Hudsonian Godwit pair: Where Harbin visitors & residents soar, beyond the familiar flow-patterns, are in the freedoms and serendipities of this place

Harbin ethnography:

... These flow-patterns have emerged since 1972, and are pretty familiar to frequent-floaters, as well as Harbin residents.

Where Harbin visitors and residents soar, beyond the familiar flow-patterns, are in the freedoms and serendipities of place. The Harbin valley generates much Harbin serendipity, here, meaning “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way, {originally coined, in 1754, “by Horace Walpole, suggested by The Three Princes of Serendip, the title of a fairy tale in which the heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of}” (Apple Dictionary 2007, v. 2.0.3), and referring, in this ethnographic interpretation to happy, beneficial, hippy, chance events, whether unexpected loving intimacy, or remarkable 'flow' experiences at dances, or at musical happenings. Synchronicity, in terms of Harbin as place, refers to “the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection” (Apple Dictionary 2007, v. 2.0.3), - for example, to the little things that happen when sleeping on a tent platform, or visual-instantiations or beauty in the pools, or around music, or seeing a wondrous, old friend, here, in my experience. It's partly the effects of the waters, the nudity, the intimacy in the air, and the hippie ethos, with related radical envisioning, - and when it all comes together (synchronistically), a kind of peaking can occur that's difficult to explicate, unique-to-the-individual, and has to do with Harbin as counterculture. As a last example of place-based serendipity, envisioning and freedom, “The idea of Harbin as a University was explored in the 1960s, before Ish bought the property, and I've seen it mentioned again in 1996 in a publication which I think Ish likes, and hand a hand in writing, called "Living the Future," which gives an idea of how they were envisioning Harbin then. I need to find out how Ish thinks about the term 'heart consciousness church' and how that emerged around 1977. Whatever happens in the pool area, including a kind of wonderfully and deeply released envisioning that then gives rise to well being and serendipity, as well as in some ways the extraordinary gestalt or milieu of Harbin, where intimacy and sexuality are valorized, seems key to the Harbin experience” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, April 5, 2008). And, further, here's an ethnographically reflexive example, focusing on narrative and serendipity: “How do unfolding narratives and serendipity work in the particular at Harbin? If this is my work here writing this, as part of ethnographic field notes, it’s great to do it in the pool area at Harbin, where I am at present. Can I tie each word to the cultivation of loving bliss, neurophysiologically? Using words as feedback mechanisms in the ‘flow’ experience of writing, can I bring forth new ways of experiencing loving bliss while doing this, as well as share this with others” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, February 13, 2008). Here place informs ethnographic narratives and gives rise to enjoyable serendipity and synchronicity. (More on this later). As a last example, ”In places where desire is {more} in the air {than other places}, relative to clothed culture, for example, serendipity and certain kinds of empathy, understandings, and shared experience may exist. I’ve found that to be the case at Harbin a fair amount” (MacLeod, Harbin Field Notes 2007-2008, April 20, 2008). As a whole, and as a sociocultural process, and in terms of temporality, as well, it's place – the pool area and the beautiful, Harbin valley, which informs both qualities of serendipity and synchrony. The inclusive, open, envisioning, hippy Harbin, as exemplified by the pools and unique art are what brings people home. That Harbin, as place, gives form to kinds of serendipity and synchronicity which I associate with soaring and freedom is significantly influenced by the clothing-optional warm pool and the pool areas effects on people's bodyminds. (Modernity is fortunate to have Harbin, and that Harbin has hippy-navigated the possibly many stormy countercultural seas it's faced, since 1972).

HARBIN BUILDINGS AND ART

Harbin's buildings and art are further architectural, aesthetic and, significantly, symbolic expressions of place. …

Hudsonian Godwit: The Harbin property and Mainside, as topography, have fairly familiar people flow-patterns, as a kind of platform

Harbin ethnography:

... The new Diamond J ranch which is quite close to Harbin Hot Springs, probably has more traffic from Harbin Hot Springs, than Sierra Hot Springs has with Harbin, but what the Diamond J ranch is going to be used for is still taking shape.

The Harbin property and especially the most-frequented Mainside area, as topography, have fairly familiar people flow-patterns, as a kind of platform, even. The Harbin valley is a fairly open place, and there are very few 'banned,' or off-limits' parts of Harbin, except, for example, when there's a retreat in the Conference Center (or Meadow building), when the perimeter of these places defines what is off-limits to non-workshop participants. While what's open, and what's not accessible, may have changed over time since 1972, people who come through the Harbin Gate often find where they're going to sleep that night, whether in a room or camping out, put away their food in Fern community kitchen, and then head for the pools. After the pools, they may simply hang out in the pool area, or back where they're spending the night, or wander down to Mainside to the Blue Room cafe, or the Harbin Market, and then go to a yoga class, or a 2 hour workshop. At dinner time, they may head to the Harbin Restaurant, or to Fern community kitchen. In the evening, they may head to a dance, an AA (any A) meeting, or see a film or two in the Harbin movie theater. During much of this, guests and residents may be heading, naked, into and out of the pools. Residents' flow-patterns are more focused on the what makes Harbin function as a retreat center, but residents, too, head into the pools, to the dances, or to the movies, a lot. Harbin residents also help give form to the Harbin's culture, as place, in terms of, for example, participating in the cuddling in the pools, exploring contact improvisation at the dances, or simply hanging out. These flow-patterns have emerged since 1972, and are pretty familiar to frequent-floaters, as well as Harbin residents.

Where Harbin visitors and residents soar, beyond the familiar flow-patterns, are in the freedoms and serendipities of place. ...

Ice on cedar: Harbin field notes & poem - I came upon a feast of lights spread out across the hill and valley

I came upon a feast of lights spread out across the hill and valley

I came upon a feast of lights
speckle-spread out across
the hill and valley,
and reveled
in their evening softnesses.
And from Harbin's redwood,
sleeping deck, below, I saw
the Gazebo's octagonal lights,
of Mainside,
a tasty pie of illumination,
ready to spin off as a
psychedelic-whirligig
through the universe
but, instead, is a center
of this light beauty at Harbin,
in the winter, at night,
from here.

I walked in on the dark,
empty, village path at night.
No one was around ...
It would have been easy
to stumble on some jutting rock,
but I didn't,
and so came to this
stopping place
of glimmering, night-light beauty,
from this redwood deck, -
which, so full in the day
with resting, naked bodyminds,
in solace-ease
from modernities' stresses,
and welcomed these visions.
Now heading into the pool area,
I bring this light show with,
and in, my bodymind,
to bring me deeper
into the mysteries of
aliveness, -
naked, warm and free -
in the warm pool.
Where is she, my love,
with whom this all to share,
and rock out with in,
Oh, this beautiful orchard
of ripe fruit human living ...
Pools now,
in warm oneness ease ...
moving on in now ....

What delight this night
in the warm pool.
Why this particular
bodymind joy
this eve?
Nothing special ... Don't know ...
Because I talked and connected
with a smart, receptive friend,
in words, about loving bliss,
on the phone coming up?
MDMA - methylene dioxy meth amphetamine,
theoretically as biochemical bodymind experience for 75%,
Scottish Country dancing for
series of tones/music, movement, interactive sociability
Ginseng tea?
The weather of my bodymind
hasn't found its cello bow strokes
of loving bliss musics, as I write -
and the concert hall
of this Harbin warm pool
and my bodymind
are conducive, but don't cause,
these joys. ...
I like this weather, though, tonight.

Movies in the theater tonight?
'Tamara Drewe,' a film from Dorset England,
and 'No End in Sight' (2007), about the
American War in Iraq,
and U.S. governmental wrongdoing, yet
again, and so soon after the
American War in Vietnam,
and the other wars in between.
When will we ever learn? ....
that war is not the answer (FCNL).
The cast of characters at the top
are again the perpetrators of
this wrong, with tons of money,
through organizational
inability, and ineptitude, it seems.
And the film 'Tamara Drewe'
also depicted an old theme of
British village life, and love,
with English characters in 2009.
Moral stories, both,
and all for learning about others
from this Harbin theater,
in northern California in 2011.
Given these depictions
where's the 'love,' in sociocultural life,
let alone bliss?
Why is love so faint, so often, -
Pan trodlodytism (common chimpanzee-ness of humans)? -
and how to move, culturally,
to fulsome love, as widespread discourse?
Love is one of the best things in life -
And while Modernities' economic conveniences
are benefiting some in the world,
let's see if they can benefit all,
and with love, as well.

From the round table in the corner of Harbin's restaurant, you can see the green-copper-with-gloden-star-orb spire of the Harbin Temple against the beautiful forested side of the valley, and across the valley through the other window, you can seem the Harbin Domes bubbling up in the distance.

Northern California Quail: Harbin's Properties as Expressions of its Vision

Harbin ethnography:

... So, Harbin as place with pools, and vision, welcomes people through its gate, and some stay, become part of the community, and a few develop their own businesses on Harbin property.

So, while Heart Consciousness Church's properties, as places, have differential economic value, they are also all expressions of Harbin's vision, emerging since 1972, and thus their economic significance, or potential, doesn't play an important role in defining their future. The Harbin property and the new Diamond J Ranch are owned and operated by HCC, while Sierra Hot Springs is only operated by HCC, not owned, in a somewhat passive manner. For example, these places aren't being developed for condominiums and maximum profit, perhaps due to a Harbin-informed conservation-oriented ethos, shaped significantly by the 1960s. And the various vendors, and single-proprietor businesses on Harbin property, also have their place-situatedness, and economic value, under the HCC organizational umbrella. One hippy vendor has told me he has to continually negotiate with the M.D.s ('managing directors') about the terms of his place on the grassy area across from the Gazebo, a little ways up from the Labyrinth. And there's relatively little travel between residents at Harbin and residents at Sierra Hot Springs, for example. These two communities of HCC residents are kinds of tribes, located in place. The new Diamond J ranch which is quite close to Harbin Hot Springs, probably has more traffic from Harbin Hot Springs, than Sierra Hot Springs has with Harbin, but what the Diamond J ranch is going to be used for is still taking shape.

The Harbin property and especially the most-frequented Mainside area, as topography, have fairly familiar people flow-patterns, as a kind of platform, even. ...

Firefly: I came upon a feast of lights spread speckle 'cross hill and vale

I came upon a feast of lights spread speckle 'cross hill and vale

I came upon a feast of lights
spread speckle 'cross hill and vale,
and reveled
in their evening softnesses.
And from Harbin's redwood,
sleeping deck, below,
I saw Gazebo's
octagonal lights,
on Mainside, -
a tasty, illuminated pie, -
ready to spin-off
in a wee-wee :)
psychedelic-whirligig,
through starry cosmos,
but, instead,
centers this
Harbin-light,
beauty gaze,
in winter,
at night,
from here.

I walked in on that dark,
empty, village path, at night.
No one was around ...
It would have been easy
to stumble upon
some jutting rock,
but I didn't,
and so came to this
way-place
of glimmering,
night-light beauty, -
this redwood deck,
which, so full in the day
with resting,
naked bodyminds,
in solace-ease
from stresses of modernities,
gives forth these
welcoming visions
of la lumière.

Heading now
into the pool area,
I bring this light
show with, and in,
my bodymind,
to venture deeper
into mysteries
of aliveness, -
naked, warm and free -
in Harbin's watery warmth.

Where are you now,
my love,
with whom this all to share,
and rock out in with,
all together?

And, oh, what beautiful orchards
of ripe, fruit, human living! ...

Pools now,
in warm-oneness-ease ...

Heading on in now ....

What delight this night,
in this very warm pool!
Why this particular,
bodymind joy,
this eve?
Nothing special ... don't know ...
Was it because I talked,
and connected,
with a smart, receptive friend,
in words, about loving bliss,
on the phone coming up?
We thought outloud about
this bliss-love:
Ecstasy is MDMA,
methylene dioxy meth amphetamine, -
theoretically,
a love-everything-in-the-world-intensely,
for 5-8 hours,
biochemical, bodymind,
reference experience
for 75% of we ingesters, -
for affective euphoria, -
and one,
of so, so many,
replicatable qualities of bliss,
for we who are biological beings, -
symbolizing, human primates,
shaped by evolution
by natural selection.

And we talked further about
Scottish Country Dancing,
which we've done together,
quite long ago,
with bliss,
via its ebullient
series of tones,
its music, movement,
and sociable interactiveness.
It's a related, also replicable -
like technology, - example.

Was it, too, the Ginseng tea,
earlier today, of which
I hadn't drunk in a while?

Still, the weather of my bodymind
hasn't yet found its
cello bow strokes
of loving bliss agency,
of this music-making,
here and now,
when desired.

And as I write,
and while in concert hall,
of this Harbin warm pool, -
my bodymind, yes,
is conducive to such bliss,
yet, I haven't caused
these joys.

What can cause bodymind,
loving bliss, whenever, but,
especially, here now?

I do, though,
like this weather,
here tonight,
in winter,
at Harbin.

Umbilicaria: A handful of businesses on the Harbin property, The Harbin-family is what makes the place able to have businesses

Harbin ethnography:

... In many ways, mingling naked in the warm pool, and pool area, is an important metaphor for ownership at Harbin, where the 'shared vision' of Harbin as place is a kind of ownership.

While there are a handful of businesses on the Harbin property, in many ways, being part of this place, this Harbin-family is what makes the place able to have businesses. Here place, belonging, and vision, here in the sense of countercultural vision, inform business practices. These businesses include Heart Consciousness Church's hotel business, the Harbin Restaurant, the Harbin Market, the Blue Room Cafe, the School of Shiatsu and Massage, a Kombucha (vinegary drink) manufacturing business, three vending booths in the warmer months, which mostly sell silks, tie die and related, beautiful New Age goods. All of these businesses are 'places' at Harbin. There's also a Harbin hulu hoop business, which isn't place based. And there are Harbin workshops, some facilitated by Harbin residents, some by frequent floaters, and some by people less connected with Harbin. Looking at various bulletin boards at Harbin – a) in Fern community kitchen near the pools, b) outside the restaurant, c) near the Stammtisch in the Blue Room – have postings for both Harbin and outside-Harbin businesses. I think that the School of Shiatsu and Massage, the summer-time vendors of silks and tie die, and the year-round producer of Kombucha – have a rental relationship to Heart Consciousness Church, whereas the guest rooms, restaurant, Blue Room Cafe, Harbin Market are all part of Heart Consciousness Church's core business. Ishvara once told me in an interview (MacLeod, Scott Gordon K. 2008. Ishvara (Bob Hartley) - Harbin Hot Springs' Founder – Interview. April 8. Harbin Hot Springs, CA: Personal Interview 7:15) that he envisions Harbin as an open market place of ideas, and even of businesses, but when I began listing some of the businesses on property and suggested open-market possibilities, we didn't continue the line of conversation. All of the various bodyworkers at Harbin are on staff, and so are part of the HCC core business. So, Harbin as place with pools, and vision, welcomes people through its gate, and some stay, become part of the community, and a few develop their own businesses on Harbin property.

So, while Heart Consciousness Church's property, as places, has differential economic value, they are also all expressions of Harbin's vision, emerging since 1972, and thus their economic significance or potential doesn't play an important role in defining their future. ...
