Dear Zach, AoIR community, all,

Thanks so much for organizing this on 'AoIR Preconference: In Defense of the Commons' Oct 14, 2026.

And here's a question I asked in this -

A Creative Commons’ question for the future: How best to Creative Commons’ license aspects of an emerging #RealisticVirtualEarth and a #RealisticVirtualHarbin as ethnographic & STEM field site (think Google Street View with Time Slider and at the GCellView and GMoleculeView levels, with TensorFlowAI), #TextInTheSidebar which everyone can add to via ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy & in many other ways (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy )? (And see the INCREDIBLE #ToolifyAIWUaS article by Peter Norvig - https://www.toolify.ai/ai-news/revolutionizing-education-with-machine-learning-and-ai-2574306 mentioning a realistic virtual earth, the first time I know of other than World Univ & Sch mentioning it).

Free-to-students' World University and School WUaS, building on CC-4 licensed MIT OCW in 7 languages, and like CC-licensed Wikimedia / Wikipedia in ~348 languages, has been in Wikidata since around 2013, Wikipedia's backend structured knowledge database presumably in ~348 languages too - and for AI and ML databases too. WUaS is also in a #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program. WUaS also has created the beginings of Creative_Commons_Law wiki subject or school - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_Law (accessible from https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) for open wiki-teaching and wiki-learning.

Is World university and school creative commons licensed

How best could free CC-focused World University and School WUaS help build out Creative Commons' licensed libraries of data and resources further, and in all 200 countries (and WUaS is planning to develop further ~200 world class universities in each of all 200 countries from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - and planning online free-to-students' WUaS Law Schools in these countries and in their official languages too - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School#World_University_and_School_Links) and in all 7159 known living languages? And how best could free CC-focused World University and School WUaS build out the Commons for a #RealisticVirtualEarth - think Google Street View with G Time Slider, GMaps, GEarth, Gemini and TensorFlow AI and at the GCellView, GMoleculeView, GAtomView and GQuibtView levels too? World University and School is also growing this #RealisticVirtualEarth for STEM and STEAM field sites, especially for a #RealisticVirtualHarbin Hot Springs, and for further ethnographic and social science and scientific research, in a conversation between the physical and the digital.

Here are the beginnings of a #RealisticVirtualHarbin in #GStreetView with time slider (and I've added a couple of pictures to this, but without paying attention to Commons' licensing) -

In my next book, "Society, Information Technology and the Global University," I'll focus on some Creative Commons' questions, and potentially in WUaS helping to build out the Commons' further. (Am also seeking some readers and conversants regarding my upcoming book as I proceed writing the 9th chapter; please let me know if any of you might be interested in this).

Although CC-licensed World Univ & Sch plans to build out early in Spanish and English, and to offer free online WUaS degrees from home (and WUaS isn't yet accredited). I can't make the AoIR CDMX - https://aoir.org/aoir2026/ - in Mexico from 10/14/26 due to financial constraints in part.

Thanks so much. Will there be an email subgroup regarding the 'AoIR Preconference: In Defense of the Commons'? Might videos of any presentations be available after the CDMX conference?

All the best,

CFP / Announcement: Pre Conference workshop: October 14, 2026

AoIR Preconference: In Defense of the Commons

Workshop facilitators: Zach McDowell, Fenwick McKelvey, Matt Vetter

As the Internet becomes just a data dump for the next AI model, there is a growing demand to articulate the loss and what's at stake over the Internet's future. We argue the commons is a critical, normative concept that needs to be reasserted.

Our workshop aims to build capacity in the development of new theory and practice through the The Critical Commons Research Network (CCRN), an international research collective focused on examining the sharing of digital public knowledge through infrastructural, political-economic, policy lenses, and other critical approaches. This network connects researchers, creating opportunities for mentorship and collaboration around the (digital) commons.

The workshop aims to:

  1. Coordinate research on Internet commons and other shared services online, including Wikipedia, the Creative Commons, open AI models, and emerging hardware or peer-to-peer server collectives;

  2. Advance new theories of the commons as a normative concept for internet studies;

  3. Advocate for alternative forms of resistance against new enclosures of the commons through the Critical Commons Network.

A key function of the preconference is to coordinate researchers addressing the loss and threats to current Internet commons.

We aim to gather 20 to 30 researchers working along themes around the commons for a focused workshop articulating a plan for the network and to coordinate global research on commons theory and practice. We invite participants to submit a brief biography, description of their research project, and relevant publications.

The half-day workshop will be organized around three 60-minute thematic discussions developed from participant responses. Selected participants will be invited to give brief lightning talks to animate discussion. We anticipate themes to include:

  • Wikipedia: Fondly known as “the last best place on the Internet,” Wikipedia was founded on the utopian promise of a decentralized, collaborative, and nonproprietary model for creating and sharing “the sum of all human knowledge." Wikipedia remains a shining example of the digital “commons” — repositories of knowledge and information that have become infrastructural layers that support the Internet as we know it.

  • The future of free, libre, and open source collaboration: Beyond Wikipedia and its sister Wikimedia projects, the digital commons also includes open-source software projects (Debian, Pubpub), shadow libraries that circulate publicly funded research, and interoperable interfaces (such as RSS feeds and APIs). These institutional mechanisms for content, whether knowledge, data, multimedia, or code, eschew exclusive traditional property rights in favor of social governance, harnessing diverse, non-market motivations to create shared public goods.

  • AI Commons: AI drives new forms of extraction and enclosure of the commons through large language models (LLMs) that repurpose volunteer labor and open data in ways that may undermine the sustainability of the projects themselves. Open models, distributed model interfaces, and agentic-human collaborations function as both an alternative and a threat to growing empires of AI. Can open AI actually mitigate these negative externalities for the commons?

  • Theory and application of “traditional” commons systems (forestry, fisheries, etc) applying towards digital systems.

The discussions will be recorded and collected as a report and included in a forthcoming special issue in communication +1. Whenever possible we will attribute contributions to participants, but participants should expect their contributions to inform these outputs.

We encourage critical engagement with commons and commons theory. The ideal of the commons as an open, equitable, and self-regulating space exists under constant pressure, for many reasons. Internally, these projects are not the "mythical egalitarian space" they are often described as. They are characterized by power asymmetries, systemic biases, and complex bureaucracies that can exclude newcomers and marginalized communities who may wish to negotiate and challenge established norms.

Half-day for short workshopping to ensure there is time for networking activities.

Please submit by September 15th (earlier the better):

  1. Your name and affiliation;

  2. A 250 biography and/or description of your research program;

  3. A 250-word interest statement on your idea that you’d like to develop and discuss

Participants will be selected through a peer-review, and announced soon thereafter.

Please send CFP emails to: criticalcommonsresearchnetwork@gmail.com

(for any clarifications you can reply to me)
live long and prosper,

Zach

Stanford Medicine - ENT Experts Up Close- Latest Advances in Rhinology and Sinus Surgery, Tue August 11, 2026

Dear Dr, Patel,

Thanks so much for your excellent "ENT Experts Up Close: Latest Advances in Rhinoplasty and Sinus Surgery" presentation here - https://stanford.cloud-cme.com/course/courseoverview?P=5&EID=56919

Here is the

Question I asked in the Q&A -

Thanks, Dr Patel, for your excellent ENT talk on sinusitis. Will aging reversal genetic drug therapies in the future, FDA approved, likely reverse sinusitis? Thanks, Scott GK MacLeod (worlduniversityandschool.org/ - World University and School with ~200 planned digital WUaS Medical Schools in all 200 countries in their main languages, - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - and brainstorming, with Toyota Humanoid Robot MD Professors of Surgery in the back of Toyota Teaching Hospital buses  … and in a realistic virtual earth for surgery, and think #GoogleStreetView with G Time Slider with little Pegman becoming our #AvatarAgentEHR #Hashtags on TwitterX and sometimes on #LinkedIN, - and at the #GCellView, & #GMoleculeView levels and TensorFlow and Gemini AI).

B

Asked Gemini / AI Mode a related question to the one I asked in registration -

What might be an emerging OSK drug, or a variety of them, that could actually age reverse what I'm calling my eustation tube dysfunction in my right ear or water wound that started in a Yale swimming program, I posit, in the late 1960s and causes discomfort. I'd like to reverse it with age reversing OSK gene drug therapies if some might emerge even in 10 or 20 years. What are some possible possibilities here?

While OSK (Oct4, Sox2, Klf4) and epigenetic reprogramming are gaining significant traction for central nervous system tissues like the optic nerve, applying these therapies to address long-standing Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) or chronic middle/inner ear liquid retention introduces unique structural and biological hurdles.

The Eustachian tube itself is primarily composed of respiratory-type mucosal epithelium, smooth muscle, cartilage, and underlying connective tissue rather than neural cells. Reversing decades-old physical or inflammatory changes in these tissues via OSK gene therapies will likely take time to emerge.

Several potential avenues, mechanisms, and delivery models could develop over the next 10 to 20 years for ear conditions:

Local OSK/mRNA Transfection via Intratympanic Micro-Injections Instead of system-wide gene therapy, future therapies might deliver transient OSK mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles directly into the middle ear space via a minor transtympanic procedure (similar to routine ear tube placement). This localized exposure could reprogram the aged or chronically inflamed mucosal lining of the Eustachian tube without systemic side effects, resetting tissue inflammation, restoring lost cilia function, and improving natural fluid drainage.

Epigenetic Rejuvenation of Mucociliary Clearance Eustachian tube health depends heavily on tiny hair-like structures (cilia) sweeping fluid out into the nasopharynx. Over time or following swimming-related chronic inflammation, damaged or Senescent (aging) epithelial cells lose this sweeping action. Delivering partial reprogramming factors (such as modified OSK protocols or small-molecule OSK mimetic drugs) specifically targeting mucociliary precursor cells could regenerate healthy, fully functional ciliated epithelium.

Targeting Auditory Neuro-Somatic Pathways If chronic fluid retention or past mechanical trauma has led to secondary tissue stiffness, micro-scarring, or localized nerve hypersensitivity around the tensor veli palatini muscle (which mechanically opens the tube), vector-based gene therapies using specialized viral capsids (AAVs) could target the surrounding neuromuscular junction. Epigenetic rejuvenation of these specific neuromuscular tissues could restore the dynamic opening and closing mechanics of the tube during swallowing or yawning.

AAV-Mediated Regeneration of Surrounding Connective Tissue Chronic low-grade fluid accumulation can cause deep structural remodeling in the cartilage matrix supporting the Eustachian tube. Long-term developmental pipelines exploring OSK therapies packaged in specialized biomaterial hydrogels could be placed directly adjacent to the cartilage. Over weeks, controlled expression of OSK factors could reverse cartilage degradation and restore the structural elasticity required for proper pressure equalization.

Also asked AI Mode -

sinusitis - Will aging reversal genetic drug therapies in the future, FDA approved, likely reverse sinusitis?

Aging reversal genetic drug therapies will likely not cure chronic sinusitis by themselves. Sinusitis involves physical blockages, structural issues, and chronic inflammation from infections or allergies that gene therapies cannot fix alone.
Why Aging Reversal May Not Work
  • Blocked Passages: Bone shape and swollen tissue block your sinus openings.
  • Bad Bacteria: Germs and fungus live in the mucus and cause infections.
  • Allergy Triggers: Your immune system reacts strongly to pollen and dust.
How Future Tech Might Help
  • Better Healing: Gene drugs could help repair damaged tissue inside the nose.
  • Smart Immunity: Therapies might calm down the overactive immune response.
  • Tissue Repair: New cells could grow healthy lining in your sinuses.

AND

Can a very low fat diet of primarily fruits, grains, vegetables and legumes reverse sinusitis - and which types of sinusitis potentially?

A very low-fat, plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes cannot "reverse" or cure sinusitis on its own. While whole plant foods provide antioxidants that lower systemic inflammation, sinusitis involves anatomical blockages, infections, or immune-mediated tissue changes that require targeted medical or surgical treatment. [1]
Impact on Types of Sinusitis
  • Acutelung/Infectious Sinusitis: Caused by sudden viral or bacterial infections; diet cannot replace antibiotics or decongestants.
  • Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS): Involves long-term mucosal inflammation; a healthy diet may modestly reduce overall inflammatory markers, but it does not fix underlying structural issues like deviated septa. [1]
  • Allergic Sinusitis: Triggered by environmental allergens; anti-inflammatory plant foods can support general immune function, but specific food or environmental triggers must be managed directly.
  • Nasal Polyps/Aspirin-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease: Some individuals react to high-salicylate foods (which can include certain legumes and fruits), meaning a generic high-legume diet could potentially aggravate symptoms for specific sub-types rather than cure them. [1]

Thanks so much,

Best regards,
Scott
