=== Online wiki universities in South Africa and ... for free online best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare degrees ===

Seeking volunteers in South Africa to facilitate a workshop at Wikimania about developing online wiki universities in South Africa and in each of all African countries for free online best STEM CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare degrees in official/main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in each of all Africa's languages. This would occur via "South Africa World University and School" here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/South_Africa (and other African countries accessible from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States). Languages are/will be accessible from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - in each of all African languages. World Univ. and Sch. - worlduniversityandschool.org - donated itself to Wikidata/Wikibase in 2015 for co-development, and got a new WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki last year in these regards too. (I won't be able to attend due to lack of finances). Multiple creative educational wiki opportunities involved with this project. WUaS is planning to offer online MIT OpenCourseWare-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, International Baccalaureate high school, and online Medical degrees, with online teaching hospitals for clinical care - again with Wikidata/Wikibase structured knowledge database - and in each of all African countries' official main languages. “Bridging knowledge gaps, the *ubuntu* way forward.” If someone would like to submit a workshop proposal please let me know at info@worlduniversityandschool.org, and I'll help co-develop this remotely. Thanks. --~~~~

Thanks, Jonathan, for your great Stanford talk yesterday - http://events.stanford.edu/events/746/74637/ .

And very nice to meet you afterward, and chat in passing. Congratulations on your imminent baby too! And what was The Friends' School like in Tasmania?

How best to communicate further about "Accelerating Eulerian Fluid Simulation With Convolutional Networks" with regards, for example, to creating a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs' pools, and for brain research too, for example, at the cellular and atomic levels (and for oceanography+, and what I'm calling STEM ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy)?

(Think Google Street View w time slider/Maps/Earth & at the cellular & atomic levels with Minecraft/SL/OpenSimulator too e.g. https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/955218421267841024).

Here's a recent email I sent to Cornell Prof Jim Sethna, who spoke at Stanford too, about what I have in mind -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/02/dunckerocampus-pipefish-stanford-talk.html.

I'm interested here in World University and School facilitating a realistic virtual UNIVERSE actually - ONE UNIVERSE ... ONE ACTUAL < > VIRTUAL UNIVERSE ... so much of this process could be extended infinitely with machine learning. (Might I explore giving a talk about this at Google, by any chance?)

Very nice to meet you and thanks for your excellent talk.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi M,

Very nice to talk just now.

Maybe if I get the faculty position at MIT, they'll have dental insurance there, which then would make postponing getting a new full dental exam and Xrays sensible, for example.

ORTHOGONAL and COUNTER-INTUITIVE THINKER - re MIT Media Lab?

I think

A) teaching "Society, Information Technology, and the Global University" (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html),

B) major universities planned in all ~200 countries' official main languages for free CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees, with

C) n-p https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch?lang=en and f-p https://twitter.com/WUaSPress wings, and

D) wiki schools in all 7,099 living languages and

E) an interactive realistic virtual earth/universe at cell and atom levels, as STEM field site

are good examples of this.

Hi M,

Have to get this interactive realistic virtual earth going, so that you could take some photos/videos of the leak-in-your-house area, and trace the source back into the earth behind the cement cinder block foundation, and then you could design how a repair would work, so that a little Kubota tractor robot could be brought into your basement and repair this (dig out the basement wall corner, supporting the house, seal it up, and then replace the foundation) - all in a Do It Yourself vein. :) ... all in a little realistic virtual earth.

This kind of realistic virtual earth approach to home repair, if it could include, for example, electrical fixes and architectural additions - and if free in a Google way - could be a big big help for people around the world.

Scottish Country Dancing was fun last night in San Jose ... Heading to Stanford soon ...
What are you up to today? Nice to talk last night.

P.S.

But wait, M, a big root from the gigantic old elm, 15 feet away from the corner of the house that leaks, has to be cut some ... #RealisticVirtualEarth will be able to calculate how much to cut to keep the tree sturdy in storms, and to allow for Kuboti the Tractor-Robot-Foundation-Specialist to seal the foundation too! :)

October - December 2017

Hi T Tomato,

Good class today.

Re the genetic revolution, check out this 1:35 second video about CRISPR gene editing software, from MIT and Harvard's Broad Institute - https://www.broadinstitute.org/what-broad/areas-focus/project-spotlight/questions-and-answers-about-crispr - in regards to our conversation about the genetic revolution from a contemporary perspective. The great CRISPR talk I heard yesterday at Stanford by UC Berkeley's Jennifer Doudna, with a Harvard Ph.D., was about Cas9 CRISPR developments as well - re this video).

*
Hi T Tomato,

Good course yesterday. Here are some further related resources and clarifications.

Here's the great day-long MIT Media Lab "Forbidden Research" conference in video from last year - https://www.media.mit.edu/events/forbidden/overview . The research by MIT's Kevin Esvelt in genetics and CRISPR, - http://opentranscripts.org/transcript/messing-with-nature-genetics/ - and possibly that by Harvard Prof George Church, and Stanford Prof Megan Palmer, could be of particular interest to you.

Here, too, is my recent correspondence with MIT Prof. Dick Schmalensee - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/pinus-palustris-near-term-policy.html - and where I mention you taking his course at World University and School.

Some further definitions re - Society, Information Technology, and the Global University ... http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html -
... While society can mean - "the aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community" - for Castells it further refers to "social, political, economic and cultural changes caused by the spread of networked, digital information and communications technologies," with intellectual origins for Castells going back to "social theorists such as Georg Simmel who analyzed the effect of modernization and industrial capitalism on complex patterns of affiliation, organization, production and experience" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_society).

And information for Castells is related "to data and knowledge" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information - and "where its creation, distribution, use, integration and manipulation is a significant economic, political, and cultural activity" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_society).

Cheers, Scott

*
Hi T Tomato,

I looked up "crispr and algae biofuels" and "blockchain and biofuels" and found the following possibly helpful resources. What are you finding in these regards?

And I think the blockchain ledger might still be very germane and helpful for supporting your emerging CRISPR gene editing / energy-related thesis for your paper.

blockchain and biofuels

Theses/ arguments usually contain a "because ... " in them. E.g. "I want to argue/suggest explicitly that ... because ... " And research questions typically develop with a very specific focus ... (editing a specific locus on a gene ... because it might work well with the emergent energy blockchain specifically for airline fuels etc). It's the explicit and specificity that help generatively focus interesting writing and ideas.

In developing / riffing with a rough draft of your 5 page research paper for next week, I'll seek to come into conversation a bit further with this - http://www.tanyatomato.com/2017/11/112417-potential-paper.html - in these regards, as well.

Here are beginning related WUaS Subjects -

Check out the MIT OCW here, and in terms of other possible resources for your paper.

Cheers,
Scott

Hi T Tomato,

Nice to have "Society, Information Technology and the Global University" class - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - with you again just now.
My comments on your paper so far:
B) How best to bring in course ideas further and specifically? 3-4 main ideas?
- STEM cell implications?
- Genome was decoded ahead of schedule due to computing – an expression of synergies of some of these main technologies …
- How to bring in the Internet itself into your paper's thesis?
- How genetic engineering revolution is part of Information technology revolution
- How recombinant DNA works
- How CRISPR develops these recombinant DNA advances we touched on in course. Specifics?
Eg
Specific algae species
Specific CRISPR-Cas9 genetic strands
specific scalability

C) How algae into biofuels works scientifically – for others – as citizen science?
D) Citations, references, bibliographic traces (academically, but also for others too - and potentially for their citizen science)
E) Writing
- Refine and make EXPLICIT your argument / thesis
- Your main points

- Your conclusion

*
Re this course, here are some further theses / conclusions to explore:

it’s particularly the synergies of the genetic engineering revolution with computing, newly because of CRISPR because … how and why - with specific companies / breakthroughs in algae to biofuel production? What might computing add further re CRISPR?

Stanford talk - "Biology and Technology of CRISPR Systems"

Dear Jennifer Doudna,

Very nice to meet you and thanks for your excellent talk at  - http://events.stanford.edu/events/727/72717/ .

It would be great to explore further questions of modeling genes in a realistic virtual earth (and with regard to CRISPR technologies especially) and at the cellular, atomic and subatomic levels too, with regards to IGI. What might be the best way to do this?

World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 358 languages with CC MIT OCW in 7 languages (ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/), would also be very interested in eventually hiring graduate student physics' instructors learning to become faculty, and seeking teaching experience.

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi M,

How are you? How's your Sunday going?

Am enjoying the wonderful book "Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard." Have you read this 1998 book by Kiran Desai (from India, but living in the U.S.)? Its back cover description reads "A festival of comic eccentricity - exudes charisma, poetry, and joy in language and life" (Baltimore Sun) which is apt :) And the NYTs says "Enchanting ..." ... You might enjoy it a lot. (E gave it to me a while ago). After our dinner last Sunday, I came home and read the last chapter of this wonderful comic satire ("Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard"), then began its first chapter again, - delightfully once more. India is so interesting, and this book does justice to its-own-unique-jazz-of-life-there in so many ways - and very humorously. Yay for the novel! :)

Cultural design: If you look down and slightly to the right to the center when driving my 2005 Prius, you'll see the MPG average number, and if you drive generally slower than 65 mph looking at the odometer in front of you, (as the driver), which many people seem to enjoy seeing go up as they drive fast, the MPG (Miles per Gallon) number to the right can go UP quite readily. So the MPG number goes up when the Odometer/Speedometer number goes down - often. Some people like to see some kinds of numbers going up in this time we live in, so why not the average MPG number - lowering fuel costs and pollution etc? Some Americans / Westerners seem culturally fixated however on speed / odometers / speedometers - maybe it's the higher faster stronger thing of the Olympics. But I think of this alternative number (MPG) going up as a kind of Taoist or even Shinto (balance in nature?) approach to technology design. It's also kind of a meditative way of thinking (looking down, quieting the mind, and perhaps off in an oblique direction) as well perhaps. And if you look down and to the left you can look backwards via the mirror ... Hmmm ... This 12 year old Toyota Prius is so well-designed (and gets about ~44 miles per gallon fuel efficiency - amazing!), and I'm very appreciative of this :) (although I have to repair both the clicking sound around the shifter for ~700 $ and the "actuator" in the passenger door for another ~$700 soon ). :(

As you know, I went to to the newly built open-classroom-schools, Ridge Hill School near New Haven CT in about '69 and then to Green Acres School in Rockville MD ~'71. Here are these two open-classroom schools I went to - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/967868732163833862 - and you can visit them a bit in Google Street View now too, and they still look familiar, but the time slider feature isn't yet available to take one back to the year one wants to see / immerse oneself in, for example. The newly built-at-the-time Ridge Hill School in Hamden, CT, had big open classrooms named Apollo and Gemini, if I remember clearly - and named after the recent space missions ... and coming out of the 1960s, this architecture expresses a whole new way of thinking about school and education :) And my teachers at the Newhall Street School in New Haven (preceding Ridge Hill and Green Acres) were mostly African American, if I remember correctly too - a Mrs. Cofield for one. What do you recall of these schools, M?

May head Scottish Country Dancing tomorrow evening in San Jose from Stanford, to dance a bit, having only gone to this one a few times.

Dunckerocampus (pipefish): Stanford talk - Prof. James Sethna - "Sloppy models, Differential geometry, and How Science Works", Optimal Experimentation in an interactive realistic virtual earth, In what ways could one develop B.F. Skinner's behaviorist experiments in a realistic virtual earth, such that one could replicate their results virtually?, "ONE EARTH" ~ ONE ACTUAL < > VIRTUAL EARTH, After the Stanford Law CodeX meeting on 2/22/18 , New Science?

Thanks for your fascinating Stanford talk "Sloppy models, Differential geometry, and How Science Works" on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 - http://events.stanford.edu/events/731/73181/. Very nice to meet you afterward in passing as well. And thanks for inviting me to send you an email about the following.

Per my question in the Q&A: how best to begin to develop an interactive realistic virtual earth/universe for (optimal) experimentation - and with regard to computational biology, and differential geometry?

Think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth, Brain, Hangouts-into-Avatar-Bots, and which is group build-able like Minecraft (with a virtual-actual correspondence with Lego and the physical), Second Life/OpenSim (but realistic, not cartoon-esque) - and at the cellular and atomic levels too. (This would be a STEM field site and classrooms. Visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate, for example, here, in Google Street View ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ... accessible from here: https://twitter.com/HarbinBook?lang=en ~ and "walk" down the road 4 miles to Middletown, CA. to get an early view of where this might be heading, but where one can't yet drill down into a tree, for example, to the cellular or atomic levels).

I hope such a realistic virtual earth with SPECIES and again at the cellular and atomic levels will eventually be used for tele-medicine and, for example, even robotic surgery. CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School, which I'm developing, is planning online medical schools with online teaching hospitals in all ~200 countries' official languages.

And this interactive realistic virtual earth planned at the cellular and atomic levels, would also be for bioengineering, for example, again with all species, and could thus facilitate further experimentation (see the WUaS Swiki subjects for biomedical engineering and experimentation here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Biological_Engineering and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Experimentation - and their related MIT OCW courses, which may eventually entail students to help develop this project).

While some of the BF Skinner resources, and my thinking about this thus far, may be of help here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/jack-pine-bf-skinner-and-operant.html (and here at bottom for further "sloppiness" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/myosotis-three-resources-on-blockchain.html - in the "experiment" label in my blog) - I'm particularly curious about the following.

In what ways could one develop Skinner's behaviorist experiments in a realistic virtual earth, such that one could replicate their results virtually? Furthermore, in what ways could one convert all videos of Skinner's experiments into a 3D interactive virtual world with a new conversion application/program such that with this, could one then design new behaviorist experiments with virtual pigeons and mice? And lastly, in what ways could one, with computational biology, connect the learning that would occur here virtually - with these virtual schedules of reinforcement (seems ripe for differential geometry) - with virtual pigeon and mice brain neurophysiology, as a fairly new development of Skinner's behaviorist experiments, and at the cellular and the atomic levels to trace, and experiment anew, with neural pathways of learning, among many other things?

From these virtual behaviorist experiments, I think one could develop all kinds of other virtual rigorous optimal experimentation in an interactive realistic virtual earth.

(In my actual <> virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ I'm particular interested in the brain chemistry that can occur in the Harbin warm pool re questions of eliciting bliss - e.g. https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) -  and would like to examine this virtually, and potentially physically with brain wave head sets, for example, while people are soaking A) in the Harbin warm pool, or B) in their bath tubs at home, while visiting Harbin actually or virtually. I see this as remarkably fertile ground for experimentation as well, if the interactive realistic virtual earth at the cellular and atomic levels was developed enough as STEM tools). What are natural bliss in the brain, musical bliss, and even re X, for example, computation biologically, neuro-chemically and experimentally? And can we human primates, for example, learn how to elicit bliss naturally - with virtual schedules of reinforcement?

How best to develop a realistic virtual earth for optimal experimentation with computational biology and differential geometry?

Thank you again for your excellent talk, and very nice to meet you.

I hope your visit to Stanford was salutary, and looking forward very much to communicating further about all of this with time. (I haven't yet heard back about a MIT Media Lab faculty position I've applied for, and hope to be in Cambridge this autumn, and back in California for actual / virtual Harbin research in January).

Best regards,
Scott

One Virtual Universe

It won't be the same

helluva database

everything is so fragmented ~
all of this amazing computer STEM modeling of the earth is distributed on every body's hard drives and so spread out!

One Earth, One Universe!

Could we model this neuronal firing process in a virtual brain of a pigeon or mouse in a realistic virtual earth?

Dear Axel, Roland, Denny, and Markus,

Great to talk with you after the interesting Stanford Law CodeX meeting yesterday, Axel - https://law.stanford.edu/2018/02/20/codex-meeting-2-22/

I also would like to introduce you all here, if you don't know each other. Axel is a visiting researcher at Stanford, Roland is the Executive Director of CodeX and a faculty member at Stanford Law School, and Denny and Markus are founders of Wikidata / Wikibase (as I understand this) and Denny works at Google now, while Markus and Axel are both computer science Professors in Germany and Austria.

Axel, and all, as insight in Austria World University and School, which will become accessible from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - and at a key moment of WUaS developing in our new WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki and with / INTO Wikidata/Wikibase, with WUaS's SUBJECT TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE (from the old WUaS Wikia wiki which WUaS is migrating from, and which has about 726 wiki subject pages), here's Germany WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Germany - but which not yet in German too.

Question: How best to code the WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki SUBJECT_TEMPLATE with Wikidata/Wikibase, and anticipating all 298 of Wikipedia's languages, and eventually all 7,099 living languages? Translation of the section headings will be part of this, but I'm not sure which section headings will get a Q-item, for example. Which section headings and what else might get Q-items? And how best also, at this stage, to plan for 7.5 billion endusers / learners / Universitians, and in each of all 7,099 living languages - via the SUBJECT TEMPLATE with Wikidata/Wikibase, so we can start registering students and creating transcripts linked to the MIT OCW courses, for example?

And in particular, which of these many academic and creative wiki subjects for open teaching and learning - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - (was: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects) will get a Q-item and how will this develop inter-lingually?

On Valentine's Day, John Lewis added some new developers to our Phabricator page here - https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T2276 - "Develop SUBJECT TEMPLATE re WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki" ... but this page isn't very active yet.

I also just want to follow up with some "innovations" with regards to both World University and School as well as the creation of a realistic virtual earth at the street view, cellular, and atomic levels as a STEM field site, planned in all ~200 countries' languages, and in all 7,099 living languages, and in all 8475 entries in languages.

Here's the "global university" label in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/global%20university.

And here's the "virtual world" label from my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/virtual%20world.

And here too is World University and School's blog itself - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/.

Any chance I could please begin adding new wiki Subject pages, like the Regions' page (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Regions), newly in WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki WITH Wikidata / Wikibase - as well as already registered / matriculated students at World University and School (for free CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric online degrees)? And any chance that any of you know a student or post-Doc, from Austria, for example, (such as Bernhard Waitl was), who could help develop Austria WUaS in German?

Thank you!

Best regards, Scott
