White faced saki: "Can MOOCs and Universities Co-Exist ?" ... and the "commodity empire," What WUaS is about in reply to Anabel's inquiries, Helping the Developing World by planning to offer MIT OCW-centric online degrees in most countries

Can MOOCs and Universities Co-Exist ? ... and the "commodity empire"

Thanks, Heartsong ...

CC WUaS is CC MIT OCW-centric focused for its planned multi-lingual STEM-centric degree side ...

and CC Wiki focused for its people-to-people open teaching and learning planned for all 7000 + languages' side ...

CC - Creative Commons' licensed - is an interesting form of new law in the commodity-empire ...

hopefully WUaS students, teachers and learners who don't want the planned free degrees will explore a lot in the open wiki side ...

if only this open education side were around when you were studying and taking detours ...

lots of fascinating detour possibilities in the wiki WUaS main Subjects' page for example ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects

(You might be able to Google the WSJ journal article if interested ... )

WUaS allows all of us who want to to create learning for those who want it ...

lots of limbo and detour learnings, if that's what one wants, - and all potentially edifying especially ...

Scott

The first link below led me to the Title quest [for knowledge]  : Can MOOCs and Universities Co-Exist ? ... then the" line-leader "  , led me to "the commodity-empire" 'get this subscription ' [Price $12...] a detour from the Knowledge-Trail ] ... detouring into another labyrinth pseudo-laminated with extra-curricular mind-spaghetti ...
That was the actual academic-detour that entangled me in my academic career.  A lot of side-shows called learning knowledge, at the "Universities" of the commodity-empire.
With a "Hand-held"... Knowledge is empowering the "Student-of-Knowledge" to click him/er-self beyond the Limbo-campus of so-called University-course-curriculum.

To give you an idea of how wiki World University and School works on its wiki side, people can wiki add such resources as the article above to various WUaS subjects as open teaching and learning resources, eg here -

Education#World University and School Links
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Education#World_University_and_School_Links

Courses
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses

I'll add the paper above.

Or you could start a Google Hangout yourself and teach to it, and add it to WUaS.

See the links in the Education links' section for further resources concerning your particular interests.

On the degree side, WUaS is MIT OCW-centric.

In addition, WUaS would like to become accredited in all countries - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - which include the developing world, of course, and begin to offer online MIT OCW-centric university and high school degrees.

With very best wishes,
Scott

Hi Anabel,

Thanks ... have added you to WUaS's monthly email list. Would you like to be on the sporadic one, as well, with 2- 20 emails per week? What in particular are you interested in? Would you like to volunteer to do something at World University and School?

Cheers,
Scott

Eld's deer: First executive director at WUaS?, Scaling Up World University and School, Scaling and Hiring Challenge, Mindset vs. Footprint, 'Catholicism' vs. 'Buddhism (but really unprogrammed Ffriendly/Quaker), Hot Cause & Cool Solution - Universal Education, Cutting Cognitive Load

Scaling and Hiring Challenge

Scott:

World University and School needs to raise monies to hire our first executive director and 4-5 interns, so fundraising is the first challenge WUaS is facing. The main focus for the first WUaS executive director will be accreditation in the state of California (BPPE, WASC senior, NACAC membership for the Common Application), and given the MIT OCW-centric and Friendly/Quaker-informed mindset of WUaS, WUaS would like to hire a fFriend or someone who has gone to a Quaker college/school and enjoyed their learning experience there or similar, as well as someone who at the same time may have graduated from a MIT or Yale, for example, with their Creative Commons' course offerings. Doing this in multiple languages, after initially focusing the accreditation process in English will be another scaling challenge some months ahead.

Jhon:

We would like connect inter-lingually in this course with each other to accredit for Creative Commons' licensed WUaS university degrees, as well as develop wiki MIT OCW-centric universities in all 242 countries and in large languages, as well as wiki schools in all 7,106+ languages.

Mindset vs. Footprint

Scott:

The mindset WUaS would like to scale is a MIT-centric, creative STEM problem-solving one and also a Ffriendly collaborative communicative harmonizing-effect even Harbin Hot Springs’ warm mindset or culture. For this latter mindset, see especially - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/09/orchid-mantis-meditative-harbin-warm.html. Scaling in this academic high achieving as well as harmonizing contentment way emerges from, in World University and School's monthly business meetings (in the manner of Quakers) the contentment and MIT-centric communicative practices of the existing team already, in part, - especially at WUaS monthly business board meetings. Scaling these practices in particular through participation and attendance, and related specialization will significantly help to spread this mindset. WUaS plans to grow size-wise (footprint-wise) with this mindset potentially to hire as many as 800,000 - to 1 million people (IBM has about 426,000 employees) with MIT OCW-centric wiki CC universities and schools in all 7,106+ languages and 242+ countries, - offering the on the degree side Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. degrees as well as the I.B. diploma in large languages and many countries. ON the wiki side, WUaS would like to scale the Wikipedia-mindset of do it yourself collaborative editable web pages knowledge generation around MIT OCW, so wikify MIT OCW in large languages and most countries for free degrees with MIT-informed highest achievers as students and faculty.

Jhon:

No matter what your stage of study is, your economic situation or the language you use, this project provides quality material in your language. WUaS wants to demonstrate that no barriers exist any longer that might prevent your intellectual development; in fact, because WUaS is wiki, we all can become teachers in this people-to-people open learning and teaching wiki.

'Catholicism' vs. 'Buddhism'

Scott:

MIT OCW-centric WUaS is more Buddhist (but really unprogrammed Quaker) in planning to scale with an underlying mindset. Via our WUaS monthly business meeting practices, based loosely on Quaker Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly business meeting process, WUaS would like to scale organizationally for each large language with corresponding countries, and as wiki schools in all languages. WUaS expects to expand 1) a developing sophisticated Quaker business process, 2) wiki culture, and 3) with great universities’ decision-making processes (such as MIT, Stanford, HYP missions and decision-making processes around knowledge generation), - all of which will be how WUAS develops our scaling philosophy, Buddhist-wise, as the venture grows.

Jhon:

Initially the platform offered the content and material for the world is unique and special it is wiki (editable) and CC (Creative Commons' licensed) because wiki information technologies offer easy access and a reponsive collective structure, where we all can edit the WUaS wiki. Eventually for degrees WUaS would like to engage the Conference Method of Teaching and Learning, modeled on Reed College's conference method - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - where students learn to talk with each other in specific academic ways.

Hot Cause & Cool Solution

Scott:

Universal education in all 7,106+ languages and 242+countries online, especially MIT OCW-centric, is a hot cause, and a CC World University and School, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, especially designed with developing database querying software such as SemanticWiki and for all languages, is a very cool solution. Free and MIT and CC and wiki university education will stir hope in many poor high achieving people around the globe.

Jhon:

In many countries millions of students need open educational resources/material or courses for their schools or universities and through these learn to deal with economic, social problems, etc. This project connects students with MIT quality learning resources, and free access, and WUaS thus breaks the barriers that limits these students.

Cut Cognitive Load

Scott:

Specialization of WUaS interns, with plans to hire mostly graduate and undergraduate students from great universities in all languages to develop WUaS wiki subject pages and courseware in their own disciplines, will reduce cognitive load. These high achieving knowledge, student-developed and discipline-oriented specializations will thus reduce cognitive load conflict and also thus potentially increase willpower for these interns especially who may want to develop their own wiki subject pages to become expertly knowledgeable in a specific area or aspect of a discipline. WUaS would also like to hire Quakers/Friends around the globe, and think that the enjoyable Quaker Silent Meeting process, as a kind of (Buddhist?) meditation and underlying mindset will help reduce cognitive load among managers and administrators, as will the aspect of being part of a Ffriendly team.

Jhon:

This will include stages of dissemination, development of existing content in another language, the development of themes, development of fundraising methods, and the development of methods of teaching, - all reducing cognitive load.

This is a writing project for a 5 week free Stanford NovoEd course Scott is taking entitled "Scaling Up Your Venture Without Screwing Up" - https://novoed.com/scaling-up-your-venture-without-screwing-up.

I've posted this course project here -

Rowan tree: Twitter/social media and social and political change - how has/does/could it work uniquely in Africa?, Upcoming "Information Technology, the Network Society and the Global University" course, Connecting in virtual spaces for this course, Social Theory

Hi Jo,

You're from Kenya, Africa, and studying at University in Germany - great! Twitter and social and political change - how does it work uniquely in Africa?

What's your avatar's name in SL? I just went into SL and didn't find any contact from a new avatar that could be yours; mine again is "Aphilo Aarde". The course's long-standing group is called "Soc & Info Tech - Aphilo on Berkman." Besides finding and joining the group, please simply come to the course in SL this Saturday, Sep 27, 2014, at 11am Pacific, which is, I think, 1900 hours in Germany. Please let your researcher friends know in the colloquium (by reading parts of this email?) about this Saturday's course; after the first hour in SL, we'll all migrate into a Google + group video Hangout for the second hour.

The first half of this course is significantly informed by Manuel Castells' research on the Network Society especially in terms of the generative history of the IT revolution as it unfolds, which I find captivating and riveting. The significance of the network society (Castells) as it develops and comes informs social network sites is fascinating. It will be interesting too to come into conversation with all of you who come vis-a-vis Fuchs, Morozov and others as the course unfolds. The second half of this course will involve discussing shaping a wiki MIT OCW-centric Global University, planned for all 7,106 languages and 242 countries, plus much much more. I'm hoping all who participate can blog or post weekly about the emergent conversation.

Have you seen this Harvard video on the ethnography of Internet cafes in Ghana by UC Berkeley's Jenna Burrell - http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2013/02/burrell ?

Here too are the Media Studies wiki subject plus main links - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Media_Studies#World_University_and_School_Links, the Visual Anthropology wiki subject page plus main links - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Visual_Anthropology#World_University_and_School_Links, and Africa World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Africa#World_University_and_School_Links, the beginning of online MIT OCW-centric Universities in African Nation States and in main African languages, as resources and examples of how WUaS works. Check out the MIT OCW courseware here, and please add some resources, or teach to web camera and add this to WUaS.

Please do share this email and invite everyone in your colloquium to the course and looking forward to meeting you in-worlds!

Best und Alles Gute,
Scott

Trillium: Open Friendly World University and School HIVE meets at AFSC offices/San Francisco Friends Meeting this week on Monday, 9/22, and Wednesday, 9/24, Hives are meeting spaces to ask questions, explore what you'd like to teach online, volunteer, learn how to curate WUaS, attend a WUaS workshop, and/or share your ideas about WUaS, Quaker Quarterly Meeting sharing, "Friendly-informed World University and School and Quakers"

Dear Ffriends,

I hope you're having a good weekend.

The open Friendly World University and School HIVE meets at AFSC offices/San Francisco Friends Meeting this week on Monday, 9/22, and Wednesday, 9/24, from about 8:45 to 11:15 am. I'm so glad this way continues to be opening.

Come help create in person at this HIVE people-to-people Ffriendly-informed online learning - and planned for all 7,106 languages and 242 countries at MIT OCW-centric World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - the way you would like education to be ... and via this Friendly wiki (editable web pages) - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com. Friendly WUaS is planning online, accredited MIT OCW-centric degrees, and these hives are meeting spaces to ask questions, explore what you'd like to teach online, volunteer, learn how to curate WUaS, attend a WUaS workshop, and/or share your ideas about WUaS.

Quaker Quarterly Meeting sharing

I'm also glad to say too that at Quarterly Meeting on Saturday, October 18th, at Sierra Friends Center, WUaS is planning a "Friendly-informed World University and School and Quakers" sharing in conversation with M&O - stay tuned.

A kind of leading, Quaker MIT OCW-centric WUaS would like to become the online Harvard / MIT / Swarthmore / Haverford / Oxbridge of the Internet, and in all languages and countries, while facilitating Ffriendly open Wiki (editable web pages) schools in all 7,106 languages and 242 countries.

Unprogrammed Quaker Meeting (non-theistically Ffriendly informed as well) at AFSC/SFFM will meet this Monday and Wednesday around 8:45 am for ten minutes or so and before each WUaS hive.

Looking forward to meeting with you.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Thanks. As a heads' up, I'm planning to teach my ongoing course (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/09/siau-island-and-tarsiers-information.html) on Saturdays online - from 11-1 from Sierra Friends Center - which I've actually done once before some years ago ... unfortunately it's a schedule conflict ... but I think we can dance around this :) ...it might even be possible to combine the two ... which would be interesting.

It's a scheduling conflict with a lunch table; I also don't think teaching my online course "Information Technology, the Network Society, and the Global University" would dovetail well with a QM WUaS lunch table. What would you both suggest scheduling-wise?

With Ffriendly greetings,
Scott
