Internet Archive to New York: Don’t Kill the Good Bots in the Fight Against Bad Bots

Internet Archive has joined with EFF and other civil society organizations in asking the Governor of New York to veto new legislation that aims to curb abusive AI scraping, but could unintentionally harm public-interest tools like the Wayback Machine. The proposed Stealth Crawler Prohibition Act risks lumping beneficial web crawlers into the same category as harmful AI bots. Internet Archive's senior policy counsel, Lila Bailey, outlines why we believe lawmakers can address abusive scraping without undermining the digital infrastructure that libraries, researchers, journalists, and the public rely on.
