[CamPhilEvents] Maiya Jordan at Mental Sciences on Self-Deception Thursday May 20th 16:00-17:30

Dear all,

This Thursday at the Mental Sciences Club, from 4:00 to 5:30, we are excited to welcome Dr Maiya Jordan, who is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in philosophy. She will be talking to us about “A Non-Doxastic Account of Self-Deception”.

Abstract Regarding someone who self-deceives that P, what is the nature of her professed belief that P? Doxastic accounts hold that it is a genuine belief. Non-doxastic accounts deny this. In particular, the pretence account holds that the self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P. I argue that the truth lies somewhere between these two positions. The self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P, but it is a pretence that is distinctively restricted, because necessarily misrepresented by her as a genuine belief. The result is that she sometimes acts as if she believes that P, and other times acts as if she does not so believe.

Hi Jessie, Maiya and Tom,

Thanks so much for your paper, Maiya! Looking forward to your talk on Thursday! (Long-term conversation questions: about the Actual-Virtual, and Physical-Digital and co-constituting consciousness, eg https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/gray-parrot-consciousness.html, - and thoughts about possible worlds, per Princeton Philosopher David Lewis -

Gray parrot: Consciousness * * * The actual-virtual and physical-digital co-constituting distinctions above could be used to 'tag' with machine learning both subjectively reported actual experiences of consciousness and similar (sentience), and also tag physical brain observations of related activity (brain activity) ... where modeling these in simulations (both virtually and digitally) could also help the further subjective and scientific naming of the actual experiences of consciousness and sentience, and physicality of this in the brain ... Dear Maiya, Jessie, and Tom,

Thanks for your brilliant talk just now!

Here are the questions I asked in text at the close of your great talk, Maiya:

A
Brilliant, and thank you, Maiya!
A broad question, in text only (since this field of philosophy isn't mine):
What role could non-human primates (non-verbal too) shed on the questions you're asking, Maiya regarding doxastic belief - "the result is that she sometimes acts as if she believes that P, and other times acts as if she does not so believe" and  "her actions are guided by her non-reflective awareness that her professed belief is a pretence"?

Am curious also about your thinking about the 'Logic of Doxastic Actions: Action-priority update' - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dynamic-epistemic/#LogiDoxaActiActiPrioUpda (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dynamic-epistemic/)

Might it be possible please to see somehow your slides again, or even the video of your talk with slides, if it might be available?

How might we possibly explore some of these questions, and other related questions (perhaps actually-virtuallly digitally or computer modeling informed, primatology-informed, anthropologically-informed, and even possibly Lacan informed, +) - but perhaps in a more 'riffing' way - emerging from your excellent, formal, and remarkably well-formulated paper, and question & answer, Maiya?

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Scott,

Thanks for the questions! I haven't really thought about self-deception in other animals. Certainly, we see clear cases of deception. Here's a tired thought: penguins are particularly funny when deceiving other penguins. A deceitful penguin will present himself very innocently to his dupe, having stealthily stolen stones from their nest to make his own nest building easier. It's just that 'misrepresenting oneself as sincere' that my argument deploys: applied reflexively in self-deception, it renders self-deception instantaneous and non-doxastic.

I've attached the slides here, though they're really just a condensed version of the paper I send you earlier. I hope they're useful anyhow!

Best wishes,

Maiya

Dear Maiya,

Thank you for replying, - and when you must be exhausted, after your excellent talk.

The role of the social scientific researcher (ethologist, primatologist - even sociocultural anthropologist with a whole other set of questions, and methodological issues regarding reflexivity) here with penguins or primates, regarding the role of the philosopher suggesting arguments for how self-deception works in the abstract, and possibly subjectively regarding consciousness questions (ie the intractable challenge of bringing the 1st person with self-reporting via language, and 3rd person scientific accounts together), come to mind - and from your talk too.

So much seems to be created symbolically with the philosopher's language, regarding the sincerity of the penguins, ie 'It's just that 'misrepresenting oneself as sincere' that my argument deploys: applied reflexively in self-deception, it renders self-deception instantaneous and non-doxastic' where what's real or imaginary (in Lacan's 'mirror 'register) seems open to interpretation as self-deception, instantaneous and non-doxastic. How best to communicate about this, in penguins, for example (and presumably with video recordings as data), further to bring out further clarity? Thanks so so much for the clarification. (Maybe an #ActualVirtual realistic virtual earth for philosophy in 1 #RealisticVirtualEarth - for STEM too - and with a #FilmTo3D App can help! with some of these #HashTags here - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1370926854257876995?s=20 :)

And thank you for the slides, and your reply, Maiya! I look forward to learning further from you.

Best wishes,
Scott

Hi Maiya, (Jessie, Tom),

Where would you head with this Tweet, - which is not in the sphere of Philosophy per se - but seems to address questions, idea-wise, very close to what you're suggesting

And as philosophers of mind, here's a wee 'riff' on ' "an organism has conscious mental states if and only if there is something that it is like to be that organism—something it is like for the organism" ...
' ... As if '  too ...
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/red-trillium-cow-and-calf-what-is-cow.html ... re questions of consciousness transposed to a species other than a bat, or great apes (which can learn some language) ... or any other species that might help in comparison explain 'the mysterious flame' (and am seeking to jump away from the sphere of metaphor, and potentially to the Actual-Virtual, Physical-Digital to explore such questions further - in language, and regarding science-grounded  representations, and research, and even coding for this :) ... And could one with a #FilmTo3D App at the molecular and cellular levels code for conscious neural processes (perhaps as someone is speaking too) into Google Poly, a library of virtual objects (which is closing in June I think)?

I'm curious if we might explore talking about some of these philosophy questions in video possibly sometime?

All the best, Scott

Cow & calf

Ma,

Came across this cow & calf in photo at dusk on my walk today, just before a very nice 3-way lookout on a saddle ... nice to see (and the rusty basin is to their left up a hill). After a long uphill walk on nice evening, turned around here. What is cow consciousness, I've been asking myself.

They're aware, and am not sure how much they remember, and herd connection seems to be part of their 'thereness' - as consciousness. Their cattle consciousness is different from bat consciousness, and dog consciousness for ex. Not clear how a scientist would characterize their consciousness (how in their brains bodymind what we could call consciousness finds form) ...or if Cows could talk, how they would characterize it from the 'inside.' (Or how I'd characterize this ...) ... so am not sure how to bring the 3rd and 1st person or bodymind (re cows) accounts together, but I'd suggest cow consciousness has parallels with human consciousness.

Their awareness as consciousness is in their vision & other senses - and somehow in cow cognition - but living in fields, and eating grass, and with no language, their consciousness seems staid ... and also not language-centric. What is cow consciousness further, I wonder ... and as a way to think about human consciousness ?

:) And how to explore too connecting with Z? :)

Love, Scott

What a lovely image at dusk.

I think I’m seeing more during this pandemic; the little things.  The details.

Have a good day.

Love, Ma

*
Thanks, Ma, - albeit a little difficult to see given low light levels ... so glad you're seeing things anew, and more, in this pandemic ... and details ... So, further, in the asking about cattle awareness or consciousness ...

Am asking what is "cattle consciousness" ... that is, what is it like to be a cattle / cow? Perhaps this means, per your email, what is it like to see like a cattle (singular) and re the details that a cattle might see with awareness and consciousness - both objectively and subjectively (which like the impossibility, at this time, of reconciling the 1st and 3rd person accounts linguistically for humans - or 1st and 3rd bodymind in the case of a cattle, male or female) ... or bringing together a scientific view of a cattle's consciousness with a 'personal' or better 'cattle-centric' account what they are aware of ... (In writing this, am observing newly some linguistic challenges too in exploring these questions philosophically in words :)

Consciousness, philosophically - western, is a mystery ... and re Yoga it's about a kind of oneness with the Seer, big S ... a very different account and contextualizing of ideas and experiences :)

'Consciousness easy and hard problems' (see below, and re Chalmers) - and "What is it like to be a bat?" essay inform some of these questions ... but it's fascinating per your observation that we're seeing new details during this pandemic ... and how would this work regarding becoming conscious in new ways?

Love, Scott
'consciousness easy and hard problems'

Hard problem of consciousness
"The hard problem of consciousness is the problem of explaining why and how sentient organisms have qualia [note 1] or phenomenal experiences—how and why it is that some internal states are subjective, felt states, such as heat or pain, rather than merely nonsubjective, unfelt states, as in a thermostat or a toaster.[2]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_problem_of_consciousness

Easy problem of consciousness
" "easy problems" of explaining the ability to discriminate, integrate information, report mental states, focus attention, and so forth.[4] Easy problems are (relatively) easy because all that is required for their solution is to specify a mechanism that can perform the function.[4]"

Ma,

A new image idea came to me re Scottish small piping

It's the otherness of Scottish kilt and attire that can compliment this vision of cultural alien of spaceship bagpiper playing beautiful bagpipe as (inscrutable) computer code that I'd like to highlight as vision with video even in my upcoming 'Honey in the Bag' Scottish Small Pipes' album. (Indians. India. Hippies - at Harbin Hot Springs esp - can all get very beautifully to this other cultural liminal luminaries' space, in visionary clothes too, - and with music). I won't suggest that spaceship bagpipe computer small piping is anything like shooting a ray gun for tele-transportation  "Beam me up, Scotty" from Star Trek. ... but this Scottish alien envisioning could contribute to a vision of freedom for Scotland as well, Ma! ;)

Angela Farmer also explores vision. She's very visionary as a Yogini and artistic (as are most peoples in this ethnic dress or clothes, and music ... culturally and identity-wise as well ... People like Angela are able to see this in others in ways that other people don't, in my experience, and she's able too to elicit this further interestingly :) ... but with this spaceship bagpiping otherness envisioning ... am curious how it will inform my daily playing toward being able to transform people listening to another space ('flow' experiences yes ) ... but also with a kind of well played computer code ray gun from tele-transportation) ... in a science fiction vein, yes ... but it's learning further how to small pipe in these regards to elicit this further as I teleport from spaceship to earth in kilt, perhaps on porch in Canyon, with hills in background ... to play wonderfully all the tunes I'm planning for "Honey in the Bag" ...

And you, Ma, and further seeing details? Consciousness-wise as well? :))

Beautiful, and thanks for the learning opportunity too!

I think we stopped at Dark Valley Woods Park in late December, didn't we, Ma? Could you walk there (safely and along a nice way) from there, by any chance?

Here it is in Google Maps -- with photos one can add, I think, although I don't recall crossing Hwy 70 to get to here afterward, so maybe we stopped at a different park! :)

It would be fun to explore adding flowers and photos to Google Maps together too. Tym,

Thanks for your emails, - with some further follow ups here ...

Double protection against nothing - nothing but the common cold or flu, I postulate (potentially in preparing for bio-warfare, however) ... And these cold viruses are inside you anyway (as rhinoviruses, which may be older language, given advances of the past year) ...

... And, 1) the Pfizer vaccine is only 95% effective - hardly protective enough in an emergency situation, but pretty good in a fire drill scenario, and 2) with it I can still become herd immune, - and still get sick - since I can pick up a common cold or flu virus from someone else, and still develop antibodies against these ... A fine situation we're in :))

Dear Scott,

I don't see the relation with the Lacan tweet I'm afraid. You'd have to say a bit more there maybe!

Thanks for the link. I'm super busy right now, so video discussions would be out for me.

Cheers,

Maiya

Holy moly, Maiya,

Thanks for your email.

I'd suggest you watch Lacan himself - https://youtu.be/w1PmWy4aSaQ - but I'm not sure, word-wise, whether this 1972 video - and regarding 'confronting' the French youth - would highlight the parallels between your 'self-deception' and Lacan's 'false-perception' as terms. And if you - in the field of philosophy of mind - could be pointing to an issue in understanding awareness, or consciousness, Lacan seems to be explaining it in the context of psychoanalytic understandings of the mind; regarding consciousness, how would delusions relate to self-deception? 'Instantaneous and non-doxastic,' you argue, where Lacan seems, with this quote, to potentially add hallucination. (Seems like the idea of denial in your slides' conclusion would yield another set of possible parallels with Lacan's thinking too). What do you think?

Regarding your talk especially, where do you head with the question 'what is consciousness?' or 'what is mind,' - and am interested in the whole of the field of philosophy of mind regarding consciousness somehow - perhaps apart from 'self' (or subject, per Lacan)?

Cheers, Scott

PS
What is the culture of Cambridge Philosophy like? (If you were to write hypothetically an ethnography of Cambridge Philosophy, what might be its main thesis?:)

Since you were there, and are also philosophers of mind, am curious about some of your thoughts about Maiya's talk and these questions here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/05/grey-parrot-psittacus-erithacus-what-is.html (& see most recent communications below).

Appreciating, further, the delimited, focused aspect of your 'self-deception' presentation, Maiya, - and am further wondering what role the unconscious might play in both 'self-deception' and 'false perception' - https://twitter.com/lacancircle/status/1395191553748922375?s=19 -  and regarding the philosophy of mind. Seems to me, regarding the Lacan video I shared with you - "Jacques Lacan giving a lecture at The Catholic University of Louvain in 1972" ... https://youtu.be/w1PmWy4aSaQ - that Lacan is a master of the 'unconscious' in the context of psychoanalytic thinking about the mind (potentially quite different from Philosophy of Consciousness/Mind thinking about the mind), and am curious what this might mean for the delimited aspect of your paper, and re the Lacan Tweet - https://twitter.com/lacancircle/status/1395191553748922375?s=19 - ... But this opens all kinds of languages' can of worms, regarding consciousness, philosophy of mind and the unconscious, - and in relation to your very focused and well argued talk. In what ways might there be a relation between the self-deception you argue for in your talk, Maiya, and the 'false perception' Jacques Lacan suggests here in this Tweet? Jessie, Thomas?

By the way, here's another contemporaneous Lacan video with some further interesting thinking about the unconscious -

Thoughts, questions, ideas, suggestions?

Friendly greetings, and sincerely, Scott

Dear Scott,

I don't see the relation with the Lacan tweet I'm afraid. You'd have to say a bit more there maybe!

Thanks for the link. I'm super busy right now, so video discussions would be out for me.

Cheers,

Maiya

Monday, May 25, 2021 -

What is the culture of Cambridge Philosophy like? (If you were to write hypothetically an ethnography of Cambridge Philosophy, what might be its main thesis?:)

Dear Ma, Dick, Tym, Pin, Ed, All

Would it be possible to find my and World Univ & Sch's (philosophy of mind) way into an invitation into the 'real' or 'ironic' (or cynical even) - and physical too - 'world' or 'culture' of Cambridge University Philosophy of Mind by engaging philosophers of mind on its faculty, such as Jessie Munton, Maiya Jordan & Thomas McClelland - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/05/grey-parrot-psittacus-erithacus-what-is.html - but staying away from even the illegal sex industry (which I think exists in academic philosophy in general, for ex., re some kind of weird - & illegal - reasoning too), I wonder? (I've been in communication with these 3 philosophers of mind recently with regards to Maiya's recent talk online).

Within a very few minutes, I received the new Cambridge Philosophy email below, in which I could read some irony and possibly even a reply to my email to Jessie, Maiya, and Tom.

Might this even come to inform an actual-virtual physical-digital approach to questions of philosophy of mind in a single realistic virtual earth - ? ...

What is consciousness? 'conscious mental states' >http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/red-trillium-cow-and-calf-what-is-cow.html #WUaSconsciousness >Explore w #ActualVirtual  #PhysicalDigital & could one w #FilmTo3D App at atomic&cellular levels CODE for conscious TALKING neural processes in #GooglePoly (which is closing this June 2020, but with what comes after), a library of virtual objects?

But what about modeling the unconscious, or unconscious processes re language (and per Lacan) ... say with a #FilmTo3D App at the cellular and atomic levels too? And in beginning to research consciousness in new directions, regarding the actual and virtual, the physical and digital?

On with The Desiderata - https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html (and a bit of Yoga asana +)

Glad to have arranged just now - at about the same time as all of the above - having tea on my garden patio with my landlord, Navin Doshi, and his son, Sandeep, who does Yoga pretty much every day, he just said (but whom I may have met for the second time today here in this "safe house" where I'm staying - and am appreciating again his sincerity) :)
