I've added this to World University and School's "Theories of Learning," and "Courses," because it's partly about the "course-building" program Peter Norvig wrote, which allows you to create a course ... and courses are also what World University and School is a platform for.

And how WUaS instructs its graduate student instructors (MIT and Harvard graduate students?) in the Conference Method will be important in this interweaving with Peter Norvig's thinking about online education.

Dusky Seaside Sparrow: Digital Glasses - Excited by the possibilities of Creative Commons' licensed Cyber-Glasses, Harbin Bubble Glasses and Google Glass, Brainwave headsets and digital glasses, Digital glasses as data sources into a massive, interactive, movie-realistic, virtual world?, How will WUaS navigate spinning off companies, such as virtual worlds' companies for digital glasses, and C.C. Cyber-Glasses' producers, Some related, WUaS, wiki pages ... Wearable Electronics, Virtual Worlds

... excited by the possibilities of Creative Commons' licensed Digital Glasses, Harbin Bubble Glasses and Google Glass.

For my Harbin ethnographic work and 2nd, actual / virtual, Harbin, anthropological book, I see Digital Glasses {Harbin Bubble Glasses?} as the 'field site' of a virtual Harbin in my next book, - for ethnographic comparison with actual Harbin - where you can be at home in your bathtub, for touch, as well as a relaxation response meditation, and also be at Harbin in the warm pool, and all over. I haven't yet heard of a virtual world in Google Glass, - with avatars and group-voice and group-text, and a currency, as well as a group-buildability - as if to combine OpenSim or SL with Google Earth in Google Glass, and I suspect Google Glass will be well-designed and well-coded, with speakers near your ears, making it a better choice in the beginning than Creative Commons' licensed Digital Glasses, or Harbin Bubble Glasses, both of which perhaps World University and School can help eventually develop, along with virtual worlds in Google Glass.

Creative Commons' licensed Digital Glasses seem, too, to have much merit (and developed by a WUaS affiliate), but I don't yet know where Creative Commons' law - http://creativecommons.org/ - stands with regard to physical objects. I'm glad we have a new form of law for sharing, however, - and thanks to the information age. (Creative Commons' as branding opens a whole other set of questions).

Brainwave headsets and digital glasses

I'm also excited about the possibilities of brainwave headsets and digital glasses. To combine brainwave headsets with Google Glass could open all kinds of possibilities. For example, it's now possible with http://brainfingers.com, which I've tried back in 2007, I think, to choose letters from a keyboard on a screen without words or gestures, or play simple games, but the user has to be very relaxed (e.g. Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University was too agitated to use this, due to his Lou Gehrig's disease). And with Tan Le's brainwave headset, you can rotate a digital object on a screen, move it farther and closer, and make it disappear. (See videos below).

What happens in 20 years when we reverse these processes and bring them into the brain and bodymind itself?  Will we be able to create great pleasure, or even, for two, to interweave narratives together in an OpenSim or Second Life environment, with avatars, in symbols, with musical motifs or dreams, all without words or gestures? These seem like fascinating possibilities.

Digital glasses as data sources into a massive, interactive, movie-realistic, virtual world?

And will we all be able to contribute ever increasingly accurate and complete data into an enhanced Google Earth cum OpenSim/Second Life, as we all stroll around planet earth with Google Glass or C.C. Digital Glasses? Perhaps C.C. WUaS will be able also to help develop this when we eventually become financially operational. Cool.

I'm curious, too, to begin to plan for how WUaS will navigate spinning off companies, such as affiliates that make virtual worlds for digital glasses, and C.C. digital glasses' producers, learning lessons about this perhaps more from entrepreneurial MIT and Stanford, which I think of as quite entrepreneurial as great universities, compared with Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Cambridge, or Haverford and Swarthmore, for example.

Catarina pupfish: Outreach for MIT OCW-centric World University and School - High School Students to Apply this Autumn to Matriculate Online in the Autumn of 2014 in English, WUaS Friends Flyer for Prospective Student Applicants

Hi, Universitians,

Thanks to their new head of school, MF, I'm very glad to say I'm heading for Woolman Semester at Sierra Friends' Center in the foothills of the Sierras in 8 days to do outreach for MIT OCW-centric, free World University and School at their graduation on Friday (5/24) and Saturday (5/25) next week, informally networking with students and parents, and perhaps handing out flyers. Woolman Semester is a gap, High School, Quaker semester which accredits with WASC, which WUaS is also planning to do. Here are the beginning Admission's Department page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School and the 'The College at WUaS' page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School. (WUaS is also planning a MIT OCW High School-centric International Baccalaureate high school diploma and in many languages, possibly beginning in 2015 - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme).

And I'm also glad to say that Sherri Maurin, whom I know from San Francisco Friends' Meeting, has agreed to be an exhibitor for WUaS at Friends General Conference (July 1-7) in Greeley, Colorado, for the hour slot. Sherri Maurin is a substitute high school teacher, among other things, in San Francisco.

As a little bit of WUaS history, I did the first WUaS outreach last year at Friends General Conference in Rhode Island in July 2012, for the hour slot in the early evening in the middle of the week, talking with interested f/Friends, besides leaving flyers out on designated tables for the duration of the week. During that time, for example, I talked for about 15 minutes then with Shan Cretin about free, Creative Commons' licensed World University and School. She's the current General Secretary (head) of American Friends' Service Committee (which employs some 225 people around the world), and who also went to MIT and Yale.

The flyers I handed out at FGC then, and which WUaS will make accessible for Woolman Semester and FGC this year, are accessible here -

http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.htm -

(on which you'll also find -

WUaS Notice/Flyer Archives -

http://scottmacleod.com/WUaSNoticeArchive.html

http://scottmacleod.com/WUaSFlyerArchive.html).

WUaS is looking forward to getting numerous, F/friendly and overachieving, online, high school applicants by the end of this year - with January 1, 2014, as the possible, application deadline.

While Stanford's Norvig and Thrun's single MOOC, "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" class in 2011 attracted 160,000 students, - and about 7% finished - and MIT Professor Agarwal's "Circuits and Electronics," online, free, single, MOOC class in 2011/2012 attracted something like 120,000 students, - with a similar completion rate, - for example, WUaS is planning to require 32 courses for a free, undergraduate degree.

And while WUaS's classes plan also to engage the Conference Method in Google + group video Hangouts, and won't attract so many students, MIT OCW-centric WUaS isn't ruling this large numbers of students in the future for such STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes, but wants to develop richly the Conference Method online and have live, great teachers. The first faculty members at WUaS will be the MIT faculty in these videos - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - and WUaS is planning to hire MIT and Harvard and other great universities' graduate students, at first, to facilitate the conference method interactively online.

To summarize about WUaS's framework or platform (and in a wiki, as well) and plans:

High school age applicants, and others, will be applying this autumn 2013 to startup, online, Creative Commons' licensed, free, MIT OCW-centric World University and School to take the C.C. MIT OCW (and possibly C.C. Yale OYC) undergraduate courses here in the autumn of 2014, toward a bachelor's degree ...

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ ...

partly in a Google + group video Hangouts, -

https://plus.google.com/hangouts -

with plans to engage the Conference Method (per Reed College's) in online classes, but probably with graduate instructors at first ...

Please email WUaS at worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com if you have any questions.

With F/friendly greetings,
Scott

Hi, Sherri and Friends,

Here's the actual link to a Google Docs' spreadsheet for possible World University and School student applicants' names, emails and 1st and 2nd parents' emails + at FGC, that I just shared with Sherri! It would be great at FGC if we could get twenty, F/friendly kids' names (... looking for overachievers!). And maybe parents might like to apply and eventually matriculate as well - these are MIT courses that WUaS will offer for credit, of course!

"FGC / Friendly Students to Be at WUaS Email List"
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvXsWjm5CIcbdDVYdm1fUjQzOG85ck5xdUVCYVN2NXc&usp=sharing

World University and School will seek to register you, Sherri, for FGC, in Greeley, Colorado, as Friendly WUaS exhibitor, as well as get flyers to you. Thank you so much doing this, and let's talk further, perhaps tomorrow at Meeting, about all of this.

We can share access to this spreadsheet in the cloud with others, at SFFM, for example, with time.

Here again is the (updated) link to the WUaS Blog entry - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2013/05/outreach-for-quaker-informed-world.html - about Outreach to FGC and Woolman Center.

F/friendly regards,
Scott

Proboscis monkey: Well-done film "The Impossible," about a Tsunami that hits Thailand, and what a British family of 5 with young kids on vacation there does after it gets separated in the melee, and thought of you and WUaS, The woman in the film is a M.D. and she gets physically injured the most from the storm, and has to undergo surgery in a Thai hospital. Eventually the family is reunited and she is flown off for better medical care in Singapore. Here's WUaS's Thai language, wiki, subject page, and one beginning of WUaS's accredited Thai University in Thai, And here are MIT OCW courses translated into the Thai language

Hi B and C,

I saw the well-done film "The Impossible" yesterday evening at Harbin (and finished the 9 draft chapters of my actual / virtual Harbin ethnography, and first of possibly five volumes, last week!) about a Tsunami that hits Thailand in 2004, - a true story - and what a British family of 5 with young kids on vacation there does after it gets separated in the melee, and thought of you and WUaS.

The woman in the film is a M.D. and she gets physically injured the most from the storm (which will probably increase in severity and in numbers with global warming climate change, although this Tsunami was caused by a tectonic shift and, tragically, around 225,000 people died in real life), and has to undergo surgery in a Thai hospital. Eventually the family is reunited and she is flown off for better medical care in Singapore. Re WUaS, how might WUaS's online Medical School and Hospital in all languages and countries, have been a help, as well as how would even some sort of smart phones, for example, on each of the 5 family members, and indeed everyone (for medical and emergency reasons) with long-life batteries have helped reunite this family in the chaos from the storm?

Have you seen this film? And have you explored medicine in Thailand, as well as how medicine, country by country, can improve through sharing of ideas, and in emergency situations?

The film is worth seeing in a variety of ways. If you haven't seen it, let's perhaps see it or similar together sometime in the near future.

WUaS still hasn't become financially operational, to begin to pay people, for example, to do outreach to our first high school applicants this fall, but it looks like we just got the green light yesterday and the day before from the state of California (BPPE) for state approval, which then will allow us to begin to accredit, and add this important - "MIT-centric WUaS is accrediting with the same organization that Stanford and UC Berkeley is accredited with" - information in our outreach to high school students.

And WUaS, as you know, I think, in seeking to become the MIT / Harvard of the Internet, is planning an online Medical School (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Medical_School) and Hospital (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Hospital) in all or most languages (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages) and most countries (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States).

Hope you're well. :)

Cheers,
Scott

Bonobo-aka-pygmy-chimpanzee: Bonobo videos, some of de Waal, as well as the reference to "Peacemaking Among Primates" at World University, "Frans de Waal TED talk - Moral Behavior in Animals," Nontheist Friends, Quakers

Nontheist Friends,

There are many Bonobo videos, some of de Waal, as well as the reference to Peacemaking Among Primates at World University and School's Bonobo chimpanzee wiki page -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bonobo_chimpanzee#Select_Video_and_Audio - all good to learn from, and potentially NtF-wise.

Eventually I think we'll be able to read, for example, "Peacemaking Among Primates" online at the Digital Public Library of America, accessible here at WUaS's Library Resources - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources - but not yet, - and vis-a-vis nontheist Friendly peace making?

I'll look to add the reference S mentioned - "A Critical Notice on a Book on Primates and Philosophers" to this Bonobo Chimpanzee WUaS wiki page.

Chris de O, are you interested in exploring developing the WUaS Law School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School - over time, in another NTF peace-making vein (and per some other emails you've shared with this list)?

Friendly regards,
S

You've probably seen this video before but maybe not-

Frans de Waal TED talk - Moral Behaviour in Animals. The bit with the capuchin monkeys at 12mins is hilarious and adorable.

NY Times article by Prof. Jonathan Haidt - http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/20/how-to-get-the-rich-to-share-the-marbles/ - summarising the results of the following experiment-

Hamann, Katharina, Felix Warneken, Julia R. Greenberg, and Michael Tomasello. "Collaboration encourages equal sharing in children but not in chimpanzees." Nature 476, no. 7360 (2011): 328-331. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v476/n7360/full/nature10278.html

Abstract: Humans actively share resources with one another to a much greater degree than do other great apes, and much human sharing is governed by social norms of fairness and equity1, 2, 3. When in receipt of a windfall of resources, human children begin showing tendencies towards equitable distribution with others at five to seven years of age4, 5, 6,7. Arguably, however, the primordial situation for human sharing of resources is that which follows cooperative activities such as collaborative foraging, when several individuals must share the spoils of their joint efforts8, 9, 10. Here we show that children of around three years of age share with others much more equitably in collaborative activities than they do in either windfall or parallel-work situations. By contrast, one of humans’ two nearest primate relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), ‘share’ (make food available to another individual) just as often whether they have collaborated with them or not. This species difference raises the possibility that humans’ tendency to distribute resources equitably may have its evolutionary roots in the sharing of spoils after collaborative efforts.

K

Hi K,

Thanks - great ... I had seen, enjoyed and added the video "Frans de Waal: Moral behavior in animals" to a variety of pages WUaS, but am looking to find it now again. I'll look to add some of the other resources you sent, as well, for example, perhaps to the http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peace_and_Social_Justice_Studies.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Nontheist Friends,

One further thought about Bonobo chimpanzees and nontheist Friends and Quakers that came to me partly in SFFM Meeting yesterday:

Bonobo have been having a kind of love fest in what's now called the Congo (the DRC) and nearby in Africa for millions of years now - thanks to evolution by natural selection - with no known fatalities per primatologists, and which species (Pan paniscus) - anthropocentrically - seem to be egalitarian, peaceful, very sexual in all kinds of ways, and matriarchal (in contrast to Pan troglodytes and Homo sapiens, all three of which are very closely related genetically). What can f/Friends learn from our closest genetic relative?

Quakers have a peace testimony (viz. The Elders at Balby) and seem to share a vision of peace - as a kind of culture (I'm an anthropologist) - with no known fatalities (that I know of) in 350 years, perhaps thanks, significantly, to this culture. NtF's bring a naturalist perspective to questions of Quakerism / Friendliness, in part. Again, in what ways might Quakers learn from Bonobo, even perhaps while trying to help save them from becoming bush meat, as a kind of NtF query?

With F/friendly regards,
Scott
