Puma (genus): Thank you for your edifying talk recently about tourism and Costa Rica at Cal, My student paper "Gazing at the Box: Tourism in the Context of the Internet and Globalization (Internetity)," a) Dean MacCannell's "The Tourist" (vis-a-vis tourism in modernity, in my reading), b) John Urry (vis-a-vis postmodernity), c) Thurot and Thurot (vis-a-vis an 'advertising discourse') vis-a-vis, d) tourism and the Internet (influenced by Manuel Castells), The 'Costa Rica,' wiki, subject page at WUaS, which isn't yet begun, will become an accredited, online university unto itself

Dear Lin,

Thank you for a very edifying talk recently about tourism and Costa Rica at Cal (UC Berkeley), and from what I would call your French perspective.

Here's a student paper "Gazing at the Box: Tourism in the Context of the Internet and Globalization (Internetity)" - http://scottmacleod.com/anth250v.htm - (and also accessible here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm) I wrote in Nelson Graburn's course "Tourism, Art and Modernity" which I was in about 12 years' ago where I examine -

a) Dean MacCannell's "The Tourist" (vis-a-vis a discourse about tourism emerging from his interpretation of modernity, in my reading),

b) John Urry (vis-a-vis postmodernity),

c) Thurot and Thurot (vis-a-vis an 'advertising discourse') vis-a-vis

d) tourism and the Internet (influenced by Manuel Castells) ...

I'm developing wiki, World University and School, which is like Wikipedia (now in 300 languages) with MIT OCW (now with about 2,400 MIT courses, Creative Commons' licensed), with free, online, university degrees planned, and with some Tourism, wiki, subject pages, such as - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Tourism_Studies.

WUaS is also planned for all 200+ countries, each an university (and all 7,139 languages, each a wiki-school for people-to-people teaching) - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - but the 'Costa Rica,' wiki, subject page, which will become an accredited, online university unto itself, isn't begun yet. The current, WUaS wiki in English has about 570 wiki pages, to give you an idea of where we are presently. As WUaS branches into other languages and countries, WUaS plans to begin with the United Nations's languages, and for degrees, eventually, Creative Commons' licensed.

Looking forward to staying in touch and further communication.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi Lin,

Thank you for your email. I added my email to you here in my blog - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2013/03/puma-thank-you-for-your-edifying-talk.html.

One significance of my above paper is that it illustrates how "Tourism Studies," even as a kind of academic discipline, can interpret the very widespread phenomenon of tourism, as 'conditions,' discourses or contexts, and suggests that the internet and digital technologies are significant to the other conditions, and perhaps creates a new kind of condition or discourse for "Tourism Studies," and perhaps even with significance for other disciplines, distinct from modernity, postmodernity and advertising tourism discourses.

Let's have a coffee together sometime at a cafe near the Kroeber Anthropology building at Cal, and perhaps talk about developing the Costa Rica wiki, university at WUaS in English, French and Spanish, among other languages.  :)

Best regards,
Scott

Conachair: "Physical and Online St. Kilda: A Comparison of 'Senses of Place,'" Actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book chapters, 'History,' wiki, subject page at WUaS here with many, online, C.C. courses from MIT and Yale, While WUaS has begun a 'Scotland,' wiki, subject page (which doesn't yet have any courses), WUaS hasn't yet begun the Canada page, for example, both of which WUaS would like to become universities unto themselves, accessible from WUaS Nation States' wiki page

Hi, KJ,

Thanks for a very interesting talk and conversation around the table yesterday in Berkeley. I found your talk fascinating in terms of how you 'theorized' conceptualizing guest books.

Here's the St. Kilda web site's guest book - http://www.kilda.org.uk/frame10.htm - which is still going strongly nearly 10 years after I left the University of Edinburgh, having written this paper "Physical and Online St. Kilda: A Comparison of 'Senses of Place'" - which you'll find here ... http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm ... and here ... http://worlduniversityandschool.academia.edu/ScottMacLeod/Papers - and having found informants for my virtual study from this National Trust for Scotland St. Kilda guest book. And here is some of the nascent multimedia - http://www.kilda.org.uk/frame7.htm - which I was examining as early 'virtual place.' I was asking in what ways could this, and other multimedia on this web site, be considered the beginnings of virtual place, or a 'sense of place' online, per what informants said in reply to surveys I emailed. I was also asking with these surveys in what ways people's 'senses of place' of actual and virtual St. Kilda were comparable. It's amazing what data possibilities (including email addresses) there are in an online guestbook.

I'm engaging similar questions in my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book, some draft chapters of which are accessible here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Harbin%20Book%20Section - with many other Harbin categories in my blog. I'm presently writing the 9th of 9 (draft) chapters.

You'll find the beginning of the 'History,' wiki, subject page at World University and School here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/History (accessible from here: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects ) - with many, online, C.C. courses from MIT and Yale, but which is open and editable. While World University and School has begun a 'Scotland' wiki subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scotland (which doesn't yet have any courses) - WUaS hasn't yet begun the Canada page, for example, both of which WUaS like to become universities unto themselves, (but it has begun some other Nation States' pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - all of which WUaS hopes will become online, C.C. MIT-centric, accredited universities offering Creative Commons' licensed, MIT-centric degrees, to give you an idea of how WUaS works).

Let's stay in communication.

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Scott,

It was great to meet you, too. Thanks so much for all of these links and details. I definitely look forward to keeping in touch and especially to hearing about how World University and School progresses.

Warm regards,

Archaeopteryx: Conversation about Evolution, Did dinosaurs use tools? Talking with a son about evolutionary biology, and the son's questions and arguments, I would posit that claws, teeth and eggs are tools

DB: Bastian's (~ 10 year old) question at the Burke Museum Dino Day: Did dinosaurs use tools?
Paleontologist response: That seems unlikely, they were reptiles, not like us.

Bastian: Crows use tools.

DB: Moment of silence followed by heated debate about brain to body ratio between paleontologists, ending in: That is a VERY good question, and I could get tenure if I answered it.

SI: That is about as awesome as it gets.

Scott: ... teeth, claws and eggs are tools, I would posit! ... Sebastian, let's define tools in an evolutionary biology context, beyond the crow's tool use comparison; (cow birds learn song, and mate by it - with parallels to language learning, evolutionarily). Is language a tool?

DB: Bastian's next argument was from the scarcity of fossils, we don't know the range of brain sizes in dinosaurs, so he bets on probabilistic grounds that there were tool-using dinosaurs. This spawned a secondary debate among the paleontologists how we could recognize dinosaur tools if we found them; how much tool preparation do crows and parrots do?

HS: so how would you answer the question? a dinosaur that died and was fossilized still clutching something that could only make sense as a tool? a pattern of intentional scratches that could only be made by a stick and not claws or teeth? a carnivore which lacks any built-in apparatus to catch the prey they were demonstrably eating?

DB: One sharp grad student argued that crows are dinosaurs, so yes, they do use tools, but that they are smarter than dinosaurs that lived before the K-T boundary event (perhaps from evolutionary pressure from mammals).

Scott: Are biological adaptations tools? an argument could be made ... wings, teeth, claws and eggs

JA: And I would argue dinosaurs are birds...

Scott: Ah, archaeopteryx ... I find this image somehow very beautiful ... http://www.fossilmuseum.net/fossilpictures-wpd/Archaeopteryx/Archaeopteryx.jpg ... fossilized, biological, tool development before our very (toolish) eyes.

HS: I think "tool" is a mental adaptation, not a physiological one. a claw is a tool, it's true, but the sense of the question being asked is that of using external objects by choice ,as distinct from having a non external tool built in. sea otters use rocks to break into shells, while most creatures use beaks or claws.

HS: I think there's something useful in the bird/dinosaur distinction. for example, modern birds don't have teeth, and do have beaks, while dinosaurs are the reverse. modern birds have wings, possibly vestigial, while only a few dinosaurs did. I don't think it's clear whether all dinosaurs were warm blooded or not, while all modern birds are. same for feathers. I think what this means is that birds and dinosaurs are distinct, but members of a common category that subsumes them both, but excludes mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, etc.

KS: A "tool" is an abstraction. A generalization of a pattern that then finds the ability to adapt something in the environment to thatt pattern but in a specific manner.

EE: Your kids are awesome.

DB: Scott MacLeod - If we claim all morphological features are tools, we lose the useful distinction between creatures that use external tools and those that don't. If a clamshell is a tool, if cellulose in a tree trunk is a tool, if enzymes to digest milk are a tool, then we need a new word for things that weren't grown by the organism which the organism uses to accomplish its goals (with a caveat about goals and intentionality for non-conscious organisms). So, I like to keep "tool" meaning something extrinsic to the organism. Stephanie Leary please weigh in here.

AL: Go Bastian!

Scott: More later, but here's the Apple Dictionary V. 2.x definition of 'tool' ... "a device or implement, esp. one held in the hand, used to carry out a particular function : gardening tools" ... adaptable to claw, but not necessarily egg ...

KS: Well but an artificial limb is a tool but it is hardly "held in one's hand'. Similarly a clamshell IS a tool when it is used to carve soft wood.

DB: KS - A clamshell is a tool for anyone but the clam. Cellulose is a tool for anyone but the tree.

DB:  Scott MacLeod - I don't think part of an organism can be called a device or implement. Your definition rules out claws.

KS: what about flowering plants that tske advantage of existing efields in the atmosphete?

Scott: I see dogs digging with the claws/nails on their paws as similar to a 3 prong 'claw' for gardening, for example ... both are devices and implements ... and the claws of turtles, moles, too ... the list is long ... And turtles seem to dig with their forelimb 'tools'/claws, and then plant their eggs in the sand, possibly similarly to my using the 3 prong, gardening 'claw' and then putting seeds in the ground ... I think body parts, selected for by evolution by natural selection, can be defined as tools (in my opinion) ... I'm still appreciating Sebastian's reply as well as the question itself ... So turtles, a kind of dinosaur, loosely defined may use their own intrinsic bodypart tools, and crows extrinsic ones ... Homo faber is not as unique as we might like to think in terms of tool use ... yet further research into evolution and tools is clearly a good idea ... Here's the wiki, evolution, subject page at MIT OCW-centric World University and School ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Evolution ... Yea, Bastian!

... and about Archaeopteryx's significance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeopteryx ... are wings, feathers and claws 'tools,' as adaptations?

Sun headed into hibernation: Upcoming presentation at San Francisco Friends' Meeting, Developing outline, Email about WUaS sent to f/Friends after a recent Quaker, College Park Quarterly Meeting

I'm glad to be giving a presentation in the "second hour" at San Francisco Friends' Meeting this Sunday at 1pm on 9th Street - all are welcome - about Quaker-informed World University and School, entitled something like:

World University & School and Friends

What is World University and School?

- It's a Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OpenCourseWare-centric, online, startup, free-to-students, accrediting, wiki university and school

- For planning purposes, this is WUaS’s first year curriculum with MIT professors

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ -

and with graduate student instructors facilitating the conference method -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning -

in Google + group video Hangouts -

https://plus.google.com/hangouts/.

Here is The College at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School - and -

Admissions at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School (like applying to MIT).

(Students will probably be living at home in the rooms they went to high school in, and be responsible for their own books, computers, etc. -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS).

- On its degree side, WUaS plans to offer online, accredited bachelor, Ph.D., law, and M.D. degrees as well as International Baccalaureate (I.B.), high school diplomas, and eventually in many languages and countries, accrediting on C.C. MIT OCW, including its high school subject matter.

- WUaS is also a 501 (c) (3) education charity and service.

What are its f/Friendly influences?

- Monthly business meeting in the manner of f/Friends/Quakers informs WUaS's business practices

- Quaker leading / nontheistically f/Friendly leading ... I minister nontheistically with WUaS

- F/friendly, academic ethos for overachievers, like at Haverford, Swarthmore and Earlham, etc.?

- WUaS, Friendly-related, wiki pages as examples (there are others, and we can create new, Subject pages at WUaS about whatever subject we are lead to):

Ahimsa - Nonharming - Nonviolence - To avoid violence:
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ahimsa_-_Nonharming_-_Nonviolence_-_To_avoid_violence

Consensus Decision Making:
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Consensus_Decision_Making

Peace and Social Justice Studies:
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peace_and_Social_Justice_Studies

Quakers - Religious Society of Friends:
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Quakers_-_Religious_Society_of_Friends

- A vision of love, in its positive senses, influences WUaS

'How can I create, teach and learn in a Friendly manner at WUaS?'

- Right now ... demo ... edit a page … WUaS main, Subject template example - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE

- It's wiki - share as if in Quaker Meeting, for example, at a musical subject in the World University Music School (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School), by teaching to your web camera

'My son or daughter is in high school, and we're beginning to look at colleges. Will s/he be able to attend online for free?'

- Yes, apply this autumn 2013, and matriculate in autumn 2014; WUaS will be a little like homeschooling, but MIT OCW-centric, academically.

- WUaS is in the process of accrediting in California, and soon nationally, costing Creative Commons' licensed WUaS around $15,000 in 2013, and $28,000 in 2014.

- ‘Could World University and School make a presentation this autumn at my son/daughter's Quaker high school?’

Here's an email I sent to f/Friends after a recent Quaker, College Park Quarterly Meeting in California:

Dear Friends,

I've included EB's email below about exploring Friendly enthusiasms for Quaker-informed World University and School, emerging out of conversations Quaker CPQM.

In this spirit, I wonder if I might begin a kind of CPQM Quaker ad hoc email committee for World University and School for sharing Quaker enthusiasms and ideas vis-a-vis World University and School, and even to inform WUaS further with Quaker spirit / thinking / culture. I'm starting this email group from here - worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com, - and please just let me know by replying if any of you don't want to be on it. There are so many creative opportunities for open teaching, learning and creation at WUaS. :)

And here's the printable flyer I made available this past weekend at CPQM and other related Quaker resources -

"World University & School seeks Friendly, undergraduate students for  free, online, MIT OCW-centric, bachelor’s degrees to apply in the autumn of 2013, for matriculation in autumn 2014" ... http://scottmacleod.com/WUaSFriendsFlyerforProspectiveStudentApplicants.pdf - which I'm also attaching, and which you'll find at - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/10/whales-swimming-quaker-informed-world.html.

As an example from and for Quakers of how openly someone can teach to WUaS, someone could have filmed the dramatization of Algonquin-English language translation in the CPQM Talent Show by Bruce Grimes and Tockhwock and then add this Algonquin translation video to World University and School's Algonquin, wiki, subject page at all-languages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - which Algonquin is not yet started, but where quite a few other languages have pages.

Very much a Friendly leading, I think free, Creative Commons' licensed, MIT-centric, bachelor, Ph.D., I.B., law and M.D. degrees/diploma, - as well as open, free, online, wiki teaching and learning, planned in all languages and countries, - will help many, many people, - and the Quaker colleges, for example, Guilford, Swarthmore, Earlham and Haverford, all don't offer Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees, let alone via the web.

Cheers,
Scott

*

Looked at your link, Scott -- meant to do it before I sent first reply.

Seems unlikely to me that CPQM as a unit could get involved in this fascinating project.  As you have seen/heard, we are very hard pressed to find the manpower for our current commitments, and your project is high tech beyond the capacity of many of the Friends who have free time.

But that wouldn't stop you from getting some experienced Quakers involved in helping to define and maintain your style of operation. And you can certainly spread the word among Friends who might want to participate.

It will be interesting to see how ES responds.  BR also has some good computer experience, having created a video game encouraging peace-making concepts.

Cheers.............................EB

Friends,

Instead of biting our tongues we can each speak in our own way as we move forward together. We can metaphorically listen from the heart and speak from the heart.
An anthology of Quaker writings about this approach is now at our website, nontheistfriends.org (see link, below).
Have a fine day, everyone.
Os

Great, Os,

Thank you!

I added your "Quaker Writing on Listening and Speaking from the Heart" writing above to the 'Nontheist Friend's (atheist Quakers?),' wiki, subject page at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) - which also welcomes videos we all might create by teaching / speaking from the heart to our web cameras, perhaps, for example, in conversation form in the Google + group video Hangout.

Here's how I've created the reference:

Cresson, Osborn. 2013. [http://www.nontheistfriends.org/article/quaker-writing-on-listening-and-speaking-from-the-heart/ Quaker Writing on Listening and Speaking from the Heart]. March 11. nontheistfriends.org.

This 'Nontheist Friend's (atheist Quakers?),' wiki page at WUaS itself is an expression of speaking from the heart, and as wiki (editable, web pages), could facilitate any of us to do so, simply by clicking 'edit this page,' for example, after speaking to your web camera, or writing a web page, perhaps based on an email we've shared.

With friendly regards,
Scott

Coronal loops: Turning on loving bliss neurophysiology / bodymind/brain chemistry seems clear: turn on one's favorite music, and I, for example, can go to loving bliss neurochemistry regularly and repeatedly, You?, Wiki page for Loving Bliss Neurophysiology Eliciting at WUaS, What happens when your inside, bodymind weather - self-perceived and experienced - is stormy, or gray, or fuzzy? Loving bliss now and whenever - let's figure out how

Turning on loving bliss neurophysiology / bodymind/brain chemistry seems clear:

turn on one's favorite music, and I, for example, can go to loving bliss chemistry regularly and repeatedly. You?

These days, I'm listening to a lot of acoustic blues, Grateful Dead and Nikhil Bannerjee / raga, much on Archive.org - http://archive.org/details/GratefulDead - and Pandora.com - http://www.pandora.com/ - (not available in parts of Europe, I've heard), and I can experience neural cascades of pleasure again and again, and sometimes intensely, as one quality of this. That loving bliss neurophysiology, in all its varied and potential qualities, is one of the best experiences there is in life is one justification for this inquiry, focus and exploration; that questions of the experience of loving bliss, bodymind neurochemistry is under-examined, to say the least, is another.

Here's a wiki page at WUaS for this -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) - where I'd like to start generating a literature review, which include both literary literature, as well as especially MDMA literature reviews.

But what happens when your inside, bodymind weather - self-perceived and experienced (perhaps with the help of sophisticated instruments and tools, such as neural head nets, etc.) - is stormy, or gray, or fuzzy, to use a few metaphors for a very complex, evolutionary biology-informed, as well as linguistically- and culturally- informed, inner soup?

Why not study and learn how to go there with a memory, with daily foci, and whenever, as a consequence of how and why loving bliss neurophysiology / bodymind/brain neurobiology works?

Further research is welcome, needed and warranted, with a focus on eliciting loving bliss brain chemistry naturally.

Loving bliss neurophysiology / bodymind/brain chemistry seems to be a question of neurobiology/chemistry, in my hypothesizing, and not contrasts {given MDMA}.

It seems plausible that we might generate such neurophysiology when awake or asleep, as neurochemistry.

Kangaroo: 3/9/2013 WUaS Business Meeting MINUTES, WUaS is seeking a ‘mothership’ Law School, WUaS would like eventually to become a significant Creative Commons’ content and course generator and in all 7,413+ languages and 204+ countries

Present: L.V., S.M., and J.M. (in Spain, watching G+ broadcast and in non G+ Hangout text chat)

1 News –

Accreditation:

Minute: One main outcome of today's conversation is to seek an EXCEPTION to the state of California's 2009 law (regulated by the CA Bureau of Private Post-secondary Education - BPPE) requiring a physical site (rather than try to change the law), on the grounds that, like libraries, Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW and C.C. WUaS (which is MIT-centric) have a public mission (of free-to-students, C.C., MIT OCW-centric, university degrees, in WUaS's case), per this article by John Palfrey - http://www.thedigitalshift.com/2013/03/copyright/why-we-miss-the-first-sale-doctrine-in-digital-libraries/ - about the large-scale Digital Public Library of America, parts of which should become accessible online in April 2013.

For these reasons:

a.
Creative Commons’ licensed MIT OCW-centric WUaS plans to offer ONLINE, free, MIT OCW-centric, C.C., WUaS, university degrees, so a site isn't necessary and it's a cost

b.
WUaS is Creative Commons’ licensed and is free, and shares a public mission (vis-à-vis libraries)

c.
other states may have non-physical site, requirement, legal precedent for educational institutions, e.g. Nevada

d.
re: homeschooling laws in different states.

2.2 Finance

a.
Treasurer's report for February 2013

About $1,000 in the WUaS bank account, with no tax-exempt donations in February

2.3 Information Technology

a. Wikidata news

- WUaS hasn’t yet heard back from L.P. concerning my collaboration conversation inquiry. They may not have grown enough to be able to have this conversation yet.

- Wikidata’s search engine ‘sucks big time’ at this point – per one of their core developers.

- Wikidata's inter-languages' focus (it's being written for Wikipedia's 285 languages) parallels WUaS's.

b.  WUaS’s current academic platform

For planning purposes this is WUaS’s platform - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - with graduate student instructors facilitating the conference method in Google + Hangouts - https://plus.google.com/hangouts/ .

2.8 Languages' and Countries’ committee

Vis-à-vis other Languages and Countries, WUaS particularly sees possibilities vis-a-vis accreditation in Spain and China, for example, as well as MIT-centric courses, translation, and OER resources in other languages.

J in Spain:  Awesome. Accreditation, Translation and OER resources. I'll keep that in mind.

5.  WUaS Board

Scott will get in touch with G.N. again, about his becoming a WUaS Board Member.

7. SF f/Friends/Quaker WUaS developments

Scott is giving a presentation about WUaS and Quakers in the Second Hour at San Francisco Friends’ Meeting

Action plan:

1. seek an exception to BPPE's (state of California) physical site requirement, soon, by communicating that WUaS is Creative Commons' licensed, pointing to the libraries and the DPLA's exceptions to copyright.

2 start accreditation process (with WASC and DETC)

3. seek students to apply this autumn 2013 to matriculate in autumn 2014

- WUaS is seeking a ‘mothership’ Law School (much as MIT OCW has the mothership of MIT itself), such as the Stanford Law School, to collaborate with to create online Law Schools in the 204 countries (per the Olympics), and also to create significant numbers of lawyers’ and legal jobs, worldwide.

- World University and School would like eventually to become a significant Creative Commons’ content and course generator and in all 7,413+ languages and 204+ countries, building on C.C. MIT OCW's 2,150 courses.

Damselfly on yellow flower: WUaS plans to create around 204, accredited, online universities, in some of the main languages in those countries, and 7,413 wiki-schools, I've long been curious and fascinated by the culture of learning in the greater Boston, MA, area with 52 institutions of higher learning and particularly with Harvard and MIT, Would like to help facilitate WUaS's pages to come alive with community, conversation, music, research, knowledge-generation, information technology, and people's creativity over time, a kind of flourishing

WUaS plans to create around 204, accredited, online universities, in some of  the main languages in those countries, (the number per the Olympics' countries), many offering Creative Commons' licensed bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees, and 7,413+ wiki-schools, each a wiki page to begin, (per the languages in "The Ethnologue").

I've long been curious and fascinated by the culture of learning in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area with 52 institutions of higher learning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_metropolitan_Boston) and particularly with Harvard and MIT, as some of the greatest universities in the U.S. and possibly worldwide. How did this culture of learning, especially vis-a-vis research, find form in the Boston area as place?

WUaS would like to generate an ethos of excellence among its online universities and schools, and how can it learn from the Harvard and MIT and Boston higher education conversation, and over centuries? How? Come into conversation with them, and other great universities?

While WUaS is MIT OCW-centric to begin, and will long be MIT-centric, WUaS also eventually plans to engage the Open Educational Resources (OER) of these great universities - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings - worldwide, as a Creative Commons' licensed university, to eventually generate C.C. resources in many languages.

I'm also curious to help facilitate World University and School's pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - to come alive with community, conversation, music, research, knowledge-generation, information technology, and people's creativity over time, a kind of flourishing, and as a wiki, and in all languages and countries.

Dear Universitians,

Thank you for joining the World University and School team.

I'm glad to report that MIT-centric World University and School is beginning the accreditation process, having communicated with three, accrediting agencies in the past few weeks, and is beginning to seek prospective, undergraduate applicants for free-to-students, online, MIT OCW-centric, Creative Commons' licensed, WUaS bachelors degrees this autumn (application deadline is 1/1/2014), to matriculate at WUaS in the autumn of 2014. Accreditation costs for WUaS, due soon or now, are around $18,000, and WUaS will begin to do outreach, share press releases, seek student applicants, etc., having begun the accreditation process.

WUaS would like to invite you to participate in our hour-long, monthly, business meeting this Saturday, March 9th, beginning at 9 a.m., Pacific Coast Time / 12 noon East Coast Time.
This month we'll meet online in a Google + video hangout, (with its 2 channels for communication, via group video and group text chat, opening opportunities for communication).  And this month, I'll send out again a second email a few minutes prior to 9am, to our entire WUaS email list with the actual web address / URL of the Google + group video Hangout.

You'll also find the Hangout posted here - https://plus.google.com/u/0/115890623333932577910/posts - at WUaS's G+ profile page findable by searching in Google + on worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com. Here's an example of a WUaS Google + video hangout meeting, - "World University and School, Student, Board / Team's 1st meeting 3 Nov 2012" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR0y7Z4saHI - and a good overview of WUaS, from a Stanford Coursera course I took in last autumn called "Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship" on World University and School's YouTube video channel https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch.

The agenda for the upcoming business meeting is at: http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2013/03/march-9-open-monthly-business-meeting.html.

The Treasurer's report for February 2013 is attached.

The next, hour-long, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, April 13, 2013 in a Google + Hangout.

World University and School is looking for a new, Board member to focus on fundraising, and to actually bring in significant monies for WUaS, which you'll see on the above agenda.
Concerning this WUaS team email list, we'll generally send out an email once a month. If you'd like to receive more frequent, sporadic, WUaS emails, please reply to this email telling me so. If you could, please REPLY with UNSUBSCRIBE, or an alternative email address, if you wish NOT to receive WUaS's emails, or receive them in a different email account, - and WUaS would be very grateful.

Free, online, wiki WUaS, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, is planned for all 3,000-8,000 languages and for around 200 countries, with free, C.C., university degrees - bachelors, Ph.D., law and M.D. - accrediting on MIT OpenCourseWare+, and will help many, many people.

Thank you again for your interest in helping grow World University and School.

All the best,
Scott
