Federal Grants’ Workshop

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s SF office, April 4 2018

Proposal Project Outline

Organization Name: World University and School

Project Name: 2018-2019 matriculating undergraduate class at WUaS

Project Time Period: September 1 – August 31

Need:

Why is your project necessary?

This project is necessary because it will be instrumental in making highest quality free World University and School OpenCourseWare-centric university and high school education available online in the US and in all ~200 countries’ official languages.

(WUaS will develop out of CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare, with these MIT OCW Creative Commons' licensing & endorsement clarifications:
a) MIT is not affiliated with, & does not endorse, World Univ & Sch b) MIT does not offer credit to WUaS students, & c) All MIT OpenCourseWare materials are available for free through http://ocw.mit.edu. MIT OCW has asked WUaS to post this where we mention MIT OCW such as here: http://worlduniversityandschool.org.

For WUaS to be free in any proposal, MIT OCW’s CC-4 license - Creative Commons License - Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) - means that MIT OCW can be A) shared, B) adapted, but C) not commercially).

Project Description:

Goals:

Beginning with 100+ matriculating undergraduate students online this autumn 2018 in English, WUaS will graduate its first class of approximately 100 undergraduate students in 4 years for free OCW-centric Bachelor degrees, taking about 40 MIT OCW courses from their homes.

Accredit World University and School at the Bachelor’s level with Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Objectives:

Recruit ~100 17-18 year old students for 2018-2019 for free OCW online 4-year accrediting Bachelor degrees.

Increase number of majors beyond the current six.

Keep attrition below 5% in 2018-2019.

Recruit, train and retain about 20 instructors.

Methods:

One graduate student or post doc will teach a class of five-ten undergraduate students over two semesters, teaching “sections” to OCW faculty members in video.

Make available one-on-one tutoring in videoconferencing for students performing below grade level for two days per week for one year, plus tutoring upon request.

Platforms:

MIT OCW (in 5 languages eventually)

Google Education

Wiki subjects at World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects

Staffing:

20 instructors / tutors

Admissions’ team

Project coordinators for each of 6 initial majors, in addition to the ~20 instructors

Accreditation liaison

Partnerships:

N/A at this time

Evaluation:

Publicly available CC-4 MIT OCW-centric exams, papers and tests online

Student folders with progressive work samples

Volunteers and staff wiki development to evaluate and record the successful procedures and the obstacles encountered

Surveys to students, instructors, and volunteers regarding their learning experience satisfaction, etc.

Sustainability:

Grant writing

Raise monies to hire online instructors, tutors and staff for these 100+ matriculating undergraduate students online this autumn 2018 in English-speaking CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online Bachelor degrees

Funding for initial accreditation

Future support will be sought from other government agencies
