Thanks for this great, timely and topical conversation, Lewis, Laurie and Dan! As I understand it, historically patents referred to physical inventions, and copyright was for intellectual property (is this correct?), but that this is changing with software and in the information technology revolution; as artificial intelligence develops, is there a distinction emerging between AI intellectual (IP), and software (eg pre LIDAR stacks) IP or intellectual property (and possibly re copyright)? Thank you, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)

And, Lewis, in your role on the SF Federal Reserve, and regarding World Univ & Sch's plans to explore distributing via UBI experiments, in all ~200 countries' and in all 7,117 living languages (and to alleviate poverty), a single cryptocurrency backed by most of ~200 countries' central banks (think a digital Euro in 19 out of 28 nation states, or the international dollar in most countries become digital), to all 7.8 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item # or similar, what role might IP play here if any ? Couple this with the current environment of unprecedented disruption where companies are grappling with evolving business models and how best to create enterprise value, IP assets are increasingly more critical for enterprise value creation, access to capital, de-risking supply chains, and protecting a re-imagined post-crisis future. Unfortunately, IP assets have historically been undervalued, under-protected, and under-appreciated as a source of significant value to companies of all sizes, at all stages and in all industries. Boards are now taking a fresh look at how best to build and leverage IP assets in their businesses. This panel will provide new insights on how best to integrate IP strategy into board and executive level discussions.

The Difference Between Copyrights, Trademarks and Patents
Whether you’re an inventor, a writer or an artist, you need to know what these each mean — and which you need to protect your work.
https://www.nytimes.com/article/copyrights-trademarks-patents.html
"What is a copyright?
Copyrights protect original artistic works. That includes things like photos, books, movies, songs, paintings, software code, architecture and even the article you are reading right now. ...
What is a trademark?
When most people think of trademarks, they think of brand names like Coca-Cola, Apple or McDonald’s. These are good examples, but the category is even broader.
“A trademark protects a word, phrase, symbol or device — the mark — used in commerce to identify and distinguish one product from another,” Dr. Evans said. ...
What is a patent?
Patents protect novel inventions or discoveries like pharmaceutical drugs, complex machinery or advanced software. By prohibiting others from using or importing the invention, a patent essentially grants its owner a monopoly on the innovation, but only for a limited time — generally 20 years. After that, anyone can use it free."
