Exploring a digital humanities' approach to a realistic virtual earth in Google Street View

Dear Jean and Hugh,

Very nice to see you over the holidays. And Happy New Year - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/wild-pomegranate-burchellia-bubalina.html ! Did you have a good holiday? Welcome to Miami, Jean (tomorrow, and tomorrow, and ... :)!

Hugh, at the brunch on 1/1/20 (at Ann's in Pgh), your mother suggested communicating a bit about your new director-ship (https://humanities.as.miami.edu/about-the-center/letter-from-the-director/index.html) position in the Humanities' Program at the University of Miami (https://humanities.as.miami.edu/about-the-center/staff-bios/hugh-thomas/index.html), - and brainstorming-wise, potentially about exploring a digital humanities' approach to a realistic virtual earth in Google Street View. How best to make these very easy and useful - and in exploring collaboration with Google even? Could we begin, brainstorming-wise, with your mother's writing her memoirs in the next 2 months in conversation with you in the SideBar of Google Street View? And in conversation with the University of Miami's Humanities' Program?

Jean, am curious about the potential to write one's memoirs in the sidebar of Google Street View, and potentially to add photos/videos to the main part of Street View too, and then to print to book from there. This would also be useful and potentially as easy as in a Word / GDocs' document - and for students of history, and anthropology, and the social sciences, too.

Here's a MIT example of printing from the Google platform, called Paper Phone -

https://twitter.com/techreview/status/1193125242312568833 (accessible from https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/drooping-she-oak-allocasuarina.html) ... And I just Tweeted about this and more:

Print from Google Street View, text in SideBar? Here's an example of printing from Google's PLATFORM, called Paper Phone MIT: https://twitter.com/techreview/status/1193125242312568833 (from https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/drooping-she-oak-allocasuarina.html) with additional benefit of Google Translate in ~100 languages+ & re https://twitter.com/techreview/status/1213553025211600896?s=20 ~

... with additional benefits of Google Translate's ~100 languages. (Paper Phone has a goal of offering a paper to online addiction, so potentially psychotherapeutically; see 'labels').

Developing this approach to Digital Humanities in a realistic virtual earth would probably involve typing into Google Street View in the SideBar - and even from one's smartphone - and as a WRITING research tool especially. (There's much room for parallel STEM developments in Street View in these regards too, and potentially even for genealogical research with genetics).

And with regards too, brainstorming-wise, to a digital humanities' focus of online university libraries potentially in all ~7,111 known living languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - (planned at World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources), and with regard also to openness where MacMillan is closing down a bit -

https://twitter.com/ALALibrary/status/1213554694871760896?s=20

A Google-centric Digital Humanities' approach as part of your Directorship, Hugh, and brainstorming-wise?

Do I have your correct email, Jean? Please let me know if you received this email as well.

Warm regards, Scott

Welcome to Miami, Jean!

As a follow up, with some further ideas, might it be possible for the Humanities' Center at Univ of Miami to develop a Digital Humanities' wing, and in collaboration with Google, Hugh?

And in regards, conceptually, to your writing your memoirs, Jean, in Google Street View, and students doing humanities' work newly in Street View too, it would be like my adding my first book "Naked Harbin Ethnography" to the SideBar in Google Street View (or coming into conversation with it in new ways once in Street View), and then adding photos / videos, patching them together into a realistic virtual earth ... and then potentially printing anew from Street View!

Here's the Harbin Gate as a start in Google Street View ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg (accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ and ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~).

Cheers!, Scott :)

PS: Have blogged a little about this today here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/01/mudpot-exploring-digital-humanities.html ...

Online real, real time Virtual Choir in many time zones?

Dear Bruce and UUCPA, (and FUCoP - 1st UU Church of Pgh choir members),
- Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto
- First UU Church of Pittsburgh

Happy New Year (see letter below)!

Would be interested in exploring singing remotely (from here in Canyon 94516) in an exploratory way, and brain storming-wise on Thursdays and Sundays, for example - and with FUCoP in creative new ways in a different time zone (EST).

With regards to the idea of developing a virtual choir, e.g. building on Eric Whitacre's virtual choir work, and which I've touched on before with UUCPA, I just shared this with some of FUCoP:

"I'm also writing to let you know about this Virtual Choir wiki subject at MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Virtual_Choir - for open teaching and learning, and which I'm developing. World Univ & Sch would like to facilitate online choirs and music-making in real, real time, as well as much else musically :) - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School. (I've sung in the 1st UU choir of Pgh in 2006-2007, and in the Unitarian Universalist Choir of Palo Alto's choir about 2 years ago for a semester, which is near Stanford). It would be great to explore World Univ & Sch ONLINE musically as it develops further.

UUCPA, did I read correctly that you might be heading toward real, real time online music-making with a new device on the piano?

I'd also like to e-introduce you to Kris Rust, musical director of 1st UU Church Pgh and some of the singers in this UU choir whom I heard sing on Christmas Eve, which was great!

Happy singing, and am hoping you're all feeling better soon.

Musical regards, Scott

Brakeley Briscoe fundraising? - and World University and School

Hi M,

Very nice to hear your variety of thoughts yesterday evening in words, and with regards to the complexities of family too. You're smart and I appreciate too your nuanced caring understandings.  Glad we may be communicating over the upcoming years, and centuries even!

Just sent this below to Alden (thought I had included Marianne's email too, but it turned out to be Alden's 2nd email), George Brakeley and Larry and all of Brakeley Briscoe at info @ BrakeleyBriscoe ...

Am hoping I hear back positively from George first within 2 business days (by Tuesday afternoon) or even today!

Love, Scott

Brakeley Briscoe & World University and  School

Dear Executive Chair Brakeley, President Marianne Briscoe, Ph. D., and Executive VP Alden F. Briscoe, & Brakeley Briscoe Associates,

I'm reaching out to you at Brakeley Briscoe, and as president of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, in some need for your fundraising and management expertise - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/content/history/ - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/bio/abriscoe/ - as well as your capital campaign strategies - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/capital_campaigns/.

If we proceed, and as friends of Alden and Marianne, I wonder if they might play backbencher or weighty Friends' roles (in a Friendly / Quaker sense) in all of this. I'm also including Larry Viehland  in this email, who is the Chair of the Board, and Chief Financial Officer of World University and School.

I'm attaching a PDF of World University and School's (WUaS) 10% fundraising facilitation letter for your information, and as a starting place for related conversation. Here too is the

World University Foundation wiki page - ... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation.

How might we best proceed? Shall we explore heading together toward the first $1 billion, and then talk about a trillion? World University and School's initial need is for $5,000 to begin licensing with the state of California's BPPE as WUaS seeks our 2nd online undergraduate class in the autumn of 2020 for free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric Bachelor degrees, first in English.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you, Executive Chair Brakeley.

Sincerely, Scott MacLeod

Doug,

Nice to meet you with my mother on Lingrove near the Xmas party.

At Xmas Eve dinner at Koehler's I mentioned connecting with Robert Zembowicz on Twitter, who is the CTO at Vanguard Mutual Funds I think, and Tweets much about machine learning - https://twitter.com/rzembo ...

Here are some ways that Robert Zembowicz and World University and School may head together with regards to machine learning, particularly in the Google ecosystem -
https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1200228375786221568?s=20

Check out too the Machine Learning at MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Machine_Learning (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) - and the MIT OCW courses that will eventually be for credit.

And here's a kind of e-introduction:

Fascinating @rzembo @6nop & re @WorldUnivAndSch in Google ecosystem #MachineLearning #ReinforcementLearning?  https://twitter.com/rzembo/status/1137763790387326976https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1200232823757496325?s=20

And please give my greetings to Jennifer, with whom it was great to talk at the party.

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Best,
Scott
