Non-theist f/Friends/Quakers and NtFs,

Just seeking to celebrate Charles Darwin's birthday - with you NtFs - whose thinking has some relevance for me in my non-theistic f/Friendliness at least.

Happy birthday, Charles Darwin (on Feb 12, 1809),

Some related Tweets:

This is how Darwin applied the ideas of economist Malthus to nature and let his theory of evolution evolve for more than twenty years. (Sponsored content from )

"I am dying by inches from not having anybody to talk to about insects..."--Charles Darwin, 1828.

Today is Darwin's birthday, aka #DarwinDay. More than a century and a half after he published his theory of evolution, a @pewresearch survey found, for highly religious Americans, views on evolution depend on how they are asked about it. https://pewrsr.ch/2Bnb0AV

All of which I posted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch

Have heard in the past that Darwin had Quaker relatives re Wedgwood porcelain family, but only found here that his family was both Unitarian and abolitionist - https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/big-history-project/life/modal/a/charles-darwin-a-biography .

What do you think this means: "I am dying by inches ..."? ... (from not having anybody to talk to about insects..."--Charles Darwin, 1828.)

Friendly regards,
Scott

Dear NtFs,

Seeking too to find out how Darwin felt about his theory of evolution by natural selection, as well as his relationship 'culturally' re Quakers/Friends -

“That is a distortion of the truth” -
“Racked by guilt at replacing the doctrines of the Church with a joyless vision of man as a shaven primate in an amoral universe, Darwin retired into obscurity. He repented his blasphemy on his deathbed and was buried as a venerable and almost forgotten savant whose work - like that of so many famous scientists - had been completed while he was still a young man” ... according to this Guardian article - https://www.theguardian.com/science/2009/jan/19/charles-darwin ...

Found these items ...
“At first glance, Charles Darwin seems an unlikely revolutionary”
“While Darwin’s ideas initially challenged long-held scientific and religious belief systems, …”

Darwin on a Godless Creation: "It's like confessing to a murder"

Your NtF f/Friendly Quaker abolitionist (who's parents met and married in an Unitarian UU church in Ohio),

Maps

Hi Chet,

Thanks for your email, and nice to meet you as well. Yes, perhaps we'll have chance to talk at - https://events.stanford.edu/events/817/81780/. (I just learned however that "Conference Venue is now at capacity. Upon registration, you will be added to the waiting list.") Thanks too for your edifying and very interesting talk today - Talk with Chet Van Duzer: New Research on Urbano Monte's 1587 World Map ... https://events.stanford.edu/events/825/82555/ - with such beautiful map slides.

In the second half of this blog entry - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/wandering-albatross-heres-mention-of.html - and throughout my blog in the "virtual world" label, you'll see where I'm heading with a realistic virtual earth, and re researchers adding their STEM and Humanities' research to such a realistic virtual reality. For example, in what ways could these researchers, or someone else, add the maps in this paper - https://pangea.stanford.edu/ERE/db/GeoConf/papers/SGW/2019/Bjornsson1.pdf (from these papers - https://pangea.stanford.edu/ERE/db/GeoConf/Schedule.php - also in my blog entry) - to a realistic virtual earth, such as Google Streetview / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow and then begin to research further about these? (Am planning this realistic virtual earth as part of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School) Perhaps we can talk about this as well tomorrow.

For example,
Visit the Harbin gate in Google Street View here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ where you can "walk" down the road '4 miles' to Middletown and 'amble' around the streets there, if inclined. And add some photos or videos if you have them - re a new social science method I'm developing - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - think ethnography as interpretive social science practices, wiki (think fast adding / curating of Wikipedia) and co-building of a virtual world (like in Sansar / Second Life /Open Simulator with avatar bots) but not cartoon-esque, rather realistically.

Hoping to talk with you tomorrow.

Best wishes, Scott

Stanford - Sustainability and Self-Driving with Lyft and Ford @ The Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Series

Dear Raj, John, and Pedram,

Thanks for your excellent Stanford conversation - "Sustainability and Self-Driving with Lyft and Ford @ The Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Series" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/817/81763/ . Nice to meet you as well.

Am curious where your thinking will head with regards to computer modeling and simulations - and potentially, conceptually, in a realistic virtual earth. Am thinking Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow and at the cellular and atomic levels (e.g. for battery design etc.). How might this build on, or integrate with, the modeling which Lyft and Ford already use?

At MIT OCW-centric World University and School, of which I'm the founder, here are the "Electric and Hybrid Vehicles" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Electric_and_Hybrid_Vehicles wiki subject and the "Virtual Worlds" wiki subjects - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Virtual_Worlds - (accessible from https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) where many courses for credit, and potentially with students (hopefully with Stanford graduate student instructors teaching online 'sections' from students from around the world in many languages), will emerge.

And, for example, imagine vehicles (Lyft & Ford?), conceptually, driving up and down the Harbin Springs' road to and from Middletown re planning for sustainability and the environment, the above, and your innovative thinking, extended to all ~200 countries:
(Harbin Hot Springs is my actual-virtual, physical-digital ethnographic field site).

How are Ford and Lyft leveraging computer modeling in all of these regards and conceptually re a Google-centric realistic virtual earth?

Looking forward to communicating further about all of this with time. And very nice to meet you. Thanks for your excellent ideas.

Thank you,
Scott

Stanford Uyghur event

Dear Yasheng,

Very nice to meet you at the Stanford Uyghur event "Detention Camps in the 21st Century: The Uyghur Crisis Explained" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/825/82547/

Let's stay in touch about:

Regards, Scott
