Happity, Hippity Birthday, Sunheart, Heartsong!

I just noticed your birthday was on Sun., August 20th so I'm writing with birthday greetings, and birthday party email celebrants!

There are about 10 photos of us - https://photos.app.goo.gl/n8iGrLVrAZb79LPk6 - in the Blue Room cafe at Harbin from 2011 around Valentine's day here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/porcupine-needlegrass-sunheart-scott.html. Would love to be able to 'time slide' back in a realistic virtual Harbin ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ and even, with Peter Norvig's help (Peter Norvig: We Are Seduced by Our Low-Dimensional Metaphors | AI Podcast Clips - https://youtu.be/y0c1yrPDLN8) - make these photos come alive, and interactively - and to wish you a happy birthday then, now, and in the future virtually too!

To your lucid dreaming! :)

Smokey outside here, with windows closed, and fan on, - and the new inside thermometer said 79F as a low for today, when I got up, and is now up to 81. How's the weather by both of you? Awaiting the portable swamp cooler's arrival today, but which apparently involves open windows, so I will see when it first gets used ... !  (Am still concerned about illegal break ins and entries, and theft, in the night - and of spare car key? ... and haven't been able to change the lock yet, with landlady's written permission, and since unwell dad doesn't seem to be able to control himself :( ... ) Am hoping to take the Cal Sailing Club first test today, since the CSC day leader yesterday was helpful with conversation about learning for this test. And the Berkeley Marina is a great place to get away from the smoke. On with my big educational project, upcoming Scottish small pipes' "Honey in the Bag" album (taught 20th great lesson last night with Taylor!), and my next book (poetry again ~ and Harbin inspired!)

Am appreciative of the vision of both Biden and Harris (Joe Biden Acceptance Speech at 2020 Democratic National Convention - https://youtu.be/pnmQr0WfSvo), and think they have a chance re the incumbent ineffectual despot wannabe. What do you think?

Ma, Ann,

How are you both on the Oregon frontier, and on the Pennsylvania frontier too? :)

I am a bit headachey today probably due to the smoke in the air. There continues to be quite a lot of smoke in the air, even more perhaps than yesterday morning (but not yesterday evening), and perhaps ironically, N95 masks are supposed to be useful for smoke, per this KP message this morning - "There are some important differences between masks that protect you from smoke (N95 masks) and those that protect you and others from COVID-19" (& look: KP video visits - https://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/videovisit/ - re emergent telemedicine!). It continues to be hot inside too with the windows closed at 88F at 4 pm, which is also cooler than the last 3 or 4 days in the afternoon, however.

Staying in, drinking lots of cold fluids, keeping the fan running with the windows shut ... (landlord hasn't left yet, so am staying in re protecting against another illegal break in and entry, potentially with theft too, at least by lessening the chances that this occurs) ... would head out to study further for the Cal-Sailing tests in the Berkeley Marina (and to lessen the smoke and the heat) - and regarding all those frontiers too ... Maybe with what I learn at Cal Sailing, I might become commodore of the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club, when kids come along even :) Heading out now ... :)

Fondly, Scott

Hi Ma, Ann,

For your interest: some further 'California frontier' history I've been sharing with Ed, too:

The Oakland hills fire was in October of 1991 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_firestorm_of_1991 - and who knows what were its compounding causes etc? (What might Kaiser Permanente medicine know in these regards too - in electronic medical records esp. - and differentially from the media, and other accounts, I wonder?)

And the Loma Prieta earthquake was in October 1989, affecting Oakland, and 'downing' the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Loma_Prieta_earthquake

I think I had just matriculated at the Iyengar Yoga Institute on Taraval in SF in the autumn of 1991, moving out from the Pendle Hill Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation near Philadelphia, and Swarthmore College, then. So I wasn't around for that big earthquake.

Scott

Further follow up:
seems like too that if I brought my old ceramic or plastic plant pots or containers to https://berkeleyhort.com that I'd be able to store my upcoming portable evaporative cooler aka a swamp cooler - for the extreme heat here - in that corner outside under a roof, with a cover - quite nicely. Thanks for letting me know about the Berkeley Horticultural Nursery near you!

Warm regards, Scott

Per the book which Ed gave me over the weekend: John McPhee's "The Crofter and the Laird" (1969) (and I gave Ed too The Klamath Knot (1983, but which begins in 1969) by David Foster Wallace), and in which there is a lobster getting description -

This is the lobster I associate with the British Isles (searching on UK spiny lobster), with no claws to speak of for lobster meat, whereas in the Crofter and the Laird, the lobsters McPhee sees are like Maine lobsters (journalistic licence? ... the ability to raise Maine lobster-species in Scotland for commerce, and so possibly imported for aquaculture???) -

https://www.nature.scot/plants-animals-and-fungi/invertebrates/marine-invertebrates/european-spiny-lobster

May have to look into this natural history story of possibly 2 species! :)

Hi Jane and Ann,

VERY NICE TO GET A call from Ed yesterday evening on a brief walk in a slightly smokey world, on the hill up to what I'll call the rusty hot tub. Feels like a first friendly call I've gotten in years even in curious California (having seen Ed 2 times over the weekend at his place). Thanks too for your 'All's Well' email, Ann, from last Friday but which I only read (and replied to) yesterday. Curious unfriendly? Canyon too (with the 'unwell' landlord). Nice to talk with him as an old friend, and maybe things are changing here at 670 Ridgecrest Road Canyon CA, 94516 (legally ? - and even re landlord moving on to a retirement center, I'd like to think). It would be great to come into this property, and it could possibly be good to raise a family here even.

Fondly, Scott

Ma,

It was 73-74F here at Cal Sailing - Berkeley Marina - and with internet access to learn with for some of the tests sort of ... which initial internet HANDSHAKE of signing on took about 10 minutes (of not connected, then connected) ... but then it started working fine. Was able to surf at Cal Sailing, and make progress in preparing for these tests.

And very nice to talk - am listening to Barack Obama now, and he's sensible, experienced, and inspiring - https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/19/watch-live-barack-obama-kamala-harris-hillary-clinton-to-speak-at-dnc.html!

Air was clean there in Berkeley but in heading back, it was 100F in my place, fan on, and with air seeming slightly clear, I opened all the windows and the thermometer now reads 92F. Getting better, but I may close windows later, since my eyes are stinging ever so slightly.

What are you enjoying / did you enjoy about the Democratic National Convention? :)

I hope you have a great week and weekend ahead!

Love,
Scott

On to Call Sailing to study for test since they have internet for members - cooler too

73F PREDICTION at Berkeley Marina :)

Maybe can open windows tonight if smoke has cleared

Thanks, Ma,

I may try to head to Cal Sailing in the Berkeley Marina this afternoon again. I have to take a paper test first, and then around 3-4 small on-site tests including rigging, sailing, and similar. But it's hot here, so it's a bit hard to study for this paper test, although the fan helps. (Am not a fan of tests either, although this one should be pretty easy).

Glad your heat has abated! And thanks for your email! :)

Sounds like you’re being very sensible.  Sorry about the heat and smoke.  When do you go next to the place where the lasers are?

Heat has abated for the moment, but more due this weekend.

Hi Ma,

Got out the fan for about the 3rd time in 13 years I'd think ... with windows closed (due to smoke outside) ... and it helps. House thermometer up to 92F (with fan on it)! Am drinking lots of fluids, waiting for unwell landlord to leave for the day (lessening the possibility of another break in and entry / theft) ... which could be done effectively possibly either legally, or if he decided to leave on his own (per even his daughter's encouragement / conversation) ...  all on the California frontier here in Canyon.

Would be cooler on Cuttyhunk! (But if some sort of legal movement could be afoot re landlord, it's probably better to be here)!

How's your day going?

Love, Scott

Ma,

Cold fluids, and using my current reliable efficient little car for day traveling and AC to get out of smoke and heat, have merit!

Ma,

The Berkeley Marina, and the Cal Sailing Club - https://www.cal-sailing.org/ - are a gateway to another amazing California frontier - the Pacific ocean - which I haven't explored whatsoever (and the SF Bay Delta too!) ... a kinda cool opportunity

Further California frontiers:
The hypothetical van, which I'm interested in getting, which could sleep 4, has AC and is amazingly fuel efficient (to leave AC on all night when needed, which isn't usual in CA), would allow me to Scottish small pipe in it, get away from the smoke, and heat, and also get to Harbin when it opens (both physically - and virtually, while traveling!). I'd like to be able to stand up in it too! (I don't think the current Sprinter Mercedes vans - which probably top the list of vans - would be that fuel efficient). Am waiting for the hypothetical Toyota Proace to become available in the US, for design and fuel-efficiency reasons + (I'm hypothesizing it will become available) ... but when? Maybe never!

Inside temperature presently in the house-let is 83F with the new thermometer. I think in the future, I'm going to try to leave my place when it gets over 80 or 85F ... and before I get the evaporative cooler. New thermometer has also max and minimum readings for 24 hour periods - and I hate to think how hot it might have been yesterday here - 110? It seems like it can be 10 degrees hotter than outside temperature inside, but now I can learn more about this!

Are you thinking about getting out on a kayak or in a canoe on the Allegheny river at all - with a friend too? For movement, and for coolness, and exploration ... a different kind of walk!

Love, Scott

Ma,

You might enjoy this little poem-let:

Heat came to this land
In summer California
And dry inland driftwood
Looked like bleached cattle skulls
Lining the wAy to scorch.
Time to head to Harbin
At least #VirtualHarbin
For online soaking

In #RealisticVirtualHarbin
From home
In fragrant waters
So cool

Hi Ma,

How are you?

There's smoke in the air this morning, from wildfires I think - due to recent hot weather? - with echoes of a recent previous year of what seemed like 10 days of intense smoke in air from wildfires (unhealthy to breathe!) ... Can see the smoke in air now that it's light, and I hope it doesn't last that many days (until the wood fuel burns down???), - and perhaps I can get away from this smoke by heading to the Berkeley Marina for example. I closed my windows at 4:30 am which is Already getting warm inside now. Evaporative cooler comes on Friday too - ( and which seems to involve open windows). The coolness generation will be welcome.

...

Time for my morning meditation :)

Appreciating so much that you're my mother, Ma, from my western frontier settler in California's Canyon 94516 perspective, in a well-deaigned house-let in a beautiful spot. Virtual telemedicine to come, to complement Kaiser Petmanente's health efforts??? (re for ex. ??? Travis the RN living in - as night nurse even? - for many months now).

Sending love,
Scott

Hi Nelson, Dean, All,

I hope you're well. Am exploring the idea of making a TSWG presentation this autumn 2020 about creating a realistic virtual earth for tourism and tourism studies, with actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualHarbin?src=hashtag_click - as a case study, and in the context of WUaS facilitating developing one realistic virtual earth for everything and with a film-to-3D App (for mass tourism?) into Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlow with Samsung Neons aka artificial humans (and for 'tourism robotics' too) and via ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, and why this isn't yet begun. #RealisticVirtualEarth #hashtag ... https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth?src=hashtag_click ... whereas the https://twitter.com/search?q=%23RealisticVirtualUniverse&src=typed_query has more of a traveling component inherent already with space travel for example (than realistic virtual earth for oceans, for ex.)

I recently updated MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch's home page - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - with many realistic virtual earth #hashtags. See, too the Cal Anthro libraries' map of field sites here -
