Hi Craig, Brooklyn St House Friends, Reedies, Reed College community folks, All,

These attached pictures just popped up today in Google Photo on my smartphone, And I thought you might enjoy seeing them ... How are you all doing?

Thanks Craigly for text messaging yesterday morning out of the blue from Anacortes, Washington, and sharing your beautiful garden picture with artichokes, corn and poppies from last summer (which garden is thriving - thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and time at home for gardening & physical movement even )! :)

The pictures are from March 2008 on a visit to Reed College (and eastern Oregon near La Grande I think to visit family)

Oregon 'hippy communities' in first half of 1980s ~

3 cooperatives?

1
Alpha Farm -
The Alpha Bit bookstore-cafe in Mapleton, Oregon, 200+ acre Alpha Farm's 'satellite' in this 'big city' (where Alpha's doing the mail route, and carpentry, helped with financial sustainability) ... And seems still to be a co-op intentional community, as institution even or organization ...

Looks like Alpha Farm is still happening in the Intentional Community directory - https://www.ic.org/directory/alpha-farm/ - and which began around 1973 using secular 'Quaker' decision making re Friends' monthly business meeting I think
Founded by Caroline Estes and 3 other hippies leaving the Philadelphia Quaker world

2
2202 SE Brooklyn Street House, Portland, Oregon, w Betsy from next door! -
Reed House (mostly with Reed student communards, & a nice bicycle ride away through winter rideable Portland to campus at 3303 SE Woodstock Blvd  !:) -
(where I lived on and off for at least 2 and a half years - while also (twice - but not from the Brooklyn House the first time) hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, studying in Munich for 13 months, working in Mart & Ella Pool's anthroposophical Estonian farm-in-a-back-yard garden and in a native species' Cyclamen Nursery in Beaverton, and re some of our involvement in the Cathedral Forest Action Group, carrying out nonviolent civil disobedience to save Oregon old growth forest, and re involvement in the community of Multnomah Monthly Meeting (where I was active in Quaker Meetings both in Portland, Oregon and in Munich, Germany)

3
People's Food Coop -
(which is also still going), and still kinda beautiful, and a market for alternative networks of goods and organic food stuff - which are significant alternative economies!)

Interested in online free PhD degrees (7 year average time to completion)? Know of friends interested in online free-to-students' Bachelor degrees (4 year avg time to completion)?
A bit of news !
CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch
Is Now PARTNERING with edX (FOUNDED by MIT and HARVARD), and seeking to offer PhDs beginning this autumn too! - and WUaS also uses a (non-theist) f/Friendly Monthly Business Meeting process, loosely conducted in the manner of Quakers, and has for nearly a decade :)  ... WUaS isn't structured legally like a cooperative in the USA (but is 3 legal entities here ... but may explore becoming structured further as a cooperative in the US and other countries regarding distributing a single cryptocurrency such as the "Stanford Mine Pi" digital currency - and even to alleviate poverty among all 7. 8 billion people! ~ https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/UBI :)

WUaS will be free for matriculating students for online accrediting Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD and IB high school degrees potentially and in all 200 countries (per Olympics) and in their main and official languages, - and in all 7,117 known living languages as wiki schools -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - for open teaching and learning (which are free to use, and freely editable or teachable / learnable to / from:).

WUaS is seeking to become the online MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet in remarkable flourishing and visionary ways, learning- and fun & very creatively knowledge generation-wise ... And flourishing re wiki people to people teaching and learning too ;) ... & partly in 1 single realistic virtual earth for everything and see related #HashTags here -

https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1325115359515439104?s=19 - including at the cellular and molecular levels (think Google Street View with time slider / Tensorflow for AI / Translate for languages and with realistic avatar bots and group build-ability).

Would love to 'reed' :) your news 😃 ... Here's my 2020 Season's Greetings' letter again ~ http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/twinpods-123120-see-122320-too-seasons.html?m=0 ... & 2019 too

Yay for flourishing cultures of learning ... and both excellent MIT-centric, as well as wiki open about areas we love and can wiki- teach or learn uniquely about.

Sending love, Scott

Craig's and my textings from yesterday :) - thanks Craigly for texting!

The gym roofs at Reed collapsed in the snow last month. My heart breaks as I remember being there

Scott -
Hi Craig - sounds dramatic, and it's where Carla teaches ... The Performing Arts Center could be a model for a rebuild? Time for Reed perhaps to go 'virtual' re gym though? Could the impoverished MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch collaborate in this I wonder? (But Reed seems to have a number of serious ethical issues, about which I've whistle blown in the past year or two ... and I've asked to be off their mailing lists ... Hope they come to observe the law).  How are you? -Scott

Good to hear :) & okay isolation-wise in the coronavirus pandemic?

Craig -
My work didn't change much and I love it. How are you?

Scott -
Congratulations after many years again on becoming a doctor!

Ongoing creative time here, a little too isolated, seeking life partner, but pretty good :) How are you otherwise ?

Best garden ever thanks to COVID last year and will be even better this year

Glad to read ... All organic,  biodynamic especially, - heirloom varieties too? Hi to Pat ☺

Artichokes in early March in WA? You have a green thumb indeed :)

Or is your great garden picture from midsummer 2020 with corn and poppies too?

Hi Nadia, and Craig, and Reedies' many, All,

Very nice to be in communication with you. Thanks so so much for the picture and note, Nadia - with your husband Elliott and in front of a pool, and as a teacher in the DC area! (Good to know too that emails are going through!:) Thanks too for your text messages, Craig!

Have blogged about some of this cooperative thinking here, - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/bwindi-impenetrable-forest-uganda.html - and much more regarding augmented reality, and genetic engineering too! Along these genetic engineering lines, how viable will aging reversal genetic drug therapies become (and thanks in part to the coronavirus pandemic), I wonder?

Here's Harvard Medical School / MIT Professor of Genetics' George Church in a minute long video -
"How soon could humans reverse the aging process with genetic engineering?"
https://youtu.be/bnCEIPQFNnk
(See, too, the longevity label in my blog, albeit 'aging reversal' is a better term for this - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity - and when will some of us culture and language-bearing human primates begin to live longer than 122 years of age, re Jeanne Calment, who was the oldest documented living person I've heard of).

Some updates on Alpha Farm, which has sold the Alpha Bits' cafe-bookstore in 2018 ...

Society has changed since 1972, but Caroline Estes is still hopeful

(And while the hippy word seems scarce sometimes when I look for it in writings about the 1960s and '70s - and early 1980s too - in my academic readings, and regarding also my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" 2016 book, this article has a bit of a hippy vibe -

Community at its finest: Alpha Farm provides a tight-knit cooperative outside Eugene

Will we be able to revist Reed in a #realisticvirtualearthforhistory - https://twitter.com/hashtag/realisticvirtualearthforhistory?src=hashtag_click - and interact with avatar bots from the early 1980s there in conversation even? :)

"Now how best to head to #VirtualOregon in #1970s re a kind of #OregonVision in a #RealisticVirtualEarth ? - but probably not in a #RealisticVirtualHarbin since this would be in #virtualCalifornia :) ... and in  great #realisticvirtualearthforhistory ...

Hi Ed, Ma, Marc, Pin, Tym, Jim,

Pin, good to find your Harvard Crimson writings online ! ~

https://www.thecrimson.com/writer/606/Siddhartha__Mazumdar/page/3/

How are you all doing? I hope this finds you well (WUaS is seeking to offer online ~7-year PhDs too beginning this Sept 1 2021, and just received 2 emails yesterday in these regards from the WUaS edX representative ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/03/pike-national-forest.html)

A bit of brainstorming here:

Could this cleaned up Axolotl amphibian -

And look, someone added genetically its 'antennae' to this bird -
https://twitter.com/ReaderMeter/status/1357494302062960643?s=20 - around its neck and its tail it appears! Wild ! :)

(And apparently the axolotl salamander species has the remarkable ability to regenerate severed limbs! )

So, here's Stewart Brand (editor of the Whole Earth Catalog in the late '1960s ... ) - retweeted on George Church's Twitter - saying the Harvard Medical School is hiring someone to raise eventually extinct wooly mammoths -
https://twitter.com/stewartbrand/status/1367170240841326592?s=20  (https://twitter.com/geochurch and Stanford Law Prof and genetics' expert had retweeted this too!) - for $75,000 per year plus $25,000 for expenses. Wow that's a lot of money ....

What would happen if one could bioengineer extinct woolly mammoth tusks, like in Stewart Brand's picture, into living elephants, and as much woolly mammoth further DNA ... WILD WILD WILD ... like the axolotl-bird picture from Dario Taroborelli (a former Wikipedia senior person too, originally from Italy)

So how would this work in a single realistic virtual earth for species? And how about in this 1 realistic virtual earth for genetics at cell and molecular levels to actually do the same bioengineering / editing that created the  axolotl-bird .... wild ... (and re aging reversal genetic drugs, will we even be able to give such creatures as the AXOLOTL-BIRD hybrid a syringe of aging reversal drug, and make it grow younger ... if not into a baby, let along an embryonic form).

And will WUaS students too be able to create with the Scratch drag and drop programming language newly AUGMENTED REALITY in POKEMON GO computer gaming of AXOLOTLs in brand new species-related ways? Do some Do It Yourself bioengineering themselves eventually too - and even on themselves, and with aging reversal genetic engineering? Who knows?

Regulations from FDA or similar needed ... and here's the Regulatory Review re covid-19
 - https://twitter.com/TheRegReview/status/1367972948968083462?s=20 - out of the univ of Illinois, at the top of Stanford Law Hank Greely's Twitter presently ... https://twitter.com/HankGreelyLSJU ...

More about Pokemon Go Augmented Reality here from its CEO (and after I received updated terms of service from my phone carrier T-Mobile, after emailing you the Pokemon Go Terms of Service below, and preceding my monthly bill of a low, I think, $82 as well ... ToS from phone company re privacy, and phone company's culture, seems more important re security, than Pokemon Go's, n'est-ce pas, and as I write while living in a 'safe house' possibly for calling the Moraga police twice last summer about illegal activity at 670 Ridgecrest Road, Canyon 94516 ... ) -

John Hanke -
"It all started with a map. It was five years ago today that a small team of bright-eyed individuals—it must have been 35 of us—ran with that idea to form Niantic and explore what could be possible when combining a map with augmented reality. ...

What remains at the heart of why we do what we do is our belief that technology—augmented reality, specifically—can make a profound positive impact on the world. We create moments and memories, augmenting the world around us in ways that encourage exploration, exercise, and social interaction."

Am in the dark about what's happening next here regarding where to live, and what legal events could be shaping this even? ... Could I possibly move back into Canyon on April 1, 2021 even? Or on July 1, 2021 ... with new energy saving's systems installed also in the meantime along the lines of what Steve Willett in northern Idaho and his business ...

Hi Ed, Ma, Marc, Pin, Tym, Jim,

Thanks so much for visiting me in Canyon 94516, Ed, Ma, Pin, Tym, (Marc & Jim virtually in a sense too).

And I would love to see herds of genetically engineered Wooly Mammoths in adjacent-to-Canyon-94516-at-670-Ridgecrest Indian Valley, which DNA has been bioengineered with living species of pachyderms (https://twitter.com/TerenceLeungSF/status/1368420110818406402?s=20) eg for Wooly Mammoth tusks, size perhaps, and as many interesting Wooly Mammoth adaptations as possible, for learnings' sake. ... as PokemonGo augmented reality especially!

What have been the mammals that have roamed these California landscapes over the last 2 million years - and could we see them in a realistic virtual earth for evolutionary biology - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForEvolutionaryBiology?src=hashtag_click - and play PokemonGo too .. .and make new Augmented Reality as well ? You'll find here again a beginning group-generated Pokemon Go syllabus from 2016 - https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1365418867263238149?s=20 (thanks in part to MIT Media Lab PhD, and Harvard Prof of Education, Karen Brennan!)

But perhaps such individual wooly mammoths, and also herds of genetically engineered Wooly Mammoths, could take the form of ACTUAL-VIRTUAL pachyderms-ExtinctWoolyMammoths in the back of my REI Glacier Glasses and as newly engineered as Digital Masks - regarding Materials' Science advances - in order for scientists and VR-researchers to be able to work with and study living elephants with mammoth DNA in Indian Valley (from wherever the actual genetically engineered elephants might be ... eg in Africa or in India even or in the San Diego Zoo) ... and even as holograms, as hologram herds. So, all in Indian Valley regarding an actual-virtual developing digital conversation - https://twitter.com/hashtag/ActualVirtual?src=hashtag_click - and even re #PokemonGo and #WUaSLegoRobotics -
https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1365419095982702595?s=20 (Lions, and Saber Toothed Tigers and Bears, o my)

And glad to have heard back from you, Ed, this morning - and I'll now extend my lease here on Arlington Blvd until June 30th, 2021, another 3 months, ... and interesting too, as I shared with my mother this morning, that  I "got a spam message just now in this email account about 'government owned housing' curiously ... am hoping this bodes well re even my moving back into 670 Ridgecrest in Canyon ... to be seen :)) ... ... and am glad too the law is playing a new role in my rental agreements here on Arlington (since Canyon may have been something of a lawless place in recent decades - ie my former ... wanted no paperwork such as a lease, and I paid in cash for example, between us since late 2008 ... ) ... Glad too I called the local Moraga police twice last summer 2020 to report illegal activity at 670A Ridgecrest by my landlord, I hypothesize, since he had the spare keys for one.

I hope this finds you all well ...  How are you all?
