Pi crypto & UBI - Hack for Social Impact 2025 SF
Nice to meet you yesterday at 'Hack for Social Impact - Second Year' in SF yesterday.
Regarding free World University and School / WUaS and Stanford Mine Pi cryptocurrency (with which WUaS has a parenting email), here, Steve, is the "pi crypto and ubi" information I mentioned sending to you, which we talked about yesterday. How best could the Homeless Connect Project you're working on at Hack for Social Impact 2025 SF best distribute Pi cryptocurrency free money daily to all the homeless in the greater SF Bay Area? And could you, Steve, become the account manager somehow in this and in communication with Cher, who is a Google Project Lead, and as key organizer of Hack for Social Impact?
Scott
Pi Network and UBI
- Infrastructure for Distribution: Pi's architecture, which includes a large user base (over 60 million "Pioneers"), a Know Your Customer (KYC) verification system, and an integrated wallet, could serve as an efficient, low-cost platform for governments or other entities to distribute UBI or digital welfare to citizens.
- Decentralized Welfare: The network's structure could enable automated, accountable reward distribution and community governance, potentially reducing corruption risks associated with traditional welfare systems. [1, 6]
Current Status of Pi Crypto
- Enclosed Mainnet: The Pi Network is currently in an "Enclosed Mainnet" phase. This means the blockchain is live, but a firewall prevents external connectivity, and official Pi coins cannot be traded for other cryptocurrencies or fiat on major external exchanges.
- "Mining" Process: Users "mine" Pi coins via a mobile app by checking in daily, which is an energy-efficient method using the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) rather than energy-intensive proof-of-work. This process is largely an engagement tool to build the user base before the open mainnet launch.
- Limited Value: Due to its enclosed nature, the Pi coin has no official market value yet. The listings on some exchanges are for IOUs (I Owe You) or speculative futures, which are not the actual Pi coins that can be withdrawn from the network.
- Future Prospects: The project aims to transition to an "Open Mainnet" in the future, which would remove the firewall and allow for full connectivity, external trading, and broad dApp integration. [2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11]

Our goal is to foster lasting impact by encouraging teams to continue developing their projects beyond the event.
Last year’s hackathon was held in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in San Francisco. One of the winning teams presented their solution at COP26 in Saudi Arabia (the UNCCD’s decision-making conference), while another secured investment from Y Combinator.
This year, we’re proud to have sponsorship from leading technology companies including Eudia, Google, Bild AI (YC W25, last year’s winner), and ElevenLabs.
Please find the flyer below.
Looking forward to seeing many of you there.
