I'm seeking to facilitate development of a #RealisticVirtualEarth for everything (a ginormous project - and as STEM field sites, as well as classrooms, and for archaeological digs - adding, for ex. all 46 sublayers of Troy - and as online hospitals for clinical care, including tele-robotic surgery even - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSurgery?src=hash&lang=en - hopefully emerging out of Stanford Medicine). Think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain / TensorFlow / Translate / Sketchup / Hangouts and at the cellular and atomic levels, and with increasingly realistic avatar bots for developing brain research, for example. I'm curious how your recent email today - "Roble at 100 | Survey and How to Submit Memories & Photos" - might dovetail with this. If, for example, after your student, Jim, were to hypothetically add all his photos about concrete to such a Google-informed realistic virtual earth from all the decades the photos were taken, whether we could even print architectural plans from any given year, for example, among a myriad of other amazing potentialities (e.g. create light shows for film sets, or map in this realistic virtual universe the space travel to Mars in the 2030s) that might emerge from this.
As a new kind of knowledge generation, I'm developing a social science method I'm calling STEM ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - which would allow any of us to wiki add resources to such a realistic virtual earth and in the process share our interpretation (as one suggestion of what we do in ethnography and anthropology).
As a little background, this emerges from my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project which seeks to create a realistic virtual Harbin for actual-virtual comparison, and for ongoing research, from the 1960s forward. There's much overlap potential with Roble and Stanford here since the freedom seeking movements of the 1960s were very alive, colorful intelligent and creative at Stanford, I'd posit - and Stanford-ites probably visited Harbin a fair amount as well. In developing CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, I hope too that since MIT doesn't have a law school or a medical school, that WUaS will emerge out of Stanford Law and Medicine for OCW in each of all ~200 countries' official languages, and that a realistic virtual earth will facilitate STEM field sites, classrooms, and even nation states for planning and commerce for example. And this would be an aspect of Stanford history as well. (World Univ & Sch is like Wikipedia in 300 languages with MIT OCW in 5 languages, and seeks to be in all ~200 nation states' official languages, and indeed in all 7097 living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning). I'm in communication with both Stanford Medicine Chair Bob Harrington and Stanford Law's Roland Vogl about some of this.
How would Roble at 100 emerge fulsomely in such a realistic virtual earth - with interactive avatar bots for conversing - and with machine learning? And could Stanford student oral history interviews which you mentioned, Jim, yesterday, inform such a realistic virtual earth for Roble history in remarkable ways - with all the Stanford alumni present yesterday? I'm looking forward to when 10 person Google group video Hangouts begin to take form in a realistic virtual earth - as an alternative world, and even as a kind of time travel. Stanford students may revel in such a realistic virtual Roble or Stanford (and in the '60s and '70s too) and also find much creative and career potential in this.
