Alder: Open Access Education in Quaker College Settings, and Friendly-informed CC WUaS for best STEM-centric CC OpenCourseWare degrees at the Graduate School level

Hi Wess (and Donn, David, Kim and FAHE),

Thanks for your emails, and I've been waiting to reply because World University and School, and I, don't yet have the monies to travel to Woodbrooke Quaker Centre in England in June, but we're hoping to get them. I did bring your Friends Association for Higher Education (FAHE) - http://quakerfahe.com/annual-conference/ - email to WUaS monthly business meeting (2nd Saturdays at 9am in the manner of Friends), and WUaS thanks you for your focusing queries.

If/as monies are forthcoming, I'd be happy to hone my presentation to talk generally about open access, Creative Commons' licensed education, and MOOCs in a global context re startup CC World University and School. And since one main wing of WUaS is that we're wiki (editable web pages), and planned in all languages as wikis, we aggregate other open access projects and MOOCS. While WUaS is CC licensed (as is CC MIT OCW, CC Yale OYC and CC Wikipedia and their new backend interlingual database anticipating/developing in machine learning/AI called CC Wikidata/Wikibase), not all open access educational resources (OER) are CC. WUaS plans to, and continues to, aggregate highest quality OER in many languages, as well as facilitate open teaching (eg to one's web camera) and learning opportunities, and especially among Friends.

While WUaS's other main wing is planned online degrees (Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and MD as well as IB high school), WUaS is planning to accredit with WASC senior in California (potentially incubated by the University of California, which is already accredited by WASC, as is Stanford) for academic standards, and by accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC for planning purposes, significantly as another source of academic standard. Both UC and Stanford are more than 100 years old, but WASC senior is not, in terms the planned life of the WUaS program.

WUaS may also seek to "accredit" with Friends Council on Education in terms of Friendly academic standards, if they "accredit" at the college level, although I seem to remember that they may not do this. Having attended the last two years of FAHE gatherings, and as a member, what are the subsequent membership procedures for WUaS in these regards to be listed as a FAHE member, Donn, David, Kim and Wess?

In seeking to become the Harvard/Haverford of the Internet, WUaS would seek to explore generating an academic - and gathered-Quaker-Meeting-centric - culture/discourse of online matriculated students that shares much with that of the Quaker colleges/cultures' attracting Friendly high achievers/thinkers, such as Guilford, Haverford, Swarthmore and Earlham et al. As I think about it currently, Friendly colleges would potentially be able to "leverage so many aspects of open access education in terms of expanding learning opportunities within our settings" if one were to conceive of Friendly college settings in terms of FAHE itself as a Friendly Quaker higher education setting for learning and related opportunities. In this opening way, Quaker colleges could anticipate, for example, Friendly-informed PH.D., Law, and M.D. online degree opportunities at CC WUaS and teach toward these at the undergraduate level, and students could learn about these degree opportunities in the context of FAHE, thus leveraging the power of open access post-undergraduate degree education re Friendly-informed open access education developments at Quaker colleges.

Perhaps it would also be good to explore changing the format of my planned FAHE presentation from "formal presentation" (or similar) to "Presentation with Q&A" or similar to leverage the benefit of Friendly group conversation about this at Woodbrooke, and in the context of the British Isles especially as well, and to explore also generating other related open access education ideas in this Friendly process.

Thank you again for your emails, Wess.

Best wishes to you and your loved ones as well this holiday season.

With Friendly greetings,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your proposal for FAHE at Woodbrooke. As a member of the board, I am working through some of the proposals and wanted to write to you about your very ambitious proposal.

Given that you had a very similar presentation this past summer Friends on the board are hoping that you might consider honing your presentation into something that could be keyed more into talking generally about open access, creative commons education, and MOOCs in a global context?

Certainly WUaS would be an example, but it might be a greater service for FAHE folks to hear about online education and open source licensing more broadly. I believe that this is where many Friends are really wishing for greater understanding in their own work (as so many of our schools are new to online education or just beginning in that world).

One question of interest would be around academic standards and how you maintain those over the life of the program. Other questions would be around how we might leverage the power of open access education within our settings.

You are very well-versed in this world and I think it would be serviceable to the general population of FAHE if you were able to help us think more about these educational issues surrounding online education and facilitate a discussion around the various issues connected to this.

Thank you!

Wess

I see for example the testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship {S.P.I.C.E.S.} among Quakers as informing kinds of possibilities for love and care, the effects of which I've noticed in Quaker high schools, for example, as very positive and even generating a kind of happiness. By becoming a member of FAHE, MIT OCW-centric WUaS potentially begins to generate further a very f/Friendly ethos.

Veratrum: JuryX - Free Harvard Law Class begins Tu Sept 27 asking "What is Citizenship?", Poland WUaS, Friends Association for Higher Education updates for membership - 1) a clear Quaker tradition; 2) reputable accreditation ( or substantial progress towards such accreditation); 3) and a stable, significant student body," some of which WUaS has, and others of which are goals for WUaS.

Dora,

Sounds nice and fun - and it's been a while since you've been home to Guagov (how do you spell this in English) near Rzeszow! (Sorry you won't be the Scottish Country Dancing this Sunday either - due to a shoulder injury, I probably won't go either actually. Maybe Koh, Ants and Scot will come, however, to the free introductory party on Th, Sept 8th - which I'm guessing wouldn't make sense for you since you're heading to Poland for 2 weeks on the 10th).
You might enjoy this JuryX course from inspiring Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Charles Nesson - https://www.edx.org/course/juryx-deliberations-social-change-harvardx-hls3x-0 - in MIT UnHangouts (similar but different from Google Hangouts). Since you're all but a lawyer in Poland - with its two kinds of law :) ... civil and religious - this course might be interesting to you too re Creative Commons' licensed Poland World University and School http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Poland (planned in Polish, and accrediting on MIT OpenCourseWare - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/) - and with planned online law degrees (in addition to undergraduate BS, Ph.D., M.D. and high school I.B. degrees - all in Polish too). JuryX begins September 27th, a few days after you return. CC is yet another form of law - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Creative_Commons_Law ! :)
I'll probably take this JuryX course for the second time. Charlie Nesson's course are really well designed, internet-centric, inspiring, conversation- and idea-centric and can generate a kind of flourishing in learning ... Might you be interested in this inspiring online course?
Bon voyage, Scott

Hi, Guilford President Fernandes and Friends at FAHE,

Thanks for your prompt email, Donn. I've enjoyed the Friends'Association for Higher Education conferences at both Haverford College, and George Fox University in Oregon - (and your presentation and panels there, Jane, especially. I also gave a presentation at George Fox on Friendly-informed World University and School and Growing the Society of Friends -
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_qhi-ehBdkdSWtPMXpvTVJPVGM/view). Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the Woodbrooke FAHE conference on behalf of World University due to insufficient finances.

Thank you for the updates, Donn, too on the "three criteria for institutional membership were discussed. They were: 1) a clear Quaker tradition; 2) reputable accreditation ( or substantial progress towards such accreditation); 3) and a stable, significant student body," which we had corresponded about this spring.

Concerning these updates, in exploring institutional membership for World University and School in FAHE, startup WUaS will be a pro bono "client" in a UC Berkeley Law class this autumn for the 2nd semester in a row, where we'll develop further in a number of ways legally. Creative Commons' licensed (CC) WUaS is already a 501 c 3 with plans to accredit on CC MIT OpenCourseWare in its 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, to offer online CC Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. degrees (as well as I.B. high school diplomas eventually) first in English but planned in all 200 countries' main and official languages. WUaS also is seeking to be incubated by the University of California for accreditation in a developing WASC senior / BPPE policies. I'm attaching last month's WUaS minutes from WUaS's open monthly business meeting conducted in the manner of Friends. All of this has bearing on item 2) "reputable accreditation" in your FAHE update, as well as possibly developing a stable student body (of highest achievers, which is a WUaS goal).

Concerning FAHE's item 1, I could share a recent blog post of mine laying out WUaS's clear Quaker traditions, for example, but I wonder if you could please let me know what FAHE might look for here in terms of criteria for this, etc. The only outreach / advertising WUaS has done is in Western Friend Quaker magazine interestingly. Check out too the outreach video to FGC young friends that a SF Quaker Friend and I did together here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org.

Dendrobium: World Univ & Sch and its F/friendly-informedness, 1947 Nobel Peace Prize Address

https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/08/dendrobium-world-univ-sch-and-its.html

In terms of 3) "a stable, significant student body," WUaS is seeking our first online applicants this autumn from around the worldfrom all 204 nation states (as if applying to Stanford or MIT) to matriculate online for, in a sense, free CC MIT degrees, in the autumn of 2017. If possible, WUaS will matriculate 2000 undergraduate students. Part of our business models' planned revenue streams involves reaching out to Ministries of Education in all countries, both national and local, as if their students were applying to MIT or Stanford which costs $44,000 per year per student; public K-12 education in this country is free to students, as WUaS would like to be at the University level (like some non-US countries are).

Jane, do you think Guilford graduates would be interested in accrediting CC online Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees at WUaS eventually, as well?

Thank you again for your email, Donn, and looking forward to communicating further about this.

Best, Scott

Hi, Donn and All,

Thanks for the calendar information re WUaS potentially applying for FAHE institutional membership. Let's stay in touch as WUaS develops our accreditation and student body. It would be great for WUaS to receive applications from students from all of FAHE's Quaker colleges' for free best STEM CC MIT OCW and Yale OYC planned Ph.D., Law, and M.D. degrees (with WUaS accrediting on CC MIT OCW, for example, with WASC senior). Are there any non-English speaking colleges which are FAHE members?

Glad Quaker / Friend Burl Amsbury of Colorado (with 3 MIT degrees, including a Master's degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management - which course ware is also available for free at MIT OCW) may be coming on as WUaS Chief Operating Officer.

Here, by the way, are WUaS's two main blogs -

including

"14 WUaS Planned Revenue Streams" (as an example blog entry here) -

It would be great to communicate further about growing WUaS's student bodies (in many languages) at the Ph.D. and professional degree levels (law, M.D.) in collaboration with FAHE Quaker colleges.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Scott

Pine Creek (Pennsylvania): Quaker FAHE - Friends' Association for Higher Education - connecting, and (Nt)Friendly-informed best STEAM CC-4 OCW-centric wiki World University and School

Support of Quaker Leadings in Higher Education by Joining FAHE (again)

Dear David and Donn, (Stephen, David H. and Larry - who is chair of the board at World Univ & Sch, both wings presently),

Thanks for this email opportunity to rejoin FAHE (which I on behalf of World Univ & Sch last attended at Haverford in 2014, I think). While (Nt)Friendly-informed CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch for free-to-students' online degrees (in each of ~200 countries, and in their main languages) continues to seek to collaborate - and newly with Google (having not partnered with edX after all - after ~9 months of communications), to offer further online Bachelor and PhD degrees (then Law and MD and IB high school degrees), WUaS isn't 'there' yet. Glad that Alvian Nur (https://twitter.com/alviannur21) in Indonesia has sent in his high school and college transcripts to WUaS, and not only his 1st year MIT OCW COURSES he'd like to take, but also an entire MIT Program Pathway in statistics and economics (which isn't MIT OCW) -

AAA

https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1396290249232240643?s=20 - for a free-to-student PhD from WUaS, potentially beginning this 9/1/21. (From what he posts on Twitter, costs and the US college application process seem to be significant for him).

Am taking this opportunity, as professor, president, and presiding clerk of World Univ & Sch to communicate with you directly - and will mail in an 'independent scholar' $45 individual membership dues' check (since the required field - online (to Indiana, not Cherry Street in Philadelphia) - doesn't offer 'professor,' 'president,' and 'presiding clerk' as required options). Thank you for this opportunity to rejoin FAHE here via email. (Am living in a 'safe house' presently in the SF Bay Area, for whistle-blowing, about former address, by calling the local police twice - and also possibly for whistle-blowing about the SF Quaker Meeting in a related vein even, and possibly regarding my 2017 whistle-blowing about the illegal sex industry, internationally even). Appreciating Quaker Friendly ethics & history - and about abolition (following on the abolition of slavery) even - and here regarding the illegal sex industry (& and in all ~200 countries and their languages potentially - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2021/07/wuas-minutes-for-71721-for-both-wings-1.html - and see Minute 8 for example, and 9 as well). Thank you.

Thank you too for sharing the FAHE email list some months' ago with WUaS - which emails continue to receive the open WUaS Monthly Business Meeting Minutes (conducted loosely in the manner of Friends / Quakers), and related Agenda and News. And here too is a 2013 video outreach video to FGC participants in Greeley, Colorado, with Friend Sherri Maurin, also from the SF Quaker Meeting, at the time -

Dear Friend,

We enjoyed engaging with you through the monthly Quaker Leadings in Higher Education events, which will resume shortly.  We hope that you are healthy -- that you, your loved ones, and your colleagues are coping well with the ever-lingering pandemic. Although we are holding up fine, a sustained return to more normal conditions would be welcomed.

Having just sent renewal reminders to our FAHE members, this seems a good time to ask you to consider joining at whatever level best fits your situation:

            Individual -- $85

Adjunct Faculty or Independent Scholar -- $45

            Grad Student -- $25

            Undergraduate -- $20

The easy way to join is online.  But, you could also send your check to:  David Harvey, Treasurer -  Friends Association for Higher Education, 2009 Fairway Drive, Greencastle, IN 46135.

Membership dues ensure the continuation of the annual conference — next year at Earlham — and its sense of renewed, collegial community.  We are particularly excited about the focus of the upcoming conference, which will be Friends and Racial Justice. This important and timely theme will also serve as the unifying thread for a related edition of the FAHE Quakers in the Disciplines book series.

While our annual conference remains the highlight of our year and the accompanying book provides a compelling scholarly venue, our online journal, Quaker Higher Education, provides  thought-provoking articles at other times of the year.  Also, during 2020-2021 we launched our successful, monthly, Zoom, seminar series, Quaker Leadings in Higher Education. The quality of these well-attended online sessions has been especially gratifying.

FAHE remains deeply committed to:

  • Providing a supportive relationship and opportunities for fellowship among all who share Quaker ideals of higher education, whether on Quaker or non-Quaker campuses.
  • Enhancing member’s appreciation of Friends religious heritage and nurturing the individual and corporate search for Truth.
  • Lending support to the Quaker ideal of integrating spiritual commitment, academic excellence, and social responsibility.
  • Lending support and encouragement to scholarly research directed toward perceiving and achieving a more perfect human society.
  • Helping to clarify and articulate the distinctively Quaker vision of higher education, in terms of both curriculum and teaching.
  • Assisting Friends Colleges in their efforts to affirm their Quaker heritage.
  • Fostering greater communication and cooperation among Friends educational institutions and the various Friends constituencies to which they may be connected.

For all of these reasons, we hope that you will renew your FAHE membership.

Warm blessings,
