[NTF-talk] Attitudes about atheists and logic

I was amused to see the article in today's NYT about a study on attitudes toward atheists - The Serial Killer Test: Biases Against Atheists Emerge in Study.  The survey question was about a hypothetical serial killer and asked "Which is more probable?  1) The man is a teacher; or 2) The man is a teacher and does not believe in any gods."  Apparently 60 percent of respondents answered no. 2, which is of course logically incorrect.  So my conclusion is that around 60 percent of the population has trouble with logical thinking and is biased against atheists.  The other 40 percent is either (1) not biased against atheists or (2) does well at logical thinking, or both.  Somewhat depressing.  I don't know whether the survey authors designed it this way intentionally or are they bad at logical thinking too?

I appreciate a kind of Richard Dawkins' approach to defining atheism proactively from a reasoning perspective - https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins - in these regards, Victor.

In what ways could Nontheist Friends begin to design such atheist and logic surveys - and generate credible research as well as news' articles about this?

This could in part emerge eventually from the "Nontheist Friends' wiki school at World University and School" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) - for open teaching and learning (accessible from the Wikipedia Nontheist_Quakers' article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers - which is also in Spanish) - and its upcoming "Universitian" Newspaper.

Wiki World University & School has a NEW Wiki in Mediawiki - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org - I'm very glad to say.  Soon to be in Wikipedia's 358 languages - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - and the NtF wiki school at WUaS will become easier to use, and in more languages. (Friendly-informed WUaS hasn't hired yet).

Friendly regards,
Scott

For example, re Dawkins:

Of course religious faith is a great evil. But are there circumstances in which patriotic national pride is even worse? Sincere question.

Hi All,

The responses are fascinating, and correct, but I did want to pose a counter argument to our logical analysis. If we do a straightforward translation from English into formal logic then yes, people's response is ludicrous. The question Victor quotes is

>> The survey question was about a hypothetical serial killer and asked "Which is more probable?  1) The man is a teacher; or 2) The man is a teacher and does not believe in any gods."

We are assuming people translate this into logic in the way Bill points out:

>> Which is more probable? 1) A; or 2) A and B". The correct answer under the rules of logic is always (1) which is more probable

But I do not think that is how people translate the English into logic. I think people treat the language as an idiom and translate it into the logic that seems more fruitful, more likely, as otherwise the question seems pedantic and daft. I think they reach for a more Bayesian translation: which is greater P(M|A) or P(M|A&B)? I.e which is more probable, that the person is a serial killer given that we already know they are a teacher, or that the person is a serial killer given that we already know they are a teacher and an atheist.

The same discussion ensues about people's misguided attitude to atheists, but their logic is *not* flawed.

Cheers,

Tim.

Victor, Tim and All,

(Nice to hear from you, Tim).  Might you be suggesting that the NYTs shared a kind of "fuzzy logic", or a news story about a poorly designed study, Victor, and that paying attention to how the public thinks of atheists, including Nontheist Friends / atheist Quakers, and in the context of major news' media, such as "The Times," as influencers of public opinion, might be important?

Just coded these "Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations," somewhat logically, and definitely with Nontheist Friends / atheist Quakers in mind ... curious about the logic in Patanjali's Sutras ... and re these ... Yogic logic (which can probably be extended to new kinds of logic emerging from the information age and computation and related philosophy and mathematical focuses) may have something in common with logics emerging from religious thinking or moral philosophy ...

Definitely coded ... http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html ... decided to riff a bit and just created "Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations" coming into conversation with Angela and Victor's Yoga and as perhaps an alternative to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras too ... which I've been hesitating doing for years ...  Didn't come out too badly ...  What would Hippy-anjali write down and sing as key yoga code for the next 3 millennia, coming into conversation with old fat-and-jolly as Yogini Angela Farmer has called Patanjali (of the Yoga sutras) ... I wonder? :) ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/08/ovule-what-would-hippy-anjali-write.html ...

Who here is familiar with the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - and as a kind of logical system even? Or with Angela Farmer and Victor van Kooten's Yoga? ... and all re Nontheist Friends / atheist Quakers?

While these "Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations" might also parallel a kind of "hippy logic" and "atheists' meditation logic" or "NtFs' meditation logic" " they also seem to have something to do with "Harbin Hot Springs' logic" http://bit.ly/HarbinBook and  https://twitter.com/HarbinBook (my recent book) - and possibly NtF logic too? Foundations of logic seem relevant here, and possibly vis-a-vis Quakers' historic peace testimony - and related questions of non-harming and ahimsa.  (I won't look up logic at this time in the Oxford Companion to Philosophy 2nd ed. for example).

Victor, I share your concerns: " So my conclusion is that around 60 percent of the population has trouble with logical thinking and is biased against atheists.  The other 40 percent is either (1) not biased against atheists or (2) does well at logical thinking, or both.  Somewhat depressing.  I don't know whether the survey authors designed it this way intentionally or are they bad at logical thinking too?"

But per my previous email in this thread, I hope that NtFs might be able to create better designed studies than this one, as well as related publications. And might NtFs also create new kinds of logic itself?

Jaima,
Scott
