Havusu canyon, China: Harbin notes, Film there, Therapy

Harbin is almost cold this eve.

At the gate I saw both M & E ... . M just returned to Harbin yesterday to begin to work again at Harbin. M's energy is great, - solid, friendly, Lake County, California-steady, salt of the earth ...

nice big hug in the pool area with C who is originally from Germany (lived on Hawaii for 23 yrs with her biodynamically farming husband) as I walked in from the village path

in the pools relaxation response in lotus ... A little bliss only ... A fair number of male couples ....

saw the film 'Cashback' at 9 ... somewhat erotic British well done tale of a grocery clerk / artist / drawer of nudes who freezed time and saw the world differently then - particularly vis-a-vis beautiful naked women ... Love story ... interesting once again in light of thinking about primates ...

... vis-a-vis film I also wonder to what degree film is engaged as psychotherapy at Harbin where people - residents and visitors) use the myriad of narratives to explicate and put in perspective, and even co-constitute new ways of thinking about challenges or knotty problems in their lives. To what degree can & does someone like Ish, or a Harbin film chooser, show films specifically to this end, - in all its cultural indirectness eg who can know whom will see what film, what narratives within the film will have significance as therapy, or for understanding, etc. beyond the film-chooser and the 'passive' film recipients connection (eg Ish had a film in mind for this person, whether s/he sees it or not in the Harbin theater while visiting)

Harbin is a therapeutic place, and Ish is in a kind of fascinating role as lead therapist/head clinician, vis-a-vis its milieu, his knowledge of what's worked in the past, and the symbolic engagements he can make eg leaving the book 'The Quiet American' on a bench outside Fern, etc.

This film leads me to wonder In what ways might we go much further and create a kind of heaven or free space (vis-a-vis B, and with a lot of trust) we'd like to live in ...? How could Harbin grow in this way?

bed & sleep now

Mount Wuyi, China: What ways might World Univ & Sch develop a course/degree focus specifically on ENJOYMENT / HAPPINESS for 18 yrs old overachievers?

World University & School is curious in what ways WUaS might,

as an experiment,

develop a course / degree focus specifically on enjoyment / happiness for 18 yr old overachievers,

matriculating in 2014.

In what ways could the 32 courses

(out of 400-ish? MIT OCW possibilities out of MIT's total 2,045 courses)

over the 4 years that students will take them,

be read / studied for more than 'flow' (Csikszentmihalyi),

but for happiness & bliss, as well,

in learning critical thinking & 'knowledge about' a field/subject

(e.g. in chemistry,

One way would be to ask 20 years old overachievers already attending MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cambridge, etc.

what they love while studying and learning, and build on this? :)

Such an experiment could then inform much education at all levels.

... an online 'enjoyment / happiness' approach to a MIT education? :)

by finding the students who want to learn & focus,

who do so without conflict,

and then WUaS would add readings, discussions, problem sets and experiments in 32 courses (over 4 years) per student,

chosen by experienced MIT / great universities' faculty,

and build on this? ...

This approach makes sense.

Besides the degrees implicit in MIT Open Course Ware,

WUaS would like, for example, to add degrees in

China/Chinese History/Languages
(Reed added a Chinese Humanities aspect to its Humanities' program a few years ago)

India / Indian History /Languages from open course ware ... :)

and possibly Dialogue http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Dialogue

Longmen Grottoes: World University & School's budding Law School, Scottish Law, Nation States' Law, Constitutional, International and Internet Law

May add the BBC article on Nat Fraser's murder case reversal

"Nat Fraser wins appeal to quash murder conviction"
(By Reevel Alderson, Home affairs correspondent, BBC Scotland, May 25, 2011)

to wiki World University & School's budding Law School

also here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses ....

for the upcoming, online British / Scots' one/two Law Schools :)

(The Scottish legal system is old and independent relative to other legal systems on the British Isles).

Scots got political independence in 1997 after 300-700 years,

and after trying before that most recently in 1976-77 :),

and such independence helps further questions of Nation State-hood -

at WUaS ...

(WUaS is planning around 50-100 accredited, free, online Law Schools - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wikiCourses - to see the beginnings of the current Law School in English, in and out of around 175 - 200 countries/nation states/places :)

WUaS's 50-100+ Law Schools will further define Nation State / Constitutional Law significantly ...

eg the Finns who head the WUaS Finnish Law School will probably talk a fair amount with the Swedes who head the WUaS Swedish Law School about what gets taught in the 3 year curriculum, etc ...

and the Turks with the Greeks ...

lots of talking ahead about education,

all the while 'editing this page' at these online, free WUaS Law Schools

for overachievers

... and the neighboring African states with Law Schools will talk with each other,

and the Welsh with the English with the Irish with the Scots ... Cornish, York and Manx, too?

The application system for schools will be akin to the UNESCO world heritage process ...

... since, eventually lawyers will be practicing in courts of law ...

And the Chinese with the Japanese & the Koreans,

the south Koreans with the north Koreans,

... all editing their Law Schools

with this paper, that court ruling, or this book ...

Concerning these WUaS online Law Schools,

Chinese lawyers will probably define their curriculum with the Japanese & Korean legal professors,

the south Koreans with the north Koreans, and the Turks with the Greeks ...

& all editing their Law Schools -

seems like WUaS may deal a lot with international legal accrediting bodies as well ...

makes sense,

and will create more great knowledge-oriented jobs,

and careers ...

yes, yes, yes ...

Constitutional, international and internet law seem likely foci at WUaS ...

Purnululu: Practicing the piano growing up (ages 6-12), unenjoyable, isolating, Kids' Practicing, Musical Instrument Playing as Dialogue?

Practicing the piano growing up (ages 6-12)

was a little unenjoyable

because it felt isolating at times

(but I'm glad I play a few Bach Inventions slowly & read music now) ...

Here are some guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument
from Wynton Marsalis & Yo yo Ma:

(also here:

How to add to these guidelines?

Pairbond & Troopbond
(John Money 1988: 115)

around practicing

- e.g. kids & parents, etc. ?

How to turn practicing into a DIALOGUE,

and now online?

In what ways can you,

for yourself,

generate virtual, fun experiences,

(in your own bodymind)

whether by turning on the Grateful Dead,

or watching a Mozart opera (buffa),

or generate fun experiences even while practicing a musical instrument,

and via a dialogue WITH the music,

or with a friend, musically,

Can you turn a musical score into psychedelia

(richly imaginative, almost alive text:),

digitally & naturally,

and then rif with this :) ?

About kids' practicing & playing a musical instrument,

I like the Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar model

(who just played at San Francisco's Davies' Symphony Hall),

where Ravi probably brought Anoushka to music lessons (or something like this),

or taught her,

and they've now played together for decades ...

with an invitation to wiki-add teaching & learning resources,

and engage (adhibit),

also in a John Moneyian sense (see above), but musically :)

Ravi Shankar's music,

in particular,

can get pretty virtual for me (transcendent) ...

... and we might teach, learn and play this online,

from home :)

Check out his Three Ragas (1957) :) ... (it's playing now here at home, as I write this)

and eventually from the Digital Public Library of America, which will partly emerge here:

... an idea which has long been implicit at WUaS here ...

but the US government has realized it ...

Please register your hypotheses! :)

e.g. I hypothesize that my left leg is a 1/2 inch longer than my right because I started bagpiping around age 13 as I was starting to grow tall, and the difficulty of playing / filling the bag held under the left arm lead to this extra leg length :) ...

This is a good question for a research physiologist, or ...

I'll look to add this hypothesis to http://clinicaltrials.gov .

Why do our bodies, in general, grow symmetrically?

Chillingham wild cattle: Saw a little, playful headbutting between two, baby cows, calves, near Harbin, Hedwig, Culture

Outside / Inside Harbin field notes

Saw a little, playful headbutting
between two, baby cows, calves,
- were they male or female?
I don't know -
on a beautiful, oak ridge,
in rural Lake County, California,
this morn. The oak trees,
dotting the ridge, above them,
in full, spring leaf,
filled out this Ferdinand scene.
This could be Greece, or Spain,
in mediterranean, inland California,
And this baby playfulness,
perhaps 10 cows and calves
all around,
on a perfect day,
has probably gone on
long before that thriving
culture on Samos, Greece,
with its aqueduct,
the 2800 year old
Tunnel of Eupalinos,
- Herodotus's 8th world wonder,
I think -
long before the first cities
of 10,000 years ago, -
as part of agriculture,
in time immemorial.

Two woodpeckers then alit
on a branch, very close,
black & white with red heads -
a pair they were, -
then flipped under the branch,
still attached, upside down,
pecked a little,
and flew away, displaying
their magnificent wings from
below, black & white,
all spread out so expansively.

These rolling hills & trees,
a bucolic, pastoral, calming scene,
after good, needed sleep, -
such beauty in solo-ness.

The cows are gone, now.

A brown truck,
a little fumy,
with two men of
Spanish-Mexican descent,
drives by on this
wide, beautiful, well-maintained,
dirt road ... They look like
salts of the earth,
one man smiling,
and I smile at him,
in passing.
Who are they,
in this other world?
Might they have staged
this gentle calve-romp, -

for, soon after the headbutting,
a calf rolled over, almost playfully,
too cute,
and stood back up,
up on the ridge,
where I had seen turkeys,
of an earlier poem -

through knowledge of &
skill with livestock and cattle.

A kid on a too-small, motor scooter,
- that looks like fun,
and this could be Greece, again -
then passes, legs asunder,
hair flying, under his knit hat.
He looks as if he may be
heading to school.
Are his hands cold?

Ranchland, with pasture and oaks,
on both sides of this road,
sun shining, no houses ...
in this out of the way place.

Soon to Harbin ...

Harbin ...
yes ...
It's always different,
its own thing,
and enlivening.

The Harbin RV/trailer park is gone, completely,
after decades and decades, -
I walked up through its main road,
off of which were about 7 dwelling-spaces on each side,
almost like a fern frond.
I had only visited it possibly 2-3 times in 2005.
And at least two of its residents I know,
who lived there for years, are now in SG, 3 miles away.

I spent a longer time in the pools than I have in a long time ... Saw many familiar faces, from the quiet in the pools ... more than usual, - curious & not sure why.

b & e c were walking near where I ate my picnic dinner on the back tailgate in my car (Subaru Legacy L, 2.2 liter), and as I was practicing piobaireachd on my practice chanter. (These days I regularly sleep in my car, when at Harbin, 'in the field,' for my ongoing, actual/virtual Harbin ethnography). Nice to see them ... With atheistically Friendly inclinations, I went to a number of silent meetings (4 -7) at different Quakers' homes in Lake County in 2008, and got to know them that way ... We had a little silent meeting in the harbin temple together in 2005, as it was being built ... :), when I first made contact with Lake County Friends.

nice dance in the temple this evening

curious, well-done, 2nd film in the theater - 'hedwig and the angry inch' - about a tranny, a transgender person, who was born in east berlin and came to the US, - Providence, RI - and became a kind of tranny rock star & celebrity, in a way singing his anger at his American army father, who had fondled him when s/he was a little kid.

It might have been shocking at one time to me, but seen in the light of my current thinking vis-a-vis common chimps (as primates that do harm, war, violence, are male-dominated, and, of course, sexual) & bonobo chimps (as very sexual in all couplings, egalitarian, matriarchal, relatively peaceable - no known instances of fatalities, and left bank-chimps; humans can learn!), the tranny (Hedwig) - male ('Tommy Gnosis') attraction depicted in the film was far less sexual than what I understand bonobos, in all kinds of sexual pairings, to engage in sexually. I see these somewhat sad narratives of 'Hedwig' as so emergent from modernities' cultural cross-winds (e.g. with GI/army father, east german mother, stationed forces, u.s., germany, varying sexual mores) ... Interesting insights into the '60s and its 'winds', as well. Hedwig was born in 1961, and later, herself (now), around the time of a botched sex change operation, married a male African American US officer while in Germany. Curious what I might learn about eroticism ... between men & women from this film ... Cultural craziness ... culture and biology (we, as human primates) create so many interesting processes and temporalities, which we don't even see as cultural or biological, or are even aware of as such, as we are living these processes and temporalities, - painfully, for Hedwig, although it needn't have been, except for the ways people see things socioculturally and biologically ... :)

Fern community kitchen at Harbin has new cabinets and countertops ... More nice wood & wood color ... (I think the job was finished on or around this day).

but more curious about bliss, harbin, and eliciting this

... and love with a friend

Friend from college, decades ago:

Hey Scottie.
I resolved to check this page more after 50. LOL. Still way too much to catch up on, though. Who'd've thought 25 years ago that we'd be in touch still... I dunno. For me, crossing the Pacific in '85 (to Japan) was perceived as a break, neither malevolent nor bitter... and now trying to catch up on 25 years without much chance of convergence is rather daunting. Blah blah blah. Is there a way to build on Hum? Engaging texts is the best means. There are no substitutes. Having said that, I force students to close read films, and they resist at first. Some flower.

M! ... just came from Reed gathering last eve near Stanford :)

Will you attend centennial?

Texts (probably online), yes, for many reasons,

but as a Reed academic 'overachiever,'

what would you say inspires you & your students further to explore rich engagement with such Hum. ideas,

fulsomely & in a sustained way?

(How to cultivate enjoyment with Hum?)

Friend from college, decades ago:

Wow... lucky you. Dunno about the centennial; the timing renders attendance unlikely. Well, the fostering of engagement requires reciprocal engagement over time by a mentor. Hence, two or three 90-minute conferences, with face-to-face time and heated exchange, seems to work best. I still have yet to engage meaningfully with distance learning.

You've been away a long, long time ... very glad to hear your journeying, beginning so long ago, has been salutary ...

Friend from college, decades ago:

in a word: dialog.

TIme for sleep now... Sweet dreams

Since Dancing, Tai Chi & Movement promote & further health and well-being, bodymind-wise, and WUaS college course degrees will probably be done by overachievers from home, World Univ & Sch may require 30 minutes per day of such movement at home with favorite music (with a face-to-face video possibility?) How to articulate 'required' courses (for 18-27 yr olds, & all) with 'flow' (enjoyment - absorbed minds) experiences - the more enjoyable the 'flow' experiences the better? :)

Healthy, fit bodyminds engaging enjoyable learning online from home?

Dialog with knowledgeable, skillful, connectible-idea-wise mentors for WUaS credit classes, conference style, (with MIT faculty especially on video? - for knowledge & since they've already taught OCW ?), all via virtual worlds with animated avatar faces, but more likely, multiple Skype windows ‎on a screen, for group idea sharing (riffing about 'The Odyssey,' while learning to develop a thesis in writing, or playing instruments together online in the WUaS Music School?) ... so that this process is as fun as playing in a rock band.

How to bring in bliss to the face-to-face digital dialog?

Locust lobster: Language HotSpots, 1000s of smaller languages at risk, WUaS wants to wiki-faciltate ALL language, Wiki-schools

I heard an interesting talk at Stanford today on Language HotSpots -

http://www.swarthmore.edu/SocSci/langhotspots/ -

with 1000s of smaller languages at risk.

WUaS wants to wiki-faciltate preservation and revitalization of ALL languages -

each as a wiki-school

and archive or library

... a handheld video device in the hands of non-literate people

(e.g. the 8 remaining speakers of a language, with the help of an anthropologist)

... and to create sociocultural processes -

to generate an online culture or discourse -

around each language :)

A linguist yesterday in a talk at Stanford schematized language trees as 'genetically'-related ...

Why not 'memetically'- (memes - replicating cultural units)?

This would transform such familar language trees in many ways.

He also characterized sociocultural processes as 'knowledge systems,' which idea is NOT often used these days in Anthropology.

Besides symbol & communication systems ...

‎... for 'language-socio-culture,' why not memetic systems, as well?

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Anthropology :)

The 'culture' question ...

How to represent/think about 'culture'? (there are so many ways to re-state this) -

Asking such questions often devolve for me into questions of counterculture ...

Please add - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Anthropology AND http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Primatology ...

Let's create a new anthropological form of publishing using handheld video computers for this :)

e.g. an example of the primatology of grief might be when the chimp Flint or Fegan (?) loses his mother Flo in Jane Goodall's

'In the Shadow of Man,'

which I read probably in 1974(?)

... so the anthropology of this primatology of grief might be an analysis of Jane Goodall's response,

Bird alighting: Cultivate further enjoyment-in-learning approaches, online, for credit & degrees, Move away from struggle, conflict or carrot models

In free, open, wiki World Univ & Sch,

in what ways is it possible to cultivate further enjoyment-in-learning approaches ('Flow"), online, ...

for credit & degrees,

and move away from struggle-or-conflict, or carrot-and-stick models.

For Csikszentmihalyi, 'Flow' - enjoyment -

Learners - how to focus more richly, ...

Let's rif, or improvise creatively, with 'flow' vis-a-vis learning at WUaS :)

for you and all of us, for open, WUaS digital innovation gardening -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/ -

Innovate away at this upcoming WUaS Media Lab :)

Looks like taxes for U.S. nonprofits with property, especially, may be going up.

Check out this Boston example -

Cooper, Michael. 2011. Squeezed Cities Ask Nonprofits for More Money. May 12.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/article?a=788101 -

Advantages in going virtual, -

WUaS is offering a WHALE of 'community benefits' (per the article) ...

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Educational_Software ...

FREE educational software, for example.

In what ways might World University & School,

or Universitians,

fruitfully ORCHESTRATE

doing Physics

or Mathematics

problems (MIT OCW)

TOGETHER WITH listening to the Grateful Dead or Mozart ...

New innovative approaches, with GREAT enjoyment, to LEARNING are so possible and many :)

Will every Subject page -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects -

yea, every page (e.g. Museums, et al.),

have an easy, fun, creative 'Try Making This Digitally' section,

where you can make something online innovatively? :) What would this be for 'Anthropology' or 'Loving Bliss Eliciting'?

... and in the Music School, oui, oui :)

In so many ways, the WUaS faculty will become

the shepherds,

key decision-makers,

or key facilitators

(because they know their subjects, esp. v-a-v innovation ahead, and as great faculty often are).

WUaS hopes to begin its FREE degree programs

(BA in 2014, PhD, Law, Medicine)

with MIT OCW (2,045 free courses presently) / Harvard

faculty streamed into virtual spaces ...

... with WUaS graduate students as in-world instructors/graders at http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/ . :)

In year 3 of the WUaS medical school (2019?),

with possible, first matriculating class in 2017,

after developing the WUaS BA, Ph.D., Law degree programs,

with 1st matriculating classes in 2014 2015 & 2016, respectively,

hopefully with MIT OCW & Harvard open courses,

will the physical site be Stanford Medical Centers?

Love it :) ... bird landing :)

thinks it looks like WUaS's 'products' are its free BA, PhD, Law, & MD programs,

along with each virtual class of students it produces

(hopefully with a kind MIT OCW, Stanford & Harvard collaborative, educational initiative for open courses).

Hmmm, - expanding definition of PRODUCT emerging - Love it :).

Perhaps some graduates will write a lot of fascinating code along the way,

and otherwise produce ‎... digitally,

and bequest their companies to WUAS, like Amar Bose did to MIT.

‎... and faculty & students' papers, dissertations, & projects, of course, are 'products,' of a sort ...

Vaccinium corybosum: Why was Bartholomew Cubbins generating so many hats in Dr. Seuss's 'The 500 Hats of ... '? Very curious, indeed, Other delights

Why was Bartholomew Cubbins generating so many hats in

Dr. Seuss's 'The 500 Hats of ... '

Very curious, indeed.

For other delights,

check out WUaS's Children's Literature & Wisdom at

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Children%27s_Literature_and_Wisdom ...

kids' book power!

While WUaS is focusing on university accreditation,

it does wiki-facilitate digital learning delights for kids.

Gamma ray emissions: World Univ & Sch would love to come into long conversation with Stephen Hawking, for Physics and for Applications & Programs

World University and School would love to come into long conversation with Stephen Hawking -

Life and the Cosmos, Word by Painstaking Word"
(New York Ttimes, May 10, 2011)
http://mobile.nytimes.com/article?a=786578 -

for both WUaS online, idea-generativity 'Physics' -

and for Applications & Programs

that will especially help geniuses with disabilities.

African milk goat: Give a Goat, World Univ & Sch in every African and all villages, All Languages, nontheistically Friendly Quaker Business Practice

Like the kid's book 'Give a Goat,'

I hope World University and School will be a school in every village in Africa, and everywhere,

in those languages,

for illiterate people, as well, with video cameras,

as WIKI,

partly in collaboration with One Laptop per Child (OLPC).

Here is WUaS Languages' page:

- by copying, pasting and translating parts of the growing WUaS wiki school from English.

... would like to develop (nontheistically) Friendly organizational practices at World University & School to scale it large,

with a Google's engineering approach to organization around Information Technologies, and innovation

... perhaps a new subject for this consensus decision-making in the manner of Friends with information technology

... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects .

Quaker Meeting for Business has worked for 350 years,

and Google has around 24,000 employees and continues to innovate as an advertising company,

and via collaboration ...

which Google now collaborates, for example, with Samsung (Nexus S), Sony (Google TV) ...

On the pragmatic side of accreditation,

WUaS as an online, free university will be particularly well-positioned,

vis-a-vis MIT OCW,

to generate Computer Programmers,

in addition to Law (2016 1st matriculating class),

Medicine (2017 1st matriculating class)

and even

especially for the digital world.

How to help generate more FUN than MIT students already have with these?

Perhaps World Univ & Sch will provide the interactive, online, university, course resources for many of the students with disabilities at the 34-ish great universities listed here -

part way down here:

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses ...

See the free Harvard doctoral degree on this page, too:

In so many ways, WUaS -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/ -

seeks GREAT students with its upcoming degrees,

so, the most sophisticated symbol users -

those, for example, who at the high school & college levels ENJOYED

engaging the most intellectually challenging problems in all subjects

(e.g. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford + students)

on their own,

and with compatriots.

This includes, especially, disabled peoples of ALL stripes

(in wheelchairs, with sight and hearing disabilities, etc.)

who seek the fascinating knowledge challenges in MIT OCW, -

- while at the same time WUAS will remain Wikipedia-open & flourishing for creative,

people-to-people teaching & learning.

And remember, World University and School invites you to participate in building this - just send an email here:

and join this World University and School Google group:

Dugong calf: Modernity, consumerism, media, education, identity, etc., All influence our choices significantly, Grateful Dead, WUaS Learning to Jam?

Modernity, consumerism, so buying & selling, the media, education, identity, etc.,

all influence our choices significantly

and yet music and jamming

- like the Grateful Dead and rock & roll, for example, -

giving rise to a lot of bliss and happiness

for a lot of people.

How to generate kinds of bliss, happiness and even love, with focus and code?

(What kinds of hippy and loving codes, - love, yes, - and why this ongoing lack in society?)

Ah, "Loving ... :)

the 'loving' word

And, loving bliss eliciting ...

MMMmmmm ...

and with musical jamming?

Learn & teach jamming at the WUaS Music School,

which you can access via the 'Music' subject: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Music :) ...

'Musical Jamming' ... a new WUaS subject, I think,

distinct from the 'Improvisation' subject :)

... continuing to delight in the transformations of Harbin Hot Springs

on neurophysiology -

... simply going into & out of the pools in the sun -

anthropologically, especially -

is so beneficial ...

And at home in your bathtub in a virtual Harbin?

Here's a machinima about this:

"The Making of Virtual Harbin Hot Springs as Ethnographic Field Site in Second Life and Open Simulator.

(14 minutes).

... to come :)
