Ann, Ma/Janie, All,
Yoga greetings! How are you all? How is your hip healing Annie? How is your knee healing Alden? Might you even have begun to explore Yoga asana further on your won with the Web ... and possibly have questions? No word further yet about moving WUaS Academic Medical Center with Yoga Hall into a newly safe, vacant, with deed, 670 A Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516 ... so here's an invitation to you to continue your own Yoga with Asana class explorations possibly on Saturday at 7 am PT, 10am ET ...
Christine Michaels (also at Longwood senior center in Pittsburgh as is my mother) regarding the possible benefits of chair Yoga asana and to develop strength & fitness and to prevent falling, and in potentially or possibly living until we're 150 years of age+ even (with genetic drug therapies for this, for example, FDA approved ... by 2050?) ... is in her mid-80s and still something of a hippy 50 years after 1975 ... and am not sure about the wisdom of an online Yoga Asana course for her ... But I'm continuing to seek to develop this Yoga course on Saturdays at 7am PT ...
{Am newly joining an online Unitarian Universalist church of Palo Alto meditation group on Saturdays at 9am PT ... and may actually eventually explore doing Yoga asana in this (eg since doing so online might not bother people ... and give one the opportunity to do Yoga socially too in some ways) ... and may explore teaching an online Yoga class with some of these people as well in the future ...
(Am also exploring singing in the UUCPA choir on Thursdays, I think, and Sunday morning ... which I sang in actually from about 1/20/17 to 4/20/21).... and see PPS }
I added further Yogini Angela Farmer videos here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Yoga - but which are not yet conversationally interactive with conversational generative AI and ML and NLP and for online Yoga feedback and teaching potentially eg with her potential avatar agent teaching bot ... and here's this welcoming Angela Farmer teaching Yoga video again ...

Greetings, from the SF East Bay near Canyon 94516 (where I lived for about 13 years until moving into a safe house north of Berkeley, and then, I would say, fleeing for my life to the eastern seaboard where I was in asylum for about 5 1/2 years, returning to the SF East Bay this past December and January 2025). I sang in the UUCPA choir from around January 2017 - March 2021 (having just looked up some past emails in this google email address sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.orgaccount).
(As you may recall, my parents met and married in 1957 in the UU church of Cincinnati Ohio, and my grandfather Sandy Brown there I think could be considered a birthright Unitarian; my 90 year old mother is a member of the 1st UU Church of Pittsburgh too ... did some of you go to college at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the 1970s, did I read? )
I'm writing to inquire if I could possibly please join this Saturday's meditation group online out of the UUCPA. I noticed online on the UUCPA website - https://www.uucpa.org/ - that you send out a link for this beforehand. Am exploring the possibility of joining the choir again as well.
Thanks so much, best wishes, Yogically, Friendly regards,

Ma/Janie, Annie, Alden, Donna, Pin, All,
Yoga greetings. I heard back from the Hack for Social Impact 2025 hackathon on
Saturday, November 8 9:00 AM - Nov 9, 7:00 PM
that I can go, so no Yoga class at 7am PT that day (and I still haven't learned that I can move into a vacant 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516 by this Thursday either).
How to keep the Unitarian U friend of my mother at Longwood senior center too Christine Michaels alive for the long term (150+ years), and with Yoga poses even (and genetic drug therapies for this, when they emerge FDA approved)? My mother said Chris is falling a lot (and see text message to Ma, Pin and Ed below in PS) ... and how could modified standing Yoga poses help Chris from falling and gain strength back?
But if hypothetically Chris Michaels could attend this Yoga class on Saturdays at 10 am ET, given her weakness, I'd be wary as a Yoga teacher of teaching her modified standing Yoga poses online or remotely, for example, if she were to fall and I couldn't prevent this or help her with using specific props (Iyengar Yoga-wise).
This leads me to wonder, brainstorming, how to even develop humanoid robot Yoga teachers who could go into people's homes even and teach Yoga and be there physically to prevent falling and injuries too ... eg for living in a fit body to 150 years of age + potentially (since I don't think MDs or PTs or coaches etc could help Chris in Pgh at Longwood for example) ... and brainstorming see also the beginning images here of prospective Yoga student humanoid robots for machine learning Yoga teaching and learning purposes too -

So it's possible that Yoga standing poses and other Yoga asana and Yoga could help Chris Michaels live to 150 +, with longevity genetic drug therapies too as they emerge, but maybe not with an online Yoga class for Chris ...
Am exploring further teaching a first online Yoga class on Saturday 11/15/25 at 7am PT and 10am PT ... and if I and WUaS have moved into a newly safe vacant 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516.
Ma, do you want to ask Chris if doing Yoga poses could be of help to her? (I don't know of any Yoga teachers in Pittsburgh however who could help her in her place with these however). Search for online Yoga videos for Chris for chair Yoga initially?
Ma, Pin and Ed, re Yoga & 'UU' Christine Michaels, from England originally, who is falling a lot, at Longwood, and knowing her a bit too, ... I hypothesized further after we talked on the way back from the swimmers' shower today ... That modified standing Yoga poses, since she uses a walker, daily even with brahmacharya as ' self-restraint, especially with regard to sex' would be of help to her, but I'm not sure how to effect this or get her to do this, eg re her 'consciousness' or thinking even (eg as a Yoga teacher) Thoughts? Here's one expression of 8 limb yoga, and re poses and brahmacharya too -
8 limbs of yoga
The eight limbs of yoga, known as Ashtanga Yoga, are a comprehensive framework for yogic practice outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These limbs provide a structured path to self-realization and union with the Divine. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]
Yama (Restraints): Ethical principles governing one's interactions with others, including non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), continence (brahmacharya), and non-attachment (aparigraha). [11, 12]
Niyama (Observances): Ethical principles governing one's inner world, including purity (saucha), contentment (santosha), austerity (tapa), study (svadhyaya), and surrender to God (ishvarapranidhana). [13, 14, 15]
Asana (Postures): Physical postures designed to strengthen and align the body, promoting flexibility, balance, and awareness. [16, 17, 18]
Pranayama (Breath Control): Techniques for regulating the breath, which can cultivate inner calm, focus, and energy. [19, 20, 21]
Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses): Turning inward from external stimuli and focusing on one's own mind. [22, 23]
Dharana (Concentration): Sustaining attention on a single point, such as a mantra, breath, or image. [1, 24, 25]
Dhyana (Meditation): A state of deep absorption and contemplation, where the mind transcends thoughts and limitations. [26, 27, 28]
Samadhi (Union with the Divine): The ultimate goal of yoga, a state of blissful oneness with the universe, where ego dissolves and the individual realizes their true nature. [29, 30, 31]

greetings! There are 2 early FDA-approved genetic drug therapies to help people with movement interestingly and see the PS and maybe something from these discoveries will help with for example muscle wasting reversal and even for or with Yoga asana in the future!
Restorative Yoga class possibly this Saturday at 7am PT if I can livestream it from Canyon 94516 (Yoga in a video call creates interesting challenges re releasing and inner body explorations for a kind of 'prana breath' inner releasing explorations in the inner body too ... and I like to explore this when teaching with people on their backs for further releasing ... which may not be entirely easy for some of you to lie down on the floor, eg after hip replacement surgery .... but we'll see depending who comes to this, or if I've moved in to a newly safe Canyon 94516 before this Saturday ... Thoughts? Nice to get your text message yesterday, Annie ... first time in a long time, and thanks!)?
And further can any genetic drug therapies help such people at this point with physical movement questions? (Does anyone know of any others ? more than just statistically proven too?)
Yes, some FDA-approved genetic drug therapies can improve physical movement, primarily by treating underlying genetic conditions that cause muscle weakness or impaired physical function.
For example, a gene therapy is approved for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) to improve motor function, and a drug is approved for Barth syndrome to improve muscle strength, which can affect abilities like walking, running, and physical activity. Currently, there are no FDA-approved genetic drug therapies specifically for Down syndrome or autism for the purpose of enhancing physical movement, although research in this area is ongoing
PS a gene therapy is approved for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) to improve motor function +7Yes, a gene therapy called ELEVIDYS (delandistrogene moxeparvovec-rokl) has been approved by the FDA for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) to improve motor function. Initially granted accelerated approval in 2023 for ambulatory patients ages 4–5, the therapy was later granted full approval for ambulatory patients and accelerated approval for non-ambulatory patients. It works by delivering a micro-gene to muscle cells to produce a shortened version of the dystrophin protein, which helps stabilize muscle cells. How it worksAAV vector: The therapy uses a harmless adeno-associated virus (AAVrh74) to deliver the therapeutic DNA into muscle cells. Micro-dystrophin: The delivered micro-gene produces a shortened version of the dystrophin protein, called micro-dystrophin. Muscle stabilization: This micro-dystrophin helps stabilize muscle cell membranes, which can improve motor function and potentially lead to a milder form of the disease

Alden, all, I found this interesting regarding how ACL tears heal with much relevance for Yoga asana too (and I had a ligament I think pull or tear on my right shoulder's front 'pinion' for years, preventing me from doing a twist in half lotus pose and by reaching around behind my back and taking my foot on the other side, but it healed ... and now I can do this Yoga asana again with many benefits) ... AND how is your ACL issue doing these days? Are you aware of it on a daily basis for example? -
ACL anterior cruciate ligament tear and Yoga asana
How do ligaments heal or regenerate ?
Ligaments heal in three phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. First, an injury triggers inflammation to clear damaged cells. Next, the body lays down new, but initially disorganized, collagen fibers (scar tissue) to rebuild the ligament. Finally, during the remodeling phase, the collagen is gradually reorganized and strengthened over several months to years, though the healed ligament may remain weaker than the original tissue.
Healing phases
Inflammation: The initial phase, lasting up to a week, where immune cells rush to the injury site, causing pain, swelling, and redness as they clean up damaged cells.
Proliferation: New blood vessels form, and fibroblasts begin to lay down new collagen to create a disorganized scar tissue matrix. This provides initial stability but is not as strong as the original ligament.
Remodeling: This is the longest phase, lasting for months to years. The scar tissue's collagen fibers are gradually rearranged, realigned, and cross-linked to improve strength and function. However, some differences in the composition, architecture, and function compared to the original ligament may persist.
Factors influencing healing
Blood supply: Ligaments have a poor blood supply, which contributes to their slow healing time.
Rehabilitation: Moving the injured joint and performing regular, progressive loading exercises during the rehabilitation process are crucial to support healing and regain function.
Lifestyle: Factors like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can slow down the healing process.
Nutrition: Proper nutrition and hydration support the body's ability to repair the tissue.
Challenges and future directions
Tissue engineering: Researchers are investigating ways to improve ligament regeneration through methods like tissue engineering, using scaffolds, growth factors, and stem cells to help mimic the structure and strength of the native tissue.
Current treatments: While tissue engineering is promising, common treatments for ligament injuries today include conservative approaches like rest and physical therapy, or surgical repair in more severe cases

Alden, might you want to see if you can attend this Stanford Pediatric knee injuries webinar tomorrow at 9am PT - https://mailchi.mp/stanford/4uowq7psk6-4884917?e=2f0a90453f? How is your knee doing? (Have you been in pain due to your knee injury for 50 or 60 years now or longer?) With the Yoga bridge pose picture in the Stanford Medicine announcement, I explored further Yoga poses for knee injuries re bridge pose, and found the poses in the PS
Annie, you mentioned when we talked that your MD surgeon I think suggested doing and giving you exercises on paper including doing squats and lifting your toes too - a modified Utkatasana or chair pose is an interesting way to explore squats, and lifting your toes in gentle standing poses like Tadasana (Mountain Pose) or Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Hands Pose from mountain pose) have ancillary benefits too.
Donna, how might you explore Yoga and re gastroenterology if at all (and even regarding possibly eating a ovo-lacto vegetarian diet of 10 -15 servings of fruits, vegetable, grains and legumes per day, for example? ) How to explore Yoga genetics for gastroenterological conditions in the future I wonder, and in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics too?
Exploring Yoga asana is a way in to further exploring 8 limb Yoga and its benefits for health, well being and family health even (eg cause and effect-wise), with which this is a riff in some ways - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html.
A safe yoga sequence for knee injuries includes gentle poses like Mountain Pose (
), Child's Pose (
), and Cat-Cow, which build alignment and release tension. It is crucial to focus on strengthening and stabilizing the knee with exercises like leg lifts and ankle circles, and to use props like blankets for cushioning in poses such as Low Lunge. Avoid painful or intense kneeling poses and always move slowly, stopping or modifying any pose that causes pain.
): A resting pose that helps release tension in the knees and back. Kneel on your mat and lower your torso toward the ground, resting your arms by your sides or in front of you.
): Lie on your back, bend your knees, and press your feet into the floor. Squeeze your thighs together as you lift your hips to build strength and stability.
Strengthening and stabilizing exercises
Ankle Circles: While seated with one leg extended, sit up and place your hands back for support. Circle your ankles to contract the calf muscles, then press your foot into the ground and pull your toes back, holding each for 10 seconds before switching.
Leg Lifts: Lie on your back with legs extended and core engaged. Lift one straight leg off the floor and then lower it back down, repeating on both sides.
Kneecap Tensing: Lie on your stomach and place a towel or blanket under your knee. Tense your thigh to press the towel into the floor, and repeat on both sides.
Warrior III Variation: A modified version of Warrior III with a bent supporting leg, which you can then bend and straighten to build stability.
Stretches and modifications
Low Lunge: Place a blanket under the knee that is supporting weight to provide cushioning.
Half Happy Baby Pose: Lie on your back and pull one knee toward your belly. Hold the back of your thigh, shin, or ankle to bring the knee to a
): This pose can help strengthen quadriceps, but be mindful of any pressure on the knees. Ensure your knees are slightly bent to protect them.
Important considerations
Listen to your body: If a pose causes pain, skip it or find a modification.
Use props: Always have a blanket, towel, or block handy to cushion your knees in poses where they bear weight.
Move slowly: Focus on slow and controlled movements with longer holds to ensure proper form and avoid injury
PPS
Yoga poses after hip replacement surgery
After a hip replacement, you should avoid poses involving deep hip flexion, extreme rotation (turning the hip inward or outward), and unilateral weight-bearing, such as Pigeon Pose, Lotus Pose, deep Forward Folds, and Warrior III. Instead, focus on gentle, stable poses that promote alignment and balance, including Mountain Pose, modified Tree Pose using a prop, and Bridge Pose, always consulting your surgeon and a qualified instructor before starting.
Poses to Avoid
Deep Hip Flexion/Extension:
Poses like deep forward folds, low lunges, and intense forward bends should be avoided as they can compress the hip joint.
Extreme Rotation:
Avoid poses that force deep internal (turning the leg inward) or external (turning the leg outward) rotation, as this can stress the hip, such as Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) and Lotus Pose (Padmasana).
Unilateral Weight-Bearing:
Poses like Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III), which place significant weight on one leg, can strain compensatory muscles and should be approached with extreme caution or avoided entirely.
Twisting Poses Under Load:
Revolved Triangle (Parivrtta Trikonasana) and similar twisting poses can put shearing forces on the hip joint.
A simple extension of Mountain Pose, this can provide a full-body stretch and promote spinal lengthening.
Important Precautions
Consult Your Doctor: Always get clearance from your surgeon before starting any new exercise program, including yoga.
Use Props: Support your balance with chairs, walls, or blocks.
Listen to Your Body: Avoid any movements or poses that cause discomfort, pain, or instability.
Focus on Gentle Movement: Gradually introduce poses and avoid holding them for prolonged periods, especially if they are modified.
Seek Qualified Instruction: Work with an instructor who is knowledgeable about hip replacement recovery to ensure proper form and modifications
PPPS
Yoga poses for 90 year old woman
Gentle yoga poses for a 90-year-old woman include seated poses like the Seated Spinal Twist and Cat-Cow, standing poses that use a chair for support such as Mountain Pose with hand on chair, and floor poses like Child's Pose and Savasana. These are all modified to be safer and more accessible by using props and focusing on gentle, supportive movements. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Seated poses
Seated Spinal Twist: Sit tall in a chair with feet flat on the floor. Place one hand on the opposite knee and the other on the back of the chair. Gently twist your torso to look over your shoulder, keeping your hips stable.
Cat-Cow (on a chair): Sit tall with hands on knees. Inhale while arching your back and lifting your chest, then exhale as you round your spine and tuck your chin.
Chair Forward Bend: Sit in a chair, place your hands on your knees, and lean forward from the hips, letting your back and neck relax. This is a good alternative for those with knee or ankle sensitivity.
Neck and Shoulder Rolls: Sit tall and gently roll your neck from side to side and your shoulders forward and back to release tension. [2, 3, 5, 6, 7]
Standing poses (with chair support)
Mountain Pose: Stand tall, holding the back of a chair for balance. Distribute weight evenly through your feet, engage your leg muscles, and lengthen your spine.
Upward Salute Side Bend: Stand in Mountain Pose and inhale while reaching one arm overhead. Exhale to gently bend to the opposite side, holding onto the chair for support. [2, 3, 8, 9, 10]
Floor poses (with props)
Child's Pose: Kneel on the floor with a bolster or folded blankets between your hips and heels. Rest your torso on your thighs and extend your arms forward or back.
Savasana (Corpse Pose): Lie on your back, ideally with your legs supported by a bolster. Close your eyes and allow your body to completely relax.
Supine Spinal Twist: Lie on your back, bend your knees, and let them fall to one side while keeping your shoulders on the floor. You can place a blanket or block under your knees for support. [1, 2, 4, 11, 12]
Important considerations
Use props: Always use props like a chair, blankets, or blocks for stability and comfort.

"8 limb Yoga and its benefits for health, well being and family health even (eg cause and effect-wise)" ... and am not sure what I think of this yet, but for the possibly 150 years ahead of us with extreme longevity genetic drug therapies emerging, seems like it might have some merit -
AI Overview
The Eight Limbs of Yoga (Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) provide a holistic path to health, well-being, and family health by integrating physical postures with ethical conduct, self-discipline, and mental concentration. Individually, they promote physical strength and balance, while collectively they build mental clarity, emotional resilience, and inner peace by fostering self-awareness and a deeper connection to oneself and others. For families, this translates to a shared practice that can cultivate compassion, ethical behavior, and a more harmonious home environment.
