What is mysticism?
The Zen Circle is the highest that can be said about God. Moses: "The name of God is to be (I Am)." God is harmony. God is a mystery.
In mysticism, we learn that there is a higher, holistic reality. This reality can be understood as a higher consciousness that encompasses everything and permeates everything. It can be seen as personal and impersonal. It may be referred to as God. There are many names and descriptions for it in various religions, such as Nirvana (emptiness/unity) in Buddhism, Brahman (the absolute, the ultimate reality) in Hinduism or communion (light, Holy Spirit, spiritual energy) in Christianity. Almost all founders of religions have had enlightenment experiences. God is a fact of experience on the spiritual path. In Buddhism, enlightenment is central and in Christianity the center is God (God-consciousness). These are two different paths to the same goal. The goal is a mystery, which brings together many different spiritual ways.

Mysticism is the pursuit of communion with, identity with, or conscious awareness of an ultimate reality, divinity, spiritual truth, or God. For me, Meister Eckhart is dry as philology, and textual history, and academically, university-wise ... e.g. in the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München - LMU Seminar I took in Germany in the spring of 1982 (in a Reed College academic study abroad program)) ... whereas Quaker mysticism for me at the time as a ~22 year old - eg. Howard Brinton's "Friends for 300 Years," for example - opened a way to a kind of direct experience with ecstasy or bliss explorations, and I lived with a Quaker family in Germany for my last 2.5 months there in 1982, in the town of Garching, north of Munich, with Eckhart & Lisl Krueger, and family ...
