Hi M,

Thinking about Dad today on his birthday.

Power just went out in Canyon where I live, so no wi-fi from dish on roof, but I'm getting an internet signal thru my phone carrier. Since no electricity, will head out soon since various batteries run down quickly.

You might enjoy these photos of friends Stein and Metta Mathiesen from Norway
https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1090641521236295681. A professor of anthropology too, he studies the Sami peoples of the arctic. They visited me in Canyon in Jan 2016. May blog about them today ...

Glad too to be hearing the Chancellor of California Community Colleges (possibly ~130 public colleges ... actually now 115, with the new "Online Community College 115") at Stanford today -

Happy birthday, Dad!

Hoping you have a good day. How are you?

L,
Scott

Hi M,

My Norwegian friends (Stein and Mette, where he's a professor of Anthropology at Arctic University of Norway in Tromso and studies the Saami in the far north) and his son Kristoffer, M&S's first and new granddaughter, Serine, and her mother Miriam, are coming over tomorrow on Easter (happy Easter!) which is great, but I'll clean my house today, a little earlier than anticipated.

I met M & K, S, and M & S yesterday at a small "Berkeley Smoke" dive for ribs in Berkeley yesterday, after heading to Stein and Mette's place for the year, where the woman's husband who ran "Berkeley Smoke" had made a key film about Ishi who was an Indian Berkeley Anthropologist Kroeber (the UC building is named after him) found half emaciated in northern California around 1900 and the last of his people and brought back to the SF Bay Area to live, and Kroeber learned a lot from Ishi.

The story of Ishi and that the founder of Harbin is named Ish or Ishvara (a minor divinity meaning Divine Commander in the Hindu pantheon - which I understand in a hippy sense) may be something I build on over time, in sharing about Harbin, because the story of Ishi has captured many people's imaginations in northern California and around the world. The story of Ishi, for example, was written by Theodora Kroeber, Alfred Kroeber's wife, and their daughter is Ursula K. Le Guin who wrote "The Wizard of Earth Sea" trilogy as well as "Always Coming Home," a book I write about in "Naked Harbin Ethnography" :).

How are you and what are you up to today? Soon to clean house as well as continue to publish my book in a new press ...

Scott
