Dear Yogi Tom, Siddhartha / Pin (best friend from high school in Pennsylvania, and having been born in India, living there for the first year of his life), All,

Greetings! Thanks for your Yoga discourse and the Yoga discussion ... Appreciating your and the Yoga Center of Chico's ethics (re Yoga philosophy too) ..

My wifi signal kept cutting off ... so I left toward the end. Some ideas I typed in the Zoom text chat, in text, and or sent or didn't send in text chat:

Conscience … re right and wrong (and re consciousness which you were talking about just before) .... As a northeast f/Friend Quaker, here's some thinking about conscientious objection (eg such as Quaker - conscientious objection) https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/conscientious%20objection ... Appreciating your ethics and focus on 8 limb yoga (and re http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html)

"Tom … thanks … how to elicit bliss as ananda ‘from the inside’ - here and now?
Thanks … I appreciate what Tom emailed me just before this discussion -

'Scott, this is not a discussion about bliss in general. We are discussing what BKS Iyengar says about it in "light on life". It is a book exploration. Thanks for your interest. Namaste, Tom
Sent from my iPhone'

Inspired by Angela and Victor’s Inspiring Yoga and re these Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html … I’ll ask this question - Tom … thanks … how to elicit bliss as ananda ‘from the inside’ - here and now? - but realized Tom that you’re talking about a specific interpretation of Yoga. Thanks!"

(To Yoga Center of Chico ... is that you  Lauren, or ?):
I won’t be joining in March … Thanks a lot! Namaste, and Yogically, Scott

To Everyone.
Thanks, Tom, nice to Yoga-see you after 30 years too. Here’s a view on practicing bliss too “Guidelines for practicing loving bliss vis-à-vis practicing a musical instrument” -
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm
And re Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html (also inspired by Angela and Victor’s Yoga who come into conversation with Iyengar Yoga by creating a new approach to Yoga ‘from the inside’)… Namaste, Friendly regards, Happy Yoga, Scott

Namaste, nontheist f/Friendly (Quaker) regards, Happy Yoga, Scott

Namaste. I just glanced through the pdfs you sent me, and don't see the words 'ananda' or 'sukha' ... having just searched on bliss and found this AI overview -

What are words for bliss in Yoga, Hinduism and Sanskrit ?

Ananda and also Sukha

AI overview

The Sanskrit word for bliss is ānanda (आनन्द). It is a key word in yoga and Hinduism that can also mean happiness, joy, and delight.

Explanation

Ānanda is a vital attribute of Brahman, the supreme being in Indian philosophy. It symbolizes the state of self-realization and spiritual fulfillment. In the Hindu Vedas, Upanishads, and Bhagavad gita, ānanda represents eternal bliss that comes after the cycle of rebirth ends.

In yogic philosophy, ānanda is one of the three essential aspects of existence, along with sat (truth) and chit (consciousness). Together, these qualities describe the nature of the universal consciousness or true self.

In deeper yoga practices, ānanda is related to samadhi, the yogic state of unitary consciousness. Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the samadhi that transcends all mental activities, is the highest ānanda.

Sukha (सुख) is another Sanskrit word that means happiness, pleasure, ease, joy, or bliss.

Might we be able to talk about Ananda as bliss (and loving bliss as well) and Yoga this evening possibly please?

Thank you, Namaste, Happy Yoga explorations,
Scott

Dear Tom, All,

Greetings from near Harbin Hot Springs (aka Heart Consciousness Church) after some good soaking meditation earlier in the day, as well as sitting meditation on a Harbin pool area deck (and with Yoga Mudrasana, closing or sealing pose in half lotus, not in body-temperature warm water). Am deeply appreciative of how the Harbin warm pool kind of meditates you, i.e. the people who are soaking in it, and also changes one's consciousness, and even in doing so kind of gives one a natural high, and sometimes bliss bubbles up :) (And Harbin is coming together after the Valley Fire of 9/12/15 that razed it ... and could be pretty nice by next year)

Looking forward further to our Yoga conversation about bliss this Thursday ...

Yogically,
Scott

Dear Lauren and Tom,

And thanks again, Tom, decades ago, after I completed the 2 year Yoga certificate course at IYI Sf for helping me get an opportunity to teach Yoga in the Yoga Studio (where Evalaleah Howard was the proprietor) on Divisadero in the mid 1990s around 1993. And thanks too so much for helping me get a beautifully hand-crafted Plow-Pose restorative Yoga asana bench around this time (and did you make this yourself?). I continue to do Yoga asana and meditation daily first thing upon rising and in very salutary ways.

I'm writing to inquire if it would be possible to join this  Yoga Philosophy Discussion Group out of Chico opportunity in Zoom, and letting friends, and contacts know about this as well (some of whom learned directly from Iyengar for decades). A bit in conversation with Angela and Victor's Yoga, as well as Patanjali's Sutras, out of Iyengar Yoga too, I've written this Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html . First textual or stone carving or similar evidence for yoga sutras compilations of Patanjali where? 8 limb yoga ?

The earliest textual evidence for the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which outlines the eight limbs of yoga, comes from a compilation of Sanskrit sutras (aphorisms) in India, likely between 500 BCE and 400 CE.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Textual Evidence: The Yoga Sutras themselves are the primary source, a collection of 195 Sanskrit sutras (aphorisms) on the theory and practice of yoga.
Patanjali's Role: The sage Patanjali is credited with compiling and organizing knowledge about yoga from older traditions, including Samkhya, Buddhism, and older Yoga traditions.
Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga): The eight limbs are:
Yama (moral discipline): Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), Aparigraha (non-attachment)
Niyama (observances): Saucha (purity), Santosha (contentment), Tapas (discipline), Swadhyaya (self-study), Ishvara-Pranidhana (surrender to the divine)
Asana (physical postures):
Pranayama (breath control):
Pratyahara (sense withdrawal):
Dharana (concentration):
Dhyana (meditation):
Samadhi (enlightenment or bliss):
Timeline: The Yoga Sutras were compiled sometime between 500 BCE and 400 CE.
Location: The compilation took place in India.

What did Herbert Benson MD in "The Relaxation Response" book from 1975 show scientifically about meditation ?

What did Herbert Benson MD in "The Relaxation Response" book from 1975 show about meditation, what was he explaining about meditation scientifically; did it show lower oxygen levels in the blood than otherwise and did he come up with the words relaxation response?

Herbert Benson, MD, was a pioneer in mind-body medicine, and his work significantly advanced the scientific understanding of meditation. Here's a breakdown of his key contributions:
 * The Relaxation Response:
   * Dr. Benson is most famous for defining the "relaxation response," which is the physiological opposite of the "fight-or-flight" response.
   * His 1975 book, "The Relaxation Response," popularized this concept and explained how meditation and other similar practices could elicit this response.
   * Essentially, he demonstrated that through specific techniques, individuals could counteract the harmful effects of stress.
 * Scientific Explanation of Meditation:
   * Benson's research provided scientific evidence for the physiological changes that occur during meditation.
   * He showed that meditation could lead to:
     * Decreased heart rate.
     * Lowered blood pressure.
     * Slower respiration.
     * Changes in brain wave patterns.
   * While there are many complex changes that occur during the relaxation response, generally speaking, his work showed that the body goes into a state of lower arousal. This includes a decrease in oxygen consumption.
 * Key Contributions:
   * He bridged the gap between medicine and spirituality, demonstrating the scientific basis for practices like meditation.
   * His work emphasized the importance of self-care and stress management in overall health.
   * And yes, he coined the phrase "relaxation response".
In essence, Dr. Benson's work provided a scientific foundation for understanding the benefits of meditation and other relaxation techniques, making them more accessible to a wider audience.
