Dolphin: New, 'Suzuki Method,' wiki, subject page at World University and School, Suzuki instruments: Bass, Cello, Guitar, Flute, Harp, Mandolin, Organ, Piano, Recorder, Viola, Violin, Voice, many of which are new wiki subject pages at WUaS

Hi R,

Here's a new wiki subject page at World University and School for Suzuki Method - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Suzuki_Method.

I hope you're having a good summer. I just came across these items from the Suzuki method (now in around 10 instruments - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_method - read the whole Wikipedia entry if you can), which I think you'd find germane for bagpiping:

"The central belief of Suzuki, based on his language acquisition theories, is that all people can (and will) learn from their environment. The essential components of his method spring from the desire to create the "right environment" for learning music (he believed that this positive environment would also help to foster excellent character in every student). These components include:

Saturation in the musical community, including attendance at local concerts of classical music, exposure to and friendship with other music students, and listening to music performed by "artists" (professional classical musicians of high caliber) in the home every day (starting before birth if possible).

Deliberate avoidance of musical aptitude tests or "auditions" to begin music study. Suzuki firmly believed that teachers who test for musical aptitude before taking students, or teachers who look only for "talented" students, are limiting themselves to people who have already started their music education. Just as every child is expected to learn their native language, Suzuki expected every child to be able to learn to play music well when they were surrounded with a musical environment from infancy. (This does not preclude auditions for public performances).

Emphasis on playing from a very young age, sometimes beginning formal instruction between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. (See Technique).

Using well trained teachers, preferably also trained in using the Suzuki materials and philosophy. Suzuki Associations all over the world offer ongoing teacher-training programs to prospective and continuing Suzuki teachers. A basic competency as a performer was recently made mandatory for all teachers in the American Association; the holding of a music degree is not required.

In the beginning, learning music by ear is emphasized over reading musical notation. This follows Suzuki's observation that in language acquisition, a child learns to speak before learning to read. Related to this, memorization of all solo repertoire is expected, even after a student begins to use sheet music as a tool to learn new pieces. There is no formal plan or prescribed materials for introducing music theory & reading into the curriculum; this is left to the judgement of the teacher.

The method also encourages, in addition to individual playing, regular playing in groups (including playing in unison).

Retaining and reviewing every piece of music ever learned on a regular basis, in order to raise technical and musical ability. Review pieces, along with "preview" parts of music a student is yet to learn, are often used in creative ways to take the place of the more traditional etude books.

Traditional etudes and technical studies are not used in the beginning stages, which focus almost exclusively on a set of performance pieces.

Frequent public performance, so that performing is natural and enjoyable."

Let's review more of the tunes from the Green Book, and try to perform a little more.

I hope you're having a good summer.

Regards,
Scott

Sierra Nevada Foothills, California: Interns and WUaS, Accreditation, Quaker-informed business process, Online MIT in all languages and countries, Especially for overachieving students, while remaining open as wiki for teaching and learning between everyone

http://www.bergoiata.org/fe/trees/Sierra%20Nevada%20Foothills,%20California.jpg

World University and School is a big project (planned for 3,000-8,000 languages and around 200 countries for free degrees; Wikipedia is in around 284 languages, by way of comparison) so getting out the word and connecting with some of Wikidata's core developers, for example, makes sense. WUaS incorporated in 2010 and got 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status in 2011.

WUaS is a wiki-aggregator of free, open educational resources, where people can teach to each other. WUaS would like to create free, online, Creative Commons' licensed, bachelor, Ph.D., law and MD degrees (in many countries, too, eventually), accrediting on MIT OCW, as well, but haven't yet begun to hire interns -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Internship_Program_at_World_University_and_School.

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Intern_positions

*

WUaS plans to accredit formally in California with the same organization that accredits Stanford and Berkeley, as well as, for example, the Quaker, gap, high school, Woolman semester in the Sierra foothills. WUaS is using Quaker business process as we develop and scale; we're seeking to become a kind of online MIT in all languages and countries, especially for overachieving students, while remaining open as wiki for teaching and learning to everyone.

Accreditation at the Ph.d. / graduate level occurs with individual professional associations (e.g. in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and other STEM subjects, Anthropology, etc. - all of which will be somewhat costly).

Polar bear on melting ice: Evidence for the relationship between parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere and hot, summer temperatures, in the aggregate?

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2012/05/31/science/bear/bear-blog480.jpg

... wondering what the evidence is for the relationship between parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere

and hot, summer temperatures, in the aggregate,

over, say, the last 50 years ...

In other words, if the current ppm is around 390,

and 350 ppm could mean cooler, summer temperatures

(like in the 1970s on Cuttyhunk MA, in the summer?),

how do we get there,

and how can we find the academic papers that show this relationship,

given the complexity of climate science?

("To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million ("ppm")to below 350 ppm. But 350 is more than a number—it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet." from http://www.350.org/ ) ...

Zebra Longwing Butterfly: Here's a further link about Quakers and Humanism, Nontheist Friends, Humanist Society

http://stuffy.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/attachment/image/4fa128b8d730701866000001/slideshow_1335961290_4096407.jpg

Welcome, B,

Here's a further link about Quakers and Humanism - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanist_%28magazine%29#Humanist_Society - in interesting entry about Humanism in Wikipedia.

I think it was ZA (who may no longer be on this list) who added the parts about Humanism and Friends in the Wikipedia "Nontheist Friends" entry, as well as some specific individuals - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Friend - which I began on 21 June 2007 ... seems long ago. Z has also written some about humanism and NTFs in years' past in this list, and I found his emails enjoyable and insightful.

I see a lot of overlap, yet, as I see things, it's the specific NTF history in these emails that perhaps defines some of the many differences between NTFs and Humanist, in ways similar perhaps to the way Quakers themselves can look to their own 350 year history to define their specific trajectory of caring, meeting and business meeting, organizations such as AFSC, plus so much more. This list has returned often to examining the significance of the word nontheism over the years, and in a Quaker / f/Friendly context, in my view, and this may be a key starting difference. And this word has come to be significant in the NTF groups' unfolding, vis-a-vis Humanism, and many other similar words. Other people's thoughts about this in this unfolding conversation?

Friendly greetings,
Scott

Hi B and welcome to the group!

The Humanist Society (of Friends) did emerge from Quakers, but has since dropped "Friends" from their name. You can read more here: http://humanist-society.org/about/

The difference between generic humanists and nontheist Quakers is that Quaker have this funny habit of sitting in nearly total silence in a group for about an hour each Sunday. Explaining why we do this, and most generic humanists don't, is where the fun really begins!

I am a new subscriber to the NTF Discussion list, tlooking for input which would provide some clarification.   I have always considered myself to be a Humanist.  When I spoke to my husband about my intention to explore Nontheistic quakerism, he asked what was the difference between NTF and
Humanism. I had to admit that I was uncertain.  I believe there is a
humanist group in the U.S. calling itself Humanist Friends.  I would
appreciate some of your thoughts.

Looking for a new computer? ... I'd pick from the top of the list, comparing "CNET Reviews" - http://reviews.cnet.com/ - with PC Mag reviews - http://www.pcmag.com/reviews - with "All Things' Digital" reviews - http://allthingsd.com/ ... as well as other comparative and objective reviews, like Consumer Reports http://www.consumerreports.org/ (online by subscription) ... Wild otters play: Watsu - water shiatsu - history, Watsu, wiki subject page (at WUaS)

http://www.discoverwildlife.com/sites/default/files/images/wild-otters-playing-in-the-sun-jane-adams.preview.jpg

"In the early 1980s Harold Dull, ((former) director of the Harbin School of Shiatsu and Massage in northern California), began to apply the stretches and moves of Zen Shiatsu in warm water. In the years since, with the help of countless others in classes, clinics and spas around the world, Watsu has evolved into a leading edge Aquatic Therapy. It has also served as a source of inspiration and impetus for several other forms of water therapy, which have developed either along side or directly out of the 'Watsu experience'. Three of the most prominent forms are Waterdance, Healing Dance, and Jahara Technique." (http://www.watsu.org.nz/index.php?page=history-of-watsu)

Searching for Bonobo in Congo: F/friends, Interested in Bonobos, friends and peace-issues?

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7141/6734798891_f3d16932c1.jpg

F/friends,

Interested in Bonobos, friends and peace-issues?

I'd recommend de Waal's book "Bonobos," the first chapter of which you'll find on the WUaS Bonobo chimpanzee page below. And here's a recent email of mine to this nontheist Friends' email list, which I added to my blog -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/06/double-helix-thoughts-about-evolution.html. I've added other emails to this NtF list with thoughts about what NtFs might learn from Bonobo here (haven't  explored vice versa yet) here - http://scott/-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Bonobo%20chimpanzees - and here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/nontheist%20Friend. And here's World University and School's Bonobo chimpanzee page for further (somewhat academic) idea sharing, including videos, about Bonobos - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bonobo_chimpanzee. It's the peace aspect of Bonobos - no known fatalities among them - emerging via evolution by natural selection which I find so relevant for Friends, and which I hope Quakers and NtFs might even learn from.

Is their 'peaceable kingdom' (the Congo isn't these days - it's a democratic republic with a fair amount of violence - perhaps WUaS could help lessen this) because of their sexuality?

With f/Friendly greetings, Scott

Very glad to see the new book "Networked: The New Social Operating System," Added this book to Network Society, Internet Studies, and 'Society, Technology and Science,' Hi, Association of Internet Researchers

B and L, (June 30, 2012)

Great and thanks.

I added this

Rainie, Lee and Barry Wellman. 2012. Networked: The New Social Operating System. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press.

as reference to the following World University and School (which is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW with free degrees planned for a first, matriculating, online, Bachelor's degree class in 2014, accrediting on MIT OCW in CA), wiki subjects:

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Network_Society and
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Internet_Studies and
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Society,_Technology_and_Science
...

I'll look to use it in the related course I teach, as well.

Thank you for writing this,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Just looked at your links... Could you contextualize these a bit? How long do these courses run? Surely not a single semester with all the readings assigned, right?
Thanks,

Hi, B.B. and Association of Internet Researchers,

WUaS has two wings (http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2011/07/overview-of-wuas-world-university-and.html).

One is free, online, MIT-centric degrees, - accrediting on MIT OCW. While this is an unfolding process, WUaS would like this to be taught by edX (MITx / HarvardX) professors beginning in 2014, if at all possible, teaching with MIT OCW courses, or similar, in spaces like Google + video hangouts (using the Conference Method), for free degrees, with WUaS accrediting on MIT OCW in California. WUaS would like to attract overachieving students, who might otherwise go to MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Cambridge, for example. Free, students would still pay for books, and living expenses, and probably live in the same room from which they attended high school, studying over four years through something like 32 courses for the undergraduate degree. The professor would decide what was assigned, - and WUaS seeks to develop a high standard as an accredited, online university. WUaS would like to become a kind of online MIT, and potentially - a huge vision and process - in all 3,000-8,000 languages and 200 countries; Wikipedia is in 284 languages, by way of comparison. Like MIT's classes, the courses beginning in autumn 2014 would run for around 15 weeks.

The other wing is open people-to-people teaching, as a wiki. Someone, for example, could teach to their web camera (e.g. Sal Khan), or add a new subject, and share a reference, moving toward interactivity. Here you could teach a course or a 3 minute video (which so many people are already doing), post it, and WUaS would aggregate such.

(WUaS is also planning an online Music School - eventually in all languages / all instruments, as wiki pages, to start, - with collaborative, real time, music making. We'll have to move beyond the present lag in the internet, for this. Here are the beginnings of this -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School - with jamming and improvisation possibilities, especially. And here are some Music Playing Spaces happening already - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2012/06/music-playing-spaces-on-wednesdays-and.html ).

WUaS would like faculty and graduate students to steward specific, wiki, WUaS 'Subject' pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - as well as the other main WUaS pages and focuses, which you'll find here - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2012/02/three-main-it-foci-at-world-university.html.

This is some context: MIT OCW is the center of WUaS's academics, with free bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D., degrees planned, seeking overachievers (applying just as students would for other U.S. universities), for an internet-centric university and school.

All the best,
Scott

BB:

Thanks for indulging my curiosity, Scott. But the reading list for each wiki course is not limited to a single semester, I would think. That's a lot of reading :)

Scott:

Each wiki, WUaS, Subject page would indeed involve a lot of reading :)

I started piping for

I started piping for

I started piping for
that little gaff-rigged yacht,
with brown foresail,
and a greenhouse for a cabin,
as it sailed into the pond
of Cuttyhunk,
past the Alert dock -

it  was something about
its funkiness and freedom -
looking like a Chinese junk,
with a hippy woman
at its helm -
which inspired me to play.

Out, solo-sailing,
free and exploring,
I wanted to make music -
to bagpipe -
with its music
as it sailed in,
so I started to play,
and she smiled, and waved
from her craft,
holding her course
into this harbor
to anchor.

I had been playing just earlier,
awaiting the Alert ferry,
to pipe it in,
with old friends aboard.

The ferry came in,
the music happened, -
piping can soar, -
and in the melee of
people getting off,
communitas happens
on Cuttyhunk, at
ferry arrivals.
