When are we going to check in to Harbin together again? Am missing Harbin only a bit, because I still don't think it's safe to head back there (even after receiving 2 email invitations from Deirdre Davis a year or two ago - who might be a kind of managing director - MD - there, sardonically construed even). It was fun to travel there with you in 2012.
How are you, and how are you settling in, world traveler, after your recent trip to the ME? Just shared the following with my younger brother, and my mother, -and since you're a younger brother (of Bill), I'd thought I'd share it with you too. More context in the blog post (and some other recent blog posts too).
Am also wondering where I'm going to live in spring of 2022 when my lease in this 'safe house' north of Berkeley is over ... and as a whistle-blower. Am considering exploring a kind of political asylum - on the east coast, or even in Scotland, Germany, or another German speaking country (since I speak German, and think that ethics, and regarding the nation state, are more intact and are working there, and even enforceable with laws that are effective).

I just added some of this "Please be careful" thread to this blog post - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/09/banyan-tree-stammtisch.html?m=0 - as a heads' up for others too. As scary as spiked vaccines, for example, might be for some, in this society of 330 million in the USA, and a history of somewhat decent legal and medical systems, I think it'll be a long time yet before we find out what actually happened, and who died and why and how, and who made the decisions - let alone that they might be brought to justice, and especially social justice. For example, Ma just mailed me an NYT's article by Ross Douthat from the Sunday, September 19, 2021 NYT, which said that 670,000 people have died from Covid-19 (670 happens too, - coincidentally or not - to be the same number of the house in Canyon 94516 I lived in for about 13 years, after a number change part way through), and the Op Ed also continued, for example, that "Yes, there does seem to be a notable tendency for right-wing talk radio hosts to die of the disease -- " ... which seems to me like these deaths could possibly have been kinds of political killings even! So please be careful (if for example there's also been a major failing of psychiatry and the law too, in the USA, and in many countries around the world, to successfully protect victims, for example, of the intl. illegal sex industry, and its latent culture of violence too), and as a kind of internet ecology' (a concept I'm developing potentially re karma and dharma and ethics, etc.) swings around in a different direction. I just talked with Pin Mazumdar on the phone this evening from the UU Church of Kensington Berkeley, and I think he said the Covid-19 pandemic isn't over yet. He had returned from Madison Wisconsin, driving there with his wife.
Thinking of you - per the 2 younger brother potential warnings I've heard directly from 2 people who won't be involved in World Univ & Sch.

Nice to hear your human voice at the beginning of our conversation with your warmth - 'hi' - and at its close too, with your understanding and compassion - 'I really hope you have a good week' (recognizing perhaps that my whistle-blowing is stressful). We are living in strange times, with this fabricated alienating coronavirus pandemic, and having lived in 'sick Canyon' renting from mentally ill, psychiatrically sick former landlord t.w. - and among Canyon related sickness, relating to, hypothetically, a very old culture of perpetrators, offenders, purveyors, drug dealers, scofflaws, outlaws, racists (learned of a hanging tree, for ex., a mile down the road, from Jono in a trailer, a few years before he died) ... and probably most anything sick under the sun people can think up. Similar illegal sex industry and psychiatric issues with the SF Quaker Meeting and possibly all of Pacific Yearly Meeting (Quaker) + with a big plus ... And California still hasn't gotten its act together, I think, there in Canyon, ... but maybe it is doing so in this time of Covid-19 pandemic change (having had that (a) telephone hearing with a California judge about health insurance before I moved out of Canyon, for example, in the spring of 2020) ... To be seen ...
I'd prefer to continue to live on the west coast or east coast of the USA - since my actual virtual Harbin Ethnography project is somehow similarly both amazingly wondrous, and alienating (re Harbin's potential latent culture of violence - and since Sunheart, friend and informant, died there last autumn 2020), ... and my Harbin projects' meditation focus, and soaking in the warm pool with people, esp affords deep centering (actually and virtually) - and not somehow go into a curious whistle-blown political asylum in Germany or Scotland for example, but a lot depends on California's ability to clean up its act, and as I continue to call for abolition of the illegal sex industry, (following on the abolition of slavery).
One other item from our conversation ... re the NYT article on academic tenure you mentioned falling asleep over :) ... and the many World Univ & Sch considerations about this complex issue include not only about faculty so people in 200 countries' major online planned universities, and their many languages' cultures, but also the possibility of aging reversal genetic drug therapies making tenure for 3 centuries for example seem to me untenable or unviable at this point. Further research needed.
So it was really nice to hear your connection 🙂 in voice ... which I'm seeking more of ... and perhaps in finding a talking friend and possibly a long term partner with whom to begin a family. Returning some to The Desiderata, but also to family - you, and Sandy (but about whom I'm concerned too regarding possibly the illegal s x trade in New England ... And these recent mentions of a younger brother dying, or not doing well after a vaccine), so until he possibly cleans up his act, it's not easy to talk with him. And regarding these possible 'political killings' mentioned in the NYT Ross Douthat article due the Covid-19 pandemic disease diagnosis, of conservative talk show hosts - which is further alienating to me. Change is possible, through teaching even - and at World University and School ... But this is a long process. I'd think as an aside that Angela Merkel could well help facilitate growing World Univ & Sch as a conversation re her shaping the political discourse in Germany so remarkably over the past 16 years - highlighting certain actors, and structuring the conversation among constituencies ... All germane for WUaS.
So, developing a human voice in World University and School, and in my own life, in somewhat alienated SF Bay Area (with so many people deeply retreated in their homes and languages, and not really with much of a constructive civil discourse possibility in the air) leaves a lot of opportunities for this very diverse work world we're now moving more deeply into.

Harbin is open apparently, and Sajjad@Harbin.org is/was his email address, which may be buried in your inbox even. With an invite from Sajjad or Eric Richardson, I think it would be safe to visit Harbin again.
A realistic virtual Harbin for Ethnographic (& STEM research) study informs my actual virtual, physical digital realistic virtual earth / universe thinking. Motivation-wise, these come out of my virtual St.Kilda / Hirta, Scotland study of 2003-2004 at the University of Edinburgh (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/09/hirta.html?m=0).
Let's plan a trip on the PCT - maybe for next summer, and possibly with pack animals too. Took a great trip in the Olympic wilderness area, and orienteering off trail on top of the world, with a Reed College friend too, on the way to my second year of hiking the PCT from Manning Park 100 miles inland, in Canada, south thru half of Washington state, in 1982. Wanna hike on the PCT there in 2023? :)

Open Band Scottish Country Dancing is still shutdown, and not necessarily an opportunity to meet new friends. I do Yoga and meditation on my own, beneficially, but don't think teaching or taking classes are a good idea or way to meet friends. I've inquired with avuncular Alden (in his 80s and a favorite) about hiking the California Coastal Trail first in SF Bay Area - thanks to you - but haven't heard back yet. And don't know of any reading groups whatsoever in Bay Area ...
But thanks to you too, I took a chance and reached out to Sajjad and others (since there's strength in numbers) about checking into Harbin - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/10/zinnia-peruviana-non.html?m=0 (with related analysis about some whistle blowing I'm continuing to do and regarding World University and School) - and may not here back for awhile. Apologies for including you in a large group email, but think you could make it work, and safely. Traveling to Harbin somewhat regularly for next Ethnographic project would change dramatically the self-quarantine isolation hangover aspect of coronavirus pandemic (after a kind of isolation in the spring somewhat sick culture of Canyon 94516), but wouldn't necessarily lead to new friends in the curious culture of California for me.

And divergent from Harbin's countercultural history, might having a police person on property be better CA insurance-wise? (A different kind of insurance than it's quite broad Hippy community with their own economies).
In one of those Harbin ironies, Rosemary Cordova, Harbin office manager (and friend), and mom of Lazarus, was married to the Chief of Police in the area, not living together. Rosemary drove me into SF a couple of times back I think in 2004 ... When I was a Harbin resident for 4.5 months ... And exploring the idea of writing a Harbin Ethnography (just back from UNI EDINBURGH Scotland for a year, and after 2 years before that at UC Santa Barbara in Anthropology related academic disciplines, and before traveling on Semester at Sea in autumn 2005). Was HCC founder Ishvara snortling that Rosemary's son's father was the local chief of police? (Is there a long history of police corruption in California and how has this played out re the white Latino Hispanic 'divides' even)?
I think people in Harbin's culture would be safer with a CA police on property, but keeping the camping cost down at the gate would be key to attracting younger folks who don't have much money, and are open to a pick up place with alternative thinking - and re the open naked hippy energy of Harbin's warm pool area which informs its countercultural energy coming out of the 1960s and '70s as it does ... And with the continuity of Ishvara Bob Hartley still being around re unfolding vision and even Harbin Pubs (as vile, violent, difficult and sick as he may be) . He'd balk a lot at no-corruption naked CA cops on property, but might come around re insurance questions, and given the devastating valley fire of 2015.
Shall we visit Harbin again in the 2022 spring, if we get the green light from Sajjad or Eric - to CHECK IN by checking out liminally of society modernity 'internetity' for a spell at that 'nudie place' - which is what UC BERKELEY Anthro Prof Aiwha Ong called Harbin to me years ago - that institutionalized the hippy party sociologically / anthropologically :)?

Apologies for including you in a large group email, but think you could make it work, and safely. Traveling to Harbin somewhat regularly for next Ethnographic project would change dramatically the self-quarantine isolation hangover aspect of coronavirus pandemic (after a kind of isolation - in the spring - in the somewhat sick culture of Canyon 94516), but wouldn't necessarily lead to new friends in the curious culture of California for me.

" 'bemail' from Interfolio which was part of my MIT Media Lab Faculty position application not long ago ... so, psychology-wise, consciousness-wise esp., am still seeking significant positive sociality, social gatherings, friends' groups, partner - with Work World & Univ Sch too - but isolation dissipates a bit ... So ...
Live in Boston 3 months a year near the Emerald Necklace or Arnold Arboretum for most Green areas and forests, while living daily in a great city (rather than Lexington or Concord)? Took a multivitamin capsule or pill with iron this morning and my eyes are not fuzzy (but it"s also morning, and I'm also outside looking at both my smartphone and into the distance) ... As an ovo lacto vegetarian, iron, & vitamin B 12 are potentially lacking in my diet ... And I think the other nutrients are helpful too. Seeking to take one with iron on Sundays and a different multivitamin daily otherwise again (seems not to be harmful too :) Experimenting on self (a Yogic India idea too) based on experience may be working ... difficult or possibly impossible to find the scientific literature about evidence for and against multivitamins in 2021 to parse the signal from the noise :) curious about aging reversal genetic drug therapies and capsules in these regards in the future too.

Researchers at Stanford University report that they can rejuvenate human cells by reprogramming them back to a youthful state. They hope that the technique will help in the treatment of diseases, such as osteoarthritis and muscle wasting, that are caused by the aging of tissue cells.
A major cause of aging is thought to be the errors that accumulate in the epigenome, the system of proteins that packages the DNA and controls access to its genes. The Stanford team, led by Tapash Jay Sarkar, Dr. Thomas A. Rando and Vittorio Sebastiano, say their method, designed to reverse these errors and walk back the cells to their youthful state, does indeed restore the cells’ vigor and eliminate signs of aging.
In their report, published on Tuesday in Nature Communications, they described their technique as “a significant step toward the goal of reversing cellular aging” and could produce therapies “for aging and aging-related diseases.”
Leonard P. Guarente, an expert on aging at M.I.T., said the method was “one of the most promising areas of aging research” but that it would take a long time to develop drugs based on RNA, the required chemical.
The Stanford approach utilizes powerful agents known as Yamanaka factors, which reprogram a cell’s epigenome to its time zero, or embryonic state.
Embryonic cells, derived from the fertilized egg, can develop into any of the specialized cell types of the body. Their fate, whether to become a skin or eye or liver cell, is determined by chemical groups, or marks, that are tagged on to their epigenome.
In each type of cell, these marks make accessible only the genes that the cell type needs, while locking down all other genes in the DNAs. The pattern of marks thus establishes each cell’s identity.
As the cell ages, it accumulates errors in the marking system, which degrade the cell’s efficiency at switching on and off the genes needed for its operations.
In 2006 Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, a stem-cell researcher at Kyoto University, amazed biologists by showing that a cell’s fate could be reversed with a set of four transcription factors — agents that activate genes — that he had identified. A cell dosed with the Yamanaka factors erases the marks on the epigenome, so the cell loses its identity and reverts to the embryonic state. Erroneous marks gathered during aging are also lost in the process, restoring the cell to its state of youth. Dr. Yamanaka shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in medicine for the work.

But the Yamanaka factors are no simple panacea. Applied to whole mice, the factors made cells lose their functions and primed them for rapid growth, usually cancerous; the mice all died.
In 2016, Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, found that the two effects of the Yamanaka factors — erasing cell identity and reversing aging — could be separated, with a lower dose securing just age reversal. But he achieved this by genetically engineering mice, a technique not usable in people.
In their paper on Tuesday, the Stanford team described a feasible way to deliver Yamanaka factors to cells taken from patients, by dosing cells kept in cultures with small amounts of the factors.
If dosed for a short enough time, the team reported, the cells retained their identity but returned to a youthful state, as judged by several measures of cell vigor.
Dr. Sebastian said the Yamanaka factors appeared to operate in two stages, as if they were raising the epigenome’s energy to one level, at which the marks of aging were lost, and then to a higher level at which cell identity was erased.
The Stanford team extracted aged cartilage cells from patients with osteoarthritis and found that after a low dosage of Yamanaka factors the cells no longer secreted the inflammatory factors that provoke the disease. The team also found that human muscle stem cells, which are impaired in a muscle-wasting disease, could be restored to youth. Members of the Stanford team have formed a company, Turn Biotechnologies, to develop therapies for osteoarthritis and other diseases.
The study is “definitively a step forward in the goal of reversing cellular aging,” Dr. Izpisua Belmonte said.
