Hi Non-Theist Friends,

By way of comparison, here are some "language" resources from voices that are paralleling NtF's (mostly British/Anglo-centric) re non-theism that I've come across recently:

A
(Un)Believable?: An Atheist and a Theist Philosopher share their world-views - Cambridge University

B
DEBATE: Atheist vs Christian (Richard Dawkins vs Cardinal George Pell)

A film Richard Dawkins' mentions above in his debate in Australia with Cardinal George Pell is:

C
Julia Sweeney - Letting Go of God

D
Richard Dawkins in Conversation with Julia Sweeney- June 9, 2015 in Rochester, MN

E
Richard Dawkins on The God Delusion

I tweeted about the 1st two video conversations the other day here (where Philosopher Reverend Keith Ward is fascinating talking about consciousness, but isn't an atheist; Cambridge philosophy prof. Arif Ahmed is in this debate):

1
Stanford on Sunday-one of these philosophers, Keith Ward, will speak in Menorial church: "(Un)Believable?: An Atheist & a Theist Philosopher share their world-views - Cambridge University"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGtSjqnzZHo&sns=tw … Am curious in video abt culture (British), memes & re @HarbinBook ~

2
Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins @RichardDawkins DEBATE: Atheist vs Christian (Richard Dawkins vs Cardinal George Pell)

While this conversation about non-theism seems to be flourishing in recent years, both re religion and philosophy, evolutionary biology and film-wise, I'm particularly interested in Friendly discourse about atheistic Quakerism with a focus on language and culture, but also evolutionary biologically and brainchemistry-wise. The British focus above, and our NtF somewhat British-American focus (re "place" too), leaves open another ~200 countries and their languages, and their possible NtF discourses about nontheist Friends (not to mention diversity).

But while engaged debate can be interesting about N-tQ (atheist Quakerism, for some), I'm appreciative of the centering down of friendly Silent Meeting (as neurophysiology too), and the community and language that emerges from this, but am also interested in an ongoing way in a NtF language of eliciting the neurophysiology of loving bliss ... "the valley of love and delight" to quote an old Quaker/Shaker hymn {"Simple Gifts"}.

All this said, there's further language out there with which to come into conversation ... and to grow our NTFriendly / Non-theistic Friendly conversation. :)

Sincerely,
Scott

[NTF-talk] the "justification" of Non-Theist Quaker thought

*

Thanks, too, Anita and Victor, for your good thoughts,

I'd like to add that, for me, in Quaker senses, my A) conscience leads me to (f/Friendly) non-theism (i.e. evidence-wise), - and that I'm a bit of a B) conscientious objector to the idea of theism, and related translations here, that C) "this I know experimentally/experientially" too (George Fox) - and further as I think about questions of non-theism, - and also as a kind of D) "seeker of the truth" (re early Friends too)  ... and re E) George Fox's "What canst thou say?" ... the A-E letters referring to kind of Quaker ideas' "justifications" writ contemporary.

Cheers, Scott

Excellently put!  Thanks.

Thanks, Anita, and nontheist f/Friends,

Would like to add, thinking-wise (and in a f/Friendly manner), that I don't think one/humans can know whether the "divine" exists or not, philosophically and logically, so I guess I'm a bit of an agnostic on these questions of non-theism too, since I agree. A friend, George Alexander MD (who's wife/widow is a Quaker - he's deceased), who introduced me to the idea of Nontheist Friends, and was very articulate about his reasons for his nontheism (and with reasons for why religion is so problematic), introduced me to this reasoning, which makes sense. Dawkins uses the word nontheism in his talk with Cardinal Pell in Australia (from a recent NtF email I sent) - which "DEBATE: Atheist vs Christian (Richard Dawkins vs Cardinal George Pell)" you'll find here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/04/reinefjorden-ntf-talk-some-language-of.html ... and Richard Dawkins is also an "agnostic" he says in this video, interestingly. George Alexander had some Friendly inclinations.

Friendly regards, Scott
