Rhododendron vaseyi (pinkshell azalea): Invitation to participate in Candid’s 2026 Nonprofit Voices Survey ~ stephanie.wormington@candid.org * Here's the World University and School's beginning World University and School Foundation page - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation. How best to focus non-profit fundraising further? World University and School also doesn't have a Board of Directors to speak of either. World University and School is also planning to seek reimbursement from departments of education in all 50 US states, and as WUaS accredits and in all 200 countries (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - each to become a world class major online research and teaching WUaS university, and with WUaS Wiki Schools for free open wiki-teaching and wiki-learning for speakers of all 7,159 living languages, from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - in each of those languages) * * Dear Stephanie, (Pin/Sid, Ma/Janie, Ed, Erinn, Konrad), Thanks for seeking to answer my nonprofit World University and School questions in the next few days. A In this once in a blue moon World University and School opportunity to create highest quality, people to people, free universal education and in seeking to code for speakers of all 7159 known living languages, and from there for all 7.9 billion people on the planet ...

Dear Stephanie,

Greetings. Thanks for this Candid survey opportunity further. And Reed greetings: did you hear much about Les Squier, a favorite psychology professor of mine at Reed, when I studied there from 1979-1985? Who were some of your favorite professors at Reed? And do you know Erinn Andrews - https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinn-andrews formerly at Guidestar I think before it became Candid, and now at Stanford?

More about free World University and School building on CC-4 licensed MIT OpenCourseWare in 7 languages below and in the survey, and now with this new Candid URL for WUaS https://app.candid.org/profile/9121509/world-university-and-school-27-3105368; and here is a recent WUaS Weekly Business Meeting / WUaS open Q&A (loosely conducted in the manner of unprogrammed Friends / Quakers) - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2026/04/kashmir-himalaya-m-41326-42026-open.html. WUaS is also in a still somewhat unstructured #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program, and WUaS is also not yet accredited, but has the green light from Middle States Commission on Higher Education with offices in the greater Philadelphia area, and is reaching out to the US federal government (Professor Matsudaira) in exploring how best to Deploy the Full US Federal Toolkit as we grow (and see the PPPS both about this, and regarding #TwitterX and #LinkedIN #hashtags as an idea generator, and about the WUaS Corporation, our 2nd WUaS wing).

WUaS has 2 wings with amazing potential synergies between them in 200 countries and in 7159 living languages, but building them out is taking years, and World Univ & Sch's Statement of Information with the State of California for the CA tax-exempt World Univ & Sch legal entity just went through, complementing our 501 c 3 filings, so I completed the Candid survey.

As president, CEO, founder, professor at, and presiding clerk and recording clerk at World Univ & Sch, I've taken some Candid online webinars in the past, but haven't found them that helpful or focusing or germane, and World University and School fundraising is not my forte. WUaS hasn't hired anyone yet to speak of whatsoever, but WUaS would first seek to engage a fundraiser for further growing WUaS, but there may be a chicken and egg problem here too.

Looking forward to further communication with you and Candid about this.

May I invite you to a still-forming Reedie + Book Group potentially meeting in Canyon 94516 near Berkeley and online with time ...?

All the best, Reed regards, thank you,
Scott

my notes

And thanks for these which I reposted -

PPS
And here are my responses in writing from the Candid survey -

Free-to-students' World University and School, building on CC-4 licensed MIT OCW in 7 languages for free online WUaS degrees from home, hopes all of them will, but hasn't become financially operational to speak of whatsoever and since becoming a 501 c 3 in 2010.

World University and School and the WUaS Academic Press / WUaS Corporation, both planned in 7159 known living languages, are both 1) http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - a 501 c 3 US federal non-profit  legal entity, with an affiliated tax-exempt state of CA legal entity, since 2010, and 2) http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - a for-profit general stock company legal entity in the state of CA, since 2017 - and with amazing potential synergies between them (with all 3 tax ID 3s at the bottom of these beginning web WUaS pages). Both WUaS wings planned in 200 countries and 7, 159 known living languages, and in seeking to code for all 7.9 billion people on the planet, and to facilitate highest quality, MIT OCW-centric online free universal education and potentially to end poverty too, and with partnering emails with Stanford Mine Pi cryptocurrency free money daily - https://minepi.com/sgkmac ...

... (via some Reed contacts, Swaroop Poudel now in London, and, I think, attorney and Reed Board member Konrad Alt; might you know Swaroop since you both graduated from Reed in 2010 I think?).

World University and School has no experience and no track record thus far with fundraising.

Here's the World University and School's beginning World University and School Foundation page - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation. How best to focus non-profit fundraising further? World University and School also doesn't have a Board of Directors to speak of either. World University and School is also planning to seek reimbursement from departments of education in all 50 US states, and as WUaS accredits and in all 200 countries (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - each to become a world class major online research and teaching WUaS university, and with WUaS Wiki Schools for free open wiki-teaching and wiki-learning for speakers of all 7,159 living languages, from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - in each of those languages) per student per year (along the lines of what it costs to study at MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge / Reed College and similar) ... and eventually potentially in Pi cryptocurrency from US states and all 200 countries.

Dear Scott,

In Fall 2024, you participated in a survey from Candid and ABFE to understand how nonprofits were navigating the funding landscape while supporting their missions, leaders, and communities. Philanthropy has experienced significant changes over the past year, and Candid is conducting a follow-up study to understand how those changes have affected nonprofits. We need your help to learn more about your organization’s current circumstances and how funders can better meet nonprofits’ needs.

We are inviting you to share your perspective in a brief survey. The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and will remain open until Thursday, May 21st. You have unique insight into your organization’s experience; by participating, you can help ensure that findings represent the full range of nonprofits’ perspectives across the sector.

As a thank you for your participation, we will send you:

  • A curated list of Candid resources (including complimentary trainings, training videos, and on demand courses) related to effective fundraising strategies
  • Summary of aggregated survey results after all responses have been analyzed
  • Links to reports resulting from this research

Click the "begin survey" button below to share your thoughts.

Thank you for your consideration. With your help, we hope to inform the field about nonprofits’ experience and how funders can best support them.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Wormington

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your email and for sharing your thoughts in our survey. It's always wonderful to meet a fellow Reedie! I was at Reed from 2006-2010 and definitely heard of Les Squier! The Psychology department was always great at honoring professors of the past in their lectures, and I spent far too much time in the psych department (I worked there for a year after graduating conducting research with three professors, including one on sabbatical). I'd love to hear more about your book club.

Unfortunately, I'm newer to Candid and didn't get a chance to meet Erinn Andrews. Many of my team members have been here 15+ years, though, so I'll be sure to ask around and check the LinkedIn link you shared.

I'm sorry to hear that the online webinars weren't useful as you might have hoped. I know we included these links in the follow-up list of complimentary resources after the survey, but I'm really enthusiastic about the resources at Candid Labs that our data science colleagues have created (since they are in development, our colleagues are very open to feedback on what is and isn't helpful). My colleague at Candid also recently shared two blogs on the ultimate cheat sheet for grant proposal documents (part 1 and part 2) that may be useful, and there's a checklist on Candid's LinkedIn. My team also published key fact sheets (and a blog) on smaller nonprofits (those with $50,000 or less in annual expenses) that I'd be happy to share, if you're interested. The story you shared about World University and School is very similar to what we heard from nonprofit leaders we interviewed in our prior stage of this research initiative and one that I'm personally very invested in learning more about. I really appreciate being able to learn more about your experience and look forward to sharing back aggregated results/reports encompassing your and other nonprofits' perspectives. Disaggregating findings by organization size, staff number, subsector, age (ruling year), region, and more is something we're committed to doing, so we can better understand how experiences might differ across the sector.

Thank you again for completing the Nonprofit Voices survey, sharing your story, and highlighting our Reed connection! I look forward to hearing more about the book club (I'm located in Virginia, so likely could not meet in person in Berkeley) and reading up on WUaS' journey that you shared. If there are any questions I can answer for you or information I can provide, please let me know.

Thank you,

Stephanie

Dear Stephanie, All,

Thanks for your helpful and prompt Candid email response. The "Proposed Reedie+ book group beginning in late December 2024 or early 2025?" email thread is growing, and interesting, and is the current extent of this book group, as I and the WUaS Academic Medical Center seek further to move forward fully into a newly safe vacant with property deed 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516 (where I lived for about 13 years before calling the police, and then moving to a safe house north of Berkeley for about 2.5 years, then fled for my life to the eastern seaboard for another 2.5 years, living in 2 asylum houses, and then headed west to the Bay Area again first on December 10, 2024 and with my friend Ed Smyth MD in Berkeley, affiliated with KP NorCal, and John Sargent MD at Tufts' Medical Center in Boston having begun precipitating my moving into 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516 beginning in March 2022.

The first gathering of this   "Proposed Reedie+ book group ..." will likely take place after I move forward again into 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon 94516 (having been underway, van-camping much in a great 2025 Toyota Sienna Woodland minivan since then and March 4, 2025 and in the SF East Bay hills). More about some of this in the Proposed Reedie + book group email thread ... But the idea is to suggest a book for reading in any given month in a year, I've learned from my mother's book group that we're asking people to have read the book before suggesting it. Third Saturday of the month around 4pm Pacific Time, 7pm Eastern Time, and from a physical get together initially out of Canyon 94516 is something we're exploring ... and it could be GREAT to start this online ... How about exploring the possibility of a first "Proposed Reedie + book group online on Saturday May 16, 2026? Would you like to suggest a title to read ? One of the titles I think resonated with Reedies+ is the great novel "Klara and The Sun" 2021 by Kazuo Ishiguro (Nobel laureate) and about humanoid robotics and 'genetic engineering ("lifted") for enhanced academic ability' - as an example, and both themes of which World University and School seeks to research and develop further (aging reversal and extreme longevity genetic drug therapies, re the latter, and with what Harvard & MIT professor George Church is heralding); perhaps we can explore reading this for Sat 5/16/26. What book titles might you suggest, Stephanie? (I'm appreciative of inspiring and great or even incredible books in some of these regards:).

Not all that familiar with what Candid (formerly Guidestar) can do - as it's gone through its IT and platform iterations in recent years - and regarding your mentioning Candid's Data focus in your helpful email, I just asked Gemini AI :

How can I at 501 c 3 world university and school best develop with candid (guidestar) as wuas seeks to 'deploy the full us federal toolkit' as wuas accredits, and in communication with professor matsudaira at American University inaugural Chief Economist at U.S. Department of Education and Chief Economist of the Council of Economic Advisers?

( and see the PS )

And having just filed the Statement of Information with the state of California for the tax-exempt World University and School wing (as you may have read), I think I'm next seeking to add the documents to the World University and School PayPal link at bottom here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - which hasn't worked in some years; please stay tuned.

Also, how best to build out our WUaS platforms further in all of these potential fundraising ways and with AI and ML and with non-profit World Univ & Sch being in a #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program?

Brainstorming question, if you could become what Erinn Andrews is at Stanford University now, at World University and School in some years, and hire as many fundraisers as you might like, how would you focus World University and School's initial fundraising and our development process, planning-wise?

Asked Gemini -

how can I at 501 c 3 world university and school best develop with candid (guidestar) as wuas seeks to 'deploy the full us federal toolkit' as wuas accredits, and in communication with professor matsudaira at American University inaugural Chief Economist at U.S. Department of Education and Chief Economist of the Council of Economic Advisers?

To align World University and School (WUaS) with the "full US federal toolkit" while engaging with Professor Jordan Matsudaira—a key architect of federal higher education accountability—you should focus on data transparency and economic outcome metrics.

Since Professor Matsudaira’s work (particularly the College Scorecard) emphasizes using administrative data to measure the causal impact of education on low-income students, WUaS can best develop by utilizing Candid (GuideStar) as a public-facing "data warehouse" that mirrors these federal standards.

1. Leverage Candid to Mirror Federal Accountability

Professor Matsudaira’s tenure as Chief Economist was defined by accountability frameworks and data disaggregation. You can use Candid to demonstrate that WUaS is ready for federal integration by doing the following:

  • Earn the Platinum Seal of Transparency: This is the highest level on Candid. Beyond basic financials, it requires shared metrics. Align your metrics with the Department of Education’s "Gainful Employment" and "Financial Value Transparency" standards.

  • Data Disaggregation: Use the Candid "Demographics Section" to report on the diverse populations WUaS seeks to serve. Professor Matsudaira has specifically focused on how policy impacts low-income Americans; showing your reach into these demographics via Candid builds a pre-verified record for federal reviewers.

  • API Integration for Grants: Use Candid’s Premier API to ensure your 501(c)(3) data is instantly "pullable" by federal grant-making systems. This reduces the administrative burden on both WUaS and federal agencies like the Dept. of Ed.

2. Communicating with Professor Matsudaira

Given his role in creating the PEER Center at American University and his history with the Council of Economic Advisers, your communication should focus on Evidence-Based Policy and Economic Mobility.

  • Focus on the "College Scorecard" Logic: Professor Matsudaira led the team that developed the College Scorecard. Frame the WUaS mission around transparency in student outcomes—specifically how an MIT OCW-based curriculum in 7,000 languages provides a measurable "economic return" for students in the most underserved regions.

  • The "Full Federal Toolkit" Argument: Position WUaS as a laboratory for the policies he helped design (e.g., loan repayment innovation or student debt relief alternatives). Since WUaS seeks to scale into 200 countries, highlight the macroeconomic impact of a universal education model.

3. Deploying the "Federal Toolkit" through Candid

Candid acts as a bridge to several components of the federal toolkit:

Federal ComponentCandid Implementation Strategy
Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200)Upload your audited financial statements directly to Candid. This satisfies "pre-award" risk assessments performed by federal agencies.
System for Award Management (SAM.gov)Ensure your Candid profile matches your SAM.gov registration exactly. Federal officers often use GuideStar to cross-reference an entity’s "responsibility" and history.
Title IV EligibilityWhile accreditation is a separate process, having a "Platinum-level" public record of your board, staff, and financial health supports your application for federal student aid eligibility.

Suggested Next Steps for WUaS

  1. Map WUaS Goals to the PEER Center: Research the current initiatives at the PEER Research Center (co-directed by Matsudaira). Identify where "Virtual Earth" or your robotics kits (Lego Spike Prime) could provide data for a study on "educational intervention design."

  2. Standardize Financial Reporting: Use the Candid/GuideStar Common Profile to ensure your financial data is formatted in a way that matches the "Gainful Employment" reporting requirements he helped establish.

  3. Propose a Data-Sharing Partnership: When reaching out, frame the request not just as a search for accreditation, but as an opportunity for the Department of Education (via his academic lens) to observe a "Global University" model that scales with near-zero marginal cost.

Dear Stephanie, (Pin/Sid, Ma/Janie, Ed, Erinn, Konrad),

Thanks for your further prompt email yesterday evening - and for seeking to answer my nonprofit World University and School questions in the next few days.

A
In this once in a blue moon World University and School opportunity to create highest quality, people to people, free universal education and in seeking to code for speakers of all 7159 known living languages, and from there for all 7.9 billion people on the planet, ... and potentially to end poverty by distributing Pi cryptocurrency free money daily to many or most of all 7.9 billion people with free education, thus possibly creating a main single cryptocurrency worldwide, I'd like to further develop a WUaS Development Committee (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation) - and invite everyone above to be on it - and loosely in the manner of unprogrammed Quakers/Friends and their / our committee process in Quaker Monthly Business Meeting. How to develop a WUaS Development plan, having become a 501 c 3 first in 2010, with the IRS ruling year of 2014 ?

A 1
Or might I invite everyone above to become Board members of World University and School as a non-profit ? WUaS has been lacking a real Board of Directors / Trustees for decades, see - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation.

B
I searched on 'what can candid/guidestar do for a nonprofit?' and found -

Candid's GuideStar helps nonprofits increase visibility, build trust, and find funding by allowing them to update their free profile and earn Seals of Transparency.

B 1
And I wonder in our communication whether Candid / Guidestar, with its affiliation with the IRS of the US federal government, could help World Univ & Sch obtain a first substantial US federal grant early on - and re Professor Matsudaira too somehow.

Having finally just filed the state of California Tax-exempt nonprofit World Univ & Sch Statement of Information, Ed Smyth MD, above is the named Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer presently (and see the attached '2026 4 15 STATE OF CALIFORNIA Office of the Secretary of State STATEMENT OF INFORMATION CA NONPROFIT CORPORATION filed ) on the NONPROFIT World Univ & Sch wing, it's possible Vivek Hutheesing (with a Columbia University MBA, and Cornell University BA in Finance) will become CEO of the WUaS Corporation, the FOR-PROFIT second wing of WUaS. WUaS has been keeping this 2 wings very separate since WUaS's second wing became a for-profit general stock company legal entity in the state of California in 2017 ... but could Vivek Hutheesing also serve as the CFO/treasurer of the nonprofit World University and School in the future?

D
Also, I got an email from someone in Canada yesterday regarding World University & School's PayPal link for Donations here, and I replied -

"World University and School isn't using PayPal for donations, partly due to not seeming to have the documentation PayPal wants, and partly due to the expenses; the link doesn't work @ - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ -  and will remove it, and since no one has been seeking for years to make donations via PayPal either.

Will pass. Thanks for your interest in free-to-students' World Univ & Sch building on CC-4 licensed MIT OCW in 7 languages - https://opencw.aprende.org/courses/translated-courses/ - where WUaS will seek reimbursement from all 200 countries departments of education after WUaS accredits..

Thanks,
Scott

D 1

I think this new World Univeristy and School Candid link - https://app.candid.org/profile/9121509/world-university-and-school-27-3105368 - may or could be the new US federal documentation that WUaS is a 501 c 3 (that might work with PayPal soon or in the future), and I'm not sure where the 2014 IRS World Univ & Sch 501 c 3 documentation is, and I also don't think the PayPal fees are worth it, given that so so few people have donated to WUaS via PayPal over the years; thoughts, questions, suggestions?

Thanks so much for your emails and prompt Candid replies, Stephanie, and looking forward to World University and School's first grant potentially ... possibly in WUaS seeking to "Deploy the Full US Federal Toolkit" (and search on deploy the full federal toolkit - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2026/03/karakoram-mountains-kashmir-m-33026.html & https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2026/03/karakoram-mountains-kashmir.html) and regarding Candid's relationship with the IRS and the US federal government.

Reed regards, thanks, all the best, World University and School WUaS Friendly greetings, Yogically,
Scott
