‘We failed these kids'
School districts across the state have struggled with the abrupt shift to online learning. But Worcester has had an unusually rocky experience. Interviews with more than 20 parents, students, teachers and school committee members, and review of a half dozen district documents paint a portrait of a district focused on process and procedure at a time when nimbleness was imperative.

We do not want to leave the virologists alone in interpreting the situation. That's why we ask in the  series "What are you thinking about?"   leading researchers in the humanities and social sciences, what to think about in the crisis and what they are now worrying about. Elisabeth von Thadden asks the questions. The philosopher and Leibniz laureate Rainer Forst, 55, teaches political theory and philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, where he heads the Research Center for Normative Orders. Following the unexpected launch of the world’s first digital currency, Bitcoin, in 2009, there has always been an alternative for nomadic travellers and expats seeking a universal form of payment for goods and services. The government will lift travel restrictions in July, but the situation in Sweden does not allow for relaxation - "We do not give a general hug recommendation," said Minister Kiuru
The government will withdraw age-based recommendations to avoid the coronavirus, with people over the age of 70 receiving the same recommendation as others. The telework recommendation will also end at the beginning of August.

Government’s timetable for easing travel restrictions disappoints travel industry
THE NEWS that Finland will continue to scale down travel restrictions next month has been met with a mixed reaction from travel industry companies, according to Helsingin Sanomat.
Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo (Greens) and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Greens) on Tuesday announced the government will remove internal border controls and quarantine requirements for countries that have reported no more than eight new coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past two weeks on 13 July.

What I've been watching

Over the past week, I have watched the six-part HBO miniseries The Plot Against America, which came out in March. It is based on the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same title and tells an alternative history in which FDR is defeated in 1940 by the fascist-sympathizing Charles Lindbergh through the eyes of a Jewish family living in Newark, NJ. Compelling story, well acted. It is the best piece of television I have seen in years.
