Greetings from MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, planning accrediting online major universities in Turkey and in all 200 countries, and in their main languages for free-to-students' Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD, IB high school/similar, AA, and Master's degrees. Thanks to PubPub for sharing this article about Off-University. How might we best communicate further?



For the students, however, the problem then arises of the recognition of their certificates and diplomas. The off-university is not recognized as a real university. How can she solve this problem?

Historian Julia Strutz has been doing research in Istanbul for ten years. The political situation persuaded her to return to Germany.

We are trying to solve this in two ways: Contacts between students and professors are still very good. We can build on that and make offers where the certificates are not the most important thing.

But we also want to tap into the whole world of Open Online Courses. These are seminars that real universities offer online and which they can then also certify. So we want to collaborate with professors who teach at real universities and put them in partnership with teachers in Turkey - or even with those who live in exile elsewhere. Then they could offer joint courses for students.

Off-University creates new strategies to uphold and sustain academic life and knowledge threatened by anti-democratic and authoritarian regimes. It was established for and by academics from Turkey yet addresses itself to academics all over the world: scholars who have been purged from their institutions, forced to resign, who are legally and politically persecuted and even imprisoned because of their opinion and research. 

Located in Germany, Off-University offers researchers and students with limited opportunity to move around freely an occasion to participate in online education. It combines the good old ideal of academic freedom with state of the art digital communication and collaboration opportunities and seeks to develop emancipatory education-research activities that are less hierarchical and more democratic. 


 EMANCIPATION THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP 
In this interview: we chat with Off University's Julia Strutz and Eren Paydas about the backdrop that necessitated their community and how they've created a support system for displaced academics.

Julia + Eren:  Displaced academics are either dismissed from their jobs by their university administrations, or forced into self-censorship by the same administration, or even worse, their governments. They are unable to go on teaching or conducting their research in a meaningful context. Helping them does not only mean to provide them with means of subsistence (which they almost surely need), but also to provide them with resources to continue with their research, and give them the opportunity to go on teaching.

 SAFE SCHOLARLY SPACES 
There are a lot of things that we found interesting about Off University’s mission and process. In this follow-up interview, we hear from a scholar they work with and learned a little bit more about how they’re maintaining privacy.

Julia: Scholars in our network are often actively excluded from publishing and their articles are taken out from collections or never accepted in their home countries. There are also the “silent” mechanisms of exclusion: To publish without an academic institution as an employer is very costly to begin with because these researchers cannot access the university’s credibility.

What does David Chalmers think about consciousness?


David Chalmers is a prominent philosopher of mind who is best known for his work on the problem of consciousness. He is a leading proponent of the view that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of reality that cannot be reduced to or explained by physical processes.
