Hi Nita,

Congratulations on giving your Pitt Philosophy talk today: "Replacing STEM with Natural Philosophy: Reconfiguring the Science/Philosophy Relationship" - https://www.centerphilsci.pitt.edu/event/ltt-d-dasgupta/.

I couldn't find your talk live here at noon on Pitt Ctr for Phil of Sci Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrRp47ZMXD7NXO3a9Gyh2sg - and didn't find it just now, posted after yet, when I looked.

If I find the URL in the next few days, I'll send it to you. And it would be great to see you before you return to the University of Texas in April.

I'm not sure what further Pitt Philosophy talks I'll go to if any before you go - any recommendations? - but perhaps we could meet for a chai tea or similar and a chat before you leave.

Best wishes, Scott

Title:  Replacing STEM with Natural Philosophy: Reconfiguring the Science/Philosophy Relationship

Abstract:

The idea of this project is to seek to replace the current notions of STEM with the classical ideal of natural philosophy and to see if a contemporary form of natural philosophy could be evolved in our present-day teaching and research contexts. The broad idea here is to cultivate an interface that is neither just STEM nor just Humanities but something in between. I claim that STEM is more a function of our current need for big capital in scientific research and the urgency to create a professional workforce rather than science per se in the sense of curiosity and understanding. STEM thus thrives on its separation from other houses of thought but produces in the end only short-term projects focused on expertise. Such projects need to be supplemented by wisdom-based projects.

This replacement ideal is next articulated under three different heads – first, by creating some teaching modules that follow a hybrid pattern, spreading between the arts and the sciences. I try this approach in Chemistry, which is currently taught mainly via physics. Instead, I think Chemistry should be seen as an interface to understand all change and transformation phenomena in nature, thus appealing to our practical as well as to our aesthetic instincts. It also links Chemistry with its origins in many craft traditions and with many traditional bodies of knowledge. The second is to see if ethical and responsible conduct in research (ERCR) courses could be taught by using projects of creative imagination. The third, and the most difficult part, is to try to build alliances with various traditional bodies of knowledge, which might hold different ontologies but perhaps could co-operate in the contexts of creating sustainable ways of life. I end by giving some examples of such sustainability from the work of S.... W......., an Indian engineer and innovator, currently active in Ladakh, India.

This talk will also be available live streamed on You Tube ...

My talk is up now. Here's the link. If you have any comments and questions, I will be very happy to answer them.

Next week's talks all look good to me. I am going to be there for all of them, certainly. And meeting for chai or coffee would be most welcome. I am always there Tuesday/Wednesday and Friday. Let me know.

Deepanwita,

Thank you. From the talk's description, I found - https://www.linkedin.com/in/wangchuksworld - and will find out how you engage his thinking after I view your talk.

Would you like to participate in mit OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch's open hour-long Monthly Business Meeting tomorrow at noon Eastern Time in Zoom? URL is here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2023/03/ardea-cinerea-grey-heron.html?m=0.

Thanks again, Scott

Replace STEM -

with philosphy -

Hi, Deepanwita,

Appreciating the beginning of your 3/17/23 Pitt Philosophy talk on Youtube ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCGdzkIa160 ... and wonder though from the talk's description whether the very long term STEM project of aging reversal genetics' and longevity genetics' drug creation, potentially helping us to live for much longer than 122 years of age (Jeanne Calment), and possibly for centuries or more is indeed a helpful to humanity STEM project, (and the opposite of a short term project), apart from the classical ideal of natural philosophy -

- and made possible thanks to STEM's emergence as distinct from natural philosophy.

But I also wonder further whether a realistic virtual earth for STEM and a realistic virtual earth for languages / philodophy AND a realistic virtual earth for genetics in 1 realistic virtual earth (thinking Google Street View with time slider, TensorFlowAI et al here
Naked Harbin Ethnography:
Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin ... as HCC center for philosophy too) would actually "cultivate an interface that is neither just STEM nor just Humanities but something in between" and would then make it possible to teach and learn philosophy as individual philosophers for ever.

Hi, Deepanwita, Colin, Peter Norvig, all,

Thanks for your emails and talk - https://www.youtube.com/live/DCGdzkIa160. At first, in watching it, I thought of (my alma mater in Portland Oregon) Reed College's approach to education, from Humanities 101, with reading the ancient Greeks, and natural philosophy, the conference method - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - much writing and learning critical thinking, and which as a required first year course informs the subsequent study at Reed of the fundamental sciences, such as chemistry, physics, biology etc., humanities, social sciences, languages, arts, and with Reed's distribution requirements, junior qualifying exams, senior thesis ... so as a classical liberal arts' education offers majors in STEM, chemistry, physics, and humanities and social science courses. World Univ and Sch seeks to make Reed College's education rock and roll newly online with a MIT OCW -centric  Google WUaS platform.

But then I grew concerned about your talk with the Maxwell, Hoffmann, and other popular philosophy references and then with the W....... silent video ... and ice stupa advertisement, and that undergraduates might be lured to Ladakh and related countries into slavery and worse ... and regarding potentially the deeply unwise illegal sex and related industries and their latent networks of violence, as international organized crime even, - and in cahoots with the academic philosophy industry, with its relationship to tragic organized crime as well and at the Univ of Pittsburgh itself (where my father was a MD professor, who received 2 brain injuries I think from UPitt's organized crime circles) & all regarding industry, business and profit motive ... and a lack of ethics, natural philosophy wise and similar.

Deepanwita,
what do you think of this Mexican border unfolding tragedy - since your university, University of Texas at El Paso is right on the Mexican-USA border?  How could your students at UT Texas both write about these tragedies, as well as document them with photography and fil making for example ? And how could they even create online schools for them at the border on the Mexican side, as well as do Peace Corp like work to create an online MIT OCW- centric Mexico World Univ & Sch ? ...

“A lot of corpses and there was nowhere to put them.” Authorities are overwhelmed by the record number of migrants who die trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. https://wsj.com/articles/illegal-immigration-mexico-us-border-deaths-c35cf892?st=y89k163sh26qep8… via
@WSJ

https://twitter.com/lbeththomas/status/1636752348469944322?s=20

It's Tweeted by Lillian Thomas, a Pittsburgher
Lillian Thomas who was involved as a writer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and city desk manager (where her father Clark Thomas was senior editor at the PPG before her, and both are/were family friends) during the massacre in Pgh in the Trump administration, where Lillian then went to the Houston Chronicle, in Texas, for around 5 years, and where Lillian (@lbeththomas) has recently become "Mid-U.S. bureau chief, Wall Street Journal," based both in
Houston and Pgh I think ...

Are you a recruiter or saleswoman, Deepanwita Dasgupta, for the illegal sex industry tragically - as a modern form of slavery, internationally - and regarding the atrocities of colonialism as well - and as a professor at the University of Texas and a fellow at UPitt philosophy?

World University and School is seeking to grow an abolition movement - to abolish the wrongful buying and selling of people in all 200 countries and in their main languages. Would you like to join - to protect people in the academic philosophy industry from criminals, perpetrators, offenders, purveyors, and from becoming victims of these rapacious profit driven industries?

Could this help with the related poverty -

I am sending you 1π! Pi is a new digital currency developed by Stanford PhDs, with over 35 million members worldwide. To claim your Pi, follow this link https://minepi.com/sgkmac and use my username (sgkmac) as your invitation code.

Please be very very careful for your self - in returning to Texas - and regarding UPitt organized crime ... as WUaS seeks to from an abolition movement and knock back organized crime in academic philosophy industry significantly.

Best wishes, abolitionally, Friendly greetings, Scott
