' committee

2.9 Accreditation committee

WUaS has talked with WASC senior in California for about 45 minutes, and is planning to accredit on MIT OCW, for the bachelor's degree (with WUaS's 1st matriculating class in 2014), and department by department, for this online, Creative Commons' licensed university and School. Ph.D. accreditation for first, online matriculating class beginning in 2015, will also be department, by department. WUaS is serious about accrediting well and thoroughly, with WASC to start, and then around the world, but we need to begin to scale for this. There's a workshop in April 2013 with WASC which WUaS is currently planning to attend.
