Alasdair MacIntyre’s 1981 After Virtue, which paired an Aristotelian critique of liberalism with a sweeping diagnosis of the ills of modernity.
philosophical maverick Richard Rorty, who—in the intervals between deconstructing traditional metaphysics and epistemology and introducing English-language readers to Heidegger, Habermas, and Derrida—insisted that liberalism was far from unsalvageable and that, if anything, there should be a united front between leftists and liberals.
