Dear Profs. Benson and Majumdar,

Thanks for your far-reaching conversation yesterday on 'The Future of Energy' at Stanford - https://events.stanford.edu/events/818/81888/. And very nice to meet you in passing at the close of this. I asked about the possibility of developing a realistic virtual earth to address all of the questions you touched upon - and even as a kind of engine. Am thinking conceptually of Google Street View with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth with TensorFlow+.

What I have in mind might be summed up in this Tweet to MIT Prof Richard Braatz, after his Stanford ERE talk:

Thnx @MITChemE Richard Braatz https://events.stanford.edu/events/800/80002/ … OMNI-SCALE SIMULATION question? Limitations to adding your talk to StreetView wTensorFlow at atom level for lithium ion batteries machine learning w  equations, first-principles in #RealisticVirtualEarth for #PhysicalDigital?

And here are some followup emails I sent to Alan Burnham after his Stanford ERE talk -

https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/double-flowered-world-univ-schs-live.html  - about approaches to developing a realistic virtual earth as STEM field sites and classrooms for oil and geothermal, (but especially for future of energy questions) ... and with a new method I'm calling STEM ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.

What I have in mind by an editable realistic virtual earth involves not only energy questions, but also my actual-virtual ethnographic field site (think Google Street View with Second Life / OpenSim / Sansar ):

For example, visit the Harbin gate here virtually - and "walk" down the road "4 miles" to Middletown, CA, and "amble" around the streets there (accessible from: https://twitter.com/HarbinBook and http://bit.ly/HarbinBook) ... the beginnings of a realistic virtual Harbin for soaking too :) Part of my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, this realistic virtual Harbin - and EARTH - will get better and better with time.

Is there a way we might be able to focus some of these realistic virtual earth questions re Stanford ERE post-docs and graduate students interested in modeling and lithium ion battery developments, and perhaps Logan, too, Sally, who asked you yesterday about related machine learning questions right before I asked you about a realistic virtual earth. I've been a bit in touch about all of this with Anirudh Allam, Maartje Boon, David McColl and others in Stanford ERE.

Arun, did you happen to meet the Maz.....s in the DC / Baltimore area when you were in the Obama administration? (https://profiles.stanford.edu/arun-majumdar). Pin Mazumdar has long worked in the federal government, and is one of my best friends from high school in Pittsburgh, PA. His parents, Mainak and Sati, are also now living in Baltimore, and I visited and stayed with them in Kolkata about 5 years ago. I was glad to stay with Sid for 2 nights in Baltimore over New Years, as well.

Am developing startup online universities and schools - World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in ~300 languages with CC-4 MIT OCW in 5 languages - to address some of these questions as well. Here is where major online universities in each countries' main and official languages for free-to-students' online degrees - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - will emerge.

Thanks again for your great 'Reflections on The Future of Energy,' and very nice to meet you.

Best regards, Scott

David (Chester Upham),

Thanks for your interesting Stanford ERE talk - https://events.stanford.edu/events/813/81366/ . I  asked about the possibilities for a realistic virtual earth re machine learning and your research, both as A) abstracted knowledge (eg equations and diagrams in realistic virtual earth), and B) contextualized knowledge (same with regard to specific places and contexts in realistic virtual earth) - my follow up question.

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Best, Scott

Hi David (McColl),

Nice to meet and talk with you at https://events.stanford.edu/events/813/81366/

You'll find here MIT DCI's Neha Narula talking on a panel in the last hour or so of recent day-long MIT Blockchain with Robotic Systems' conference - some about cryptocurrency with blockchain questions .... https://youtu.be/OcSYWWuO6rU ... accessible from  https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/12/tunguska-russia-asteroid-1908.html ...

And you'll find here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/double-flowered-world-univ-schs-live.html - some emails I sent to Stanford ERE's Alan Burnham, who was sitting close to us, and asked the first question ... about approaches to developing a realistic virtual earth as STEM field sites and classrooms for everything ... with a new method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy ..

Let's stay in touch.

Best,
Scott

Hi Scott,

It was nice to meet you as well. This is interesting stuff! Thanks for passing it on. Let's certainly stay in touch.

Hi David,

Thanks for your email (am never sure what makes it into spam).

I blogged a bit about all of this here -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/01/browne-grandiceps-stanford-future-of.html?m=0

How best to develop a realistic virtual for states' and firms' carbon deals is a further interesting question ... with block chain ledger with a possible single cryptocurrency backed by 200 national states (and with robotics' systems per the MIT conference) - and per your studies, ... and as the science and STEM with machine learning emerges in a realistic virtual earth for atmosphere, earth and planetary sciences (e.g. re https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/earth-atmospheric-and-planetary-sciences/), in new arts or ways of representing this knowledge virtually.

And how best to teach such in an online course at MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch?

Looking forward to talking further about this.

Regards, Scott

And as I was talking with a friend after a theoretical physics' Stanford talk on Monday - https://events.stanford.edu/events/815/81504/ - too, much of this idea for a realistic virtual earth at the street view, cellular and atomic levels has to do with new ways of representing knowledge (beyond text, diagrams, equations, statistics, etc.) ... philosophically especially.
