I'd like to find, or develop, a fascinating Open Course Ware course entitled
'Language and Sociocultural Anthropology,' and related courses,
and develop a 21st century linguistic turn in Anthropology -

Dear Friends,
While in Scotland (June – July 2003) I learned about John Dalton, a Quaker and a scientist who, when he died, was so appreciated (beloved) for his kindness (I read somewhere) that around 40,000 people and 100 carriages passed by his coffin in Manchester to pay their respects, - a worthwhile kind of fame.
While his scientific accomplishments at that time (late 1700s - early 1800s) were impressive (in meteorology, vision, atmosphere, and considered the 'father' of the atom – that matter is composed of the atomic weights of different elements - among other ideas; induction then into the French Academy of Sciences as one of eight foreign representatives), I'm attracted to the effects of his Quaker interests and upbringing - the cultural practices, ways of doing and thinking (analytically & compassion-wise), the traditions, and the shared understandings which inform the Society of Friends (unprogrammed Quakers) at their best.
What thinking about the Quaker and scientist John Dalton brings to mind for me about Quaker ways are the very open-ended and organic practices or leadings (remarkably sensitive and caring?) - that I sometimes liken to a kind of musical or theatrical improvisation - (waiting in silence with Friends ~ a kind of relaxation response {Benson 1972} vis-à-vis Quaker processes) and which can lead to inward and outward, indirect and straightforward realizations of love in its best sense - empathy; delight; sympathy; centered caring; tenderness; sensitivity; ineffable ecstasy; incredibly positive - potentially lifelong - feelings of connectedness; sublimity; kindness; “love in the air;” gentleness; an understanding of developing, mutual otherness; friendship; mirthful, playful freedom in mind, words and gestures; thoughtfulness; dating; cuddling/physical intimacy/sensuality (1-2 hours per day); making love (intimate and warm)~coitus; a delightful, “glowing” party; ongoing smile / sincere and charming affection / “flow” experiences (for “flow,” see Csikszentmihalyi’s “Flow: the Psychology of Optimal Experience” - 1993) with a community / network across generations; openness; generosity; coming closely in tune with good friends; fulsome trust; anticipatory, beneficial surprises; sweetness; nurture; receptivity {to love}; sharing; hail gladdening love; non-harming, altruistic engagement; acts of kindness ~ voluntarism; considerateness; cordiality; congeniality; collegiality; flourishing (viz. eudaimonia); warm, radiant fun; sociable, flirtatious, and gleeful inner and outer movement, which some people experience while dancing (e.g. unconditional~free-form dancing, New England contra-dancing, Scottish Country Dancing, Dances of Universal Peace~Sufi dancing, contact improvisational dance jams, etc.); having a ball with you; euphoric merriment; cherishing as well as feeling / being cherished; (love-related) passion; the numinous; a loving bliss economy~loving bliss indices {a way of measuring groups' affective neurophysiology, as a whole, linked with socially conscious, index, mutual funds}; old friends; an unburdened feeling of lightness of being; falling in love; the fun of raising / being with kids; cheeriness; positive psychology (viz. Iyengar's “Light on Yoga” and “Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health,” or a western, philosophical reading of Patañjali's eight limb yoga (it's very ascetic) as self/bodymind-regulating, biological, and social, reference concepts, that, with discernment, may well improve the 'fabric of life' for you, or, originating from a yoga perspective, Dean Ornish’s (1995) clinical, medical research, for example, that heart disease, the biggest cause of death presently in the United States (get your blood analyzed for risk factors?), and potentially many other conditions – e.g. he’s doing clinical trials presently on prostate cancer with positive preliminary results (2001), as well as possibly breast cancer - are reversible through lifestyle changes, especially a varied, delicious (Tucker / Katzen) and nutritionally-sound (Robertson) [Omega-3 fatty acids {for mood, heart disease, bone density, et al., - e.g. 1000 mg flax seed oil, 3-4 times per day with food}, protein {an unfertilized, organically-grown egg per day?} and a multivitamin for iron, vitamin B12, etc.], low-fat {extra virgin olive oil} grain-, vegetable-, legume {including soy bean products} -, and fruit- centered diet {and fat-free dairy/milk products}, - if at risk for heart disease, aim to eat less than 3 grams of fat {esp. trans and saturated fats, - (little) kids need a moderate amount of fat} per serving -; movement {a wide range,- some gentle and some vigorous}, e.g. 30 minutes of walking, biking, yoga asana, swimming, dancing, etc., per day; relaxation; and community, - studies have also shown red grapes, and the substance 'reversatrol' in red wine and grape juice to prevent heart disease (Wade 2006)) offer ways to balance / integrate some problematic aspects of these perspectives / processes.
So many of the ways one experiences life and the not-yet-clearly-understood processes of consciousness ^ thinking {or loving bliss viz. MDMA} (in an analytical, philosophical, knowledge-based sense) are shaped by the variable ways one sees and thinks about life (I think) (conceived of here as distinct from biological, economic, political, social, cultural and linguistic processes, and scientific methods) and aren't always under the control (agency) of the thinker / bodymind (viz. John Money 1988: 116, 118), but not totally out of control of the agent, either. (Philosophically and biologically, how does free, human agency {choice} – esp. intention - work causally in relation to consciousness / genius?) Sometimes I think to myself, why not focus on freeing love and center oneself / be present and wait in silence (when one isn't feeling or acting lovingly, for things change - or talk in a way which cultivates 'love' with friends) or sing, make music / art, write {poetry}, read, have a great deal of fun, do what you like & want, think, do fundamental research, dance with friends {honey}, or write a great book with friends or alone when one is 'in love,' which is what I'd like to do (in conjunction with taking care of making a living which, for hunter-gatherers, for example, might take 2 - 3 hours per day depending on the biogregion and which thus might represent the time needed today to make a living, given a change in economic conditions)? Quaker processes (among many) allow for the possibility to contemplate such opportunities and ways (and love), and then to realize them. I suppose there’s a method of dry, philosophical / analytical / hermeneutical (see Gadamer) / anthropological / phenomenological inquiry implicit here that I would like to follow logically in a number of directions, but in a way which gets to an experience of love as touched on above, and doesn’t get into the more negative aspects of love. How to produce / generate love (the embodied, neural correlates of the above, realized naturally) in large measure over time is a question that interests me. Generating mutual love is something I would not only like to think about but also do.
While one’s life can go in many directions (and few as well), the degree that one can shape these love~life processes allows the possibility that people, with friendly support, can cultivate, at least in some kind of artistic sense, some or all of these aspects of love. John Dalton’s thinking represents a far-reaching, scientific, paradigm shift, and his life moved in a number of interesting directions, - and people loved him.
I’m not sure whether I should share this with you, but I'll place it here anyway as they are interesting ideas / words and you might enjoy them. ;-)

Dear Friends,
While in Scotland (June – July 2003) I learned about John Dalton, a Quaker and a scientist who, when he died, was so appreciated (beloved) for his kindness (I read somewhere) that around 40,000 people and 100 carriages passed by his coffin in Manchester to pay their respects, - a worthwhile kind of fame.
While his scientific accomplishments at that time (late 1700s - early 1800s) were impressive (in meteorology, vision, atmosphere, and considered the 'father' of the atom – that matter is composed of the atomic weights of different elements - among other ideas; induction then into the French Academy of Sciences as one of eight foreign representatives), I'm attracted to the effects of his Quaker interests and upbringing - the cultural practices, ways of doing and thinking (analytically & compassion-wise), the traditions, and the shared understandings which inform the Society of Friends (unprogrammed Quakers) at their best.
What thinking about the Quaker and scientist John Dalton brings to mind for me about Quaker ways are the very open-ended and organic practices or leadings (remarkably sensitive and caring?) - that I sometimes liken to a kind of musical or theatrical improvisation - (waiting in silence with Friends ~ a kind of relaxation response {Benson 1972} vis-à-vis Quaker processes) and which can lead to inward and outward, indirect and straightforward realizations of love in its best sense - empathy; delight; sympathy; centered caring; tenderness; sensitivity; ineffable ecstasy; incredibly positive - potentially lifelong - feelings of connectedness; sublimity; kindness; “love in the air;” gentleness; an understanding of developing, mutual otherness; friendship; mirthful, playful freedom in mind, words and gestures; thoughtfulness; dating; cuddling/physical intimacy/sensuality (1-2 hours per day); making love (intimate and warm)~coitus; a delightful, “glowing” party; ongoing smile / sincere and charming affection / “flow” experiences (for “flow,” see Csikszentmihalyi’s “Flow: the Psychology of Optimal Experience” - 1993) with a community / network across generations; openness; generosity; coming closely in tune with good friends; fulsome trust; anticipatory, beneficial surprises; sweetness; nurture; receptivity {to love}; sharing; hail gladdening love; non-harming, altruistic engagement; acts of kindness ~ voluntarism; considerateness; cordiality; congeniality; collegiality; flourishing (viz. eudaimonia); warm, radiant fun; sociable, flirtatious, and gleeful inner and outer movement, which some people experience while dancing (e.g. unconditional~free-form dancing, New England contra-dancing, Scottish Country Dancing, Dances of Universal Peace~Sufi dancing, contact improvisational dance jams, etc.); having a ball with you; euphoric merriment; cherishing as well as feeling / being cherished; (love-related) passion; the numinous; a loving bliss economy~loving bliss indices {a way of measuring groups' affective neurophysiology, as a whole, linked with socially conscious, index, mutual funds}; old friends; an unburdened feeling of lightness of being; falling in love; the fun of raising / being with kids; cheeriness; positive psychology (viz. For the languages and countries,
WUaS's approach is to build gradually using the current Wikia.com,
and eventually move to,
and develop,
the most appropriate wiki technologies,
(that include usability on handheld phone computers - e.g. NYT's mobile articles - potentially 5 billion),
- perhaps MediaWiki.
The openness of wiki is important, because it allows all of us to explore ways to improve education by teaching & learning freely on the web.

Thanks for the heads up to Wilson's "Darwin's Cathedral" - which is also here at the Religious Studies's subject at World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Religious_Studies, with other interesting, rigorous, related, evolutionary biological approaches to explaining religion, among other resources. I found Scott Atran's "In God's We Trust: The Evolutionary Landscape of Religion" also edifying. He uses the metaphor of landscape to offer an in-depth, evolutionary biological, interpretation of religion and its widespreadness (and why humans' seem to be 'trip-wired' for the 'God' word, for example), partly because the language of evolutionary biological knowledge, from his perspective, led him to metaphor - he couldn't find more, or better, scientific, or anthropological, language (he's a cognitive anthropologist). I'm so glad we're living in a time when such evolutionary biological approaches to explaining religion are emerging, but I think there's a LOT of potential for creative, biological thinking ahead.
I still see a gulf between evolutionary biology giving rise to 3-100 million species (lots of genetic replication and speciation, to say the least) and the sociocultural processes that seem to inform religion the 7-8 great religions of, say, Huston Smith's "Religions of Man," who also greatly appreciates the significance of psychedelics vis-a-vis religion (see Don Lattin's 'The Harvard Psychedelic Club," for example, who was the religion and spirituality editor at the SF Chronicle for around 2 decades ... somehow psychedelics are particularly a SF Bay Area spiritual thing :). Although we're just beginning to tease out sociocultural processes vis-a-vis evolutionary biology, I think we (scientifically minded) have a long way to go to offer convincing accounts (especially of the myriad of negative aspects in religion), even given the 'beginning science of religion' books at WUaS Religious Studies' subject, for example. And memes (replicating, cultural 'units') are very logical, socioculturally, in a sense, to complement the genetic success of 3-100 million species over some 3.5 billion years.
To welcome and cultivate the 'love' aspect, which I see as a part of religion, in terms of other social relatednesses, or connectednesses, together with its warm, affective qualities of personalization, and community, seems possible without the words above (God, worship, religion, spirituality, soul, etc.) which I find problematic (but not everybody does), seems to be something nontheist Friends may be exploring, in language, in part. I'm certainly interested in questions of love, and its experience. Perhaps this can lead to kinds of nontheistically Friendly biological, tenderizing, and sympathies.

Bar-tailed Godwit: Nontheist Friends, Evolutionary biology, Culture, Loving bliss, Problems of religious words for nontheists
Hi K, and nontheist Friends,
I think of the 'evolutionary biological' here in terms of 3-100 million species, (and evolution by natural selection, genetic replication, and adaptation, for example), of which humans are one (of around 376) higher primate species, dating back millions of generations. Evolutionary biology provides the context in which I seek to understand much human behavior, and nontheistic Friends, in part. However, evolutionary biology and culture seem pretty far apart from each other, conceptually, especially for understanding nontheistic Friends, and much of what the rest of 7 billion of us do, in the context of culture.
By culture, I mean kinds of discourse (context, milieu), including language use and possibilities, as well as identity (e.g. I see nontheist Friends as an expression of cultural identity, vis-a-vis Quakers).
Given the biology of all species, I find words like 'God,' 'divine,' 'worship,' 'religious,' 'spirit,' 'soul,' 'ministry,' and 'spiritual' curious, somewhat problematic, and relatively recent in an evolutionary biological sense (writing may have begun about 5500 years ago, for example). As a friendly atheist, I'm wary of, and stay away, from such words, in general.
Huston Smith's "The Religions of Man" sympathetically characterizes 7-8 great religions, in a form of cultural comparison, but as an atheistic f/Friend, I continue to be surprised by religions' widespread-ness, even though religion has lessened in significance with modernity and reason (e.g. since the printing press, the Enlightenment and Industrializations and the information technology revolution, that is, in Modernity), for the better, I think. I'm also concerned about/worry about religions' fantasy aspect (the idea of God, for example). I'm a little Swedish in this sense.
I find myself thinking through what might be parallel and better language (language which works for me) vis-a-vis the unprogrammed Society of Friends, and nontheist f/Friends.
Loving bliss neurophysiology vis-a-vis the drug Ecstasy - methylene dioxy meth amphetamine - for example, is one quality of affective euphoria the bodymind can experience, and listening to Mozart, Bach and the Grateful Dead, for me, offer others. I've written five letters partly about this here - http://scottmacleod.com/links.htm, as well. That ecstasy, love, and bliss are biological, with MDMA as a reference experience, fascinates me, - and all emerging, as I see it, out of evolutionary biology. As a focus of inquiry, I continue to explore how to elicit love, and loving bliss, neurophysiology in a variety of ways, naturally.
Culturally, I also find fascinating India's 'connectedness,' and experience this sort of thing, as well, among Friends, at times. Serendipity and synchronicity are fascinating phenomena, which I've written about in this blog (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com) before, especially in relation to Harbin Hot Springs, and in India, also; I see such fascinating, and often salutary, phenomena, to be expressions of culture, language and practice, often age-old, and with deep linguistic roots.
In nontheistically Friendly silent meeting, I see centering occurring in the silence through a kind of de facto relaxation response: http://www.relaxationresponse.org/steps, which emerges with Friends in England from the 1650s on, in an unique way, in this interpretation. Perhaps this group relaxation response facilitated a kind of bonding, in conjunction with the religious language of early Friends, and this networking, together, with Friends' reputation for integrity, in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, led to Friends' growth, and prosperity. I see Friendly community as another instance of troopbondage. (Concerning troopbondage, see John Money's 'Concepts of Determinism' section in his 1988 book "Gay, Straight and In-Between: The Sexology of Erotic Orientation," published by Oxford University Press - http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm). This makes sense to me in relation to the sensible idea that we're human primates.
I share your view that it is 'truth through experience' that informs aspects of Quaker thinking and practice, but I find some of such words as - 'God,' 'divine,' 'worship,' 'religious,' and 'spiritual,' etc. - to be possibly untruthful forms of fantasy, or masks to truth, and certainly language which can obscure evolutionary-informed understands of the natural world, as well as bodyminds. {Personally, I enjoy exploring the wonders of bliss, love, music, poetry and the natural world}. I'm glad there's individualism and tolerance among nontheist Friends, thus leading to an exploration of a variety of meanings of such words, as your etymology, in a recent email to the NTF email list, of the Norse word 'worschippe' suggests. I appreciate nontheistic Friends' ongoing conversation as expressions of truthfulness, in that NTFs are centering conversationally around the 'nontheism' word to explore Quaker-related possibilities, in the context of a 350 year trajectory of Quakerism.

Polar bear cubs: I'm sympathetic with the thesis of Dawkin's "The God Delusion," Atheist Friends, Memes, and Evolutionary Biology

I'm sympathetic with the thesis of Dawkin's "The God Delusion" -
"In The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion, which he defines as a persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictory evidence. He is sympathetic to Robert Pirsig's statement in Lila that "when one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_God_Delusion).
I also appreciate, particularly, the clarity of this title, based on both reason and evolutionary biology. It's amazing to me that 150 or so years after Darwin's writings, that some people find such a title and thesis so problematic.
Is the 'God' or the 'divine' meme ('replicating, cultural unit') to blame, or the cause? (Dawkin's coined the word 'meme' in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene").
Long live evolutionary biology (all 3-100 million species), and nontheistic friends, and conversations about life and nontheism :)

Diamond dove's natural habitat: AFSC, Bagpiping, Education, and People-to-people Teaching and Learning

Thanks for making the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) vigil/protest happen so nicely today in front of the Oakland Federal Building.
I'm glad to have participated, and thanks, too, for the invitation to bagpipe. Such multicultural, pro-people gatherings are quite salutary in their idea-sharing for the public good, and even as a kind of community service (patriotism, in a best sense?).
Bagpiping can add an unique voice to such demonstrations. (And please let folks know that I pipe for weddings, funerals and events for a living - http://scottmacleod.com/piping.htm).
Since so many of the messages today were about education, and people-to-people communication, I would have loved to have spoken briefly about World University and School, but we ran out of time. I'm looking for ways, too, to get the word out, and build a community of great teachers/editors/contributors ('edit this page' - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com) to make open teaching and learning very helpful to people, as well as to make it rock (flourish).
Let's explore how we might further articulate AFSC - with so much education-for-the-people focus today - and World University and School, which is free, highest quality, open and people-to-people oriented.

In this ethnography of 400 years in the future, people llive in the valley of the Kesh (what is now the Napa valley) and the oceans have risen, (and there are nuclear hot/dead spots around the world)
... Kesh life is both beautiful and close to the earth.
The book is also a novella with poetry, music (the music of the Kesh in audio tape accompanied one edition), and insight with beauty.

Colca Canyon: Connecting Harbin's buildings and art with Harbin's valley and property, Interpreting them in the context of the natural
Harbin ethnography:

While I'm not an architectural historian, I would call all of this art, and these structures, and Harbin places, vernacular art and architecture, meaning here emerging from place and Harbin's local codes, ethnographically-read, and influenced significantly by both '60s thinking and Harbin's vision.
When I connect Harbin's buildings and art with Harbin's valley and property, and interpret them, in the context of the natural, and even as a kind of people-centric, living, organic, artistic, building and growth process, I suggest that this connection between Harbin 'builds' and Harbin's nature – Harbin as place – is an ongoing expression of counterculture, emerging from the 1960s, relating to Harbin's unique topography and lay of the land, and, especially, its waters. Harbin has built all around these geothermally-heated underground water, pools of water, waterfalls, rain, and rivers and creeks in the wet season, and its valley, and enfolded into an unfolding Harbin vision, - which waters then flow away at the low end of the Harbin property, eventually to the sea. These builds and artistic objects each become a living instance of the Harbin experience, and of what all the folks who have come through the gate at Heart Consciousness Church have created. It's specifically this connectedness of 'builds' and 'designed' objects to land, that gives form to the possibilities for, in my experience, heightened experiences of release and enjoyment, and of alternative, New Age delights, in the Harbin pools and at Harbin, as a whole.

Geothermal energy from the earth: Harbin as place - Buildings and Art - How it Happens
Harbin ethnography:
... While not built by Heart Consciousness Church, Harbin has made numerous improvements to them (first built in … ) from their initial, run down and dilapidated states in 1972, to make them ongoingly rustic.
So all of this building occurred when Harbin's M.D.s (managing directors), but significantly when Harbin residents, especially J.A., in recent years, decided to develop it further, especially by making it beautiful, and collaborating with specific Harbin residents with unique vision and skills. Most of the builds and art at Harbin are developed from within HCC itself (Boellstorff 2008:97), as a kind of organic process, itself. Generally, J.A. and other residents did this while residing at, or spending much time, on Harbin property itself. Other Harbin residents certainly participated and also might watch, learn on the job, teach each other, or figure it out anew on their own. Harbin's artistic and artisanal counterculture is quite rich. Harbinites know how to recycle, and there have been enough financial resources, at least a times, to build the Harbin Conference Center in the early 1980s, the Harbin Domes in the early 2000s(?), the Harbin Temple (which was completed in 2005), the Harbin Flow Art-Walkway (early 2000s) as well as remodel structures, build the Harbin Market, and so much more building. It's especially the art at Harbin, as expression of place and milieu, that I find so fascinating. It's fluid, reflects the pools, and Harbin's countercultural thinking. There's especially a lot of fascinating artistic details around these days. It's actually a flourishing time for art at Harbin, and it seems like this will only continue. I looked into the valley
and saw bliss,
in Napa,
upon leaving Harbin, for a spell.
It's the light on the dormant vineyards,
the wild hills just behind,
the Dead on the sound system,
the Omega 3s from flax,
and the driving ...
O, Napa and Harbin.
Things are mellow,
there's jamming in the air,
and I was wondering,
just a little bit ago,
while in the pool, warm,
whether the Harbin pool area itself
is a human, visual, Bonobos
forest-in-the-pool thing, -
erotically, yes.
Are we all left-bank, sapien primates,
rocking out, Bonobo-wise,
on Harbins's clothing-optional-ness, -
such space-releasing wonders, -
the women, especially?
Have we learned,
just a little,
to return
to the freedom
of natural attraction,
while softening in the warm, clean,

Eagle's Aerie: The redwood Sleeping Deck was built in 1985 at Harbin, Like an eagle's aerie, for humans, with wondro

... Each of these decks is like a little glade in the forest for sunbathing, in general, though, they are free from the detritus of the forest floor, and elevated, with views.
The redwood Sleeping Deck was built in 1985. It's kind of like an eagle's aerie, for humans, with wondrous views. People can sleep on pads and sleeping bags there, or just hang out in the sun. There's a long, spacious wooden bench along its hill-side, (abutting the village path), on which people can sleep, although I haven't often seen this. I've slept, or camped out, on the redwood deck a lot over the years I've been coming to Harbin. It's almost a perfect camping place, because it's close to the pools and the community kitchen, and its high, dry, and has beautiful views and clean air. This deck has a waist high railing, and along the eastern side of the deck, people are sheltered from the early morning sun; in the corner of the deck on the eastern side and near the hill, is a lovely, small conifer (a white pine or something), which needles create a nice canopy under which to sleep. Its colorfulness at times, with sleeping gear strewn all around, sometimes reminds me of Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 (of which I've only seen photos; for example – http://).The sleeping deck is elevated and located right at the beginning of the village path, on which you can walk to a kind of sleepy village area, possibly a mile away, where some residents live in little houses; this village somehow feels unfinished, and is directly across a creek from the Harbin warehouse. The dirt path from the pool area, which is mostly cement and decking material, and walkable - without getting your bare feet dirty - and also, therefore, the pool-side cafe, which is at the eastern end of the pool area (Fig. ), and the redwood sleeping deck, may lessen the number of people coming from the pool area to the sleeping deck, by just a little. While Harbin does continue to build and add things - slowly and in a kind of organic hippy way - their not having paved this roughly 25 meter stretch of earthen path, is another example of the choices it makes about place, and the people who visit Harbin. Social theory is a broad field. As a practicing anthropologist (I'm writing an actual / virtual ethnography of Harbin Hot Springs in northern California - http://www.harbin.org), I (can) see social theory in anthropology to be an interpretive practice of a cultural milieu through participant observation.
Anthropology has deep roots in cultural relativism's comparative approach to questions of 'cultural' difference, which has long cast questions of bigotry into question, by offering approaches for us to learn about others and ourselves, through anthropological kinds of immersion in the lives of others, and sharing of such knowledge representationally in media.
I find Friends / Quakers have historically recast questions of bigotry through a kind of experiential code of seeing the light in everyone, often formulated in variations on "There is that of God in everyone" language.
I wonder how nontheistic Friends might nontheistically create anew, vis-a-vis this historical Friendly code. I understand some of us as engaging in a kind of nontheistic parallelism with much Quaker code, as approach or method - mostly online in email, but also in gatherings and publications - where Friendly language is a basis. But nontheistic Friends also seem, as a kind of method, to create anew through divergent yet unifying tendencies with Quaker process, expressed here in words, and spanning continents.
Might we engage the interpretive practices of social theory vis-a-vis nontheistic Friends to suggest "there is that of Friendly atheists, or nontheistic f/Friends, in everyone"? (I personally draw on the primate record in my social theory interpretations). In the process we might transform bigotry in nontheistically friendly ways. There is that of the nontheist Friend not only in the 7 billion people on the planet, but also in the two species of chimpanzees, two species of orangutans, etc. (Of course, there may not be, as well).
As nontheistic friends, we may create our own 'subculture,' or identity, in a sense, in the U.S., 'within' - sociologically - modern U.S. society which includes the elements you mention (New Deal social and economic policies, and with agency/choice, and via information technologies), but also including aspects of caring and progressive thought (e.g. approaches to peace, anti-war activism, social justic and nonharming ... ) - in my experience. This ongoing creative generation of nontheistic language is thus open-ended, and capable of developing new responses and language to the problematics of bigotry, (and even Quakerism?), for example, but furthers, too, developing continuing networks and community within the Society of Friends, as a whole.
