WUaS is proceeding with licensing in the state of Pennsylvania with the department of education, and in tandem, then beginning the accreditation process with the Middle States Commission for Higher Education (MSCHE).

Licensing fees will be $5,000 with the state of PA, and the MSCHE Pre-Application fee is $1,500. If everything goes well, this will allow us to enroll large numbers of students at accrediting World Univ & Sch this September, and, accredited, seek reimbursement from departments of education not only from 50 US states, but also from all ~200 countries, per student per year, and thanks to the CC-4 licensing of OCW.MIT.EDU, as well as the free CC-4 licensed "CS First with Google at WUaS" Scratch programming language course - https://csfirst.withgoogle.com/s/en/home - for example.

Title: How much are large language models narrowing the gap to human intelligence?
Abstract: ChatGPT was released in late October 2022. It is a public interface to GPT-3, an artificial neural network with 175 billion parameters trained on terabytes of text from the internet. It is paradigmatic of the class of Large Language Models (LLMs) based on deep (multilayer) learning. ChatGPT provides a simple public interface that allows users to type in queries (aka “prompts”) and receive multi-paragraph responses where appropriate. It has many surprising capacities such as being able to generate computer programs for specific tasks, writing doggerel about mundane subjects in the style of famous people, and generating reasonable albeit pedestrian syllabi for college courses. It can also write answers to typical academic examination questions that are sometimes factually wrong or conceptually incoherent, but frequently highly plausible and often accurate enough for the purpose. As such, then, it does not differ from much of the writing that we, as educators, see at the undergraduate level, and many of its essays would easily pass muster at the level of a B grade in an introductory course. This has led some commentators to suggest that education as we know it is over. Less hyperbolically, many commentators have argued that it marks the end of the take-home exam. I will argue that this is an overreaction, although some adjustments to our assignments may be necessary. But more interestingly, the way in which ChatGPT shows its limitations exposes real gaps between the cutting edge of LLMs and the kind of self-monitoring intelligence which we aim to foster and to assess in our students. I will draw out the lessons from these failings for how we should think about the role of metacognition and wisdom in the kind of intelligence that most humans are capable of displaying, but which is absent from the best that LLMs currently provide.

Title: “A quantitative field theoretical for spontaneous collapse”
Abstract: Any model of spontaneous collapse of the wave function in quantum mechanics must involve alterations of the standard Schrödinger equation to allow non-unitary dynamics. In the past two years I have developed a model for a change to the quantum field theory for fermions to allow for nonlocal spontaneous collapse of quantum states. This model has the features that it conserves energy and particle number and works for many-body states of identical particles, unlike some previously proposed models for spontaneous collapse. It does have some odd implications for relativistic causality. I will describe this model in mostly non-mathematical terms, and compare it to other approaches to spontaneous collapse, as well as to the many-worlds and Copenhagen interpretations.

Mapping Spiritual Progress: From Byzantium to Bunyan
The deepest center of our being, spirituality, is commonly described in spatial, or even geographical terms. For example, it is said to provide an inner ‘path’ of self-discovery, a ‘direction’ in life, a sense of connectedness with the ‘cosmos’. Christian spirituality carries a distinctively spatial dimension in which the notion of movement is key. Taking up the cross and ‘following’ Christ implies a way to be traveled; it implies an inner journey to be undertaken, a direction to be maintained, a destination to be kept in sight. Onward movement toward that destination corresponds to spiritual progress.
The way in which this journey has been visualized, however, has changed over the centuries and across denominations: from the Patristic progress through the archetypal wilderness of the Old Testament to Dante’s sophisticated cosmography and Bunyan’s everyday landscapes of seventeenth-century rural England. The movements and often complex topographies of these spiritual journeys do not only reflect inner states. They also reflect shifting perceptions of space and of the environment.
This talk introduces different ways in which spiritual journeys have been mapped on the landscape and eventually translated into cartographic representations. It shows how inner topographies are ultimately projections of the outer worlds inhabited by the ‘wayfarer’.
