Ideas for walks in western PA - Wildflowers ? ~ glad to have visited the Sewickley Heights History Center and Fern Hollow Nature Center (where we visited last Sunday!)... and also I went in to the Sewickley Public Library to ask a few further Quaker Valley history questions and learned some interesting  things further  ...  like the neighboring community Edgeworth in 1878 may have had 1/3 of its residents identifying with Quaker Valley (but not necessarily as Quaker)

Hi Ma,

Looking forward to exploring Saltsburg PA area, and walks in the vicinity tomorrow on Sunday May 5, 2024 ... and potentially for wildflowers

Further thoughts about Quakers in Quaker Valley Sewickley research (would like to be heading up to Harbin for soaking and ethnographic book 2) from yesterday F 5/3/24 ... and with your/our Hi email threads from then below (for the record, and because I'm a scholar of the internet and information technology innovation idea-wise) ...

Again,

"glad to have visited the Sewickley Heights History Center and Fern Hollow Nature Center (where we visited last Sunday!)... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/environment ... and also I went in to the Sewickley Public Library to ask a few further Quaker Valley history questions and learned some interesting  things further  ...  like the neighboring community Edgeworth in 1878 may have had 1/3 of its residents identifying with Quaker Valley (but not necessarily as Quaker) ... As I left I passed a woman with a kind of 'Sewickley society face' (with parallels to 'Fox Chapel society' and related 'society faces' that I associate with what I recall seeing in the 1970s, I'd write (as ethnographic interpretation further research needed)  ... and am curious how Sewickley produces such faces social scientifically ..."

Having gone in to the Sewickley Public Library again yesterday, and gotten a few further references from a librarian there (see email below - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2024/05/chinook-salmon-oncorhynchus-tshawytscha.html ), would love to make this getting of Quaker evidence and documentation possible with machine learning and robots even ... and to get ALL (in an iterating way) of the library archives in the Quaker Valley Sewickley area into a machine readable format ... and re even interesting stories books and narratives emerging out of Google Street View books ... And even talking with avatar bots or avatar agents ...

See you tomorrow fir further wildflower seeking in around Saltsburg ...

Love, Scott

Interesting to get a first image, and thanks for the pointer to the Tri-Colleges' libraries (Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges) in the greater Philadelphia area, but the reference data needs parsing, since it seems to be a bit contradictory in terms of dates for example (a direction I'm not heading in necessarily).

Thanks for the information that Quaker Valley Sewickley might possibly have been informed by Wilburite and Quaker Conservative Ohio Yearly Meeting Friends' trajectory (re Friends /Quakers in the 1800s) ...

The Wilbur-Gurney Quaker split occurred (~1845?) after

The Hicksite-Orthodox Quaker split (~1827ish?)

and while I posit they were Quaker identity related (re I think Bible and individual Friends' groups' place history, in conversation with British traveling Quakers too), I don't know the underlying issues in these splits ...

(And when I worked in the bookstore of Pendle Hill Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation, near Swarthmore College, I recall seeing an elaborate chart poster of Quaker historical branches, but only find this one here - https://quakerpodcast.org/quaker-branches/ - which is helpful even with dates, but as an unprogrammed Friend coming out of the 1960s and 1970s, and having becoming a member of the RSoF in Edinburgh Scotland in 2004 when studying at the University of Edinburgh's School of Celtic and Scottish studies, and progressive, I'm interested in how did Quaker Valley near Sewickley PA, 12 miles west of Pgh PA become Quaker ... and what this history is ... and 'from the inside' - eg as a Friend / Quaker who appreciates the meditation of unprogrammed Quaker Silent Meeting and the related life from this).

4
So, thanks too for mentioning the 'other' possible Sewickley Quaker Meeting, I'll call it (in Westmoreland county) ... and possible documents'  and / or library  resources ... and for sharing the links /URLs for further follow up, as I continue to seek to grow a Realistic Virtual Earth For History and For Quaker Valley history, with parallels to, and interoperable with a Realistic Virtual Harbin Hot Springs for ethnographic study, and regarding my second Harbin ethnographic book project, to be published potentially FROM Google Street View with time slider, text in the sidebar too.

5
Am curious, too, in the way libraries and books and archival documents too make possible - to explore carrying out such Quaker Valley Sewickley research remotely or virtually, eg after I move back to the SF Bay Area potentially later this 2024, and with machine learning and AI and even robotics, but perhaps in seeking to lay some groundwork for making accessible the Quaker Valley Sewickley archival resources in iterating ways re information technologies  - and regrading World Univ & Sch wiki libraries especially.

How best, I'm wondering, to add and make machine readable and accessible not only ALL the documents from the

Sewickley Valley Historical Society

Sewickley Heights History Center

Sewickley Library

including of course Quaker resources and references, and also re the Tri-Counties' libraries - Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges - in the greater Philadelphia area, but also with new approaches re MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch's university research libraries with wiki-adding local archives, like those above and the Tri-Counties' libraries, eg to Gemini generative AI purposes (planned in all 200 countries and in their main languages) ?

I just asked this question to GEMINI AI, and got this amazing response in seconds -

ere's a breakdown on how to approach this ambitious project of creating a machine-readable archive incorporating local historical societies, libraries, and colleges with a focus on Quaker materials:

Data Acquisition:

  1. Contact and Collaboration: Reach out to the aforementioned institutions:

    • Sewickley Valley Historical Society
    • Sewickley Heights History Center
    • Sewickley Library
    • Haverford College Library
    • Bryn Mawr College Library
    • Swarthmore College Library Explain your goals and the potential benefits of a wider audience accessing their materials through your machine-readable archive. Negotiate data-sharing agreements that give you the right to process their information.
  2. Data Formats: Ideally, the institutions would provide their documents in electronically readable formats like:

    • Plain Text (.txt)
    • Portable Document Format (PDF) with searchable text (OCR applied)
    • Microsoft Word (.docx) or other editable document formats

Machine Readability:

  1. Optical Character Recognition (OCR): If documents are scanned images (PDFs or JPEGs), you'll need OCR software to convert them into searchable text.
  2. Document Structure and Metadata: Apply a consistent structure to the documents, including:
    • Title
    • Author(s)
    • Date
    • Subject keywords (including "Quaker" for relevant documents)
    • Links to original sources (websites or physical archives)

Collaboration with World University and School (WUaS):

  1. Data Integration: Explore how WUaS's wiki platform can handle your data. Ideally, their system should allow:

    • Uploading documents in various formats
    • Extracting text content for searchability
    • Adding metadata tags for categorization
    • User-friendly interface for browsing and searching documents
  2. Local Archive Integration: Discuss how WUaS can integrate local archives like yours. This might involve:

    • Creating a dedicated section for your project within WUaS's wiki
    • Linking your documents to relevant MIT OCW materials or other scholarly resources on WUaS

Incorporating Generative AI (like Gemini):

  1. Training Data: While Gemini is still under development, you can prepare training data for future AI applications. This could involve:

    • Annotating your documents with additional information like named entities (people, places, organizations) and relationships between them.
    • Extracting factual information from the documents to create a knowledge base.
  2. Accessibility: Ensure your archive is accessible in multiple languages to align with Gemini's global aspirations. Explore using Machine Translation tools to create multilingual versions of your documents.

Challenges and Considerations:

  • Copyright restrictions may apply to some materials. Ensure you have the rights to process and share the information.
  • This project requires significant time, effort, and potentially financial resources for data acquisition, processing, and platform integration.
  • Uploading massive amounts of data to WUaS might require technical considerations and collaboration with their team.

Overall, this is a commendable initiative to preserve local history and make it globally accessible. By collaborating with institutions and leveraging new technologies, you can create a valuable resource for researchers and anyone interested in the history of the region and Quakerism.

Thanks, Scott

Innovating with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

With the rapid advancements in technology, the possibilities for innovation in various fields are expanding exponentially. One area that holds immense potential is the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence in education. This article will delve into the ways in which these technologies can be harnessed to revolutionize the field of education, specifically focusing on MIT OpenCourseWare and World University in School.

Peter Norvig's Research at Google

Peter Norvig, the Director of Google Research, is at the forefront of driving innovation in both education and technology. His research areas encompass Data Mining, modeling, education innovation, information retrieval, machine intelligence, natural language processing, and software engineering. These areas hold great promise for leveraging machine learning and AI to enhance the learning experience.

Utilizing Machine Learning and AI in Teaching

Imagine a Scenario where graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, who are teaching live Google group video hangouts, can incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to augment their teaching. By integrating these advanced technologies into their instructional methods, they can provide a more engaging and personalized learning experience for their students. This not only benefits the learners but also helps the instructors gain valuable teaching experience.

Expanding MIT OpenCourseWare through Machine Learning

With the vast amount of content available on MIT OpenCourseWare, the potential to expand it further through machine learning is immense. By utilizing data mining and modeling, graduate student instructors can tailor their courses to specific topics or areas of interest. Additionally, machine learning and artificial intelligence can facilitate the retrieval of information from different languages, enabling the creation of unique courses that cater to a global audience. This expansion would significantly enhance the capabilities of MIT OpenCourseWare, allowing for more diverse and innovative educational offerings.

Language Diversity and Machine Learning

One of the most significant challenges in global education is overcoming language barriers. However, machine learning and artificial intelligence offer promising solutions to this problem. By employing state-of-the-art translation technologies, it becomes possible to develop courses in multiple languages, thereby breaking down language barriers and making education more inclusive and accessible to learners worldwide.

The Potential of Machine Learning in Language Translation

Machine learning has already made significant advancements in language translation. Platforms like Google's Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) can Translate content accurately across a hundred languages. This breakthrough technology complements MIT OpenCourseWare's objective of expanding its reach to different regions and cultures. By harnessing the power of machine learning and AI, course materials can be translated more effectively, ensuring that the integrity of the content is preserved.

Developing Courses in Multiple Languages

Currently, MIT OpenCourseWare is available in five languages: English, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Turkish, and Spanish. However, the potential to develop courses in other languages is immense. By leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence, it becomes possible to create courses in the remaining hundred-plus languages spoken around the world. This expansion would provide individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds with access to quality educational resources and foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Google's Role in Education Innovation

Google, being a leading technology company, plays a pivotal role in driving innovation in the field of education. Their tools, such as TensorFlow, an advanced artificial intelligence software, offer immense potential for enhancing the learning experience. By utilizing TensorFlow and Google's neural machine translation capabilities, MIT OpenCourseWare, along with World University in School, can develop more comprehensive and diverse knowledge resources for graduate student instructors and open-ended learners.

The Future of MIT OpenCourseWare and World University in School

With the integration of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Google's innovative technologies, the future of education looks promising. MIT OpenCourseWare, in collaboration with World University in School, aims to utilize these advancements fully. By leveraging machine learning algorithms, advanced translation tools, and collaborative platforms like WikiData and WikiBase, the vision of providing free, high-quality education to individuals globally is rapidly becoming a reality.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Virtual Earth

Apart from revolutionizing the field of education, machine learning and artificial intelligence have the potential to reshape our virtual world. Scientists can collaborate with these technologies to create a realistic virtual Earth, complete with street view, cellular, and atomic levels. By integrating scientific research, equations, and images into this virtual Earth, researchers can further expand our understanding of the world. Machine learning algorithms can aid in populating this virtual Universe, making it an immersive and interactive learning environment.

Creating a Realistic Virtual Earth

Building a realistic virtual Earth requires collaboration between scientists, physicists, chemists, and biologists. Their research, combined with mathematical proofs, ethnographic interpretations, and historical documents, can Shape this virtual Earth. The process involves mapping scientific knowledge onto the virtual Earth, allowing for real-time exploration and discovery. As this virtual universe evolves, machine learning and artificial intelligence will play a crucial role in driving its growth.

Collaboration between Scientists and Machine Learning

Scientists can use machine learning algorithms to process large amounts of data and extract valuable insights. By analyzing brainwave data or utilizing optogenetics to study brain functions, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of the brain's intricacies. This collaboration between scientists and machine learning has the potential to unlock new frontiers of knowledge, contributing to diverse fields such as linguistics, stem cell research, and neurobiology.

The Study of Bliss and Enjoyment in Learning

Understanding the psychology of optimal learning experiences is essential in designing effective educational programs. In his book "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience," Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi explores the concept of flow, where individuals experience deep concentration and enjoyment in structured activities. This Notion applies to various learning scenarios, be it solving physics problems, engaging in language conversations, or playing Sports. Machine learning can aid in studying and enhancing these optimal learning experiences.
